I have a Blackberry, and I think a lot of my games are different. Each week they give out a free demo, and I've gotten a few of those, then deleted when my time ran out. I have no idea why mine would cost more.

if the characters in an RPG suck, the RPG sucks. Period. I don't care how cool, innovative, or different the battle system is - I'll take a fighting game if I want a cool battle system. The only reason to play RPGs is for the characters and the story.
TWEWY had awful characters and the most cliche story in an RPG since the original dragon warrior.

Man, I could not for the life of me see anything redeeming in that combat system. Control two characters at once? Why? The top screen "system" was just stupid - tap directions and then hope the attack turns over the right card. You were guessing, hitting direction keys, and performing regular attacks on the bottom screen. Convoluted, cumbersome, poorly-conceived imo.
I only made it to day three, so I'm sure there's a whole lot that I'm missing out on. Still, I can't bring myself to play the game again. Next plane ride, maybe!

I'm only on the second day, but I think it's the overall personality of the game that I like more than anything else. We'll see, hopefully I don't wind up hating it as much as you do/did, but I do see flaws in the combat system so far.

Die Hard Arcade (Arcade) - 7/10 - I hate the beat 'em up genre, and this didn't change my opinion. I was mashing buttons most of the time, wondering why my kick combos did astronomically greater amounts of damage than a metal pipe to the face or... a GUN SHOT. Bosses weren't too creative, the story is so nonexistant it's not even funny. I've never played a game that actually has a story... with less of a story than Die Hard Arcade. The cut scenes are 3 seconds long and add nothing to the game, why bother? I liked the "quick-time" events (whatever you call them) and some of the items are sweet (Anti Tank Gun and Missile Launcher) but what the hell are they doing in a skyscraper? The ending was fantastic. "Thank you!"
Fun for a beat 'em up, something I'd play with friends at home, but not something I'd spend money on in an arcade.

Who plays a beatemup for the story?
What was the story behind Final Fight? Haggar's Daughter/Cody's Girlfriend was kidnapped. Let's beat up everyone to get her back.
Golden Axe? Death Adder is a douchebag. Let's beat everyone up to kill him.
Streets of Rage? There's too much crime. Let's beat everyone up to make the city safer.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Shredder's being a dildo again. Let's kick some shell and stop him.
No offense, but if you're complaining about the story in a beatemup, you're obviously in the wrong genre. That's like complaining about the lack weapon variety in MLB 2K8. All we got is bats! There's no chainsaws, tire irons, rocket launchers or any of that cool stuff.
Your other complaints (weapons not doing enough damage, weak bosses) are valid though.

Smarmy - I didn't hate the game at all. The points I did pick on were relatively minor compared to the gameplay, which was good despite the fact it's a genre I don't like.
benstylus - I know, 'who plays beat em ups for the story?' Even light gun shoots have longer dialogue scenes the the 2-3 second sentence fragments in Die Hard Arcade that are barely worth interrupting the action for. At the end of SoR, when the boss guy asks you to join him, there's more text than in all of DHA! Still I know story wasn't it's strong point (Cmon they could've at least based it off DIE HARD) but it surpassed even arcade games I've played in terms of lack of story or ending. 7/10 for a beat em up is huge for me! The only games that would surpass that are Simpsons Arcade, TMNT, and maybe SoR2.

The NES version has the cool 2 player versus mode, but i like the master system's co-op better. So if I had to pick one, it'd be the MS version, though they're both cheap enough that owning both is also feasible.

GH: Aerosmith (360)- 7/10
Not an Aerosmith fans, but I got tired of the same songs on GH2 and 3. Setlist is pretty good though, and I imagine it would be awesome for actual fans of the band. I mostly got it because all I do is play drums on Rock Band, so I wanted to start playing some guitar again.
The game is pretty easy though so far. I'm an average to pretty good player, and I've 5 stared the first 3 set lists. I don't know if it will get drastically harder, but this may deter some of the really great players from wanting to pick this up.

Cracked open the battlechest in celebration of Diablo III today.
Diablo II - 10/10
Multiplayer is pure sex on D2. I'm most definately addicted again.
Diablo - 5/10
I haven't played this since it first came out. I'm glad the game evolved like it did. This wasn't nearly as fun as I remembered. Its all..... slow and stuff. Interface is pretty ancient feeling too.
Edit: I would just like to mention, that although I am giving Diablo a low score now, that it just compared to other things I could be playing now. I understand why it would have got near perfect scores back in '97, but it just hasn't aged particularly well for me. |
