I try to think of hp as a resource. You want to spend it in order to improve other aspects of your position. If I end an act with lots of HP, I probably failed to use it wisely. I could have played more aggressively (e.g. fought more elites to get more relics) or done a card upgrade instead of a heal at a campfire.

Of course, there are times, when it's just better to not lose hp in a fight since you gain nothing for it too. Most often, it just seems best to do damage to end a fight sooner even if you lose a little hp since the enemy is usually getting stronger and will hit you hard eventually if you don't kill it quickly.

That card has been one of my most useful cards in many of my runs. When you have multiple in the deck, it definitely can lead to some fun combos.

Interesting to view hp as a usable resource. Smart idea. I think I'm going to utilize it.

And I definitely hear what you're saying about getting rid of certain enemies quickly at all cost, lest they become too strong as time goes on.

Nice! You're really breezing through.

Any particular favorite cards you like to take with The Defect?

i try to gather as many energy generating cards as possible (double your energy, gain energy for every 3/4 cards in your draw pile, the one that gives you energy but adds a Void to your discard, block + gain 1 energy next turn) and then hope i get some multicast/channel X lightning cards, as well as the "channel 1/2 lightning every time you take damage"
Sometimes it doesnt work out so I adapt but those are the main ones I look for. Plus recently i've come to really utilize the Block card that restores a discarded card, last 2 runs i had 2-3 of those in my deck

That's Hologram, great card! There's a nice little trick you can use it for. If you don't really have anything in your discard pile that you need to return (maybe you don't have energy to play anything else), return a Void or Daze so that it will exhaust and you won't draw it when your discard pile shuffles back into your draw pile!

Yep, im bad at remembering the names of the cards/relics lol
I tried the A11 run earlier but couldnt get over initial hump and lost like midway through act 1 in elite battle against those 3 robotic eye things, i wasn't ready for them unfortunately
Might try another run tonight just to see how it goes

For me, the biggest jumps in difficulty were 2-4, 7-9, and 17-20. Those are the ones that make enemies harder in some way (deadlier, tougher, more challenging movesets/abilities). All of the other ascension modifiers were mostly slight annoyances, although they do make the game much harder collectively. They just don't seem as bad adding one of them at a time.

yeah this A11 just removes a potion slot which doesnt seem like a big deal, but i'm prone to crapty runs regardless, especially in the first act I seem to be vulnerable, when I squeeze through those initial hurdles I have a decent conversion rate afterwards, but sometimes i just can't compete, especially when there's multiple enemies, that's my biggest challenge early on

Act I starts to get pretty hard as you climb higher and higher up ascension. Even some of the lower hallway fights can deal a lot of damage to you (screw you Jaw Worm!). If you're not able to grab some good cards early on, it's easy to just straight up die in Act I, or barely make it through just to get demolished in Act II if you didn't find a strong rare card and/or boss relic. I also feel like if I'm able to make it through Act I fairly comfortably, I usually make it all the way.

I had a pretty decent A1 run for Silent with kunai. got the Ninja achievement but still couldn't get to the final boss, the elites just were not having my crap, even though I was throwing like 6-10 daggers and dealing extra damage per play and gaining shield. Didn't get enough damage boost, wasn't getting enough shield :(

...wait, no, I did get to the final boss. It was the one where you only get to cast 12 cards then he halts the turn and mows you down. So, that didn't work out! I was getting my ass kicked but I got a full heal off two rooms before the last boss so I thought I was good, I still don't recognize the artworks that pertain to the bosses. I shoulda just quit when I hit act 3 honestly :p

Lots of good things happened on this run, but unfortunately I forgot to recall instead of smith at the last campfire. Ah well, onto A2!

I will say, stick is a blessing and a curse. Obviously with daggers you're gonna be getting a lot of random cards which makes your fifth draw or so onward start to get chaotic, but sometimes you get some real bangers for on the spot fixes, like that card that keeps block from going away between turns. Super sweet. Daggers were doing close to 70 damage when I closed out the fight with the time jerk.

I'm also surprised at how decently I was able to guess next actions without seeing them. At worst I built up block when I didn't need to. Very strong to have another energy right off the bat.

That curse actually had SYNERGY with this run since it was innate! Centennial Puzzle with Blue Candle, every turn 1 I'd exhaust the curse, take a damage and draw more cards. Never had that going before, very neat

I had a really fun run with Ironclad on A3. A lot of cool things happened, and I made a fun discovery.

