"RULES"
1. Have fun 2. Beat games - proof NOT required via an image, but lying is lame and you won't 'win' anything for beating the most games 3. IF you are interested in badges, when you beat a game for 1, include something like 'Counts towards badge X' OR 'Earns me badge X, first game was Y' 4. IF you don't care about badges, then I will not be handing them out 5. No monthly leaderboards will exist in '22, I will post in the thread maybe around mid month and after month's end the top 5 or so participants 6. DLC generally doesn't count towards badges and any 1 game can only count towards a single badge

I finally got the end credits in borderlands 3 on PS5. I'm getting a series X in a couple of days, so it won't be long before I start knocking out some games on Xbox.
Atari Lynx finished! I beat WarBirds . [imgt w=2048 h=1536]https://i.imgur.com/lbxckxv.jpeg[/imgt] You get six dogfighting stages that are pretty cool graphically--the areas are 3D polygons on a 1989 handheld. Problem is they're not super fun to play. I didn't have a terrible time, but I'm not eager to go back to this one. The music on the menu was jammin', but stages lack music completely. I had to turn off collision deaths to make this beatable, as they happen far too often.
@Slickriven Do you still want a new Girl Power badge image? Shantae would work, but I'm also partial to Bayonetta. She'd uphold the 'Power' part of Girl Power. I'm hesitant to use Shantae because we may get an Indie badge someday, and having two indie game character images for different badges would feel redundant IMO.
LBP 2 is by far the most challenging of LBP 2/3/Sackboy. Some of these levels took well over an hour to finally ace. In comparison I don't think I had to try more than 5 times to ace any level in LBP 3. Since the servers are closed for PS3 LBP games I definitely missed out on that part of the game. The MP in LBP 3 is pretty bad, so if it was anything like that then I didn't miss much. Sackboy is still my favorite of the three games. I'll keep playing that, but not much desire to play the others again. They were great to experience, but will take a few years for sure before I'd want to revisit.
Also completed Cybxus Heart
I didn't like this game. The hit detection is awful and the bosses feel impossible. If it wasn't for easy mode I'd never beat this. Even then I struggled. I did like the idea of having 3 different robots that you can rotate at will, each having their own weapon. Problem is the yellow guy was pretty much useless. The red guy had basically a shotgun type weapon and it was pretty good. The blue guy had homing missiles so unless you wanted to struggle even more there is no reason at all to use anyone but the blue guy. You collect energy and the more energy you get the stronger the weapons become. At 100% power you melt everything, even bosses. But the bosses all have like 7 phases and they throw out some attacks that engulphed the screen with basically no chance to avoid them. So you will loose that power and then struggle with however many phases you had left.

Hope the procedure went well and hope you can play some of them games without too much discomfort! We had an unreliable worker who is getting placed on a leave of absence, and someone else got Covid, so we are doubling down. All work and no play for me :(
@SupremeSarna I thought we discussed the Girly/Girl Power badge and were just going to leave it as the Barbie icon. I think the brand of Barbie can and does imply Girl Power as she's not simply what she maybe was back in the 20th century and has become more progressive, empowered, etc.
If you take over in '23 and want to change it, be my guest, I'm good with leaving it as is for now.
As noted, we're closing in on 100 for the month, leaderboard didn't change much, so not relisting here.
Quick note on badges, of the 27, only 2 now are unearned - Raccoon City and S.O.F.T. 2 more have just a single recipient - Cross the Streams and Ninja Gayden The highest earned is surprisingly the JRPG badge with 8, considering most of those games are generally rather long... 2nd highest, with 6, is not surprising as it was highest I think last year - Puzzler 3rd most is a 4-way tie with 5 each - BFFL, G-AM, Guybrush and Pile Drivin'
I beat The Wild at Heart on Switch. This game really surprised me. It's like Pikmin where you use similar looking creatures to fight enemies and solve puzzles. I liked it enough to search out all the missing cats and treasure after I rolled the credits, which is something I rarely ever do.
I beat viva pinata party animals on the xbox360 (I played with other player online, this and golf with your friends (beat with my brother) gets me the BFFL badge)
Which badge would I get for beating borderlands 3 and Wonderlands. Would that count for fps games, or for primary co op game, as I played these games with my brother

