Cool, we might just skip to that one then yes We've been on a movie spree with the kids lately. We're showing them a lot of movies we enjoyed when we were kids, and also some newer stuff that we didn't catch in theaters.

Army of One (2016) - 7/10

I don't know what you'd call this: A mockumentary? Jokeumentary? Biofoolery? It's not shot documentary style but it's based on the true story of Gary Faulkner yet at the same time it continually makes fun of the stupid bastard. Nic Cage was perfectly cast to play the role. I can't think of anyone else who would do this any justice. It's full-on Nic Cage unfiltered, and it's brilliantly acted by him. The movie itself is a little hit and miss but mostly hits. It's retarded, and fun most of the time. It has moments reminiscent to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang even though I wouldn't say it's near as good of a film, but it's still pretty amusing. Nic Cage carries the entire film.

The Shack- 4/10 - I'm not against any religion, but this was some hardcore indoctrination presented in an entertaining way. The Aussie guy wasn't very good at hiding his accent either. The aesthetics were really nice and Octavia and Radha were great as always though. Basically, it's "What Dreams May Come" but with a "God is the best ever!" Christian slant. What dreams May Come is a favorite of mine so that probably effected the score as well.

Wakefield 2/10 - 2 points for Cranston, but the definition of a hack director is the "non-ending." I've been fed up with open-ended films for over a decade now, it's lazy. If you don't want to show me your vision of the film get out of film-making and give others a chance to show me theirs. Also, the main character was too despicable to care about.

Seeking Justice (2011) - 4/10

I feel like this movie could have worked if not for Nic Cage being the star, and not jumping the shark in the 3rd act. I could name at least 5 other actors who would've fit the role and saved the movie's first 2 acts. He's just such a terrible actor for serious roles like this. The idea itself is decent enough but they leave some gaping plot holes unanswered in their attempt to be overly mysterious about everything. Like who the fudge is paying the organization who is setting all of this up? There is an awful lot of time and effort going into everything and there doesn't appear to be any benefit considering how much time and effort are going into this - for lack of a better word - "spy ring" that they're running with a small number of people. It's also too big of a conspiracy for what was necessary; it just goes fudging overboard for something that could have been a smaller thing. As I mentioned previously, it really starts to fall apart in the 3rd act, and ends dumber than necessary. There are better movies out there than this. Don't waste your time.

It was awfully short, even by netflix first-season standards, it was more like a cut-up movie then a netflix show.

Thankfully they are already greenlit for season 2, hopefully it's at least 8 episodes or more next time and can have longer running times.

It's weird, I love Jason Bateman mostly thanks to his role in Arrested Development. But I always thought he seemed like a more dramatic actor, or at least that he'd fit that mold a bit better. I'm very much looking forward to checking out Ozark soon enough. Can't wait to see how he does in a role like that - the trailer looks fudging awesome.

Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later is fudging gold so far. 2 episodes in and I already love it. Going to plow through it tomorrow before the lady and I have to babysit some kids. WE WILL SEE how well that goes considering she's hammered in bed at the moment.

The Devils Candy - 7.5/10

Imagine Mark (Ethan Embry) from Empire Records ate his brownie, got sucked into the GWAR video, got ripped, had a bad ass metal head daughter, became a gothic artist, and was still having bad trips 20 years later while having to fight the Devil and his earthly minion in a toned down thriller with a metal head backdrop. Anybody else like Prometheus but were just completely underwhelmed and disappointed with Covenant? It was like nothing really even happened in the film and every single scene was completely transparent. I wish Scott would have left the franchise after Alien. Every new installment of the franchise should have a new director. Alien: Covenant - a very sad 3/10

Could have been a really interesting Alien film with a smaller budget and a smaller cast.

I absolutely HATED Alien Covenant.

I thought Prometheus only redeeming quality was the ending and "where" the story for a sequel would lead, boy was I WRONG.

