2017 is almost over, and while there remain many great unplayed games from this year for most of us, 2018 is nearly upon us.
What are your most anticipated titles that are likely to release next year? fun one, which do you think will be the biggest let down?
Ace Combat 7, Dragon Quest 11, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Spiderman, Project Octopath Traveler, and Vampyr are all up there for me. also trails of cold steel 3 along with 1 and 2 hitting ps4. and im sure im forgetting some as I quickly bang this out. of these, Vampyr I think has the most potential to let me down, maybe. - KCD ended up being the one that's let me down the most so far as of july, its just not good on consoles because they didnt put enough time into adjusting the systems to a controller, but im gonna try again on PC later. but vampyr was janky too, great concepts though as an IP it has potential, feels like an old game
overall I think the biggest disappointment for me will be sea of thieves, that has been high up there for me since its announcement but the more that comes out about it the more its not what I hoped for in nearly any way. I guess i'll just keep playing sid meiers pirates, maybe look into some mods for it to satisfy my needs for good fun pirating adventures.
predictions.....just throw some fun crap out and we'll see if any of it sticks. -pokemon switch is huge- it will be next year lol, so this will push to next years topic -smash switch announced - got it, but not exactly a stretch to expect it -kingdom hearts 3 actually releases - missed it THAT much...maybe -FF7 remake dated for 2019, lots of new info and footage at E3 and throughout the year - with the project scrapping and starting over we might see it for the 25th anniversary in 2022 lol -Bethesda finally reveals Starfield, but does not reveal ES6. - half right -Cyberpunk 2077 gets some new info revealed but still no real trailer, indicating that the game is 2020 at best, and cdpr's last game on current gen consoles before shifting to what comes next - fairly accurate, still no gameplay trailer to the public, behind closed doors demo was pre-alpha, looks like 2020 at best is likely though -Red dead redemption 2 slips again, but only a little. got it..for now -far cry 5 ends up being surprisingly good, like really good - eh, its very ok, but not what I expected -mainline fire emblem for switch revealed - got it, yay!!! -Ubisoft and Ancel announce that Wild just wasn't working and focus is being moved to BG&E2 (I don't want that to happen, but no news about this game at all has me worried)not exactly announced, but no news on wild still feels bad -Dragon Age 4 revealed but is a ways off - got it, 3 years out -the backlash from battlefront 2 causes problems for Anthem, EA blames bioware seems to be a thing, much content I see for anthem seems to indicate heavy skepticism for anthem -switch virtual console is revealed, and our Wii U VC purchases carry (hey I can dream lol) - once again Nintendo shows me why I didn't buy a Nintendo console for over 15 years -more remasters (I know this one is a stretch) ya, but I mean ..that's gonna be forever. im betting ps5 and next gen is full of them too -ports of games from the last year or two to the switch, LOTS of them. indies and AAA's alike. (Furi was announced today) also not a stretch, im sure it will continue -no new consoles revealed - accurate, and I don't think we see them next year either -will see Nintendo begin to have all its main teams focus on switch and 3ds continues to dwindle. (this may already be the case?) - somewhat? 3ds games, at least major ones, seem to be slowing, but support for the system til 2020 was announced
actually I just saw that death stranding was a lot further along than has been announced, and that has even entered the playable build stage and we would see it sooner than we thought, that would be a good prediction, a big reveal sometime soon... apparently the upcoming game awards is supposed to have no less than 12 new things unseen, maybe one of them is death stranding gameplay.
Pretty much everything you've listed, Tony lol. Throw in Ni no Kuni 2, Monster Hunter World, God of War, Detroit: Become Human, A Way Out, the Pokemon RPG and other things I'm sure I'm forgetting. Should be another amazing year!
As far as predictions go, I think Anthem gets pushed out of 2018. I also think we'll see what Retro Studios (new IP) and From Software (Bloodborne 2) are working on. I also think we'll see footage from Cyberpunk 2077 and all cry tears of joy!
lol ya I was gonna throw NNK2 and DBH on there along with some others but wanted to keep it to a few of the very highest. Anthem getting pushed to 19 is very possible, and good predictions on the others as well.
and ya I didn't either, but The Know (rooster teeth) had that update on death stranding a couple days ago i'll have to see if I can find it again.
the holy prophets recently put out a hiring announcement for some artists with an emphasis on vehicle design for CP2077, it could still be a long long way off..maybe even the last great big game for the current gen one day? I guess we will see
Not a ton, really. I guess I'm interested in Pokemon for Switch, even though I've only played Red/Blue and Silver/Gold. I'd still like to catch up on the series, but I keep getting further and further behind. I think I would be the most interested if they finally go full 3D (for a full Pokemon game). Aside from that, the Kirby game will be fun to play with the family, and I'm curious to see how Yoshi turns out, even though I'd much prefer another Woolly World.