Do you feel like you beat it, or just want to move on from it?
My feeling is if you have to ask if something counts, the answer is probably no.
Is there there story mode, or a credit roll at the end of something? If so that's probably where I would count a beating. But I would say without that you would probably need to play a match on each of the boards at least once.
Otherwise it feels kind of like asking if you beat Mario Kart right after you clear the Mushroom Cup.

I can't speak for that version, but I've played allot of Mario Party 1/2/3. The matches are usually pretty long and the AI isnt that bad. You really need to capitalize on the mini games as the AI is pretty good on the actual board. So I could see allowing a clear for just 1 board, but wouldn't argue if it was decided a clear on all boards is required. I have many clears that took far less time/skill/luck than winning 1 game of MP.

It felt like an achievement is all. I got first place in a real party setting against friends, which is the first time I've done that. We classify Tetris 99 as beaten by scoring first place in a single match, since it's extremely stacked against you and will take hours of attempts. Mario Party feels pretty similar to me, with it being totally up in the air who will be in the lead on any turn after random events screw everyone over. I don't think Superstars has any story mode, just parties and individual minigames.
I won't take a clear on this one, but I thought I'd ask and/or make a case for it.

Maybe you can allow it next year. I think you can treat it like the fighting games. Win with 2 characters on any board. Even against AI its far from a guaranteed win and will likely take a few hours.

It is up to you to claim any beat titles for the badges you want - within reason. BL3 could be FPS, could be Vault Boy and of course if you actually play it co-op then BFFL. Could be a stretch, but even JRPG could count for it as well. Just let me know which, if any you want a title to count as. Alternatively, you can be like @Kommie and not care about them - in which case I won't give them to you, or him.
Antipop would pay more attention to the badges - they were sort of his creation, and give them out to folks who didn't stake a claim towards them. But last year certain folks went a little overboard on them and others went the complete opposite direction and didn't want them. My take tried to be more hands off this year - if you want them and can list 2 games for them that are reasonable, then I'll 'hand' them out, but if you don't care/comment about them, then I'm not really going to give anyone a badge that they didn't request.

I mean my opinion is if we can count such a quick game like Donkey Kong (we have) go ahead and count one mario party game, as long as the player just wanted to play it, and isn't counting up every win JUST to rack up their win count.
My goal being here is to get myself to play games I haven't played yet, even if I don't own them. The original idea was to play games you physically own. But I view as a personal goal, finally playing some old game boy original I never played and having fun. As a good result from participating in this thread.

We'll just have to run it past @Slickriven to get a final verdict. If I take over next year, I'll start counting one Mario Party victory as the game beaten--it's no small feat winning one of those against the tough CPU or skilled friends, and they're not short, either.

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it! The procedure wasn't as bad as I expected, and so far the recovery hasn't been as bad as the doctor made it out to be. Another week or so and I should be in the clear. I've definitely been doing a lot of gaming, which has been nice!

