A few questions about FE3H:

If you've never played a FE game before, can you just dive into this one? Are they connected at all or what's up?

These "routes" are they the exact same story in 3 ways?

looks like its going to be a set of content accessible in any of the three routes, new area of the monastery to explore and 4 new characters. the ashen wolves arent public knowledge apparently so we get to find out why.

yes you can play this one. its not connected to any of the other ones. some of the games are connected, and some take place in the same worlds but many years apart. some have easter eggs and throwbacks, some of the names in three houses are mashups of old names and some of the countries are named for old characters like Brigid. Three Houses is super beginner friendly to the series as well, its easy and they made it very beginner accessible to break it to a wider audience. its amazingly well done, the characters are top notch, the japanese and english voice actors are super, the music is awesome, and its a fun experience. the future is definitely bright for the series.

FE 3 is a sequel to FE 1, FE2 takes place in that world but in a different country. FE 5 takes place in the middle of FE4 and are the first two games in the overall timeline of Arachnea, one of the worlds in which alot of these take place. rumor is they will be the next remakes, they have been remaking them in order so far. FE13(awakening) takes place in that world but in the future, Chrom is a decendant of Marth from FE1 and 3, and one of the antagonist is a decendant of Alm from 2/15. FE 7 is a prequel to FE6 and shares characters. FE8 is pretty much its own thing. FE9 and 10 go together and takes place in a different setting than the others. FE 11(shadow dragon) is a remake of 1. FE12 is a remake of 3 and was in japan only. FE14(fates) is its own. FE15 (echoes: shadows of valentia) is a remake of 2. FE16 is three houses. FE17 is rumored to be a remake of FE4 but we'll see, it hasnt been announced.

the only thing you definitely dont want to play without playing its predecessor is 3/12,10, or 5

also of note is that FE1-6 never came to the US, but the remakes of 1 and 2 did. the remake of 1 didnt do well so the remake of 3 didnt come here, but you can play patched rom with a DS emulator. thats also neccessary if you want to play 4, 5 and 6. the GBA game we got in the US as "fire emblem" is FE7. as before its rumored FE4 is getting the remake treatment next, which i am really hoping it does, and hoping they include 5 in the package since it takes place in the middle of that story.

> These "routes" are they the exact same story in 3 ways?

yes, everything takes place in the country of Fodlan, the routes follow the lord of each of these three countries. some events will be the same, but each give you different parts of the story and fill in blanks the others dont tell you. Black Eagles has a split in it that creates a 4th route.

Wow thanks for the rundown.

The only game I have played like that where i was actually willing to "replay" for a different aspect of the story is Nier Automata because, well it's fudging awesome and it expands on the story etc. I am wondering if this is anything like that?

I've never played any other variation of FE except 3H and thought it was an amazing game. I didn't feel like I couldn't relate to the story, and tbh had there been reference to other games I didn't even know it.

ya there are a lot of callbacks to FE4 like the story having a timeskip, the "flame emperor" is also what Arvis is called in FE4. but the references arent something that take away from the game if you didnt know them.

and ya...like for instance blue lions is going to fill lots of information about things that the other two dont, golden deer expands into the past lore (recommend saving golden deer for last), black eagles then shows you even a different side (black eagles for life) and then the split route puts you on a route similar to golden deer with some slight differences. the lord of each of the countries involved are all interesting and Byleth's (you) allegience and who he/she sides with can affect the outcome.

all the houses have great characters, the characters are really well done and are relatable and awesome. you can recruit most of the characters to any of the houses but you'll never be able to use them all in one play, there arent nearly as many as some fire emblems but usually some of them in the games with really large casts are uninteresting and not great units anyway, so a tighter cast allowed them to really give them personality and flesh them out. getting to know all the characters across each route was great too. there are some characters i always recruited and used regadless of which house i played because they are either good or the paralog chapters require you to have certain characters to unlock them and they are some of the best parts of the game and usually give the best rewards.

Oof, had to stop watching the Smash direct... snooze. Any source have a summary? Another FE character was a letdown. I'd rather Cuphead been the character rather than a costume. Hand drawn sprite would have been cool in smash.

I want to give Three Houses a try because I enjoy RPGs and that one seems to have a unique premise but I'm very apprehensive to anime-leaning graphics for some reason. No idea why, I don't mind anime overall even if I haven't seen much, but games with anime-style character graphics just look like a dime a dozen... not overly visually appealing and done to no end.