I'll try to avoid naming off all my wish list stuff. Just making predictions, I think we're very likely to see a Smash Bros announcement, although I don't know that it will come out in 2018. I'll also be surprised if the whole year passes and there's still no word on Mario Maker for Switch. Finally, I think we'll hear about a new 2D Zelda in 2018. Oh yeah, and VC.
Edit: Looks like most people are including wants/wish-list type stuff, so I'll add mine (copy/pasted from the Switch thread a few weeks back):
12) F-Zero - I'm actually a little on the fence about this one after playing Fast RMX and being completely underwhelmed, but I'm sure Nintendo would do a better job.
11) Adventures of Mana - Final Fantasy Adventure is one of my favorite games of all time. I've wanted a minor remake for a long time, mostly for a graphical overhaul. There was a remake a while back that did this quite nicely, but it was only available as a mobile game in Japan. There was also Sword of Mana, but that one changed up quite a bit and I didn't care for it very much.
10) Secret of Mana remake - Depending on how much they do with it. If it's mostly a graphical overhaul, I'm not as interested. But if they fix/improve some things, and add some bonus content, I definitely have to play it.
9) Yoshi's Woolly World 2 - The Yoshi game they showed at E3 looks interesting, but I'd much rather have another Woolly World instead, my family loved that game.
8) 2D Castlevania - No Metroidvania, just another 2D linear Castlevania game like Super Castlevania IV.
7) 2D Final Fantasy - Similar to IV/VI, with no job/class system. Octopath Traveler may fill this void for me, however.
6) Super Mario 3D World 2 - Odyssey is amazing, but I still love the linear style of SM3DW too.
5) 2D Mario - Something new and exciting that revolutionizes the genre similar to what BotW and Odyssey did for their genres. Mostly, just not another NSMB game.
4) Donkey Kong Country 4 - More like the original trilogy, not the Returns games.
3) Mario Kart 9 - MK8D better not be the only MK we get on the Switch.
2) 2D Zelda - No touch/motion gimmicks, just a solid 2D Zelda game like ALBW.
1) Mario Maker Switch - This one HAS to happen. I really can't imagine they WON'T make it. The first one took a year and a half of my life and I'll gladly do the same for the sequel. Just give me more level themes/power-ups/hazards/enemies/bosses and I'm good.
I'm pretty pumped for God of War - but I hope they didn't make it too much like Tomb Raider, The Witcher 3, Horizon, Zelda, or others. I like the God of War formula...HUGE set pieces, lots of blood and action, some puzzle elements, and great cinematics. Is this coming in 2018? lol no clue really, but that's my thought.
I'm wishful for a massive Switch price drop from Nintendo because they are abundant, and because Nintendo is nice and love their fans and give them what they want all the time.
@Karaiya that is probably kingdom come deliverance, that's in my top 5 for sure. dq11 is coming to switch I am pretty sure I saw that
@Admiral I hope the same for god of war, I love those games you mentioned but I hope they don't just turn gow into that. it is looking like its gonna make 2018, but when..hmm... maybe a date coming at the game awards?
ya MG survive I am guessing is gonna suck bad and commercially flop in their eyes, and they hopefully will let the series go, without Kojima it wont be the same anyway. I wish they would make more suikoden, or let someone else do it if they don't have any interest.
im guessing RDR2, KH3 and GoW make 2018, Id be surprised of TLoU 2 and Shenmue 3 do unless S3 is further along than I realized.
> I'm just hoping for more original content. I see a ton of sequels being listed here
> but very few games being mentioned that are original.
Original IPs are risky because you need to convince people to buy it instead of Call of Duty or Mario or Forza. With the price of games being what they are, it's a lot tougher to convince someone to try something new versus a game series they're familiar with and know mostly what to expect.
To do that, many original IP games are small downloadable games so they can at least compete based on a cheaper price point. But once your IP is established as a budget game, it's not an easy thing to make the jump to the big leagues.
So, back on topic. What am I looking forward to next year? I have no idea what's even coming out next year... I have too many games I own from this year I still haven't finished, or in some cases, even played.
> I can honestly see apple and nintendo team up, they're similar in alot of ways
Nintendo Invents and tries new things.... Apple takes existing things and renames them, they don't know how to invent. They could not be more different! The worst thing that Nintendo could do is partner with that soul sucking company.
Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2. Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2. Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2. Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2. Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2. Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2. Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2. Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2. Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2. Last of Us 2 & Red Dead Redemption 2.
> I was playing Horizon Zero Dawn the other day, just wandering around the environment,
> and suddenly I was like "OMG, if RDR2 looks like this I'm going to throw up because
> of the awesomeness".
> I probably will. I'm so excited.