They basically figured out a way to NOT have to think of any "interesting" things to do and made a sequel by completely and utterly crapting on the ONLY good thing about Prometheus. David went "crazy" and killed Elizabeth, the only human who showed him kindness. Then he makes up his own alien "virus" and releases them on the Engineers? What a terrible way to pick up after Prometheus and just crap all over the Alien franchise as a whole.

The movie would have been far faaaaaar more interesting if they simply picked up with David (not going crazy) and Elizabeth arrived to the Engineer's homeworld and actually you know.....meeting them, talking to them, getting to know the engineers and then have something to do with the Aliens and please NOT make them a stupid bloody "virus" that you just breathe in...The Aliens should have been a natural species, not something genticaly engineered or anything, just some far distance species that evolved into the perfect killing machine on its own planet and then slowly started to spread to other worlds and adapted into what we knew it as

They should use Prometheus and Alien: Covenant in film schools to show you how when it comes to horror letting things remain a "mystery" is faaaaaaaar better then trying to explain EVERY single thing. Keeping the "space jockey" (aka engineers) mysterious was far better then turning them into Engineers (and I don't care what Prometheus tries to say, that space jocjkey in Alien was NOT A SPACE SUIT, it was a fossil with actual bone structure).

I really really wish they'd have just let Neill Blomkamp make his Alien movie instead of this crap, just give us Ripley/Hicks being picked up by a space station after Aliens ending and retconn everything after Aliens. I'd gladly sacrifice Alien 3/4 movies if it means getting rid of Prometheus/Alien Covenant.

I'll personally be waiting for the TV series as that will follow the books where the movie apparently just crams most of the book series into one movie. I haven't read the books but I've always been interested in the story, and judging from reviews, the movie won't help me there haha

Story of G.I. Joe (1945) - 8/10

Caught this one running on TV and I really liked this movie. It's surprisingly grim and realistic for a film that took place in the actual WW2 era. I'm more used to them being more up and at'em and all positive like the "get em boys" propaganda stuff in this era. This was very Saving Private Ryan. What caught my eye when I walked past the TV was that Burgess Meredish was in it so I stopped and sat down and watched and I'm glad I did. I also found out afterwards that it's a biopic about Ernie Pyle, which may explain why it's not so lighthearted like most of the other black and white war films...cuz it's based on real crap. Now I gotta go hunt down the blu, cuz this was a keeper.

I think the Dark Tower TV series doesn't encompass the entire book series but rather starts off in......I think the 3rd book, whichever one has Roland as a young kid, and goes from there. I have very little interest in the movie, it looks like they've changed way too much of the source material with the whole "alternate universe" thing.

How To Train Your Dragon - 9/10

Finally got around to watching this. Don't really have anything profound to say, just thought it was a great animated movie. It started off a bit weak for me, and a couple things near the end of the movie were kind of cheesy/cliche, but I really didn't have any complaints otherwise.

Interesting. My wife is a huge fan of the books and has read them all -- including the more recently inserted one -- and she has felt that Idris Elba was a perfect Roland from the trailers. And also that McConaughey makes a great Man In Black. She said that as soon as she saw the first trailer, she was really happy with the character choices.

And, doing a quick search online, it seems that most fans of the book feel the same way about the two main characters -- even if they might not enjoy the movie itself.

So, weird that your friend thinks that they were "off" just by the trailers when the vast majority of book readers seem to disagree. *shrug*

I mean I'm sure Idris does well in the role as far as they take it, but the writing of the character can destroy a good casting/performance unfortunately. I'll probably watch it when it hits the web.

I read every book and thought the casting of IE was horrible and the trailers didn't make me think any different. Seeing as how its not connected to the book though then I really don't care. While reading the books though I pretty much pictured Eastwood as Roland and.....i can't think of his name right now, but the weird crazy guy from Prison Break as The Man in Black. I suppose Christian Bale would have possibly fit as Roland as well, even though I dont care for him too much.

Hollow Man - 4/10

(WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD!)

