General Questions
Q: What is Steam?
A: Steam is Valve's digital distribution software that acts as an online PC game retailer and game organizer that also includes many community features such as friends, messaging, groups, stats, etc.
Q: How do I get Steam?
A: Visit Steam's website here!
Q: I have Steam now, what should I play?
A: Steam offers games from just about every PC game publisher. You can also download plenty of quality free titles. Nvidia and ATI users get some good games.
Trackmania Nations Forever and Sam and Max Season 1 Episode 4 are also free to all users.
You can register and link many games you already own with your game's CD-Key! Click here for a complete list of games supported.
GameTZ favorites include The Orange Box, Counter-Strike Source, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty 4, and Audiosurf.
GameTZ Steam Community Group
Started in September 2007, the GameTZ Steam Group has been open to all members of the site!
When you join, you will be connected to all the other Steam users here on GameTZ. Chat, compare stats, and play games!
For membership, send me a message through GameTZ. click the "Join This Group" link found on the top right of your page. (Group has now been made Public!)
Click here to see the group and its members!
To join the group, please make sure you have a Steam ID.
To do so, head over here and enter your Steam login and password.
Don't forget to put an avatar on your profile!

xFire
The final "essential" program that PC gamers often use is xFire.
Like Steam, it provides many features such as friends, messaging, game tracking, etc.
It's great for games that are not supported on Steam or to those who only purchase boxed PC games
Many of the GameTZ users who use Steam also use xFire
Download it here.

I'm hosting a Call of Duty 4 server off my connection, since I don't want to get any hosting. It's basically lag-free. We just went in and had an hour-long 4 man brawl and the pings were almost always below 150 (guncrazy's like 3,000 miles away from Florida, so he had a kind of high ping). I plan to try to keep it running for at least 16 hours a day, and may edit/work on it every now and then. I can also host game servers for Crysis, UT3, and TF2, but I can't host more than 2 at once, player limit of 12 on each if there's 2 servers, or 20 if there's 1.

Yeah, my 2Mbps upload speed is kind of small right now, but enough for a server. Once I get FiOS with 20Mbps download/20Mbps upload vs the 20/2 now, I can host 2 or 3 servers, I'm hoping.

Sweet, I didn't know about the Vent server. I've been running a small one just for my Saturday Night gaming peeps, but I think I'll switch over to this one for Saturday nights, keep everyone in one place. Give me a holla if you need some assist with the vent monies, I'd be happy to chip in.

The 10 slot is good till 12/2009
If we were to expand to 15 or 20 slots, it'd cost $15-30 (Money covers extra slots until 12/2009)
One of these days we may want to expand, but right now it looks like we are ok

I doubt our Saturday nights will add more than 4 or so, at the moment. It's usually just Gren and I on Vent, but Ramsey may be joining us soon since we'll be starting earlier.