Man, I can only imagine! Just look at what they did with the next gen port of GTA 5. I messed around with it for the first time a few days ago and I was blown away. I can only imagine how insanely good RDR 2 will look.
Prediction: Metroid Prime 4 is not gonna come out in 2018. It just doesn't seem like something that's gonna happen. All the interviews I have seen say it might be later, and they did not show any footage at E3.
Games that look good that I can think of right now: Sea of Thieves Anthem MH World Spider Man (can't play it though, no PS4) A Way Out Kirby 2018
The games I'm most looking forward to are God Of War on PlayStation 4 and Metroid Prime 4 on Switch, though I worry a little bit about MP4 since it isn't being made by Retro and I don't want it to suck because the Prime games are the only Metroid games I like. Now that I have PS VR I guess I'm looking forward to what that has coming out too.
Ya usually by the time they announce something it's pretty far along. I like looking forward to things because I like seeing where things are going but it's also cool when they mix it up and have short times from reveal to release
I much prefer a game to be announced then released a few months later. I like seeing the finished product rather than a bunch of "in game engine" trailers that give a false representation of what the game will end up being. Theres just been too much slight of hand tricks by devs this generation that I don't trust what is shown if its revealed too early.
> Ya usually by the time they announce something it's pretty far along. I like looking

I hope so. But I remember with Bayonetta 2, it was first announced at Nintendo's Wii U event in September 2012 and it took until September 2014 for it to finally release. I hope that won't be the case this time, though, because Switch is supposed to be much easier to develop for.
> RDR2 will look godly on my Xbox One X and OLED combo
I'd rather it be released on Switch and look like the first Redemption so I could actually play it. It's nearly impossible to get more than an hour or two of TV time for anything not appropriate for the kiddos. Switch makes that easy.
Assuming these come out in 2018 (in no particular order):
Kirby The Last of Us 2 Death Stranding Far Cry 5 Metro Exodus The Inpatient Days Gone A Way Out @tonymack21 maybe we can split this if you're interested in it? Check out the trailer if you don't know what I mean. We'd only have to purchase one copy. Outlast 1 + 2 (Switch) Vampyr
Games I am also interested in:
Vampyr Cyberpunk 2077 Anthem Code Vein Detroit: Become Human Extinction Outlast God of War Kingdom Come: Deliverance Monster Hunter World Secret of Mana (remake) Spider-Man State of Decay 2 Witchfire Sea of Thieves Atelier: Lydie and Suelle Hollow
I'll have to check out the ability for a way out to only need one copy thats a cool premise.
I am looking forward to most of those as well.
I'm not lookinG for last of us 2 til 19..but who knows maybe they will blow us away at e3 with it being closer than revealed and say it'll be out soon. I could see them holding that one close and dropping it as soon as one of the other guys does something biG.
The big one there of course that sadly we will be waiting awhile for is cp2077 :/ they are still hiring on that project. We may be lucky to have that in 2019..but I question the holy prophets CDPR not...they will bless us the chosen when it's ready.
Yeah, I fear a 2019 release, but oh well, as long as it's amazing, I'll wait. Too much to play and too little time/money anyway. 2018 looks to be way better than 2017 for PS4 (IMO) if most of these games pan out.
they will have to be really good, ive got 2017 in my top 3 years of gaming all time. to beat persona 5, my number one jrpg ever and number 2 game of all time, nier automata, horizon, tales of berseria was underappreciated, a lot of people liked nioh,..
2015 2017 1997
but as I think about ps4 has some potential juggernauts next year, god of war, ace combat 7, kingdom come deliverance, spider man, valkyria 4, ni no kuni 2, dragon quest 11, cold steel, far cry 5, RDR2, some of those are multiplats ya, but for the system it could indeed be a huge year, it could top 2017 overall if these are what they should be, even if I don't end up liking any single game more than p5.
Ori is probably what I'm most looking forward to because of how good Ori 1 was. Who knows how long the dev time will be though because this is the same studio that delayed their game an entire year just to refine the controls, so....
I was hoping this was going to be a game more inline with the sid meiers pirates type of game but I'm still hopeful. Just not as much as I once was. I rated it among my most anticipated but also the most likely to disappoint me, maybe not because it's bad but because it's not the pirate game I have been waiting on for a long time. I think with the right people actually trying to do it right it will be fun, but it doesn't seem like the kind of thing that will draw good luck with randoms
Not sure if it's been mentioned but I'm hoping to email jam and earl back in the groove is actually released and not abandoned.