When this movie first came out, for whatever reason, it seemed like a really big deal to me. Like, it was THE movie to see. I had wanted to see it ever since then but never got around to it. Finally watched it the other night, and was severely disappointed. First off, the writing was horrible. Most of the dialogue just came off so forced and cheesy, it made me cringe multiple times. The gratuitous language and nudity was annoying and completely unnecessary. The nudity added nothing to the plot and could have been left out completely, same for 90% of the language. The movie needed to be rated R for the violence, but I hate when they force in more crap just to make it more R, for no reason that actually benefits the movie. Finally, I just hated the overall direction the movie took. First, he's becomes some deranged sexual predator, preying on every woman he can find. Then he just becomes an all out sociopath trying to kill all of his friends. I was expecting more of a plot line where there's some bad guy or entity that's trying to steal his research/use it for bad and he's trying to stop/fight them while invisible. The way the movie actually played out was just stupid. The last third of the movie was basically a crappy horror film. It even had all of the classic cliches...splitting up when they shouldn't, refusing to do things that were common sense (wearing those googles as much as possible), the killer has superhuman strength/resilience and keeps coming back to life, with no real explanation. I was glad when this one was over. I did like the special effects a lot, they seemed to really hold up even 17 years later. That's the only reason I didn't rate this lower.

Saturday Night Fever - 3/10

This is one of the movies that I was too young for when it came out, and then never got around to seeing. It popped up on EPIX, so I figured I'd take a look.

I sort of wish I hadn't.

The music of the Bee Gees and other disco stars of the time is still there, and a highlight. The dancing still plays as well as it ever did. But the rest of it is just cringeworthy. The characters are basically butt-holes that I had a hard time caring about at all. I have to figure if they made this movie today, the racist and sexist dialogue would probably be toned WAY down. Basically, it ends up looking very dated, and a product of it's time, and not in a good way. Certainly other movies from the 70s still can hold up, but I don't think this is still one of them.

The Hitman's Bodyguard - 7/10

I got to see a promo early screening of this last night. It's pretty much what you think it's going to be. Reynolds is snarky. Jackson says "fudging" a lot. (Actually, they both do, but his is a lot louder and more emphatic.) A lot of crap gets blown up and people getting shot, stabbed, and beaten to hell. But it was enjoyable enough as a popcorn action/comedy movie.

Basic set up if you haven't heard about it:

Reynolds plays a professional bodyguard who has to escort Jackson from England to the International Criminal Court in The Hague to testify against an eastern European war criminal. Lots and lots of bad guys are standing in their way.

There's an outtake toward the end of the credits if you like staying for that kind of thing.

Stranger Things - 11/10

(WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD!)

I know it's silly to give it an 11 but I did it for Super 8 so I had to do it for this too smiley:::grin We ended up watching this one in 2 nights, back to back. Man, what a ride it was! I can't even fully put into words how much I love this show. I feel like every single aspect of it was just executed perfectly. The casting was incredible! Each actor gives a great performance, I'm really impressed by the child actors in particular. The characters portrayed in this show are all so interesting and likable in their own way, I relate to each of them and see myself in some way. For Joyce, the loving parent who will do whatever it takes to save their child. Dustin, the wise-cracking keeper of the peace with a speech impediment. Lucas, the voice of reason of the group. Will, the survivor. Nancy, the "good kid" trying new things. Jonathan, the loner/protective brother. I could go on and on. There was also some great character development. I thought I was going to hate Hopper at first. I figured he would just be this annoying jerk of a sheriff who got in the way, but he ended up being one of my favorite characters! The scenes where he was doing whatever it took to find Will were awesome, like when he cold-cocked the officer at the morgue guarding the fake body, or when he took out those 2 guys that caught him the first time he snuck into the lab. Awesome! I was really impressed by Winona Rider, she had some brilliant scenes. I also got a strong Frankie Heck vibe from her (The Middle), which was funny. Eleven was a super interesting character. They didn't overuse her abilities, so every time she did use them, it was great! My favorite was probably when she flipped the van. The part where she broke the bully's arm was really cool too though. Then there's the score....oh man, the score. Every time they had music playing in the background I had chills, it was always so awesome! So 80s! Loved the intro too, gotta mention that. Watching this show took me back to watching various 80s movies with my dad when I was a kid. The humor was great, it always seemed to be the perfect amount. The dialogue felt so authentic, never coming off forced or cheesy.

