Welcome to The GameTZ Game Club! This is my attempt at forming an easy to get into book club type thing, but with games! Anybody and everybody is welcome to join in on the fun!

Rules:

- Each month a random game will be chosen, by myself, for the club to play. Games can vary from the beginning of gaming onward to current generation platforms. There's no limitations!

- You have from the 1st of every month to 11:59PM EST of the final day to complete the designated game. 100% completion isn't required. The point of the club is to provoke game discussion, as well as give GameTZ veterans and new users a place to mingle!]

- For every game completed, post a picture as proof of your completion Example. This is essential in order to receive your badge and entry to the monthly raffle.

- You will be awarded with a badge each month you complete the game. All badges will be proudly displayed next to your name in the original post. As long as you "roll credits" the game is considered beaten!

- Some months will feature prizes! Every user to complete the game each month will be thrown into a drawing to win prizes! Users will be assigned a number and users will be randomly generated at some point the following month.

- Each month's prizes will vary. Prizes will be given out by either me or another member. Sometimes physical, sometimes digital. If you would like to contribute, drop me a message. smile

- If you don't own the game, and you have access to it on another platform, you're welcome to play it that way. Just make sure that it's the same version, to qualify for the prize or badge.

- If you do not want to participate in the games, but would like to join in on the conversations, please do!

- If you would like to join, just post here, and I'll add you to the list of users. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or criticism, please don't hesitate to post them!

So, I've tried on my phone, my tablet, and my nVidia Shield TV.

The Shield didn't have any other issues that its controller doesn't already cause, like the Home button being so close to the Pause/Play button. My biggest annoyance is that the keymap flashes on the screen for a few seconds when you first start the game, and then never again. There are a ton of button combinations that you need to memorize that mean absolutely nothing when you've never played the game before. The game also doesn't perform that well, but that's another story.

The tablet has an on-screen keywheel that makes a lot more sense, but it's small, and the icons could use a little more definition. Same performance issues as the Shield, but I think that's just a side effect of running Android apps on Chrome OS, even if the device is pretty high performance.

My phone doesn't have any performance issues, but I also can't get anything other than the menu to respond. I think this requires a gamepad, but I'm not sure.

It seems like a really fun game, and it's got a ton of personality. I just really suck at it so far, and the control issues aren't helping. God bless the Quick Save button.

Any chance you have a bluetooth controller you can hook up to your phone or tablet? Maybe that would make things easier on the gamepad front.

You just happen to have it? Nice! Cool surprise.

Fingers crossed that a future game is an old one that I already happen to have on my phone or PC. Just for the cool feeling of it happening.

Something like skyroads maybe. That was a great one. Difficult at times, but great.

Might even have a floppy disc of it somewhere. But my laptop doesn't even know what a floppy is. *Shoves floppy in CD drive.*

The Stadia controller works on the tablet, so I think I'll go with that. Much less cumbersome than the Shield controller for this sort of game.

Based on the title, and before I saw the cover art, it sounded to me like the game would be a food game, whatever that means.

On the cover of one of the other games in the series, the character is even holding a soda can. I think it might have been Munch's Odyssey, but I'm not positive.

I know you guys have mostly moved onto Oddworld, but I wanted to talk about RE7 for a sec since I'm just now getting into it.

I'm really enjoying it. First hour or so scared the crap out of me but I'm getting into it now. I just

got the shotgun from the main hall and I am going to get the last dog head.

Does anybody have a list of safe rooms? Is it just rooms with save spots or are there others?

So @Frank I asked this earlier and you didn't reply, know you're busy, so no biggie. But since New n Tasty is basically a remaster with HD graphics and doesn't change the gameplay really at all, at least from what I've read, could we just play the original version?

Once you notice the title updated, check out the main post. I update it monthly with an image, the badges (when they're done), platforms it's available on, and versions allowed for completion. Plus I also like to throw in bonuses, like the review this month smile

My goodness, that was frustrating. The second half was definitely a lot easier once I got use to the quirks and controls - and memorized the Gamespeak commands - but holy cow, I had such a hard time.

@Renaissance2K I can definitely see how this game can be frustrating.

I just spent about 20 minutes near the grenade area, trying to figure out how to proceed. I knew that I need to get a grenade, go up the pulley system, drop the grenade, and fall down into the room below, but every time I attempted this I would miss my landing and fall a bunch of floors down, and having to start over. Finally realized I have to lower myself down to hang off the ledge, and then drop down. Twenty minutes of that. Now I keep getting out at the second area. The one with the campfire and the sneaking around. And yeah, a bunch quirky controls to get used to.

@Frank - Same. But in all fairness the game didn't hint to that during the tutorial. It might seem obvious now, but how should we actually know? Before I figured it out, I tried everything, things that don't even make sense :)

Figuring out that tapping the jump button without holding a direction gives you a very precise forward jump was extremely helpful as well, especially during some of the mine segments. I don't think that's illustrated anywhere else.

I'm curious about the PlayStation original now, and its manual. I'm wondering if the controls were any better there, or if the manual did a better job of spelling this stuff out.

Question about the end credits:

What's up with the song?! I guess the dark, industrial tone is fitting for the game's setting (despite how goofy everything is otherwise), but did anyone actually listen to the lyrics before they licensed it? It's clearly about wanting to bone.

Don't read this if you plan on playing it. Or maybe you should. Hmmm. Potential spoiler alert, but not relating to the story or anything. It's something relating to controls that you learn anyway in the 3rd? chapter (Monsaic Lines).

just figured out that you can hold down the chant button near Firefly swarms and they spell out hints. Wish I'd have known this in the 2nd area of the game. I would just tap the button to chant.