So BL3 would count as a JRPG? Part of the reason I haven't went after the badge is its super confusing what is even a JRPG. Even after googling it seems there isn't any one answer. I actually just cleared a game I hoped might qualify, but it would be as much a stretch as BL3. It seems to be allot easier to define what is a western RPG.
Long story short: Smash Ultimate and YouTube videos got me curious about this obscure, Japanese DS game. I made a post about it here, which got a few users interested themselves. @benstylus bought himself a copy months ago and agreed to let me borrow it. Two Saturdays ago, he surprised me by sending me a spare copy to keep! Thanks again, matey! I'll pay that gift forward one of these days.
Slide Adventure MAGKID is a unique puzzle game. It makes use of an exclusive peripheral that turns your DS into a mouse. You slide your DS around a smooth surface to move MAGKID around like a cursor. The plot as far as I could decipher sees a lightning storm strike a residential home, giving life to a fridge magnet and the doodles it was holding up. The doodles then cause trouble for the family, often tearing limbs off the son's toy robot, ROBO GREAT. MAGKID must abduct the individual doodle creatures and return them to the page they escaped from, and also destroy boss monsters who won't. Depending what your abducted enemy chain looks like, you gain different abilities to clear hazards and fight off other foes. There are plenty of minigames that take advantage of the peripheral, too.
The Slide Controller has smooth movement and properly converts your real-world movements into your character. You can slide it about or spin it in circles. Sudden jolts are needed to detach your chain. There are a few rooms that cause the controller to rumble, too. Color me impressed!
I think the game works well, but there's a little too much of it. I wasn't expecting it to be as long as it was; there are 26 stages, seven mini-missions, seven (or was it eight?) bosses, 11 minigames, unskippable cutscenes, and a multiplayer mode! It's robust for sure, but the formula gets stale about halfway through. The game also gets frustratingly difficult about two-thirds in, requiring you to juggle multiple doodles to defeat foes or bring a massive chain from room to room. It doesn't help that the minor enemies will ruin your day--from pigs that steal your doodles and chuck them back at you to mines that deal heavy damage and destroy your chain, you'll grow to hate them. Several bosses are quite hard, too. The last two are nasty.
I like the game, but I probably won't play it again. Thanks for the donation! Now here's a twist ending you shouldn't look at if you plan to play your own copy:
> For me, if it was developed by a Japanese studio and it is an RPG, it is a JRPG.
>
> EVEN IF IT FEELS LIKE A WESTERN RPG.
I don't agree but I won't die on this hill or anything. Cosmic Star Heroine is more of a "JRPG" style game created by a US company. While Elden Ring is a more Western Style open world ARPG created by a Japanese company. I like that each Country can be inspired by eachother's game styles to create fun new games!
As long as we have the terms JRPG and Western RPG in common usage, I don't have a problem with Cosmic Star Heroine being labeled a JRPG-style western RPG.
I just think the terms JRPG and Western RPG are stupid anyway because they indicate geography (or alternetively, ethnicity) as a genre identifier rather than gameplay.
And the term RPG is practically meaningless nowadays too when it seems like just about every game has some kind of stat, power, or level progression.
I play Forza Horizon 5. It has experience and levels and such. You even get to create a character.
I'm currently playing Style Savvy. Your shop levels up as you progress. Each shopper you assist is akin to a random battle and defeating them earns you money and experience. The fashion contests are the boss battles which net you rare loot.
I think the biggest problem is how the game typically seen as a JRPG, WRPG, ARPG, TRPG, etc, has morphed over the years. Initially, the WRPG was more like your old Wizardry or Ultima- the game was more about the adventure than the story, whereas the JRPG was more about the story told through the adventure. (And yes, developers were typically where the letter would indicate.) Both were turn-based, menu-driven games.
As technology marched on, the ARPG came about, bringing more action to replace some of the menus. The WRPG was more ready to adapt to this new style, and really blurred the line then between the W and A. Some ARPGs, to stand out, actually started to dumb down the RPG parts to focus on action, and this leads to the current ARPG, which typically doesn't have a traditional progession- skill trees were more born from this. (Remember too that some Japanese companies thought westerners were too dumb for their RPGs- enter Final Fantasy USA, aka Mystic Quest in the US.) Not helping was the relatively unchanged nature of the JRPG, leading some to see it as dated for keeping all the menus.
Continuing on, lines really start to blur. Japanese companies start to embrace an action edge, from FF12 to Demon's Souls, and western companies up their story game, some with stories just as compelling. The blur continues to today. Going back to Souls- is it a JRPG just because it was developed by a Japanese company, or is it an ARPG, for more embracing that aspect, and not keeping to many of the traditional JRPG tropes?
Lastly, we have the TRPG. Fire Emblem is a good way to see the evolution here. But I've never seen much debate as to what makes the TRPG...
