new Thread Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Well they didn't completely disappear but yeah I guess flicker would be a much better term. It was like they were flashing during gameplay. Or "flickering".

I love great graphics just as much as I love great art in a video game. The cut scenes during Ninja Gaiden and the way that these backgrounds look while not necessarily "great graphics" they kind of are because this game outside of level 1 is kind of beautiful despite its 8 bit limitations.

Also @DiamondDave thanks for the heads up about the snes trilogy, it sounds like they messed it up especially if the controls are off. It doesn't mean I won't ever want to play it but I'm not as interested as before now.

I'll probably do a bit of streaming on it tonight perhaps, see how long I can stomach it. I remember it making me legitimately angry that it was so poorly put together, probably because I hold NG up on a particularly high pedestal because it's such a tight, consistent gaming experience for me.

I actually love the presentation of thr NG cut scenes. And i think what people perceive as quality of graphis is what they grew up on. I happen to think NG graphics are pretty awesome. Though my RPG graphic threshold has to be at least 16 bit.

Nice! And I agree that the original game on Nes especially compared to other nes games of the time is very unique in how well it played and controlled. I haven't played the second game at all in 20+ years either but I remembered liking it a lot as well.

I don't know if you ever played ninja gaiden in the arcades but despite better graphics (again subjective since I like the nes graphics better despite obviously more powerful arcade hardware capabilities) in comparison to the nes version it's an inferior game as far as I'm concerned. There were some neat ideas which were kinda gimmicky to me, like I think I remember climbing across levels while grabbing pipes or conduits overhead lol. But the actual implementation of it during gameplay was just for show really, kind of useless. I could be remembering this all wrong though, so don't hold me to it in the off chance I'm thinking of the wrong game.

Ooh, man, I've got so many NG stream ideas now. Did you guys know NG was released in Japan on PC Engine? And that it had a built-in English translation? That was BETTER than the NES translation?

A lot changed including the music, and it's a bit broken (they couldn't properly pull off parallax scrolling in the background so it looks super messed up, but they fixed some of the weird perspective issues in the graphics on the NES version) but it's certainly interesting! Might even try to throw in some commentary as I play that one, we'll see.

I never really could enjoy the arcade game; with the NES version being my basis of origin, the Arcade game was so wildly different. Had a super sick continue screen though.

You hardcore NGers with your terms...slash canceling? Jump climbing?(I think I have an idea what this is.) Splitting pedals? Wut the wat?

Only particular wall jumping part I remember that was difficult was the part where you hace to jump to a lower wall to jump to the next platform which was hard because you can easily miss and die. And also there was a bird fluttering about that could kill you if you fail too many attempts.

You were doing jump climbing in your playthrough (you know, kinda!) when you had to jump to the side and quickly move back to move up a vertical wall instead of into a hole. That three-point jump you struggled with, you can actually bypass by jump climbing high enough on the upper wall until you just phase through it, but you've gotta be quick and it honestly only saves a second or two if you've got the three point down.

Slash cancelling lets you slash multiple times in one jump. Mid-jump hold down, slash, release down, repeat rapidly.

3 point is just easier and faster. Only time i really need to use jump climbing was to kill the damn machine gun idiot in 6-2

Jump climb's more consistent however, which is what speed runners want. You bone that three point jump or get unlucky with an enemy spawn and your speed run is over.

Personally I don't use it, three point's doable, and I don't slash cancel out of stubbornness. May try to learn it but not concerned about it at this point since the only enemies it's useful for are the bosses and the spin jump is a superior solution that I think works on every boss in the game.

I usually can't get into the arcade versions of games that are so different than their home ports. A local barcade got a Guerrilla War but I just want to play the NES version. Gimme that arcade Shinobi though.

If the enemies are flickering too much maybe you should kill more of them so they're no longer on screen!

Just run straight off your platform onto his platform and slash. He walks to the left side of the platform and you will kill him before he has a chance to shoot. Stop making things hard for yourself.

No those cut scenes really are fairly high quality, in all sincerity. They took very limited memory and got a ton of decent story and really good almost cinematic presentation for an 8 bit system. It's surprising how well this game has held up.

People don't even try anymore I sometimes feel like.

Also I do like old school RPGs, again I prefer the nes dragon warriors (at least 1and 2 since I don't know that I ever played 3 and 4) and the Genesis Shining Force games over pretty much any other old school RPGs, it's partially nostalgia I'm sure but also the fight interfaces too. Probably like how I prefer Microsoft Windows over most Apple stuff. (As I'm typing this message on my iPhone lol)

But yeah the over worlds in a lot of old RPGs look like garbage but they are meant to be that way, it's a means to an end. They want you to see as much of the world you are traveling at a time so you know where you're going. I'm surprised just how many games still use this exact method in RPGs to this day lol. Almost like it's not a real rpg if you don't have a world map the same way it was in dragon warrior lol. I'm still wanting to pop in dragon warrior again soon but I'm going to keep Ninja Gaiden in there while the Nes is still working fine to hopefully pass it before I try any other games.

It's 11:39 now. Took him 5 months to save that less-than-a-second. There are only two other runners with 11:50 or better times, and 8 total runners with a sub-12.

It's definitely a Ninpo vampire, unfortunate considering it one-shots most of the obnoxious bosses. I like hitting as many of the candles as possible since I generally ignore items (small star versus windmill? Only care about 1/20 times)

You should check out the WR by Arcus, you can see the kind of gross crap you can do with slash cancels on Jaquio form 2.

The any% speedrun absolutely requires spinslash and ninpo management because it saves SO much time on all the bosses. It does one damage PER FRAME so it literally one-shots everything in the game. The only reason you can't use it against Jaquio or the Demon is because they zap your ninpo before the Jaquio fight.

Probably specifically for that reason. Or probably a generalized challenge, like "No items for a one-shot clear after the first form, you cheap bastard", maybe not specifically for the spinslash.

Long as you're willing to make the trek alllllll the way back and admit you suck and pay the price. I think 95% of people just pause the game after the Stage 6 reset, stare at the screen in disbelief for about 30 seconds, then turn off the system.

This exactly, I seriously dislike the spin slash sub weapon. I prefer the midair normal slashes and I like using my boomerang ninja star like a shield for jumping around while not trying to kill every enemy.

I think I can only slash twice in a jump but it's not against bosses. And jump climbing is pretty cool actually I learned how to jump climb pretty decent from all my super meat boy gaming. If you want to be a better speed runner or even shave some time off of your other platforming streams you need to start playing super meat boy. It will improve your ability to play any other platformers faster. It's one of the tightest controlling games I've ever played with split second accuracy and it's just a lot of fun but frustrating as hell until you "level up" your skills while playing 😊
