new Thread Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

5, 7, 5 is the structure. I guess syllables would be the most appropriate translation here.

It is also traditional to reference the seasons in some way. I could write in 5/7/5 all day but it takes a real man to talk about the weather

I'll take your word for it, since I don't know anything about Japanese. I just figured the alphabets were totally different.

Japanese is actually very similar to Spanish in terms of pronunciation. If you know this table(katakana), you will be able to figure out most of the menus in imports.

Ku-ro-u-something

It's fun, if you know how to pronounce it you can at least look up most of the characters using that chart. I need to get cracking on Genki.

the " makes the character have a slightly different sound.

Normally it would be Ku-ra-u-to, but because of the double quote, it makes it a "do" sound.

New LRG games announced on an E3 stream today. I haven't heard of any of them, but it could be because I don't keep up with modern stuff. The Bunker is apparently an FMV game. They also heavily implied Windjammers is on the horizon, which would be excellent.

1 - Croixieur Sigma

2 - Layers of Fear 2

3 - Bard's Gold

4 - Ghost Blade HD

5 - The Bunker

6 - Factotum 90

7 - Mercenary Kings

8 - Claire: Extend Cut

9 - Jotun

10 - Aero

11 - The Flame in the Flood

12 - Kero Blaster

13 - 2064

14 - Volume (PS4)

15 - Momodora

16 - Va - 11 Hall - A

17 - Rive

After I finish Gypsy's Soul Blazer I think Panzer Dragon 1 is my next play through, and then Ys III. If your copy is still available, and I can afford it, I might hunt it down. Retro Thread Pilfer & Scoops Program
Here is how it works:

Offer up an item with value more than $10, shipping is paid for by the person offering. But before you can lock in the scoop, you have to offer up a "pilfer" of your own worth $10 or more in value.
- 24 hours to try to get someone to take your item. If no one takes it after 24 hours, it will revert back to the previous deal so someone else can have a chance. Feel free to change it up before your time expires.
- You need to be at least Bronze Star to participate. Regular GameTZ trade rules apply.
- Please wait until at least 2 layers of new scoops before pending trade.
- No price means free. No PayPal needs to be involved, but can be used to offer higher up items. e-Currency is OK.
- Trying not to put more limits than needed, when crap happens, we will try to work it out.

I love Crisis Core and thought it was a very refreshing take on an unexplored story arc in FF7. And the gameplay is much more appealing than old turned based battles.

I want to play through FF7 again on PlayStation 4, I beat it a few years ago again on PlayStation Vita which was a nice since I don't have to fall asleep in front of my TV screen

I remember the last time even seeing UMDs at stores it was at a dollar tree and they were mixed in with the pasta shells and spaghetti sauce.

Are any of them even worth money? I see a few tv shows, but most of em are horribly unfinished.

@jd yes I have been waiting on that to be a thing since ff7 remake was announced and ff7 got the ps4 version. and yes .hack ps4... now if they will just do the first four too

@Lunar ya I want to play the ps4 ff7 as well, its time to play it again, I haven't in several years and I used to start every new year off playing it. I kept my save on my old memory card and I would play the story up to the end and then load with my max party and destroy sephiroth lol.

yes even with the super weird story I love advent children, ff7 was my number 1 game ever for many many years and when a sequel of all things, albeit a movie was coming my excitement knew no bounds, I took off work on release day for it. Crisis core was such a cool game, id have likely not bought a psp otherwise, its still one of the only games ive actually played to completion on psp. and seeing another side of things was amazing, and that ending...I balled.. I stayed and stayed and fought and fought ... it is still one of the most powerful things ive experienced in a game, and think that makes the the ending of advent that much more. ive also read the maiden and the case of tifa and barret... there is so much there. ps4 updates of crisis core and dirge would be amazing, even though dirge is a mediocre game, maybe if the remake is crazy successful, as if it wont be, ff7 fandom is legion, we will get those.