I could probably keep babbling for a while but I guess I should try to wrap this up. I loved Season 1 and can't wait for Season 2! My wife doesn't usually like anything scary and she loved it! We watched the trailer for Season 2 right after we finished, it's easily one of the best trailers I've ever seen! Thriller was perfect for the trailer!

I was left with some questions though, maybe y'all can help clear things up. First, why was the upside down just pitch black whenever Eleven visited it in the submersion chambers (or whatever they're called)? Was she not exactly in the Upside Down in those scenes, and if not, where was she then and why could she still see Barb and Will? Second, why did Hopper get in the car with those government guys after walking out of the hospital at the end? I thought he had agreed to "disappear" or something, but then he was back when they cut to a month later. Third, maybe I missed it, did they ever explain why somebody being in the same spot but in the Upside Down would light up the lights in that area? And how was Will able to turn on specific lights, or more importantly, how was he able to call his mom? I wouldn't have minded a little more explanation on how things like that worked, but I guess it adds to the mystique for a lot of it to just be unexplained. Finally, was that guy at the lab actually Eleven's father? Or did he just take her from that woman and pretend to be her father?

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets - 3/5

For a movie that looks so gosh darned pretty, you'd think they would've spent more time developing Valerian into a character that wasn't an absolute butt-hole for 85% of his screen time.

This movie was just TOO CROWDED. It has a 2 hour, 17 minute runtime and it feels like the story could've been expanded to two 90 minute movies. It would've made things much more coherent and easier to digest.

My original rating was 3.5/5 but I took out another half star because of a certain character who is given good screentime and an actual backstory and then just... you'll see. Pissed me off.

Very spoilery review thing here

Agreed. yes

Studio Ghibli, Mamoru Hosoda, and Makoto Shinkai are top three on my non-existent list right now.

Big Little Lies (HBO) a quick 7 episode season with episodes 1 hour each. All star cast (Reese Witherspoon, Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman) intriguing story lines. A bit predictable though I enjoyed it. It looks like it is left open for a second season, I hope it is picked up. Basically a nice who-dun-it killing centered around helicopter rich dog moms but relate-able to real life too. 7/10

I took this as her consciousness crossing over to the Upside Down, and just figured that since she wasn't physically there, she could only see bits and pieces.

We're not meant to understand the full details yet, just that he A) made a deal with the feds to save the group, B) part of that deal was to stay compliant with the cover-up, and C) he apparently also has to either take care of, or track down, Eleven.

That's what I got out of it at least. A and B are fairly straight forward, but C is suggested by that final Eggo scene. Hopper and Eleven didn't really have a substantial relationship, so the fact that he's leaving waffles out for her suggests that he's either feeding her (taking care of) or is attempting to lure her back (track her down). We see Eleven IMMEDIATELY after the Season 1 finale in the Season 2 trailer - I don't know if that means she's still in the Upside Down at the start of the season or if it's a flashback to show how she got out. We'll have to wait until Season 2 to find out.

I agree, a little more explanation would have been nice but like you mention I dig the open ended nature of it - makes for quality theorizing. In my opinion, it's just Will's energy crossing over, and affecting people/locations that he had interactions with when he was in the real world. We saw how when Wynona Rider walked in the Upside Down, it lit up the Christmas lights hanging in the real world. Will may have been able to "feel" his mother to the extent that he could interpret her questions, and was simply walking to/touching where the lights were to talk to her.

Though, we didn't see any lights where she was walking so how Will knew where to walk to/touch is still a mystery. Maybe the longer you spend in the Upside Down, the more aware of certain things you become.

