I'm doing this thing where I buy a $20 game from gamestop, return it after a week, and use the store credit to get another game, and this weeks pick was Bioshock. I have to say, this game is fair. I only played some, but I'm just not seeing the critical acclaim. I mean, the atmosphere is great and all, but it seems way over-hyped. This all might be just because I'm not a huge FPS fan, but perfect 10 all around don't seem all that fitting.

No, you're right to hate it. The game is dump. There's way better FPS games.

I really couldn't get into Bioshock.
I thought the beginning was great; there was tons of atmosphere, the user is left in the dark about a lot of what is going on... But the more I played, the more let down I became. The story fizzles into nothingness, the "Upgrades" are boring and don't add much to the game, despite the lengthy number of possible differences, and the bosses//mini-bosses are just plain annoying.
I will say that I enjoyed the last fight of the game, but that is hardly a saving grace from one of the most critically acclaimed FPS's in a long time. Doesn't hold up to the cake, in the end. |

Having read and enjoyed Ayn Rand, I couldn't help but love Bioshock. The story was as interesting to me as the atmosphere was engaging; the developers created a truly unique world leagues beyond the typical sci-fi/fantasy bullcrap gamers are forced to endure (not all bad, mind you) incorporating the philosophy of one of America's most controversial 20th century thinkers. Given the limited overlap between typical gamers and Ayn Rand readers, this went largely unnoticed (and remains so; rarely ever does anyone praising the game discuss Ayn Rand's influence). I'd love for developers to embrace the ideas of great thinkers and writers; the last game to do so that I'm aware of was Eternal Darkness's heavy use of Lovecraftian themes (though the gameplay itself was lacking, Bioshock's is not).
So yeah, great fudging game. Stoked for the sequel. |

Wait, and you LIKED Bioshock? I thought Ayn Rand fanatics level-headed fans hated Bioshock for it's portrayal of her theory. |

Loved it. It doesn't "portray" her theory so much as it looks at possible pitfalls to her ideals. I don't subscribe to many of Ayn Rand's beliefs but I've always found her at least interesting. Bioshock's story is a sort of response to Ayn Rand and, in my eyes, more tribute to her work than critique (you don't need to craft a multi-million dollar game to say AYN RAND SUCKS).
The dialog between sides is much more interesting to me than determining who is "right" and who is "wrong."
Ayn Rand is one of those polarizing figures that tends to have hugely devoted/obsessive believers and I can see why they would be up in arms...but that's the nature of being an obsessive fanatic. I'm not in that boat. |

Did you see all the hat I was getting for my Halo 2 review? It was a mountainous pile of hate mail at my door - most likely from fanboys.