Always. I'd just have to offer up a comparatively low value game (which probably wouldn't get taken) to lock $10 in.

Should we up the minimum? We have been getting a bunch of decent budget titles but as varied as WT's choices are, seems like we are done with that tier.

If so, we can do $20 min, and same rules. You can go higher and ask PP to even it out.

I think most here are pretty happy with it being a lower value item swap. It's harder to move lower value stuff in the first place, so this helps facilitate it. I've quit bothering with selling anything under $25 on eBay now.

They were really not worth what they go for in the aftermarket to me. Hence why they were part of the small number of PS2 titles I had an interest in but don't own.

When we look in general at the tags on overpriced PS2 games... I'd say the G.U. titles are ...CLOSE to deserving their pricetags, keeping in mind there's probably many dozens of games much much cheaper that are much better. I can see why they stayed close to retail, because they're pretty fun. They also get a hefty Animu tax, but they stayed up because they're in demand and they're good games.

Unless you really handpick titles, PS2 is pretty budget last I knew. Like of course most of the horror games are overpriced (due to poor initial sales) but thankfully a lot of bad offenders got reprinted. It's not Xbox, but it's also very far from Saturn or Turbo Grafx in terms of bang for your buck.

I mean, at the base it's literally "trading", we have a financial market basically designed on just that sort of thing, it's called Capitalism. But it takes real salty balls to call it what it is and bold-faced say "WHO WANTS TO GIVE ME BETTER STUFF FOR MY CRAPPY STUFF".

This guy's thread says he's trading ???? for ????, lol. Brilliant. I actually have GoldeneyeGamer's paperclip. I think he's a kid and he's an active NA poster so I traded him a random game from my 2600 crap pile to get him started. Now everyone's come out of the woodwork though.

Same owners as the other ones in the city (and else where in the quad-state area ... apparently there's one in New Haven now) ... the ones throughout the city seem to have an unstated theme to them. The original one in Williamsburg is the old school-est of the bunch, Chelsea has more multi-player games (NBA Jam, Turtles, Simpsons, etc), and St. Marks has the most fighting games (and possibly the only neo geo of the bunch). That one has been down there for a couple of years, and when it isn't overrun with NYU kids, it's probably the best dive bar-y of the bunch. Williamsburg is the best bar to just hang out in when it isn't overrun by hipsters (although I think they only have beer), and Chelsea kinda sucks, unless it's the middle of the day - it's always just packed. Good tots though.

Then you wouldn't recognize it in 2017 ...

For example, you might remember St. Mark's Games .... one of Manhattan's few retro gaming stores. It was a long, narrow mess of a store (I can't even remember if I should call it over priced because I was too broke and in college to buy anything of real value). They are still around, just a few blocks over, and in a bigger space, and renamed VideoGamesNewYork (and, at this point in my life, I can assure you, they are overpriced).

I saw all 3 of those you mentioned in the St. Marks one. Also, T2, Chiller, Dynamite Cop...the fighting games are kinda eh, I played SamSho 2, I saw KoF 97 or 98, Marvel vs. Capcom 1, SFA2, Mortal Kombat 2, UMK3...that's it I think.

They had 2 Neo Geo cabinets, the selections were OK. I can't remember what USED to be there, I know I have been in the top floor balcony of that building when we went for Karaoke a few years back.

I dont think so. There were a bunch of basement games stores in Chinatown, but back before I got enough into collecting to really appreciate what they had to offer.

I'm sure there were others, but most of them are just gone now.

There is one basement store left that I know of, it's a bunch of guys that used to work/own Manhattan's only Play N Trade. They also moved to St Marks for like a year or so, as an independent business after they got out of PNT as 8-Bit and Up. They are now closer to 2nd ave and Soho... by far a much better store to be in. The guys that run it are chill, and the prices are reasonable. If anyone here is ever in the city, that should be a must visit (and then walk over to VGNY and marvel at their insane selection and prices)

I like bookoff too, but you're right, their prices got insane, like all of a sudden. They're good for random cheap imports, that are basically blind buys. Spend $10 on a random SS import because it's got an insane cover and see what you get ...