Is the game good enough that it'll crack through my anime graphic bias or what?

Lame. I honestly don't think many of the paid DLC characters should be Nintendo properties. It's disappointing that the last one was.

It's one of the best games on Switch. I've played 3 out of 4 routes and I'll still probably go back to it for route 4 and 5. That's how good it is.

I haven't played it, but as someone who can't stand anime style graphics I'd play it. I'll never play Code Vein because that's just anime to the 1,000% level. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is another one way too anime looking for me. Also, I hear FE3H has some Persona like elements which sounds neat. a lot of SRPGs lack anything other than battle.

Am I misremembering, or didn't Sakurai say early on all the DLC characters would be 3rd party?

its probably something they had been working on and planning for awhile when the game had its early success. its definitely launched fire emblem to the next level and im sure they are hoping to keep the hype going and continue to grow the series i hope.

Sakurai stated before that Nintendo selected all the characters in advance and he just lets them know if the character can work with the game

The comments I've read have been so ridiculous. On one Facebook post, one of the top-voted comments was basically "I'm not even going to bother with the 2nd pack, guarantee it will be 6 Fire Emblem characters." Perfectly rational reaction to 1 Fire Emblem DLC character!

Still no where near as bad as Sean Murray getting death threats because No Man's Sky got delayed. Or a lady at Crystal Dynamics getting rape threats because Rise of the Tomb Raider was going to be an X1 timed exclusive. Theres always an extremely loud toxic part of the fan base that spends more time complaining online then playing games.

I wonder what the reaction would have been if Edelgard had been the 5th DLC character. I don't react because I haven't bought any of them. I only play Smash sparingly and couldn't see myself paying $25 for a few extra characters that I wouldn't even use. If I bought any, it would probably just be Hero from DQ.

This is why Nintendo won't release another Mario Kart this gen.

That game is 6 years old (3 years old on Switch), and that doesn't even include digital sales (despite what it says).

You're absolutely right, and why they may not make as much money overall, they also don't require constant upkeep, and they have less competition.

Devs need to realize they don't need to choose. There's still room for AAA single-player experiences, and they can make a ton of money off of them.

Some guy at EAs head must be exploding from the thought of no MTX in such a successful game.

I definitely think we'll see MK9 on the Switch, but after looking at this, maybe not as soon as I'd hoped.

It's a damn shame too. I'm not saying that because it's a bad game, but it's kinda worn out now. Hopefully the people still buying it are doing it because they skipped Wii U, but for those who didn't we're basically playing the same game since 2014.

Ideally I'd like Mario Kart to get the SSBU treatment at the end of Switch's life, and get a release that includes all characters and tracks the series ever had. Then a year or two into whatever the next console is, try something different with the series (I know to a lot of gamers "different = scary", but I'm not saying scrap everything and come up with something entirely new).

It makes a lot more sense to focus on dlc, Odyssey 2, Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4, DKC Switch, etc. I'm not saying it definitely won't happen. I'm just saying Nintendo has no reason to start production on it when it's predecessor is still in the top-10 (probably top-7 or 8). With the development cycle for games these days, it will be a very late release, I'd say, if it released at all.

Mario Kart seems to me a game that could just be updated every couple of months with new tracks and maybe a character or two. Then once a year introduce another feature. If the expectation set up front is "hey guys, we will not make a net new game for another 4 years" I wouldn't mind paying for add ons

I'm not really sure what else they could try, but I'm open to new ideas. Turning it into more of a Nintendo Kart would make sense at this point, since the franchise now has quite a few non-Mario characters. This opens the door not only to new characters, but new levels and new items.

It's not 'new', but I really wish they would bring back the unique Double Dash mechanics. Having 2 characters per kart that you could switch back and forth between was really cool. Plus, the funnest thing, unique items for different characters, like the giant banana peel or giant Bowser shell.

I just hope Ninty doesn't go the purely mobile only route for Mario Kart like that Tour nonsense. Not really a fan for what the big N is doing on the mobile front with their IP's. Just seems like money grubbing greed.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but Bloodstained had a new switch patch. And it actually fixes a ton of the performance issues. It's not perfect but it's a ton more playable now. They said this patch pretty much makes all the systems up to date and now they can work on bringing the free stuff now. Starting with the new playable character
