General Questions
Q: What is Steam?
A: Steam is Valve's digital distribution software that acts as an online PC game retailer and game organizer that also includes many community features such as friends, messaging, groups, stats, etc.
Q: How do I get Steam?
A: Visit Steam's website here!
Q: I have Steam now, what should I play?
A: Steam offers games from just about every PC game publisher. You can also download plenty of quality free titles. Nvidia and ATI users get some good games.
Trackmania Nations Forever and Sam and Max Season 1 Episode 4 are also free to all users.
You can register and link many games you already own with your game's CD-Key! Click here for a complete list of games supported.
GameTZ favorites include The Orange Box, Counter-Strike Source, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty 4, and Audiosurf.
GameTZ Steam Community Group
Started in September 2007, the GameTZ Steam Group has been open to all members of the site!
When you join, you will be connected to all the other Steam users here on GameTZ. Chat, compare stats, and play games!
For membership, send me a message through GameTZ. click the "Join This Group" link found on the top right of your page. (Group has now been made Public!)
Click here to see the group and its members!

The final "essential" program that PC gamers often use is xFire.
Like Steam, it provides many features such as friends, messaging, game tracking, etc.
It's great for games that are not supported on Steam or to those who only purchase boxed PC games
Many of the GameTZ users who use Steam also use xFire

Aye, it's an MMO, pay-to-play. Recent server merges have the populations up and it appears to be doing well enough after its first year. It's actually quite good, Conan just shipped without enough high end content to keep people playing, and it was missing features the devs promised but did not deliver on (worse than most MMOs--it's common enough at launch). Much better game now, very true to Howard's world, and has a singleplayer feel to it, what with dialogue options and such.
I've yet to hear about it being in danger of shutting down. Kit has Talk-Out-Of-Ass Syndrome. Careful, it's catching. That loudmouth 1% of forum populations seems to fuel the doom and gloom. It's definitely far from thriving with millions of subscribers like WoW, but it seems to be finding its niche after recent improvements in terms of content, and the server merges have the servers feeling less like ghost towns.
Anyway, it's worth 10 bucks to check it out if you dig Conan and MMOs, free month of play. I ordered one and would be glad to give out a buddy pass to anyone who wants one when it arrives. I think the CE ships with 5 of them.

Yeah I remember some of my friends trying to convince me that it was worth playing
Seemed like it would be more fun than WoW, but I still didn't play since I don't play many subscription based MMOs

MMOs definitely aren't for everyone; hell, they're hardly for me nowadays, I play them in very short bursts  .

I used to play Guild Wars a lot but got bored with it because of the level capping at 20 (and you advanced so freaking fast.) If you played all day you would have a maxed out character.
I hear now it's capped at 30 but I'm still "bleh" about it because the leveling up is too fast for me.
But I'd like to give it a try...
As far as steam, I ordered a new wireless controller from amazon because my wired one got fudgeed up. While playing TF2 all I would do was twirl around, couldn't do anything else. Figured out it wasn't my settings, it was happening on every game I played even without Steam.
But I have been trying to learn to use the keyboard, still so alien to me. I am mostly only worth a damn with a sniper with the keyboard, but I still get killed easily by a scout hopping over and shooting me.

My bad. I just can't stand it when someone who has probably never played a game offers advice like "And that game's in danger of being shut down because nobody plays it. Don't waste your money" based on news blurbs and forum posts. It's biased, unfounded, second-hand personal opinion.
It's a pet peeve, sorry for being insulting.

I hate MMORPGs because they can die at any time. Well, unless it's WOW, that crap's eternal and powered by the blood of Blizzard fanboys. And when they go down, the developers rarely release the server info so lots of people are just left out in the cold with no way of playing the game anymore.

I also doubt Guild Wars will go down specifically because it's free. I might have renewed interest in it when GW2 is released.
I used to love playing StarMudd back in the day, it was text based. I think it's still up and running but no one really plays on it anymore, just idles. It's beautifully done though.
I hate MMO's that have cartoon-y graphics like WoW that's why I couldn't get into it.

I haven't touched L4D in a while, but I got my new controller yesterday (sort of getting used to using keyboard in some games though with the wait!)
Anyone want to play something this weekend? I'm down for L4D or Team Fortress 2.

My PC's been acting wonky lately. It's not L4D's fault, but the game is much more demanding than TF2. |

hmm
I would check your fans for clogs/dirt/dust. Are they making different noises then usual? Also check their speeds in the bios to see if they're running. Sometimes they hum if they're clogged up or broken and they aren't spinning at all.
If it's not a fan issue then it would be hardware.
That totally sucks
But maybe you can play from TF2 this weekend

I don't remember, sinnie. I bought my copy of Orange Box two years ago for $25 (yay turkey day).
That's an insane amount of game for $10 though.

If I didn't already have TF2 I would buy it to get Portal. I have the Orange Box on PS3 though if I ever want to replay it.

Left 4 Dead has a free trial this weekend and is 40% off also until Monday. I don't think this is the normal weekend deal, but again it seems like they're repeating deals 
I bought L4D a few months ago when it was 50% off.
