So I got Dark Souls from Christmas. I have purposely been staying in the dark (no pun intended) about this game. I am dying to play the game online, but I heard that a lot was changed with the latest patch. Could someone outline the changes for me while keeping it as spoiler free as possible? Should I run through the game once offline before I take it online?

Thanks for the help.

I'm level 71 and invading seems to have worked in most places. I tried from the Anor Londo, Blight swamp, New Londo, Undead Parish (by sunlight altar), Sen's Fortress... I got multiples in each place.

Payouts for winning can be rather low. I just got 2672 souls for killing a guy at the top of Sen's. I was definitely making more souls by helping kill bosses (made 60k once at Sen's - I think it helps if you get the killing blow).

Pres_Ford - have you upgraded the bonfire to 20 estus? You said you killed Pinwheel, right? His Rite of Kindling allows you to kindle up to 20. Also, getting all the fire-keeper souls you can to upgrade estus, helps. I had +4 when I beat 4 kings earlier today. I think mostly, you just need to do a lot of damage fast, though. Then, you wont need to heal as much. That's my overall impression.

I just beat sif at level 45 and using my pyro it was supper easy ( I think I will level up some more though because my dex needs to be 20 to use painted guardian sword) I summoned help but the guy pretty much just watched me kill him..... I used great combustion to do around 450 dmg then combustion for 280 or something (I just stayed under him and faced his leg before attacking) I did hurl a couple great fireballs at the end for 500+ dmg.... I only took dmg from sif one time and it was when I was to aggressive and tried to attack twice between his attack.

I will probably lvl to 60 put my dex at 20 and try to get another slot * smile * I think I will start carrying 10 heal spells when I plan to get summoned and max out my fireballs (24) and orbs (12) also if I wear the slot ring I can use great combustion too * yes * also I am planning to go chaos with that painted guardian sword.

I haven't tried using the rite of kindling yet. Is it one more estus flask for each humanity used?

5 extra flasks and is should have no problem. I've pretty much just been letting them hit me and not even trying to block. 2 handed occult zweihander deals a ton of damage to them but blocking and dodging kills stamina I can't afford to lose. An extra few flasks and I should have plenty since I've been knocking off at least the first 2 kings every time with no trouble.

no its 5 per humanity and only applicable to that bonfire

so if it was 5 before you need to be in human form then kindle 3 times (if you are undead you will need 4 humanity total to go to 20 and you will be in human form)

Im having a lot more trouble with this one. Its much stronger and the one at the undead burg had a lot of nooks to hide in when it charged. This one gored me and im dead before i can take a swing, even with shield up.

is your shield maxed out? it needs to have good stability then just use a lightning spear with +4 or 5 so you can leave shield up. ( I think my friend used eagle shield +14 or 15 and I used +5 silver knight shield) I am pretty sure we were both between 55 and 70 when we went through there. Archives is pretty rough on a plus note the boars do not re spawn. They were harder for me (when I was mage) then him (melee with spear/ high dex/endurance) but you should be able to get them. Just try to spin to side before you attack generally his initial rush / side to side attack is the worst, lock on to him and let him come to you as you back up some so you dont take the brunt of it then drop shield (regenerate some stamina if need be) and spin to side/attack.

EDIT: just saw you use a 2 handed weapon if that's the case here that is the problem, if I remember right they only block 60% of damage at most?

It's been a while since I fought the boar(s) (aren't there 2?) at Duke's Archive... I think the trick is dodging then hitting them in the back. I've heard it's possible to backstab them even. But, they charge, hit a wall, then get a little stuck, so you hit-hit-hit. Then if not yet dead, dodge until they charge and get stuck a little again. repeat.

I'm pretty sure my sorcerer had no problem with them. I'd put up soulmass then just dodge and the spell killed the boar.

I've been having some fun with invading. Some weird combinations have come up I wasn't expecting. I had one guy I invaded a few times, the 3rd time he actually put down a gravelord symbol and I beat him and got a eye.

In Anor Londo you can often get multiples fighting multiples (reds vs. blues or reds on reds, I think too). This really helps because I mostly suck. I had a good run where I got a bunch of humanity and 100k souls by the end mostly because the guy helping me was kick ass. Then, last night I had another hiding invader. But, I managed to summon 2 more guys and eventually the invader disconnected after running away a lot (annoying, but kind of funny too). So, me and these 2 other guys were just waiting for someone else to invade (lots of rolling around and gestures, * yawn * ). Finally, some guy (blue, so darkmoon) comes in and we're look "Hell Ya... finally lets kill him." And, the great thing is he doesn't run away at all. He does some miracle first, then comes right at all 3 of us. So, we all take swings and *POP* energy blast and all 3 of us are insta-killed. Brilliant! Karmic Justice, FTW (literally). I wanted to shake that guy's hand, he was a real pro. 3-on-1, no problem.

I also went and got the wood ring.. the ninja one that does the ninja flip thing and equipment load doubling. I noticed almost all invaders use that and guides say it's over-powered, so I figured I must have it.

I was thinking last night that I should do a new character that only levels up resistance. It seems like no one ever puts any points in resistance, but maybe it's awesome if you do that and only that. * smile *

What Bill said. I never fought the Boar really. I just ran away when he charged at me and then cheap shot him in the back when he turned around. Easiest mini boss in the game.

I played both Soul games offline before including online primarily so I didn't have to worry about invaders when I'm at a critical point like a boss, or being interrupted by someone who modded their char to a max level with unbeatable strength. If you play online the first time you play the Souls series it may just add more unnecessary frustration with invaders, but it can also be helpful if you have a friend who can be summoned into your game to help.
Personally, I like the feeling of being alone in a difficult world presented in this series to see if I can beat the game on my own without help, of course that's jmho.
Playing online adds a whole new dynamic that I think is something to experience after you have a chance to get used to the game that is Dark/Demon's Souls. :)
Hope this helped.

