Welcome to The GameTZ Game Club! This is my attempt at forming an easy to get into book club type thing, but with games! Anybody and everybody is welcome to join in on the fun!
- Each month a random game will be chosen, by myself, for the club to play. Games can vary from the beginning of gaming onward to current generation platforms. There's no limitations!
- You have from the 1st of every month to 11:59PM EST of the final day to complete the designated game. 100% completion isn't required. The point of the club is to provoke game discussion, as well as give GameTZ veterans and new users a place to mingle!]
- For every game completed, post a picture as proof of your completion Example. This is essential in order to receive your badge and entry to the monthly raffle.
- You will be awarded with a badge each month you complete the game. All badges will be proudly displayed next to your name in the original post. As long as you "roll credits" the game is considered beaten!
- Some months will feature prizes! Every user to complete the game each month will be thrown into a drawing to win prizes! Users will be assigned a number and users will be randomly generated at some point the following month.
- Each month's prizes will vary. Prizes will be given out by either me or another member. Sometimes physical, sometimes digital. If you would like to contribute, drop me a message.
- If you don't own the game, and you have access to it on another platform, you're welcome to play it that way. Just make sure that it's the same version, to qualify for the prize or badge.
- If you do not want to participate in the games, but would like to join in on the conversations, please do!
- If you would like to join, just post here, and I'll add you to the list of users. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or criticism, please don't hesitate to post them!

30th star acquired and just played through a level that was like Super Monkey Ball. Man, it has been so long that I had almost forgotten just how good this game is. I was worried over nothing, it for sure aged better than Super Mario 64.
50 stars down, only 10 more to go. Actually a lot more than 10 because I plan to 100% complete this, but just like the months with Resident Evil 7 and Batman: Arkham City, since I'm not currently playing through anything else I'm just breezing right through this.
I'm honestly not enjoying Space Muscached Italian as much as I did in the day. Controlling the starbits with the controller just feels weird to me.
And the fact that most areas have fixed camera angles... I just feel like it hasn't aged AS well as I'd liked. Definitely my opinion though. I'm still enjoying it, and I'm only like 11 or 12 stars in right now.
Donion rings. I actually had been getting all stars and returning to levels for the comets so that by the time I reached 60 stars I skipped the entire last batch of Galaxies and just went straight for Bowser. image
74 stars deep now. I'm actually struggling on Battlerock Galaxy, with the comet where you need to collect 100 purple coins. This is one of the only times where the controls have been tricking me because they are reversed when you're underneath the moving platform. The most I've been able to collect is 99 coins and that was only one time.
Also I wanna say that I really like the bee suit power-up. It's probably my favorite power-up out of all the 3D Mario titles.
91 stars now. I just got up to the dreaded Luigi's Purple Coins level. I failed several times when using Joy-Cons, but I figured since I don't need to collect Star Bits in this level and thus don't need to control the pointer thingy, I should try just going back to the Pro Controller because the analog sticks just feel better. It might just be a coincidence but I beat it easily after that. Probably the best advice for this level is to not even worry about the timer, you are given more than enough time to collect all 100 coins.
Just started playing a couple nights ago. So far, it's pretty good. Controls get a bit weird when running around a sphere. I find myself letting go of the left thumbstick from time to time because Mario isn't moving in the proper direction. Once I leave it for half a second, everything is fine. Even with that, I'm enjoying it more than 64 or Sunshine.
I got all 120 stars now, time to knock that off my bucket list. After the Luigi's Purple Coins level I decided to just stick with the Pro Controller, a decision I do not regret since I pretty much just breezed through the rest of the game from then on. The final star I got was "The Galaxy's Greatest Wave", the goal was to finish in 1:30.00 and I finished in 1:29.70
It sucks that you don't unlock Luigi until after you've collected all 120 stars. If he was playable from the start I would've played exclusively as him, but my backlog is far too big to play through the whole game again as him, so I'm moving on to another game now.
I had forgot that you unlocked Luigi after earning all 120... I wasn't sure if I was going to play this again, but since I know I can play as Luigi, having beat it many years ago, I'm thinking that I will try to beat it. Will likely not target getting everything, and I recall his jump was rather different so hopefully that won't be a PITA. But since it's been years since I played, I surely won't be used to using Mario.
Approaching the halfway mark. I've played Galaxy before, way back in the launch days, but didn't make it very far. I definitely prefer the "many galaxies with a few levels each" format over the one they used in Mario 64, and the gravity mechanic is a real head bending trip.
I think the sound of constipated glee the Lumas grunt when they TRANSFOOOORM is one of the greatest sound effects in gaming.
Finally got into this tonight, brought back some good memories as I rather enjoyed earning everything back in the day. Save file indicates I haven't played it since mid-2008. I had unlocked Luigi and started the game over as him, only getting to the main hub area. I earned all of the stars in the first terrace, think I might stick to only doing all 3 stars for the main worlds that I enjoy.
Game still has charm, but the controls and some other things are dated. Will see if I can push through before the end of the month.
I ended up beating it the other night. Definitely grows on you the more you play. I'm mixed honestly, as it does a lot right. The fixed camera angles really suck the majority of the time though. A free form camera in the Switch port would have been great!
I really enjoyed revisiting it, but I can't decide if I liked it more than Super Mario Odyssey or not. I feel that just like SMO though, it was almost disappointingly easy.
It really sucks that there's supposedly this extra hard final level locked behind you having to complete the game all over again as Luigi. That just feels like a cheap way to extend the length of your game and a lazy decision on Nintendo's part. If I remember correctly they made you do that in either New Super Mario Bros. 2 or Super Mario 3D Land as well, but my backlog was almost nonexistent back then so I had no problem doing it.
> Especially since Luigi's gameplay was a bit more difficult (if my memory serves me correctly)
Yeah he handles a little worse, I read and can concur that he's got less traction, not to dissimilar to how he felt in SMB2 - where his legs would get going and then you'd build some momentum but would slide after stopping your input. He doesn't seem to do the progressively higher jumps either, but does jump higher in general.
@Frank I recall a few levels were a true PITA to get all the stuff and get all 121 Stars as Mario. Doing so burned me out on the title and as mentioned it was 12 years since I touched it. I don't see me striving to earn all 121 again as Luigi. I just checked and you only need 60 to face Bowser and beat it, I've only got 12 so far and think I'll seek only 60+ before attempting to beat it. Plus the month is basically half gone and I've only found time to play it once so far.
Got to 30 stars, so basically half way. Some times the camera rather sucks, but besides 1 annoying section that I needed to retry a handful of times, it's been enjoyable revisiting a number of the levels.
Just beat this, can/will post picture proof later. I earned a star from every planet expect for the final hungry dude's one where you have to catch the 3 bunnies in the snow - tried that a few times and gave up. I wanted to earn one though for all levels since you could effectively skip some and I figured it would be more proper to at least collect a star on all planets.
I forgot how goofy the camera could be and how bad the controls felt on some of the really small planets and swimming. I was still largely enjoyable going down memory lane, so solid choice @Frank.
