Which of these Nintendo franchises do you consider to be the best overall?

Zelda positive
Mario negative

I only got the idea for this topic after seeing that I could use positive to represent Zelda and negative to represent Mario lol. I'm talking about the main series in each (so action-adventure Zelda games vs. Mario platformers).

Here are the Wikipedia entries that show the main games I'm referring to:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zeld...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario

So pretty even, in terms of overall output.

Feel free to post which franchise you voted for. (Mario is running away with it so far.) Optionally, list your 3 favorite games from each series if you'd like. (I'm sure most have already done that in the past, but maybe your top 3 has changed with the release of BotW and Odyssey last year). Here are mine:

1. Breath of the Wild
2. Majora's Mask
3. Ocarina of Time

1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Super Mario World
3. Super Mario Odyssey

I've played all of those games listed on Wikipedia above (except Super Mario Run), so I really am a big fan of both.

Tough. The top Zelda games are the best of any series, but there are so many great Mario games.

1. BotW
2. OoT
3. LttP

1. SMB 2
2. SM W
3. SMB 3

Ultimately voted Mario. So many Zelda games I have no desire to go back and play is what ultimately swung the vote.

They're both amazing and in my mind equal in awesomeness, but if I HAD to choose one I thought was better I would choose Zelda.

Top 3 Zelda:

1: Ocarina of Time
2. Breath of the Wild
3. Wind Waker

Top 3 Mario:

1. Super Mario 64
2. Super Mario Odyssey
3. Super Mario Sunshine

Zelda without a doubt. As much as I love Mario games, a new Zelda game is a g*d d*mn event in my house.

Top 3 Zelda:
1. Ocarina of Time
2. Breath of the Wild
3. Link to the Past

Top 3 Mario:
1. Super Mario World
2. Super Mario 3D World
3. New Super Mario Bros U

(I voted Zelda, for the same reason as bonham2.)

Mario never sunk as low as Skyward Sword in a mainline game, so Mario. Pretty much every Mario game is amazing in some way.

...but, for what it's worth, my vote still goes to the Mario franchise; I'm just going in knowing full well the "sins of the plumber." frown

That's not a mainline Mario game, so his point stands lol. Skyward Sword might be the low point for me as well. I would normally say Spirit Tracks, but I am recently getting the urge to play that one again.

Do tell, then; what exactly is a "mainline Mario" video game?

The games developed by Nintendo. Hotel Mario is in the same camp as those CD-i Zelda games.

Bottom 3 each?

Super Mario Land
NSMB (DS)
Super Mario Bros Dx (bad port)

Adventures of Link
Spirit Tracks
Phantom Hourglass

I'm not counting none mainline releases like Super Mario Run or Four Swords. I'm real close to putting up Majora's Mask instead of Phantom Hourglass. The Lost Levels would take Dx's place if we don't count ports.

Bottom 3:

Phantom Hourglass
Skyward Sword
Spirit Tracks

Super Mario Land
NSMB 2
Lost Levels

I enjoyed all of those games, btw. When it comes to Mario and Zelda, I'm not hard to please. Those are my least favorite Zelda games because of the forced touch and motion controls. Those Mario games are simply the ones I'm least likely to play again.

Mario running off with it again!...I was just curious to see which one more people would choose. Pokemon is right up there with Mario in terms of sales, but doesn't seem to have the same reputation as Zelda or Mario. (Or Metroid, to a lesser extent. That's mostly just Prime and Super Metroid, I think.)

Mario had the higher highs with Mario 3, World, and 64, but I think I like Zelda more overall.

1. BotW
2. OOt
3. WW

1. World
2. M64
3. Mario 3.

Zelda 2 is one of my favorite NES games. I absolutely despise the DS Zelda games. Skyward Sword is decent, but I certainly understand the hate.

Absolutely! People knock on this one too much! The overworld is weird, some of the caves are too hard, but the dungeons are just flat out MASTERPIECES, and the music is some of the best the series has to offer.

mario for me, there is just something nostalgic and special about some super mario world or mario 3, but that's probably a lot of childhood memory factor too, as I have so many involving the little Italian plumber.

