I've removed the nazi images from the image server.
If BS like this continues, I'll consider harsher penalties (longer restrictions up to and including permanent suspension).

The other side of this, is that it's sad that after sixteen years our good friend Knight here doesn't know any better. Because of kids like him I completely understand why the older generations hate our generation. Kid I hope you learn to have some respect, and I pray that your parents learn how to discipline.,

Knight doesn't seem that to me. I'm hoping we can put this behind us. He's done very well with his trades. It would be a shame to lose him over something stupid like this. |

I think the decision regarding knight (truly a piece of work IMHO) is arbitrary and capricious given other users have been much more vile, particularly with words. Given the action taken, I assume that there is not a limit on free speech here at gametz and that the boundaries are defined by the complaining "so called" crowd rather than you, bill?
How about making a list of "objectionable" symbols and images. I mean, there will be other users who come here and post other racist, excrement, non-religious or religious symbols, etc. and we want to give them a heads up as to what is appropriate and not, no? That way, the have an idea how they can not only keep out of trouble, but off the list of the site's "book burning" preachers (who sometimes, themselves, take liberty with their own sense of "appropriateness").

Sheesh, you know better. Bill has been very open and consistent in NOT wanting to make lists of that sort.
Also, it seems like you should know the difference between the usual trash talking that happens here and hate speech. Racist crap of any flavor has been pretty universally condemned. I'd almost admit that it's the only thing that will get you a quick restriction. (Piracy gets you a quick suspension.)

I tend to agree that there's a Roman Coliseum thing going on here. People love the drama. It's human nature. It's part of why the old complaint voting system got out of hand. People like to "draw blood", especially on-line. So, there was a tendency to approve most complaints, just for kicks.
My actions are heavily influenced by public perception. If a lot of people complain about something, I'm more likely to do something about it. That's what seemed to happen here. Though, I tried to take a more moderate approach by just giving a restriction. I agree that there are times when it seems like other people (especially regular users) get away with far worse. As I've explained in the past, there's a popularity aspect to it. It's more than that, though. Like Gren said, "trash talking" is different. Also, most of it is joking around between people who hang out in the forums. Trying to draw a line is really complicated given all that's going on. I think the majority of the community here would prefer I stay out of it.
Part of the issue here is that Knight had posted a KKK symbol last week. We just talked about it (in another Site_Feedback topic), he took it down and I thought things were cool. But, then the Nazi stuff happened, so it seemed more like a repeating problem and something that wasn't going to just go away. Even so, I'm still hoping Knight will just move on an quit trying to get people to freak out over his bio pic or whatever.
Trying to make a list of what's offensive would suck and no one would read it and there would always be stuff we missed. Plus, depending on the context, it may not make sense. I think things like that never work. I'm kind of assuming you suggested that to make a point, so whatever.
I think we can all try to roll with the punches a little and get along for mutual benefit. The lynch mob mentality is something we need to keep an eye on. I'm trying to be "enlightened" in my approach to problems like this. I'm trying not to make a big deal out of them, if possible. But, if I get pushed enough, I will take action. I don't think I have much choice. |

I use this in my bio and if I used this as my avatar, would I get a restriction?
I mean, to some (including the government), Earth First! represents a form of "domestic terrorism".
Further, I provide a link to this: Ecodefense: A field guide to monkeywrenching. This book/text is a "how to manual" to putting a wrench in the industrial/capitalist machine. Will this link be removed if I put it in my sig?
This then begs the question of objectionable symbols and links in bios as well and how they will be policed.
Next, can I use some of Maplethorpe or Serrano's work, like Piss Christ as a avatar?
In short, my list comment was rhetorical. The best option, IMHO, is allow the free speech and screw the constantly complaining mob.
You've restricted me once for posting REAL pictures of torture during a thread about torture. THAT was mob mentality bullcrap IMO given they were used as a relevant part of that discussion and had nothing to do with racism (instead, made the US look bad - fudging nationalism).
To add, IMO you give the lynch mob too much control and authority. The mob is usually composed of the same people.
