I couldn't paste this earlier regarding the PSP, because when I made that post I was using the Wii and not on my PC. It turns out all PSP games require Progressive Scan, otherwise you can only watch UMD movies and view pictures.
If you are planning on picking up a new PSP Slim and want to play games on your SDTV, you may want to rethink your purchase, check the back of your TV or at least decide how badly you really want to play PSP Slim on it. According to the photo, the only way you can do this is to play connected with a D-terminal AV cable or component cables and the content must be output in progressive scan. UMD movies seem to work fine, but games are a no go unless your TV supports progressive scan.

i think there should have been two, one on the other side of the screen in basically the same place, for dual analog. would have made porting ps2 games a lot easier too.

The nub just needs to be higher up. Where it is now, you basically have to bend and angle your thumb weird if you're resting the unit against your palm....basically whenever you hold the system to play it. To be comfortable the numb should have your thumb almost entirely straight IMO.

Every Valve-developed game is greater than any J-RPG(save Xenogears * love * ) ever created. You may want to take it with a grain of salt though, I have a seriosu hard on for the developers at Valve. I do gaurantee that it will be the greatest 2 hours of gaming for you this year * smile *

P.S. I cant bring myself to finish DQVIII, no matter how much I adore it. Its far too long.

Dead Rising (360) - 8/10 - I'm not sure I "get" this game although I do like it. So I can restart the game at any save point and keep my stats? Why would they do this? Doesn't it make sense to just replay the opening sequences a bunch of times to fluff your stats?

And on one of the first missions I had to meet up with a dude in a gunfight and he ended up dying which ended my game completely. WTF kind of learning curve is that?

I did feel supremely satisfied using a metal pole to wack my way through a pack of zombies. * yes * It felt great.

FEAR (360) - 7.5/10 - Seems pretty good overall. Nothing unique or impressive...just well done. The AI seems slightly better than other FPS's though which is nice. But every time I think "wow this is great" I end up walking down corridor after corridor and it reminds me of an average FPS.

you can spend some continues or you can spend some time memorizing and honing your skills.

The games are 100% possible to beat without continuing.

He's not only beaten Metal Slug 1-5 without continuing, he's done it on one life and taken video to prove it.

See...that sounds entirely not fun to me. I would much rather see the entire game then have played level 1 600 times and only seeing the last level for maybe 2 minutes before the game was over. I can respect those who can stick it out and work towards not continuing but I'm just not one of those people.

The good thing is that the game allows you to do it either way.

Besides, you don't necessarily have to go through it the whole way without continuing ever... it's just an eventual goal.

And once you can 1cc it, you start going for better and better scores.

To many people (like myself) the quest to beat one's high score offers limitless replay value.

The Legend of Zelda : Phantom Hourglass (NDS) - 9.3/10
Some might disagree with such a high score, but I loved the original game (Wind Waker) and my love for the series transferred over to the DS.
While the story isn't as sweet as Wind Waker, it's still a great story, and the characters in the game are great additions.
Like any other Legend of Zelda game, the boss fights were just superb and like Wind Waker, the graphics were goofy and fun to look at.
While there's somewhat a learning curve with the gameplay (mostly with the rolling action) once you get it down, there's loads of fun.
And it's really cool that you can draw your own destination for your boomerang (and another weapon, I just don't want to spoil this).
Another really neat addition was the customization for your ship parts, that was alot of fun! I haven't gotten all the pieces, so I'll probably wind up
restarting the game and getting more (I saved before the boss, so I don't think I can get back to the normal game) and also the mini-games were fun stuff too.

Really, the only bad things I can bring up, is there was really no search for heart pieces (I think 5 hearts can be obtained, but they come as wholes) and that they kinda lost a bunch of side-quests, like searches for bottles and such. However, there still are side-quests, so it's all good.

In the end, Phantom Hourglass is a great game for the DS.

Your point that it can't be done? Metal slug isn't even remotely the most difficult run-n-gun game out there...

That's what I'm saying - the game works for both crowds - the people who want to get better and the people who want to just have fun. As far as I know, there are not limits on the continues you can get (at least not on the arcade games or the Wii version of Metal Slug Anthology)

When you have unlimited continues, what does it matter whether there's a life meter or not? .

A life bar in games like Metal Slug is nothing more than a way to disguise extra lives. It's up to the developer to decide whether they think you should take 3 hits before game over or some other number - whether it goes through the death animation after each hit is irrelevant.

In a game with unlimited continues, you're free to use them to your heart's content if you want to play the whole game through. What, then, is the problem that you have with people who wish to artificially handicap themselves and choose not to continue in order to improve their skill?

It's quite understandable that you would think that playing through the first couple levels over and over again because you keep dying isn't fun. I don't know that there are many people who would disagree with that. However, there is a level of satisfaction that comes through improvement, whether it be getting one level higher, beating the game, getting a new high score, etc. I would say that performing better than the last time IS fun, and as long as you are improving, it will continue to be fun. There are points that you may end up reaching a bottleneck where you can't seem to advance any further or improve any more. It's even more satisfying to overcome those roadblocks.

And if you ever do get frustrated, you've got those continues and stuff to fall back on to let off some steam and just go wild.

I guess my point (if I had one) would be that in the Metal Slug games, I very rarely feel as though I die through no fault of my own. Having played games pretty much my whole life, I can usually see exactly why I died, and exactly what I could have and should have done to avoid it. It is very rare that I feel that a particular death was unavoidable in the Metal Slug games.

There are games that seem to give cheap deaths (Midway's arcade games in particular are notoriously cheap), and games that do not - and I believe the Metal Slug games fall into the latter category. If you die, it's not necessarily because you suck, but it is generally due to an error you make (the most common of which in my case is not paying as close attention to your surroundings as you should)

This is turning into an interesting discussion. * yes *

So what are your thoughts about a game like Dragon's Lair? Sure you can get through the entire game on a single life if you work towards it, but is it skill or just memorization? In theory this applies to something like Metal Slug as well. There's more adapatability with MS but technically it's all about memorizing how to react to the enemies. But you still always walk right and each enemy always appears in the same place at exact the same time. I think maybe their fire pattern might be the only thing that could change (until they try to adapt to what you do). Or am I wrong?