Never been into the mainline Mario games so this is an easy choice for me. I'd probably put my top 3 Zelda games ahead of my top 3 games from any franchise not named Resident Evil or Final Fantasy.

1. Breath of the Wild
2. Majora's Mask
3. The Wind Waker

Childhood memories are the reason those are my favorite Mario games as well - I haven't played either of them since... @Heavyd814life, nice to see another GTZer who ranks Majora's Mask as highly as I do.

13-14...this has been very close. (Mario knocked out Link with an uppercut in that video I posted earlier, for those who didn't watch it. Lol)

ya, playing with my bigger cousins when I was too little to effectively use the controller, when we finally got a Nintendo of our own and playing for a few mins in the morning before school, how amazing Mario world seemed when snes was the new thing. seeing Mario 3 in the wizard, the new years eve my at the time love interest and I played through New smb.. the memories are there to go with Mario for me.

If I went solely with the 2D games, I'd go Zelda in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, that's only half of it. Mario made the jump to 3D well. Zelda, well... in my opinion, didn't. All of the charm and love I had for Zelda was dead in OoT. It was too easy, and things were not well hidden. So I have to give the total nod to Mario.

I don't know, those Skulltula things weren't easy to find. I got all 120 stars on Mario twice but could never get those stupid spiders in Zelda even with a guide.

I never opened a guide while playing it, and I think I finished the game with 93 of them? The handful I didn't get were the only things in the game I missed.

The starts in Mario were considerably easier to get than Skulltulas were though, and some of those last ones were brutal because some only appeared during certain times of the day cycles.

Zelda II positive

Or

Super Mario Bros. 2 negative

Battle of the oddballs

I've beaten most of the main series Mario games. Off the top of my head, I think Sunshine may be the only one I haven't. And the Yoshi's Island games if you count those.

For Zelda, I have beaten the original, adventure of link, ocarina of time, four swords adventure, maybe Minish Cap (I don't remember), and Breath of the Wild. I lost interest in the others before the end. Not to the point where I didn't want to finish them, but to the point that some other game distracted me from it, then another game, then another, and I never got back to them.

So Mario wins for me. Even though I like the idea of them, they just don't keep me fixated for the long haul the way a Mario game does.

lol, not even close to me. Top 3 Mario versus least favorite Zelda. Zelda II is not a Zelda game, completely different in almost everyway (in a bad way imo). At least Mario 2 is still a platformer that looks and feels like Mario.

Doesn't bother me that people like it though.
It's not terribly done, and is on par with other NES games in terms of "Nintendo polish". Just none of the new game elements in it appealed to me.

Zelda 2 very easily could've been a non Zelda game, and we all know SMB2 actually wasn't a Mario game originally. They both added a ton of new characters and mechanics that added to their respective franchise. For me though, Zelda 2 is in my top 5 NES games, so this is an easy one.

Zelda 2 for me. I never really cared for Mario 2 very much. It was okay, but probably the weakest Mario game in the main series.

I think my biggest problem with Zelda 2 was it felt like you were playing a crossover of Dragon Warrior and Rambo, neither of which I enjoyed.

Zelda II is my favorite NES game (played it very recently, in fact), but I really liked Mario 2 when I was a kid (despite it not originally being a Mario game, as bonham2 said). Heck, I'm sure that I could still play it today. I liked playing as Peach and I really liked that DS game she starred in too, lol.

Link to the Past for me. Both are great, but I burnt myself out on World as a kid. Also LttP felt epic at the time, a true leap forward in the franchise. World was a notch above the excellent 3. (Mario 3 set the bar high, Zelda II set it low.. lol)

lol.. Honestly it had a lot of potential, but then you parachute into the jungle to fight the Vietnamese/Russians to free POW's like a badass bugs, bats and other animals with your knife. (Eventually you fight people and get weapons)

If you play, use save states, otherwise I probably have a spare cart. The passwords are a dog.
