Recent news: according to Kotaku, Gamestop is no longer taking preorders for the system. Hope you got your preorder in!

Days Gone is awesome. I ended up dropping everything else I was playing to play it.

I keep seeing people saying that Days Gone is getting bad reviews, but it's average rating is a 7/10. That's more like decent than bad, right?

It was getting slammed at first. User score on metacritic is at 80.

So far I'm really enjoying it.

Gotcha. Even if its critics score is 7/10 on average now.

Ya it looks like it's moved up. I think people get mad when PS exclusive game aren't hailed as the second coming, because if you look at recent games like Spiderman, GoW, and others like HZD, Uncharted etc, they're all critically acclaimed. It goes to show how high the bar has been set for PS exclusives.

I think 7 out of 10 is acceptable. Unfortunately it's at a 72 on Metacritic now, which puts it in the "yellow" category and I think people have been trained to feel that it needs to be "green" (75 or higher) to be worth their time.

I usually skip the "critic" reviews altogether and use the user scores to get a feel, was pretty sure almost everyone did this. That's sitting green at 80 so I wonder if others are concerned about the yellow critics.

Critics loved RDR and most players did too. I found it pretty bland and boring. Got half way through and realized it probably wouldn't get any better (I played Mass Effect to the end thinking it'd get better, it did not.) which is why I stopped.

I don't usually check user ratings on Metacritic because I don't put much stock in them. It's not too uncommon to see people that stick a 0 or a 10 score followed up by only 1 sentence to explain why. Most times if I check Metacritic it's just because I wanna see what the overall critic score for a game is and that's it. But when it comes to me looking for reviews to decide if I want to purchase a game I will check specific reviewers on YouTube before I check anywhere else. I want the person reviewing the game to be out of $60 if the game sucks, just like I would have been. So anyone who gets a game for free from the publisher I usually don't trust their opinion as much.

Yeah, i got bored with RDR as well. I had to force myself to finish the story.

What was your GOTY for 2018?

100%ed the full game and DLC for Spider-man PS4 - just wanted all the suits really. The only thing I didn't do was max out all the gadgets (meaning I didn't get 3 tokens during every challenge), and I didn't collect all the bugle newspapers. Otherwise I plowed through the last of the missions I had to do and started NG+.

Spider-man and RDR2 are within centimeters for my favorite game of 2018. I can't choose between either.

I can't say I even played a lot of games in 2018 that came out in 2018. God of War and Far Cry 5 were the only games that came out in 2018 that I played in 2018. So I'd say God of War.

I honestly did not like RDR2. I can't pinpoint exactly what the issue was. Maybe the wild west era just isn't my thing but I could not get into it. I tried to love it for about 15-16 hours and eventually just had to move on.

But in other news I also just got the platinum for Spider-Man. Which means the last 3 games I've completed (Spider-Man, God of War, and Persona 5) have been absolute pleasures to play through. Never felt burnt out on these at any point. The shear beauty of swinging around the city in Spider-Man was awesome. Reminded me of the feeling of when I played through the first InFamous years ago. Beautiful nostalgia.

strange to see such division for rdr 2, if i made my top 20 ever it'd probably make top 10 easily. but not everyone likes everything. i dont care for resident evil (or any game with tank control) or old zelda games and a lot of people cant beleive that.

I do think the old west setting is an acquired taste for lots of folks. Took me a long while to get really into it. Shane and The Hateful Eight helped that along nicely.

I liked Zelda BOTW, but it definitely wasn't my GOTY when it was released. It was good, i just didn't think it was completely badass, like others. I enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn much more.

It's slow. It devolves into its true form faster than GTA5 does. It's slow. It doesn't reward or support thinking outside the box, it's super hand-holdy. It's slow. It's boring. Probably because of the part where it's slow. But it's okay, not everyone likes good games. Some people like Horizon. Hah!

Mine was Spider-Man. Detroit: Become Human was my second favorite. There was also Octopath Traveler, Monster Hunter World, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. According to Metacritic, there were over 25 games with a 9/10 or better rating in 2018.

Regardless, great choice though. I loved that game. It's probably my third favorite of the year.

Detroit was my GOTY, but God of War and Spider-Man were up there for sure. I think God of War was 3rd on my list and Spider-Man was 5th.

I am having a love affair with Assassin's Creed Odyssey. 25 hours in and I just arrived in Athens. This game is all I can think about at the moment. My copy of A Plague Tale: Innocence just arrived and as much as I'm looking forward to playing it, it's definitely going on the back burner until I'm done with Odyssey.

Odyssey got a lot of crap for a lot of reasons. Some justified. But I also really enjoyed it. Its a fun game. I'm waiting for the current DLC story arc to fully come out (episodic) to play the DLC.

I loved Odyssey, especially since I got into it after they fixed some of the grindy stuff. But after 70hrs I did get bored. There's simply TOO much to the game for me. But it was still phenomenal. I played as the girl and felt like Xena warrior princess running around fudging up Greece. I might get back to it eventually and finish up some stuff after I get through some other things first. I think I just needed a break from it.

It's why I did play through RDR when I normally don't touch GTA games. Functionally, they are basically the same game but GTA's setting doesn't appeal to me.

Octopath would be the choice tor me. One of the best RPGs for gameplay that I had played in awhile.

It looked pretty great to me in handheld mode. I would say that was at least 90% of my playtime on it. I tried it a couple times docked and didn't care. In contrast I did prefer Mario Odyssey docked.
