mario land 1 kind of gets a free pass as it was the first time that such a game was even attempted on a little LCD handheld... compared to the Tiger LCD games available at the time, it was absolutely mind-blowingly amazing.

I thought Mario Land 2 was GREAT :(
I would have given it a 7.5 or 8 out of 10 |

I liked it too, but the Wario Land ones were better.

Shining Force NEO: Three hours into it... not going back. Absolutely boring. I had high hopes for this one, too. 3/10
Ys: The Ark of Napishtim: Pretty fun, oldschool hack n' slash RPG. The story is so-so, the gameplay is decent, and the challenge mainly lies with leveling up when you go into each new area and the monsters are just waiting to hand your booty to you. One plus is that your character's appearance actually changes when you get new armor/weapons/etc (don't know why, but it really bothers me when they don't take the time to do this in games). 7/10 |

Splinter Cell: Double Agent - 8/10 - I've kinda been holding off on starting something new because Persona 3 was supposed to drop tomorrow, but with Persona 3 delayed until the 14th of August, I went ahead and fired this up this evening. I dig the new angle of an anguished Sam Fisher, I hope it works out for the entire singleplayer game. Looks great, plays as great as the past iterations, so far.

I still have a Y's for PS2 sealed, unfortunately it seems like one of the few sealed rarer RPGs on PS2 not worth a dime

It's a hack n' slash RPG. Think Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, only not quite as good. |

Think Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance except a million times better because it has anime characters, and thats what really makes a game great. |

So true!
But I was saying that Baldur's Gate is better. Ys is not as good as Baldur's Gate. Yah! |

Yes, it is Ys.
From Wikipedia: "Y's", arises from a typographical error in the packaging of the English-language versions of the Sega Master System.

Riviera: The Promised Land (PSP) - 9/10 - Lovin' it. The story is interesting, the art is outstanding, the structure of the game is unique, and the combat fun. Some slow load times here and there, but not enough to mitigate my enjoyment of this Atlus game.

Devil May Cry 3: I'm about halfway through so far. I'm worried I'm not going to make it to the end, because of the next game I "review." Anyway, the combat's really fun, and the story is fairly compelling, though I'm not that into the general theme of demons and whatnot. The graphics are good for a PS2 game, but I guess I've seen better. At any rate... I do prefer Ninja Gaiden's method of leveling up weapons versus this game's method. It's more streamlined and less overwhelming. But, Dante is a badass mutha-something and has a level of "cool" other game protagonists don't have. 8/10
Shadow of the Colossus: Holy freaking crap. This. Game. Is. Incredible. I picked it up at K-Mart for $14 (it rang up at 19.99, but the lady did some quick calculations and adjusted the price... much thanks to her), and started it up to "just try" after work tonight. I played for two hours straight. I couldn't help it. The graphics aren't the best, but the art style more than makes up for it. The game stutters some (the framerate), but it doesn't really bother me at all. And the gameplay... talk about compelling! As much as I don't want it to, this game might be what prevents me from beating DMC 3. It's so different from anything else.. and so... fresh. I can tell that this will be a contender for one of my top games of all time. So far I'd give it a 10/10.
Coming soon(ish): God of War, Jak 3, and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. |