Got picked up by adult networks I think(?) and was supposed to be relearned of 2017 but got pushed TiVo an unspecified 2018 date. Seems like an improved version of the first one which was easily the best.
alright reopening... we have already seen two good ones in monster hunter world and dbz fighterz... did they live up for you?
the first game from my initial list hits in two weeks, kingdom come deliverance. so we'll see .....
looks like so far my prediction of RDR2 slipping happened, but I said only a little, and its more than that. the CP2077 twitter did come alive again ,but not much more. and Nintendo made some announcements but seem to be waiting to make the really big ones, I think E3 could be huge this year, harkening back to the years when every company really blew the roof off.
I agree about E3 being huge this year. I think both Sony and Nintendo will have really impressive showings and i'm cautiously optimistic about what Microsoft will show. If they can acquire one of these big publishers then it completely changes the landscape. And if Bethesda has another conference maybe we'll see the new Elder Scrolls? Or a new Doom? Or maybe something completely unexpected.
I'm still thinking starfield for Bethesda..it's been awhile since fallout 4 it may be time for them to show something big..but they keep saying a couple other big projects have to finish before we get es6.. could those have been eso Morrowind and starfield? Evil within and wolf/doom are smaller in comparison to their huge outings.
If Microsoft acquires a big player it will definitely change things..the rumored EA aquisition would be beyond huge. That gets you so many things..and if they chose to make them exclusive...wow.
ya bethesda's spin on a mass effect style game, im def interested.
there is a fan theory that its a big connected world, and that fallout is actually the past and elder scrolls the far far far future, but thats mostly because of a couple easter eggs more than any real proof ive seen, like a nirnroot in fallout.
so where are you on your predictions? anything come true, a game you were looking forward to let you down?
so far only one of my most anticipated games has released, Kingdom Come, while its what I expected, it hasn't quite lived up. ive put it down til a few patches hit. parts of the game are not fun at all, but they have been supporting the game hard and have already patched a few things
sea of thieves I predicted to disappoint me, I missed the beta but good things are being said, and I guess we will find out soon!
some of my predictions have updates
-Cyberpunk 2077 gets some new info revealed but still no real trailer, indicating that the game is 2020 at best, and cdpr's last game on current gen consoles before shifting to what comes next. - they have booked time at E3, so this looks to happen.
-Red dead redemption 2 slips again, but only a little. - it slipped half a year so missed this one a little.
-mainline fire emblem for switch revealed - at todays direct? ive heard rumors.
-ports of games from the last year or two to the switch, LOTS of them. indies and AAA's alike. - we did get LA noire and looks like diablo 3 is gonna be announced today
Recent pleasant surprise for me was Splinter Cell Conviction coming to X1 BC. I always wanted to play it and never did, and watched the steady stream of BC releases specifically looking for this one title to be named. I was floored when that happened! It's quite good and a total steal for a few bucks on ebay.
> Right now these 2 are all I care about: God of War (fingers crossed for March) and
> the Shadow of the Colossus remake (Feb).
> I also expect Spider-man to be outstanding...and that looked pretty solid so I expect
> it out maybe in the summer?
Colossus was great, totally in-line with my expectations.
God of War seems legit to finally release 4/20. I really can't wait for that one.
Still no real word on Spider-man so I'm guessing it'll make an appearance at E3 and then release in time for the holidays? Sure seems like it's been in-progress for long enough.
so spiderman September 7th, with dragon quest 11 right on top of it, and spyro right behind that. E3 is starting to loom over us, I still think my prediction that its huge this year will pan out, I am excited for it.
looks like my smash switch prediction hit, though that was far from a stretch. far cry 5 seems to be getting pretty solid reviews and im hearing a lot of good things, I think im gonna make it my next game after NNK2.
kinda fun to look back on this and see where we were only a few weeks and months ago and what we have learned since.
maybe it will show at the MS conference but the holy prophets have supposedly booked some of their own time at the show so maybe we will really get a big look at it! it will remain my #1 most anticipated until its release, they are the one company I trust the most to be sure.
> Well Apple has said nothing about a gaming console😐
> Right now Monster Hunter is surely on the shortlist for GotY. I new it was going
> to be great. I didn't know it was going to sell like gangbusters.
> What is DQXI release date officially
The Monster Hunter sales are insane. Capcom knocked it out of the park with RE7 last year (over 5 million sold) and they've done it again with Monster Hunter World. I think they've got their mojo back and i'm looking forward to seeing what the Resident Evil 2 remake looks like.