I took screenshots, but for some reason my Nintendo Switch isn't saving screenshots. @Scott That's why I didn't want to update the game, potential glitches accompanying an update (I had to update the Switch to update Slay the Spire)

Screenshots would have been the best, but nothing I can do about that. Here's some info about the run:

I had:

Necronomicon (relic that gives you a curse card and the first 2 or higher attack cost used each turn is played twice)

and Rupture - when you lose HP due to a card effect, gain 1 strength (2 for the upgraded card)

And I got the blue candle relic (you can play and exhaust unplayable curse cards at the cost of 1 HP)

Each time I played Necronomicon with Rupture in play, I gained 2 strength. And Necronomicon returns to your hand when exhausted. So you can keep doing this (you just need to be mindful of your HP)

I had a fun and synergetic deck. I had Fiend Fire, which worked really well with cards like Power Through (gain 15 block and add 2 Wound cards) and the relic that gives you +1 energy each turn at the cost of 2 wound cards.

Necronomicon + Pen Nib + Bludgeon is something I wanted to try, but the 10th turn Pen Nib didn't allign.

I started off by trading my relic. I got Pandora's Box, which transformed all of my Strikes and Defend cards. So a more variety run right at the beginning.

I also had Runic Pyramid which is fun, but that was a double edged sword. It allowed me to hold on to status cards, which I used towards Fiend Fire's exhaust cost, but it also made that I was drawing less cards due to cards being held.

Flower Pot was fun, gaining that extra energy.

I got all the way to the Corrupt Heart with 3 fairy potions.

But sadly, I was still defeated.

Though at least A4 is still unlocked.

I wish I knew what was causing the screenshot not saving glitch, so that I could have posted my deck and relics. This was an unusual and fun run.

So, I did some digging in my Switch photos/videos and I found the photos that seemingly hadn't saved. I couldn't find them in the photo album, but there was an option to search photos for a particular game. I searched Slay the Spire and they were in there. It turns out that for some reason the photos were saved into somewhere smack in the middle of the Switch photo album, instead of the usual 'most recent first' order. I have no idea why. So this made it seem like nothing was saved when I entered photos. Maybe this has something to do with the most recent Switch update doing something, I don't know.

Now that I found the photos, here was my latest run. It was fun and different.

Necronomicon finished this opponent off with the 2x attack:

After several failures, including dying at act 3 boss twice, i did the A11 run, this time pretty smooth sailing. Around 35 cards total (including couple curses), had constant energy generation (+ ice cream), one channel X lightning and one channel 7 block X times card, a couple upgraded holograms, echo form, a few focus builders. And that was enough. Also had around 115 max HP by the end of it, kept getting increases

Ice cream is a fantastic relic. Echo Form is one of my favorite cards. Ever used Echo Form on an Echo Form? Good stuff :)

Yeah i think one run I was frequently stacking echo forms (had 2 of em + play next power card twice + draw random power card each turn, something like that)
Ice cream is amazing, wish I had it more often

I've got a pretty good A20 Ironclad run going right now. I already have Corruption, Dark Embrace, and Feel No Pain, and I'm not even done with Act I yet. Those cards are a great foundation for a deck that can beat the heart, just hope I don't screw it up before then.

When I started playing, I first went for an Act III clear with each character. After I got that, I beat the heart with each character (still on A0). Then, I started climbing the Ascension ladder, but never went after the heart again. I really hate the heart fight (and the Act IV Elites, for that matter), plus I don't like having to collect the keys. Also, there are a lot of decks that can beat Act III but not Act IV, so I just focused on beating Act III on each Ascension level since that's all that's required for it. Now that I finished A20 with character and I'm going for A20H, I wonder if it would have been smarter to go for the heart each time. It would have taken longer, but I'd be much more experienced reaching and beating it.

Based on trophies, I started playing 25-Dec-2019. Within a month, I'd gotten the heart kill Ending for each of the main 3. I don't think I went for the Ending after that much if at all.

after some depressing act 1 failures, i just demolished time eater, A13 now

I had a pretty crazy setup going, all kinds of power cards, healing 2 hp each time, channel lightning when taking damage, was generating good block. Only thing I was missing was more scakable energy but i got ice cream like 3 fights before end so that helped a bit. Most of act 3 was a breeze, i would intentionally stay in fights longer just to heal up with power cards lol

Ah, I should have worded it differently. I was referring to the possibility of not having any skills to play.

In a short fight, if you've been exhausting skills, you'll probably have defeated or nearly defeated the enemy at that point. But during a boss fight? Exhausting skills left and right during a boss fight seems very risky.

Yeah, pretty much any hallway fight, you should be able to win before it matters. Same for Elite fights. Bosses, you may need to hold off before putting it into play. Or, go infinite by exhausting everything except the few key cards you need to make the infinite work.

And it actually raised max HP.

There's no way I could have pulled this run off without Apparition and Demon Form. I simply didn't have hard hitting attack cards. Now with Demon Form, that's another story. A 20 x4 pummel is pretty strong.

And Apotheosis is fantastic. Great card.