Just started playing Dark Souls again on the 360 (played on the PS3 the first time).
I am finding it way easier (difficulty wise) on the 360. And the controls seem off.
The bumpers just do not feel right.
Also PvP seems messed up on the 360. I am level 17 and was invaded by a guy who was lvl 100 and something. Was messed up.

But I am having a blast going back and doing a new character.

Can't wait to get my new (new to me) copy of Demon's Souls in the mail later this week to start a fresh run of that again also. Might even load up the old save to check out my old builds.

That's interesting that the game might play different 360 vs. ps3. I was thinking that about the PC version... not sure how they'd adapt the controls to keyboard/mouse. But, maybe it would basically just need a gamepad.

Archer - what sort of character are you playing?

I need to get back into Demon's Souls too...

I dont think it is easier (it was probably just that you had played before so you expected enemies) they use the same guide weapons and enemies do the same damage/have the same hit points and require the same souls to level up. I guess it is possible the AI maybe a little less or something like that but I wouldnt expect it to be a big difference if so. I could also understand online being different

Bill - Went with Knight this time around. I was mostly doing magic builds before. This is actually my first non magic build in Dark Souls.

And maybe that is why it seems easier. I mostly did only tank Builds, and mostly Knights in Demon's Souls. And then when I did Dark I only did Magic builds. And I struggled for a long time. That might be why it seems so much easier.
So yeah Kianta, its less likely that the game is actually easier, although it seems that way. Its more likely just my style of play, and the fact I have played it before.

As for the controls, the one thing that makes it seem odd on the 360 controller is the difference between the bumpers/shoulder buttons. It feels odd using them for an attack like that on the 360 controller. On the PS3 controller they button is small and so is the controller, so the way you hold it seems fine. But with the 360 being so much larger, and not having any other games on the 360 use that style of control layout, it just felt really awkward for the first few hours. If you even think about controls for FPS between the consoles, the button layout is different. Shooting is triggers on 360, and the L1/R1 on PS3 (which would be the bumpers on the 360). I am used to it now. And now I have no idea how anyone could play this with a mouse and keyboard.

And I have to say I was so ecstatic over the smallest thing when I started playing. It put a smile on my face. The sound a warrior/knight build has when they have on heavy armor when they walk. The clang and heavy feel the character makes/has. I was missing that from my other builds because they were magic builds and wore light armor or robes. The clunky thud you make when you attempt to roll or dodge. And as soon as I heard it, I said out loud "So the world might be mended".

That's funny, I have a much easier time with magic builds vs. tank. Though, I'll admit that my magic builds tend to be highly vulnerable defensively. I think it's just that I like to take stuff out from a distance and avoid getting too close. I'm a sniper. If I can kill stuff before it even knows I'm there, I will do that.

I can imagine what you mean with the controller difference too. I think part of the reason I tend to prefer ps3 over 360 is I'm more used to the smaller controller and part of that is how the R1/L1 buttons are placed. Though, usually once I get using it for a few minutes it doesn't matter that much.

Yeah, my faith build character wears rattly armor and I have trouble getting used to it. My sorcerer always wore light stuff and never made much noise. Now, I'm keenly aware that I'm announcing myself as a trot up to enemies. I know both D* Souls games do a lot with sounds and sound matters. Listening can often give you many clues as to what's about to happen.

I've heard the black knight halberd is one of the most prized weapons in the game. Most of the elite players killing Four Kings in that video were using one.

Thank god im done with the tomb of giants now. Nito was actually pretty easy. I just basically tanked him and took the damage from him and the skeletons. He was slow enough that i could do a healing miracle no problem after an attack. Now ive got to either deal with those boars (which im still having trouble with) or finish the four kings. Im not in any rush to go back through blighttown, so ill save BoC for last.

You should be able to warp to the Quelag's sister's bonfire and avoid Blight entirely. Hm, unless maybe you didn't find her. She's behind a hidden wall come to think of it.

Alternately, there's a way into Blight swamp via a New Londo spiral staircase. It's still some fighting to get there and down, but it's a lot easier than via Depths. You may need the master key to open the door from New Londo unless you already left Blight swamp that way (the real key is found along the path in a chest I think).

I love Blight swamp! Just walk on to the wheel, don't jump or roll. You really don't need poison resist. Just accept that you will be poisoned most of the time. It does very slow damage that you can mostly ignore. If it gets bad, just estus. Or re-tag the bonfire. Bumping the bonfire to 10 estus is worth doing so you have plenty. Also, go back to Undead Asylum for the rusted iron ring so walking through the water doesn't slow you down.

My impression is that most people never upgrade resistance stat since bumping other stats almost always will boost your resistances anyway (though, not as much) and other stats give you more important (damage-related) improvements. Like, if you look at character build pages, resistance is often never touched.

As a joke/challenge, I started a pyromancer last night that I'm only going to boost resistance with when I level up. I'm curious how far I can get and/or if it actually ends up working out (ultimately, higher resistance could really help, who knows).

Youll probably have to bump some other attributes to equip Weapons/Armor etc. But it would be cool if youre just running with the default clothes and with just the Pyro Glove.

On a side note, I think I bumped my Resistance fairly good, I know for sure that my endurance was constantly leveled up. Ill have to pop in the game and check it out.

I was thinking I might pick Demon's back up in mid May, then try to be playing and into it around the 31st for the end. I was thinking maybe I'd start a knight/tank and try to play in body form as much as possible (pvp and boss summoning -- more like I have with Dark Souls).

I actually just ordered Skyrim. I'm a little burned out on playing Dark Souls at the moment.