Oh and the date for DQ11 is September 4. 4 days before Spider-Man and a week after Yakuza Kiwami 2. The lineup for the second half of 2018 is already insane and we still don't know what Nintendo has planned.
i know im in the minority on monster hunter, i didnt really get into it, but with all the games we have coming this year i wouldnt be surprised to see it miss the goty list but im sure it will be there. competition will be stiff this year for sure.
i dont think we get anything on dragon age 4, its still so early they may not have much to show and they will be all about anthem, if anthem fails, we may not even get dragon age 4, bioware is in real trouble if anthem isnt successful EA may shut them down, they have no love for any form of history and apparently they paid 800million for it so they not be able find a buyer for them in their current state.... if it fails microsoft should swoop in and buy them, and then clean house of the ea people and make them a second party dev and let them go back to the days of when they made great games for og xbox like kotor and jade empire and into the next era with mass effect.
september is crazy insane and october and november may be just as much so once we get schedules at E3... my bank account hurts already
i agree, ive been calling this the new golden age of gaming. so much really good stuff, ive been doing a lot of emulation and stuff messing around with emulators and old stuff here and there as i find it interesting, and it makes you appreciate to a greater level than before what we have now and just how good it really is. this gen has yielded my top 2 games of all time, and ive been at this since 2600/NES. there are so many good games from the east and west, 3 very good consoles all with great experiences.
I think for a while people were fixated on the past especially people our age. I for a while was really stuck on my JRPGs being traditional and didn't care very much for alot of western games than I just decided hey it's time to take some time off, broaden my perspectives and I've found out I enjoy games a whole lot more now.
same, jrpgs will always be special but its good to take a break from any genre at times, after a couple long games or two i like to decompress with something like an assassins creed or something, which i mean arent short, but not 100 hour persona 5 type things
>> this gen has yielded my top 2 games of all time, and ive been at this since
The witcher 3.. so far and away the greatest of all time. Persona 5 behind that ..so far that the witcher can't see it. It's that good. If you'd told me a couple years ago that not one but two games would be able to dethrone ff7 I'd have never believed you
No game this gen has managed to come close to dethroning my two favorite games, those being Skies of Arcadia and Banjo Kazooie. Games have become more cinematic then they have in the past and the more that happens the less I've enjoyed them. I have played some amazing games this generation, but none that have been more satisfying and enjoyable as those I've played in the past.
The witcher def changed me on that.. that series is just so spectacular, 1 is nearly unplayable by modern standards and 2 is kinda clunky..but 3 is perfect in every way. It's not for everyone and not everyone feels that way but if youre on that side of the fence nothing may ever equal it. In so aware no matter what I watch..play..read..that it's inferior in some way to the experience of the witcher. The books are spectacular as well and I don't find much time to read these days but they are amazing.
i also expect to underwhelmed by RDR2, i like the first game but i dont find it as earth shattering as the masses seem to. i think i will like it just fine but i dont expect it make my top 5 for the year. there are other years that perhaps it could, but there is a lot coming this year that i am really excited about
maybe, im not saying it isnt very good, it is, in a year with DQ11, VC4, octopath, spiderman and soul calibur 6, now with 100% more witcher-ing, that it will be in my top 5 but we'll see, its a day one because my daughter loves rdr and she will be on it right away. i'll play with it when im helping her on a mission she cant pass or when its the weekends they go to their moms lol. ace combat 7 may yet be announced for this year too so thats another possible top 5 for me, so many of my fave series getting entries this year its gonna be hard to crack the top 5 for me, but i have been enjoying rockstar a lot more since they cleaned up the feel of the games more, i really like gta5 and feel like they have really got it down now, i want a vice city redone like 5.
we will get nothing from darksiders 3 and a game that is quietly on my radar in biomutant at E3, apparently THQ Nordic are big soccer fans and will be skipping E3 to stay in Austria and watch the world cup. they will be at gamescom and pax west though
thq nordic is definitely not what i consider an A lister for me, but it seems odd not to hit the biggest event in the industry when you have a couple of bigger games coming up instead of just the junk they usually throw around.
> maybe, im not saying it isnt very good, it is, in a year with DQ11, VC4, octopath,

Oh man, Vice City remade using the GTA 5 engine would be amazing!
All those games are high on my list as well. Not much of a SoulCalibur guy, but i'll be buying it just to play as Geralt! The three games i'm most curious about at the moment are Code Vein, Detroit: Become Human, and Vampyr. They all have the potential to be insanely good, but I wouldn't be shocked to see them end up with a Metacritic of like 70 or something, either.
On Ace Combat 7...Hopefully we hear something soon. November could be a good release window and I don't think it'll have much comp there. I've got a VR headset now and I'm so ready to check out some of those VR missions!
I kinda wish I made more predictions, but my predictions are looking good so far:
"As far as predictions go, I think Anthem gets pushed out of 2018. I also think we'll see what Retro Studios (new IP) and From Software (Bloodborne 2) are working on. I also think we'll see footage from Cyberpunk 2077 and all cry tears of joy!"
I think there's a chance that i'll hit all of these. Anthem has been pushed so i can cross that one off. There are heavy rumors circulating about Retro's new game so i'm sure we'll see footage soon. From has already announced a new game and we might see footage at E3 (gonna give myself a point for this even though it's not Bloodborne 2). And i'm still hoping and praying for Cyberpunk 2077 footage. Cyberpunk 2077 and Ghost of Tsushima footage are pretty much my biggest wants at the moment.