Yeah this is pretty much how it works. Have good prices and get ravaged/never keep anything in (esp somewhere like NY) or have insane prices and have a great selection (and occasionally sell crap but mostly sell new releases and bargain bin older games).

Not keeping anything great in is a bit dangerous, because then a lot of walk-in customers won't think you have a good selection.

7+ years ago before the old game pricing boom, a store near me was pretty much out in front of it and the ideas behind it. $12 games on eBay for $70 in store. I was basically, politely told to eff off by an employee when I tried to haggle there so that was the last time I went in there. Before that though I had talked to the owner a fair bit and he was saying that most purchases are going to be $10 or less anyway, so only have the complete garbage priced cheap, people will buy it anyway looking for something to buy. And as for competition he said it was only worth being competitive on new games prices, and crap Gamestop actively has in stock for newer games. He said that people will then perceive the store as having good prices. Judging by their google reviews and crap, they have quit even bothering with that. With older "rare/desirable" games he mentioned some blablabla about having to pay good prices to get good games in thus making him mark them really high but also mentioned that his target consumer there is essentially people that don't check online/refuse to buy online, and that what choice do those people have to get harder to find old games. Also some crap about how he felt old games had a lot of room to go up compared to eBay (which tbf, he was right about).

Basically, people are f@#&ing stupid but we already knew that.

Lunar wrote:

Speaking of Chinatown shops, I remember walking into one of those random variety shops on Grand, they had no games out but I went in and asked if they had any. They brought out a case of sealed N64 games, most were crap of course but there was one in there that caught my eye. This was back in the early 2000s, so sealed N64 prices were still "normal". But I did pick it up, sealed was intact and box in good shape, no crushing. It was Harvest Moon 64, I wish I had kept it. I think I traded on here.

Yea, sometimes they go on clearance. But mostly names you never heard of. Unless you like Enka...

I actually have bought Japanese CDs from them at "normal" prices like $15-$25. Newer release music CDs are so damn expensive in Japan, so when they have it at a reasonable price I just pick it up.
I just wish they actually bring over decent games from their Japanese stores. All they bring over is import RPGs and random 100 yen titles. No shmups, platformers etc.

They used to have let's say...PS2 games were all $5 or less. Now they mark up Dragon Quest VIII to like $20, like why would I buy the unplayable Japanese copy when US English copy is $10-$15?

They have a weird buy list though, usually newer release for like $25-$35 in CASH. Like...sometimes you can buy at GCU prices and sell to them for CASH and still make a profit.

Like I said, they hired a douchbag to manage their gaming department.

Probably closer to $200-$250. It'd be no questions asked if it was a stock mini 2(16gb and WIFI model), but because of the 64GB and LTE, my intital cost was $100+ more than stock. So I'm kinda hesitating.

Yeah that's the one. Going to keep it because why not. And yeah it's very narrow but I've always been a fan of playing various genres with specific peripherals. I have a Logitech G27 for racing games, a custom stick for fighters and shooties etc... So now I'll check out a lot more flight sims.

MSRP is pretty nuts, don't think I'd ever pay it, but thankfully now I'll never have to find out. I was always kind of interested but it was a lower priority due to the cost.

As long as you aren't using composite on an LCD, the result is generally livable. I've just been using PS2 component (which isn't the best) with PVM, regular SD consumer trinitron and HD trinitron and it's all fine. Whenever I actually go to play more PS1/2 I will grab a scart cable to see what differences I notice but for now I can't see myself playing something that isn't on PS4 or PC for awhile.

Oh, actually the main story did get finished in about 12 hours, add 22 minutes (probably all 3 of my deaths throughout my run-through, give or take another half hour).