I guess it's possible, but I think her name being Eleven makes it clear that this is the 11th kid (or person) Brenner had tried to get to cross over to the other dimension. Brenner's actor said he thought that if his last scene in Season 1 is that character's end, he'd be disappointed as a viewer. I imagine that means he'll be back in Season 2 somehow, so maybe some solid answers too.

The Dark Tower - 8/10
My wife and I went and saw this yesterday. I actually thought that it was a decent movie. They managed to make a kid that wasn't an annoying fool and/or emotional disaster (unlike way too many movies). I thought Roland did well and Matthew McConaughey as The Man In Black was perfect!

I say this as a person that has not read the books. My wife, who read them all and loves them, said that she also enjoyed the movie. yes

Annabelle Creation: 8/10

One of the better horror movies I've seen in years, which was surprising since the first I didn't care much for.

My wife was scared quite a bit too. It has a decent mix of creepiness and jump scares with still enough back story and not completely atrocious actjng to make it worth it if you don't care for cheap scares. It also took a real stab at connecting The Conjuring and Annabelle series together in a meaningful way.

There are also two post-credit scenes. Neither give you any real information though.

Shot Caller (2017) - 7.5/10

I snagged this one because of the cover "rip-off" controversy and watched the trailer...and it's actually a really solid film. It's surprisingly good. It's very much a hard drama about how prison life can turn someone into something they're not in order to survive. It's got a little side story happening as well that keeps it interesting, although I think the payoff to the side story was a bit wonky. Not movie ruining or anything but I wish it did without it and focused more on the prisoners and humanizing them. They mostly did that with the main guy, but not really with anyone else, so it was hard to see the other "bad guys" as anything except bad guys. I also wish it had kind of went down a little differently with their little mini-twist ending and led to more of what I was hoping was going to happen considering the events that led up to it. Ultimately though, it's still a pretty good movie. Watch the trailer and maybe give it a shot. I'll be hanging on to the blu I got from Canada. I could see myself watching this again a few years down the road maybe.

Sing (2016) - 4/5

It was okay. Entertaining, good humor, great voice acting, amazing choice of music (for the most part) but I can't get over the fact that Matthew McConaughey was basically doing a good Jon Lovitz impersonation for the entire film.

The Devil's Candy - 4/10

At first, I thought maybe this would be a slow burn horror, but it ended up just being like a boring Amityville Horror. By the time it got to the point, there were only like 20 minutes left at which point it almost seemed like it was going to redeem itself because the end bits got pretty terrifying...and then it went full retard and just went right back down to where it started. It's a shame they ruined the end with some dumb crap. It really could have been a meaningful and dreadful cap to the whole drudge of an experience, but they decided to go the dumb route and put it right back ate sub-par.

I felt like they really missed some chances to be clever in this one. For instance: you'd expect maybe a seal would sing "kiss from a rose" instead of a sheep etc. Daughter loves it though.

Pretty much, yeah. I also found it weird that, just like Zootopia, there were no bird people. But there are water creatures? The whale, the squids... why does this make no sense

Dig Two Graves - 6/10

I feel like maybe I'd like this more on second viewing now that I know where it was going. The first viewing I just had was a little taxing because the film tries to be overly mysterious about everything, which it eventually gets around to coming full circle by the end, but it feels like it takes a while to get there the first time around. I want to say I'll probably bump it up to a 7/10 on a re-watch. I'm a bit too dumb to catch all of the subtleties is was throwing, but I feel like this is sort of like a Sixth Sense type of film where you see more crap the second time around. It definitely was not what I was expecting it to be though. For now, I'm sticking with my score. It's worth a watch.