CP2077 is pretty likely to show big, CDPR has booked some time, hard to believe they would be working on anything else to show but CP2077. Ghost does look good too.
im sure it wont be a prominent feature but im hoping somewhere the news comes that trails of cold steel 1 and 2 ps4 versions are coming to the US, ive been holding off getting them on steam as I want that the whole set on one platform if possible, and would prefer ps4.
update on a few from OP
-pokemon switch is huge - looks like this one will hit -smash switch announced - got this one, though it wasn't a stretch I guess. -kingdom hearts 3 actually releases - looks promising -FF7 remake dated for 2019, lots of new info and footage at E3 and throughout the year - iffy, though we may see chapter 1 next year -Bethesda finally reveals Starfield, but does not reveal ES6. - I still think this happens -Ubisoft and Ancel announce that Wild just wasn't working and focus is being moved to BG&E2 (I don't want that to happen, but no news about this game at all has me worried) - if we don't see anything from wild im thinking development hell with ancel being stretched too thin. -Dragon Age 4 revealed but is a ways off - I don't think bioware shows much if anything at this point, last I saw the team on this game was small, guess they will finish anthem and then shift people over. I still think if anthem flops EA closes bioware forever. -switch virtual console is revealed, and our Wii U VC purchases carry (hey I can dream lol) - RIP -no new consoles revealed - still think we are 2020/21 on new consoles, they've got to wait on the next round of chips and memory to make a significant leap. -will see Nintendo begin to have all its main teams focus on switch and 3ds continues to dwindle. - they've announced support for 3ds til at least 2020 but at what level? so I guess this is partially true maybe.
I was right on sea of thieves so far being the biggest letdown of what I was looking forward too, its not what I wanted in a pirate game, I want a new sid meiers pirates, probably never happen though :( KCD was a little disappointing, they needed more tuning on the console versions. ill go back to it on pc one day and ive heard its much better there as everything was designed around mouse like lockpicking etc.. its impossible on controller.
I guess the company who was contracted to work on FF7 Remake was fired from the job and Square had to take over and scrap everything the other company had done and restart from nothing, which is why there has been zero info or screenshot in forever. I would be surprised to see this game, or any of its episodes, get released this generation at all. If they do, then it will probably be a rush job. I'm hoping Square goes back and makes it turn based like the OG FF7 and gets rid of that stupid looking battle system they were going to be using.
Also, Shenmue 3 was delayed until next year as was what look to be Borderlands 3 (2K said "one of their big franchise gets is delayed until next year that was supposed to be released this year", making people think its BL3 since they also confirmed its not going to be at E3).
I agree wholeheartedly about FF7, apparently they lost the two years that the other company had, and retained some assets and stuff but most of it had to be junked, so there maybe some art and other things they don't have to do, but I never understood why they would contract that in the first place, that is your biggest property. for years they said they cant do it until it could just blow away expectations or it would be seen as a failure, so why would you chance that with anything but your best? I don't know why its so hard to understand that all fans really want is the same game with 15 level graphics, good voices and translation fixes. that would sell ridiculously well and they would make millions. maybe tens of millions. I wont be surprised to see it on ps5 at all though. I don't want it all if its not right so if they need to take their time and start over then im fine with that.
Shenmue 3 is another that if it isn't right they need to just delay it, at this point fans never thought they would get it anyway so I think most would agree let them get it right.
BL3 is a curious one, its being talked about as a delay but that's a weird way to refer to it as it actually hasn't been announced with a date or window? but I guess its delaying the big reveal. I think that's another they know they have to get right after a lot of people didn't like pre-sequel as much as 2.
I think the delay with BL3 was more of something from an internal perspective as they were gearing up to reveal it at e3 then launch it later this year but they delayed all that stuff internally so they could work on the game more. BL is one of my favorite franchises so I don't really mind the "delay" since this is the type of game that if done right could be a huge letdown seeing as how good BL2 was. From the sounds of it though they've been putting a ton of time into it, so I have a lot of hopes that we get a game that is as big "current gen" leap from BL2.
And FF7....LOl. I don't know what Square is thinking with that game. Just a current gen remaster would have been fantastic, instead they had to reimagine one of the most iconic games of all time. The game doesn't need to be reimagined, it was good just the way it was, just dated AF.
right.. a little update to the game and it would be just fine. they don't have to reinvent the wheel with it, I get the need to appeal to your modern fanbase too, but the core audience will be old fans.
