General Questions
Q: What is Steam?
A: Steam is Valve's digital distribution software that acts as an online PC game retailer and game organizer that also includes many community features such as friends, messaging, groups, stats, etc.
Q: How do I get Steam?
A: Visit Steam's website here!
Q: I have Steam now, what should I play?
A: Steam offers games from just about every PC game publisher. You can also download plenty of quality free titles. Nvidia and ATI users get some good games.
Trackmania Nations Forever and Sam and Max Season 1 Episode 4 are also free to all users.
You can register and link many games you already own with your game's CD-Key! Click here for a complete list of games supported.
GameTZ favorites include The Orange Box, Counter-Strike Source, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty 4, and Audiosurf.
GameTZ Steam Community Group
Started in September 2007, the GameTZ Steam Group has been open to all members of the site!
When you join, you will be connected to all the other Steam users here on GameTZ. Chat, compare stats, and play games!
For membership, send me a message through GameTZ. click the "Join This Group" link found on the top right of your page. (Group has now been made Public!)

xFire
The final "essential" program that PC gamers often use is xFire.
Like Steam, it provides many features such as friends, messaging, game tracking, etc.
It's great for games that are not supported on Steam or to those who only purchase boxed PC games
Many of the GameTZ users who use Steam also use xFire

Yeah.....too bad Steam's asinine policies won't let me register my copy of UT3. The key code is registered already. Steam won't transfer the code away without scans of the keycode (which I have) and the receipt (which I don't).
Now, I got this from Goozex. But even if I hadn't, who the hell keeps their receipts? For all they know, I bought it months ago, and my keycode got used/created by a key generator program, and I've just gotten screwed. Actually, for all I know, that did happen, since the Goozex trader told me he hadn't used it. The game has been out for months, and only just recently became registerable on Steam. Seems like they ought to cut people some slack.

When something is not registerable on Steam, does that mean that you cannot play it online at all, or just can't play it through Steam?
If it's not playable on Steam, is it playable on the other site recomended: Xfire?
Any games you can't get rid of here?

Contact Goozex's mods and report that trader. He gave you a game you can't use anymore, so you should get your trade credits back. Try to find his Steam username, if he has the game installed, then he screwed you over with a bum copy of the game.
You can still install the game on your own, outside of Steam, and play it, but you -may- get "Duplicate CD key" errors if you end up playing against that dumbass. You don't have to use the Steam version to play against other Steam, but you won't have achievements and stuff. Game servers are independent from Steam.
For anyone who wants the game, it's $12 this weekend. |

Is anyone having problems updating Unreal Tournament III?
I haven't been able to download -anything- at all. My download starts up, then it just stops for no reason. It doesn't make any sense, I downloaded today's TF2 update and the last bits of Lost Planet so there shouldn't be any problems... |

Depends on the game, does that alot with random demos I download. Too much traffic probably.
O and has anybody tried the Watchmen demo? I'm d/ling it now.

Well, I would, but apparently Goozex does not require that add-on DRM stuff be traded, even with full packages. They assume that the original owner would have redeemed things like extra content. I'm not sure if this would really count, but technically, the game is playable. It's just not registerable on Steam.

Yeah, I know. I'm not too worried about the cd-key issue.

Yeah, I've been downloading UT3 for over 12 hours and it's still not done! It's finally at 99% but keeps stopping. Hopefully I'll get to play before the free weekend is up! 
I was very upset my Best Buy didn't have any more Orange Box, but I was able to get C&C: Red Alert 3 Premium Edition for $10.
Any games you can't get rid of here?

Sucks, because I'm currently content with Quake Live as my main online shooter. It's too convenient and just as great as I remember.

KEEP COMPLAINING! The guy traded a game that can't be registered anymore, they should reverse the trade and give him a negative. I WARNED them about this a few months ago when Blizzard started accepting Warcraft and Starcraft CD keys on your Blizzard account, but they ignored me.

Anyone know if the free weekend is for offline only? I finally got it working, but couldn't Login for online play.
I tried an offline match and it died part way thru a round. I think my laptop should be able to handle this game? I'm just slightly under the recommended (but above the minimum)

Never mind previous post . . . I was able to get online and play a full match. I'm still having a lot of trouble with the whole keyboard/mouse playing . . .

Keyboard/mouse takes a while to learn. I cut my teeth on Quake back in the day. It's well worth the time invested, though.

Follow Up: Well, I did complain, and Goozex refunded my points and trade credit. So now I have a copy of UT3 for free....assuming I don't want to play on Steam. I also see that UT3 is now marked "not tradeable" on Goozex.

Eh, at least you got your trade credits back.
But I uh... I suggest trying the key online again. I checked out Valve's forums and it looks like there was a glitch with the Free Weekend. Some keys were not being accepted.

I only got to play for a few mins on sunday. took it about 1 1/2 days to download. I may purchase it before the sale is up. I have so many shooters I still like playing though. Cod4, tf2, l4d,css, and now quake live. |
