This weekend so far
Tokyo Godfathers
http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/28...
I enjoyed it very much. It follows 3 strangely different homeless people in tokyo as they find an abandoned baby. There were laugh out loud moments, mostly from "uncle bag" a homless crossdressing homosexual. And there were also obligatory touching moments.
Memories

This is Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo's work. There are 3 separate episodes each standing along.
The first episode "Magnetic Rose" was probably my favorite. It rings true to 1980's sci-fi space anime.
The Triplets of Belleville
http://www.sonyclassics.com/triplets/#
ok... what.. the ... hell.. was... this? It was fun to watch. There is hardly any dialog at all. The plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Here let me explain: Grandma buys pudgy grandson a dog, he's bored with dog, buys him a tricycle, she then trains him vigourously to compete in the tour de france. Then during the race he's kidnapped by the french mafia. The mafia uses him in a betting ring to see who can peddle the furthest while looking at a projector. Oh and then there are these old triplets, that do 1920's style dancing and jigs who help the grandma get her son back... yeah...

Yojimbo and Sanjuro. I prefer the one where Mifune wanders into the village where two crime families are fighting each other. I have both of these movies, I should be able to say which one it is, though I only bought them recently.
I, too, have been on a Kurosawa hunt. Do you mean to say Hollywood Video, Qpalzm? The HV here is Loaded with foreign/Criterion movies.
Stray Dog -- Kurosawa. Criterion. I think this might one of his firsts, if not the. It's about a rookie detective who loses his gun to a pickpocket. The search for his gun leads him into a greater quest. The slices of life, dialogue, acting, cinematography are all excellent.
Mamma Roma -- Pier Paolo Pasolini. Criterion. A prostitute from Rome returns to southern Italy or Sicily to find her son. She brings him back to Rome to try and make him a better boy. Very much a slice of Italian life. I'm pretty sure it's part of the neo-realizm style in Italy. The acting, dialogue and cinematography are great.
The others I've rented and haven't seen yet:
Ikiru -- Kurosawa. Criterion.
The Tin Drum -- can't remember the director. Criterion.

Akira. I have the regular version (non-special edition) of this on DVD. It was the first I'm I'd watched it with subtitles. It's a Much different movie. There is so much more information that was left out. It's great. HOWEVER, the new English dubbing sucks, in my opinion. I kept my old Akira English dubbing tape. My friends and I agree it's the best dubbing we've seen. Come on now, the voice who plays Leonardo in Ninja Turtles is Kenayda in Akira. Along with every other memorable voice. The sinister scruffled baby voice from that man in the hover pod is Classic! "You can't run away.... I came to get you." I love that.

Yeah. Akira has had a couple of different translations and dubs over the years.
All the new Akira DVDs have a re-translated subtitle track.
Both dubs are ho-hum, IMO. Then again, I generally don't like dubs.
Edit: well hollywood video had a couple. Mine had Sanjuro, and The Sea is watching. There is a specialty anime rental store about 20 minutes away from me. I'm sure they have japanese cinema.
I dunno.. http://www.animationsworld.com/pages/1/index.htm
The website doesn't say much.

Just watched Sin City (on SVCD). Pretty damn cool; but I must see this again whenever it comes out on DVD to really give a good response to it. But I must say this: high action, high killing, and damn, Brittany Murphy, Devon Aoki, and Jessica Alba. Just.... damn.

Yeah; that kind of movie needs the best quality one can get; black + white + cam = not the best experience. But they did do a good job.

I saw Sin City recently too, it was awesome.
Triumph of the Spirit was great, Williem Dafoe was good. If you liked Schindler's List you would like this one.
The Doors, I watched that again today for the first time in about two years. Still great.

My girlfriend saw War of the Worlds and told me it was crap... full of incoherence.

I have not heard anyone talk crap about Sin City. It is hands down the most enjoyable movie of the year.
I watched Band of Brothers, The Usual Suspects, Mean Streets, and Old School this week. All are great. I got Chappelle Show season one in a week or so ago, I am gonna try and watch that next week.

I've never seen the Usual Suspects, I was told I'd like it tho.
I wish I would've seen Sin City earlier, I need to stay up on trailors. I never saw a trailor for it until recently, then thought it looks pretty damn good. I wasn't disappointed.

Just about done with 24 Season 1. That's pretty much all I've watched lately. And some of the The Ali G show. So hilarious, I have to imagine not a lot of people even give it a chance. |