The core audience were the ones asking for the remake, the new crowd of gamers who don't like turn based games don't really seem to like FF7 to begin with, so the need to cater to them while alienating the fans who've been asking for the remake just seemed like a huge swing and a miss from Square. I wonder if they'll release this new game on the Switch as well or if they're going to go full console power and make it compatible with the weaker hardware. Seems like the development cost on this game may be kind of high seeing as how that other company wasted some already.
ya two years worth even if that number was accurate. im expecting full console power.. they've always said they cant do it til they could just blow expectations away, so I guess we'll see about a switch version.. but everyone seemed to really want it even at the level of that ps3 tech demo and that would be doable.
If it ends up slipping to ps5 will there be a new Nintendo by then? ive seen things that have said they aren't looking for an 8-10 year life cycle for switch, but if its stays successful maybe they do keep it around longer.
Nintendo was saying a 5-6 year life cycle for the Switch, so probably nothing until 2023-2024. If it keeps selling at this rate then I don't think we'll see anything anytime sooner. The biggest issue could be when the PS5 and X1 come out and 3rd parties having more issues making ports on it since at that point the power gap would be too big. Still though, the Switch in Japan is huge, I think last week it was 60% of all consoles sold, home and portable combined, so I think that Japanese companies are really looking to get their games on that thing as much as possible.
ya they definitely are. the ff7 remake could end up being one of those that hits at the right time to be current and next gen.
CDPR has said CP2077 is being made to scale with hardware as well, it seems far enough away it could possibly see a next gen release too depending on how the next couple of years go for that game, I don't think we see it til 20, they are still hiring people to work on it, though they may blow us away at e3 and are only hiring for the back half of the game to finish everything out.
Not too sure if dev kits have gone out yet though, and if they have then how far back these devs got them because CDPR has been working on CP2077 for a long time now. I would guess a release for next year around spring or summer, that way it still lands this gen.
I'll be surprised if cp2077 comes that soon, just this year they were still hiring designers.. but maybe. I'm ready for it when it's ready I'll be all about it. Hoping it drops when I can take a couple days off work and just play it like crazy.
There was a rumor about pa5 dev kits but I've been seeing that it was false. Cdpr had just said they were designing it to scale with hardwre so as people got better PCs it would grow with them.
A funding application to the Polish government which was used to secure a $7 million grant stated a possible release date of 2019 so we'll see. Maybe late 2019 with a possible slip to early-mid 2020 but I also don't expect a new console until late 2020 earliest.
ive been picking e3 2020 for a console reveal from one or the other, a recent digital foundry video speculated 2021, as there is some new memory and chip stuff coming out next year they would likely use, and then they would need it to come down to a price they could offer it in a console.
MS currently has job listings out for someone to lead a team with the implementation of GDDR6 RAM in something they're making. My guess is that is what will be in the next Xbox. The processor will also probably be Ryzen based which probably has to mature a bit before consoles jump in and start using it.
that's what digital foundry was talking about too, they will surely both go to GDDR6 and likely use amd ryzen, which needs another year or two to get where they need to be. I don't want any new console til it can be a big leap over what we have. massive hard drives, 4k/60fps standard in all games and all that, but I also don't want them to cost more than 500, and I think they know that's the upper limit, so until they can give us DDR6 and a more mature ryzen for 400-500 we may not see anything
MS's hardware labs is currently gearing up for something too.
GDDR6 will probably be to push higher textures, the GDDR5 the X has now can do 4k textures just fine but the weaker processors seem to be the biggest issue. The HDD definitely needs to be huge, like 5tb standard or infinite cloud storage because if our games are 100gb now for 4k games then next gen's 4k games will probably be 150GB and that will eat a HDD very fast.
I think it will be a a mistake if "XB2" focuses too heavily on more power, also. Don't get me wrong, it's great for many of us, but clearly, based on sales, that's not how you get the job done. People want simplicity, accessabiliry, and a quality library. Switch and PS4 are both prime examples of that. Unless of course, MS just sees its future is as a niche for hardcore gamers/visual junkies who care more about the way a game looks and runs graphically, etc. more than anything else. If that's the case, I think they that's actually not a bad idea. I don't think they're going to touch the PS/eventual Switch market shares at this point, so they might as well appeal to that demographic.
Xbox will probably come out beefy AF because they're not going to want another 3 years of "lol 720p suxs and your console suxs. 1080p or GTFO". the X1 was branded as an under powered console from the get-go and it was a contributing factor in its negative image out of the gates. 1st impressions are very important with consoles, and if during your reveal trailer you put out gameplay videos of amazing looking games, then that's whats going to get you the most people interested.
I think Don Mattrick was a big part of the reason the X1 failed out of the gate. Had Phil Spencer been in charge from the start things would have been much better. The whole used game fiasco with Sony coming out right after and saying that there would be no restrictions on used games killed them before anyone had sold a single console that gen.
