Taken 8.5/10
good overall movie, more realistic action for an actor his age.

In The Valley of Elah - 8/10 - Powerful. The director manages to tell the story without compromising and giving into typical Hollywood endings. Great movie and great acting. |

Did you notice when TLJ's character walks into a bar early in the movie and says "I'm looking for my son" that he says it in rhythm with the song playing in the background?? GREAT SCENE. |

Star Trek (8/10) -- Never saw the show or another movie before, this was a pretty good one. Visually outstanding, character depth was good, if there was any negative it'd be the bad guy(s) were paper thin, cliched, and stereotypical sci fi fodder. Overall, I enjoyed my first Trek experience.
The Wrestler (9/10) -- Powerful filmmaking at its finest, Aranofsky is a legendary filmmaker. Must watch in your lifetime!
Southland Tales (8/10) -- Great movie, quirky and fun, abstract yet thought-provoking. The crazy cast keeps you entertained while trying to decipher the cryptic, symbolic future Richard Kelley presents in a post-911 society on the brink of collapse. Upon second viewing, the movie may make more sense as its acid-trip-storytelling can leave some people in the dark on their first viewing.

Frost/Nixon - 8/10
Frank Langella was a great casting choice for Nixon, the cold & withdrawn demeanor came across well. I was thoroughly entertained and got a history lesson at the same time. For as much of a bad president he is remembered for, he sure is an interesting fellow.
I have The Wrestler waiting for me for viewing sometime over the weekend I think I may go see Star Trek tonight, not sure on that though. Definitely going to see Angels & Demons next weekend. |

He was a very interesting and intelligent man, just a bit paranoid (and maybe a bigot, as well). Anyway, while a lot of the history of the film is accurate, some liberties have been taken, as well as some stuff just added that simply didn't happen (the "drunk" phone call from Nixon, for example). Still, an extremely powerful film, and it was my pick for the Oscar over Slumdog Millionaire. Not that I didn't love SM, but I thought it was a bit overhyped.

Yeah, as far as 'history lesson' I meant what came from the interview segments. |
savior
| | #291 posted May 15, 2009 at 5:58pm (EST) |
For sure. The actual interviews (which I believe are available on DVD) aren't very interesting at all. Ron Howard and (especially) Peter Morgan did a fantastic job of finding out the truly interesting side of the interviews, which was how they ever came to be.

The Wrestler -
Rourke was amazing, Tomei was awesome (omghawt STILL), everything was top notch, except the ending... it was... I dunno unsatisfying I guess, but I get it and it fits. I just think there could have been a little something more. |

I'm actually kinda interested in seeing this. I never really cared much about Nixon and the whole Watergate thing, but that's because I was ignorant about it all. Last year, in my final business class, I had to do a massive report on a president and ended up getting assigned Nixon. After my report, which ended up being about 65 pages, I was actually really interested in Nixon. And I've never really cared about any presidential history. He was actually a very interesting man, if not a bit cocky. So I'm going to have to watch this sometime, but I can't seem to find anyone else interested in seeing in. |

I watched Frost/Nixon the other night, but fell asleep halfway through. So far so good, they do have a real documentary out with the real interviews and stuff, I'ma watch that after watching the Ron Howard film.

Do me a favor and try to keep track of how many times you fall asleep while watching the original interviews.

Paul Blart Mall Cop - 7/10 - Pretty good family movie, a little unrealistic, but hey what isn't? Very Home Alone-ish with an older guy, and more humor. Not nearly as clever as Home Alone, but it was pretty well done aside from all the predictability
Fanboys - 8/10 - I've waited like 3 years to see this movie from whenever I first watched Clerks. For all the wait, it wasn't everything it should have been but it was still fantastic. Seeing Seth Rogen without all his weight totally made it worth it.

I really liked primer a lot, but everyone else I know who saw it thought it sucked, said they couldn't follow it and didn't understand much of the movie.

Terminator Salvation - I found this movie to be excellent from beginning to end, a solid story, great cast, and amazing visuals. It connected with the originals very well, and was a great movie experience. McG the director, made an appearance at the theater to give a little introduction, he said that this was the first ever viewing of the film which was pretty cool to be a part of.
I would highly recommend this movie to everyone, great action flick, and a great movie for my fellow Terminator fans. |

Primer is wicked sweet . Plus it's hella short at like 73 mins or something so at a minimum it's worth your rental. It reminded me of Pi quite a bit since it was so low-budget, had real science behind what people were talking about, and repeated viewings made you appreciate it more. The commentary on Primer is interesting too...they mention how their "outtakes" were like 2 mins...they use pretty much every single thing they shot and just tried to overdub the mistakes...like the director/actor saying "cut" under his breath in one scene lol. |

Dude, every sci-fi has a little cult following to them. Donnie Darko's no exception. S. Darko was the crap, tho. I had a couple people confirm that my trip wasn't innaccurate woo hoo!! Seriously, tho, that movie was the crap especially through the eyes of a sugar glider!!! Highly recommended!!

Terminator Salvation- 8.5/10
The story was good, the acting was great. Anton Yelchin, who plays kyle reese was excellent and going to be really big. Loved him in charlie bartlett and never thought he could pull this off. Sam Worthington, like heath ledger in dark knight, totally stole the show from Bale. Special effects were amazing, as was the colors they used to show how bleak the future is. Gone was the cheese from the third movie. There were just a few parts I didn't like. Definitely a worthy part of the series |

I think he was implying that you can't really consider Will Smith a rapper. Could be mistaken. lol. Same goes for Mark Wahlberg. Some things should be left alone. |
