A lot of books out there deal with grammar first and they're generally transliterated into romaji. I guess that's useful for conversation but I'm more interested in reading the stuff right now. I do have one of those basic CD sets for pronunciation.
The book I'm using is "Japanese Step by Step". It's dry, but it's the only book (locally) I could find that focuses on the reading first. The guy throws out a lot of stuff that seems pretty arbitrary, so cheap dictionary is really helpful. There's also a book out there called "Reading and Writing Japanese" which is really essential for reading the kanji and figuring out stroke order.
I shouldn't have traded my Japanese Saturn to Frank, lol. But I have a bunch of cheap japanese mangas that the local comic shop was selling. I buys them. There's another book out there called "Japanese the Manga Way", which is pretty useful too.
Of course I still suck big time, but I can look at some random Japanese website and say "aha, I sort of know what that means".

I might just go to the bookstore this weekend and see what sorta book I can find that I can learn some Japanese reading. If I find anything good,
I'll tell ya. Playing Japanese RPGs and being able to understand them is one of my goals.
This Coon has a mint, almost spanking new Japanese Sega Saturn sitting on the shelf with a certain Caps name on it, if ya ever are interested.

I was at Salvation Army one day and it was sitting on the shelf, still in its box with its manual, controller, and all hookups, looked untouched.
Though i've since put my paws on it, I kept it mint.