Yeah, it was definitely those dumb things that Don Mattrick did in the beginning of the gen that completely turned most away from the X1. No used games, always online, no BC, more expensive, focused too much on entertainment during its reveal, and not as powerful. X1 had the better 1st year library and maybe even possibly into year 2, but the negatives outweighed a handful of better games for the average consumer. It allowed for Sony to build a huge fanbase that was really pretty much impossible to get back at that point. Spencer has done a lot to reverse course that DM set 4 years ago and has done a pretty good job of it so far. I'm hoping that they resurrect some old IPs at e3 this year, that would be awesome to see some classic games like Battle Toads, Banjo Kazooie, Mech Assault, or Fable getting new life.
> I am hoping we see at least something from the new fable title that I think its the
> forza horizon team working on? could be interesting.
Yeah, Playground Games is supposed to be the studio making the game and they just beefed up their staff considerably to take on this project. MS wanted a team who has experience with open world games and a history of high quality to take this project on. Its supposed to be a "reboot" of the series since the original assets were taken off the table after Lionhead closed, whatever that means, but they're also reported to be using the X1X as the lead platform then scaling down the engine to work well on the X1 rather than the other way around like what has been common place so far. I've been playing through Fable Anniversary lately for the first time and find it fun but also very restrictive because of the hardware limitations of the time. A new Fable has the potential to be a game that fills a void in the X1's library.
yes very much so, X1 needs a huge rpg but not just for the sake of it, it needs a really good one, and something like a new fable without the hardware restrictions of the og xbox could be huge. I remember how ambitious that game was supposed to be and all the ideas it had that just couldn't be realized. it was very fun at the time though I played it at launch and current hardware they could get a lot closer to that original idea
I think they've just been working on a bunch of little mobile games called Terra Wars and Terra Battle. Huge waste of such a talented developer. I think their last console game was The Last Story for the Wii.
I just looked into this history of them a bit and it looks like they only have 15 employees. A company called "feelplus" was created by MS specifically to assist with the development with Lost Odyssey. Feelplus and Artoon (who helped with Blue Dragon) were absorbed into AQ Interactive who then later merged with Marvelous Entertainment. If they do create another BD or LO then MS will probably have to set up another studio to assist Mistwalker because 15 employees isn't quite enough to take on either one of those games.
I bought the DLC but never got around to playing it. Supposed to have a crazy difficult end game boss which requires your entire team to be fully leveled in order to beat. I need to get around to doing that one of these days.
just 4 days til the conferences begin!! a lot of predictions will possibly be fulfilled!
Vampyr releases today, im hearing that reviews are mixed and those that love it really love it and those that don't like it really hate and slam the combat system pretty hard. i had this down as the one among my most anticipated games that have the most potential to let me down, so we will soon see. its been delivered but sadly i'll likely not have time to play today.
Detroit become human wasn't in my top few, though i did think it was going to be interesting, and now its likely to be my "game i expected to enjoy more or less but ended up being great" for the year.
Yeah... DBH was just sort of a "maybe I'll enjoy this" type of purchase and I freaking love it. I'm so glad I got it and can't wait to dive back into it again. I'm also waiting for Vampyr to arrive. I loved the setting and idea of it. I probably won't have time to play anything until the weekend though.
im in the minority in that i didn't love dontnod's life is strange games, but this really seems to be a big departure from that. i love the premise and the idea of how drastically you can affect things with your choices is always something im into. every review loathes the combat, so im hoping that isn't too heavy a focus if its not good. some are definitely praising the immersion and npc interactions and quests, so i guess we'll see.
same, im in the middle of yakuza 0 and love yakuza, never had played the series but wow ive been missing out, played kiwami and went straight into 0 because I had to have more, i'll finish it and then be on octopath.
I have to wrap up Shadow Complex which I'll probably do by Saturday so I should have some time to start it up this weekend. The 1.5hrs a day I have to play games isn't even close to enough to get around to all the games I have waiting around to be played.
ya I hear you. on the weekends I usually have some time, and during the week here in the summer more than usual in the evening depending, but during the school year its usually just weekends and a few hours on Wednesday night.
I may get a couple hours of yakuza tonight, but the kids will be with their mom this weekend so I plan to spend all of it on the couch finishing yakuza and starting octopath, but im only in chapter 5, maybe 6 I think, and I have to work til noon Saturday.
I could have more time to play, I just don't like playing after 6pm. I go to bed at 8:30pm and if I play games close to bed time then my mind is wired and its harder to sleep. Weekends though I'm up playing games by 4am when its nice and quiet and its awesome. That's my favorite time to game.
I used to stay up late and game but its harder now that im a little older lol, a couple weekends ago I stayed up til like 2 and felt like I was gonna die all the next day. I usually go to bed between 11-12, which is too late for getting up at 5, but that's just usually how it happens.