Not bad. Ending was terrible (Story was fine, but it was like... quickly thrown together, heavily scripted, QTE ENDBOSS, NOT EVEN FIGHT + QTE. JUST... QTE). I'm assuming the 36 percent is supposed to signify there was another 64% of pointless game to play, and I say pointless because yes, you get your Urukai thug army together but you see them in action twice, and it's completely impersonal. No one is really like that, it's just an attempt to rip you off load of crock. Games are meant to be played, but just because I believe that doesn't mean I'd trade Spriggan for Akai Katana. I'm not looking to line the pockets of some random person I don't know, but some users seem to expect that here.

I was talking to @Lunar about this recently and I try to completely separate business and random chat and crap here. So I'm generally willing to deal with anyone. I do have four people filtered however. As well as a few people that get lower than normal priority (ie I might wait a day or two hoping for more offers before responding to them) when wanting to buy something from me. Especially if I'm offering a really good price. It's no one that's ever posted in this thread.

Yea. They said "well, you said complete in box, which is misleading".

I guess there is some basis for it since Wii U has a weird design that the digital games actually stays on the system if it's pre-loaded(don't know if the WW HD digital copy is preloaded or came with a code, if someone can clarify)

I just paired the Zelda decal-ed Gamepad with DD's Wii U to make it ZELDA edition.

In either case, I offered full refund or I can ship them a WW HD physical copy.

To the best of my knowledge, only two games ever came pre-installed on the system: Mario Kart 8 and Nintendo Land. Any other games were a download code or physical additions. NSMB SKU, for instance, had the physical NSMB/Luigi U game packed in.

I would like to remind everyone that this is the same user that made forgotten_freshness lowered his price on Magical Chase by over $1,000 and immediately listed it on eBay when he dropped it off.

Also lunar, I have a used copy of wind waker for Wii u I'll sell, but I'm not in the states right now. If you still need it by the time I get back, I'll hit you up.

Anyways isn't the guy who's selling that Dynastic Hero the same one who got a magical chase from here for cheap and then scalped the hell out of it?

I'm hoping something will be up until then. The seller has 5 of them, but two sold already (at regular price which makes me hesitant to offer) and 7 watchers (which isn't a ton compared to some things but for a niche electronics item like this...).

System's a little dirty but I BOUGHT IT TO PLAY, NOT TO WORRY ABOUT STUPID CRAP

And I FINALLY got to fire up Pocky & Rocky for a bit, but since @Tad recommended First Samurai, I gave that a shot, and I'll be damned if that game ain't legit as fudge. Can't believe it's so cheap, it's super playable. I will be finding a way to incorporate the phrase "OH NO, MY SWORD" into normal conversations. Interestingly they seem to have inserted more instruction in-game than was present in the Japanese version; that one you kinda had to figure out some real obscure mechanics all on your own.

TRADE/SELL LIST CURRENTLY

Super Nintendo
Spanky's Quest (initials "EMR" in black marker on the back but you can probably rub that out with a magic marker and some time)
Jurassic Park
Mickey Mania

Super Famicom
Super Mario Bros 4: Super Mario World
Tiny Toon Adventure

Sega Dreamcast Japan
Capcom vs SNK: Millennium Fight 2000
Guilty Gear X

Nintendo Switch
Arms

Honestly, anything on my list for anything in my wanteds.

Yeah, when I first played it I didn't even think it was a US game, cause I had never even heard of it before. But it is actually a really cool game, and yeah the OH MY SWORD! thing cracks me up every time.

I'm assuming they actually make those in-house instead of publishing from other developers like they used to, pretty cool that they're still around. I believe First Samurai was actually designed by a British guy, which kinda explains the over-the-top mysticism and strange conceptions of the eras and mannerisms. Which I find to have their own charm.

My favorite video game movie has got to be Street Fighter The Movie. It's almost like a comedy, except Raul Julia died making that masterpiece. Which was sad.