Security (2017) - 4/10

Meh. The first 1/3 felt like it was going to be Die Hard in a mall, but it quickly turned into something more akin to Home Alone in a mall with a group of teenagers led by a grizzled Antonio Banderas setting up traps to keep the bad guys at bay. It's still a little like Die Hard but it feels far more teen oriented. It's somewhere in the tween/early teen territory kind of film... it's on the 13 end of the PG-13 scale. Banderas and Ben Kingsley are both better than this level of film. the acting quality for just about everyone else was on the "first movie" scale, while Kingsley and Antonio were acting like they were in a much better film. It's alright though, I guess. I could see younger teens probably liking this more than adults.

Apparently that wasn't even legit. The studio said it was fan made and wasn't distributed as a poster in any country.

Fudging fans.

Cinderella (2015) - 9/10

We watched the original Cinderella a few weeks back with the kids. It held up better than I expected, although it was a pretty basic movie overall (not much really happens). With that said, I think the remake did a really good job of taking that story and making a live-action version that was actually enjoyable. Doing less with the animals was a good choice, even if that was my favorite aspect of the animated film. The actress playing Cindrella was definitely the highlight of the movie. Her acting and just the overall portrayal of the character were extremely likeable. My only real complaint was that the prince still tried the shoe on her at the end, to verify she was the same girl. This was bad enough in the animated movie, but just felt really stupid in a live-action movie. I know they had to keep it in there because it's such an iconic aspect of the Cindrella story, but it was still stupid.

So is anyone else still watching Twin Peaks?

I have to say, this season got off to a rocky start for me, especially how unlike twin-peaks it felt with the first few episodes(IE the Michael Cera cameo, which thankfully was literally one scene).

However around ep 7-8 things started to click. The weirdness (especially episode 8) is cranked up to 11, the characters are starting to make sense of things and story threads/characters are coming together from both the old show and this new one. It's great how they are weaving in old things, even bringing in characters that, sadly, aren't with us anymore and still making them a part of the new show. I'm really enjoying it now, a lot more then earlier in the season.

Also have to say, I'm really digging the new Bobby and where he's ended up

I hope that they get to do more of the show after this season.

I like the new TP, but I also liked FWWM more than the original show. Lots of people who didn't like FWWM seemed shocked that the new seasons is not much like the original. As far as continuing Showtime president said the option is there but it was meant as a one season thing.

I hope it continues, mainly because:

It seems we aren't going to get the normal Cooper back til the end of the season or such, as that's where the story is heading it seems.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice - 4/10

(mild spoilers if you know nothing about the plot/characters of this movie)

Man, what an awful movie. I'm pretty easy-going when it comes to movies, especially superhero/action movies, but I hated this. I went in with a very open mind, expecting to at least somewhat enjoy it, despite all the bad reviews it got. The first 2/3 of the movie were just so boring. So many scenes were drawn out twice as long as they needed to be. The transitions from one scene to the next were always abrupt, like there was no cohesion in the direction of the movie. The entire plot just felt so forced, mainly how they quickly tried to cram in Batman and Superman hating each other and wanting to fight. I thought I would like Eisenberg's goofy portrayal of Luther. It was interesting in the trailer, but it mostly fell flat in the movie. Affleck's Batman was ok I guess. Wasn't crazy about it but didn't hate it either. I still like Bale more though. I didn't like this version of Alfred at all. Michael Caine was just so good, while Jeremy Irons was completely unmemorable. The only thing that sort of salvaged the movie was the action/fighting at the end. Although, I really didn't even care much for the fight between Batman and Superman, it was just ok. Doomsday was pretty cool, although ridiculously OP. I definitely liked seeing Wonder Woman in the film. I'm glad I saw her movie before this one, I don't know if I would have cared as much had I seen this first. The best part was when Batman went to save Martha, those fight sequences were amazing! I didn't like how at the end...

Superman died. It seemed silly, why couldn't WW or Batman drive the spear into Doomsday? I just wasn't a fan of them killing him off, which is weird because I really don't like the character that much and find him to be pretty uninteresting. It just felt wrong, somehow. Are they planning to bring him back for Justice League? Did everybody familiar with the comics know this was coming, or was it a surprise?