I forget how exactly, but they do tell you this, either at the end of the first level or the start of the second. Something nebulous like "CHANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH" next to the first batch of fireflies you encounter.

@Renaissance2K

you're right about that, but I didn't know that I needed to actually hold the button down. Whenever I'd see fireflies, I'd click the chant button briefly, but nothing would happen. I figured, oh well, guess this batch of fireflies is broken smile wry smile Didn't know what else to think.

Oh! Lame!

I understand that they add a delay to chanting because it enables a new puzzle mechanic (won't go into too much detail for those that are still playing), but I'm not a fan of intentionally sluggish controls for that very reason, especially in puzzle games or games with puzzle components. You're always asking yourself, "Am I wrong, or am I right and the controls aren't cooperating?"

nonamesleft
Gold Good Trader This user is on the site NOW (3 minutes ago)
* 17-Nov(#149)
Yeah, exactly. There were several times where I tried doing something and failed, and would keep trying it, because I thought "maybe it's just the controls."

For instance

the first time you need to ride emgu, I think I have the name wrong, to cross the large gap, I kept trying to leap over it with just Abe alone. What would happen is he'd almost make it, and then grab the ledge, and then immediately fall down, so I kept thinking, "what if I'm just leaping a tiny bit too early, or not clicking the up arrow quick enough to pull myself up." The controls sometimes make it seem like it might be me just making a mistake, even if I'm not."

I will say this. The game isn't that easy, that's for sure. It is definitely a challenge, imo.

Currently in the Scrabanian Temple. Wow this is frustrating. Really not easy. wince

Can't play this game for very long periods of time. Had to unwind after Oddworld by playing a Lego game the other day.

I wonder if these PC controls are just a little off. I feel like I'm constantly just getting out, when certain commands should work. Abe just can't jump quick enough or roll quick enough, etc. Unless this game just needs spot on precision, and it's built in as a challenge?

@Frank - You're really making me work hard for this medal :)

@Renaissance2K

How in the world did you solve the 4th door in Scrabanian Temple?!?! (Top right corner. The one that has the bats). I have been attempting that one for I'd say over an hour combined. I left and solved all the others then came back. Still can't figure it out. At least an hour for one single door. I've done everything I can think of. And it's the only door I haven't solved. Just plain stuck here. There actually isn't anything I see here that might be the solution. I'll say, I am very confused as to what to do here.

Would appreciate any help.

I'll explain below:

Enter the #4 door (top right corner door in the temple). Go to the left to get the bell chant. Go to the right where there's a scrab on the ledge. He jumps down and you jump up and dive into the well. You go to the right. There's a lever with a falling floor near it. Pull the lever to light the torch, and you fall. Run to the left, away from the scrab, and duck and roll, so that it can't attack you. Roll some more and you drop down onto the ledge where the well that you dove into is. Now what?! When I first dove into the well, I landed in an area that looks like it contains a mechanism of some sort, maybe one of those pulley elevator systems, but there's no pulley. All I can think is that maybe there's supposed to be an elevator, but there isn't, but that would be a coding error. And I doubt that it's the case. There's usually an answer. Do you recall what you did in that area?

Man, I hope the answer isn't something really obvious, or boy am I going to feel so foolish.

Just attempted this for another hour. What am I missing here? Gonna call it quits for now. This is too much, trying this over and over without a solution. So strange. I can't recall having been this stuck in a video game in a really long time.

But I did notice one new detail:

near the 1st Scrab, the one near the hole that you dive into, there's an up arrow. I guess this indicates that I can go up somehow. Yet there's no pulley system there.

@nonamesleft I remember there being a pulley where you were expecting one, but I can't be 100% sure. Scarabian Temple was a blur for me, and none of the footage I thought I was capturing with "Screen Record" on my phone appears to have been saved.

We were also playing different versions, so it's possible that the remake had tweaked the puzzle.

nonamesleft
Gold Good Trader This user is on the site NOW (3 minutes ago)

@Renaissance2K

You were right. There is (supposed to be) a pulley there. After searching around to see if anyone has experienced something similar, I found someone talking about a similar scenario in Abe's Odyssey, where something that was supposed to be there wasn't.

Luckily, I saved a bunch of times last week. So I started from a different save file. Had to redo some things to get back up to the temple, but now when I went inside the pulley was there. Turns out the other save file glitched somehow.

Glad there was a solution though. Hopefully I can beat this game now.

I wish this game wouldn't make you start over from the beginning of areas when you get out, and instead would let you start from the room you got out in (Celeste does that).

It's a fun game, but can really be frustrating at times. At least the old school pc disc version that I'm playing is. The controls are really wonky at times (wonky must be pronounced in a British accent for intended effect).

Surprisingly I've earned the last 7 month's badges straight and they've been pretty eclectic, but I haven't even bothered with OAO this month (nor trying for the Retro's Sonic CD title either). But the first half of the month I was focused on beating Darksiders 3 before it left GP and now I'm focused on some other titles related to Antipop's Beat a game for all platforms in 2020 thread.

I think if I would have already owned the re-release of this I might have gone for it, but <shrug>
Thanks again @Frank it's been enjoyable playing some games that I don't think I would have bothered with otherwise - specifically RE7, UGG and Tacoma recently, plus pushing me to replay some other enjoyable games like Arkham City.
