Looks like there are some significant load times for most/all of the demos. That could equal serious battery drain and gamer annoyance. Sounds pretty bad to me. |

Nintendo totally dominated the home console marketplace with the NES. Look at them now, they obselete(for console, they are doing great at the hand held). Sony totally destroyed them.

Right now i am not impressed with my DS at all, i will probably chuck it onto ebay uk this weekend. If they can market games that really utilize the second screen, then it will be fine, but right now i am not impressed with the DS. (of course, it is VERY early, I will probably pick up castlevania DS at some point to complete my castlevania mega collection, but i will probably wait for it to get clearanced out).
I think the gameboy will continue to do well bc of its huge user base. Ultimately, i think there is room for both nintendo and sony to both do well in the portable marketplace because they are both getting a ton of third party support.

I was just wondering why charging at the cigarette lighter was being given as a simple and convenient remedy for short battery life. Purchasing extra gear to go with my already less-than-cheap portable to remedy a flaw in the hardware and/or software certainly doesn't seem simple or convenient... but maybe that's just me. |

The NES has nothing to do with this. Sony came around the time we had a Nintendo (SNES) vs Sega (genesis) battle... Nintendo didn't dominate anything except in Japan at that moment. Like grkangel10 said, comparing their previous hold on the console market with the SNES and the current dominance with their portables is silly. |

As was stated earlier, PSX didn't go up against the NES, it went up against the last years of the SNES and then against the 64. By that time, Sega had already taken a fair chunk of the market, and Nintendo's hold was considerably lessened from the NES days. As far as you being impressed with DS right now, I agree that there's not a lot to grab your attention. If you look at the games coming in the future though, you'll see that there are some pretty nice things coming out. |

Although I usually play my portable plugged into the wall anyway (since I don't travel much), battery life usually isn't a factor for me. However, I like knowing that if I want to, I can play for a while without having to worry about the battery dying right in the middle of an important point in the game.

I love the red light on the SP, just briliant. It's useful as it lets you know your system is gonna die and you can get a chance to save/charge. Now the red light on the Nomad...that was just a cruel joke, something to let you know your system will die within the next 30 seconds...have a good day.

Presumably you're not going to just find yourself in a car with a portable system, but know ahead of time if it'll be necessary.
Systems don't come with memory cards, either.

I'm not trying to say that battery life is totally irrelevant, but I see people doging about short battery life a disproportionately large amount considering how often it really would pose a problem for them.

I think you're downplaying the importance of battery life considerably. There are people who use their portable game system several days in a row, on a regular basis. 2-4 hours of battery life means that they HAVE to remember to recharge their system in between EVERY gaming session, or else they're screwed. That's a giant pain in the ass.
I'm a pretty intelligent guy, but when I was commuting daily, I would often forget to put my iPod in the charger at the end of the day. Luckily I could still get a second day of commuting music out of it when that happened, but if it had poor battery life, I either wouldn't have purchased it in the first place, or returned it/sold it on eBay after becoming an extremely frustrated and dissatisfied customer. |

Nintendo declined them and went to another company (which didn't pan out)
so Sony said "screw you" and made their own console.

Funny thing is I didn't even mention anything about dislike for Sony or anything in this topic. I just stated an observation about something I noticed and of course that automatically means something else and has to turn into something about being against Sony and all this fanboyism. Wow.. you think that's bad news..
http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=4010
Reports are coming in that the initial shipment of PSP units is seeing some defective units getting to the public.
These defects include:
# Dead pixels, as many as 3 per screen with the problem.
# Broken UMD drives.
# Analog nubs not working.
Sony has yet to make any official announcement about any of these issues, and about how users with any of these problems can recitfy them.
Be sure to check back for Sony's response to these issues.
UPDATE: More problems ahoy!
# Analog nubs not just not working, but actually falling off.
# PSP is turned on, but does not start up.
# Screen has air bubbles.
# Screen has dust on the inside.
Also, as for the UMD drive problems, some have reported the drive not closing completely, and the UMD, when the PSP is twisted, actually flies out!
Most retailers are stressing the fact that these problems don't occur in the majority of PSPs, but take caution in importing until Sony gives an official announcement.
Those are a lot of defects..

Let's hope Sony tries to fix their lackluster customer support record, and actually, fixes ALL these PSP's, for free, and sent each person a free demo, or at least a $30 off PSP item cupcom(sp )
We akll knew(those that don't live in Sony's ass, that problems would be present in the PSP. It has happened in the PSX, PS2, and now this, the PSP. 99% of these "issues" should of been fixed BEFORE Japanese launch. But it is Sony afterall.

I wish this would actually lift the blinders on all those people who think Sony can do no wrong and see the crappy quality they actually Deliever. And people might actually see that Sony isn't all that. That in fact they rely on others to do quality games for them compared to delievering much of anything quality on their own.. Not even the systems. I wish this would show people that and maybe we'd start seeing people realising that. But most likely it probably wont have much impact as much as I'd like. It could be the begining to Sony's Downfall from the top... but not likely... :
