new Thread Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

I think you would like it if you're a fan of the Fire Emblem games, in particular. There are four playable main characters and they all have their own stories and recruitable characters. That's one reason why I played it so much as a teenager. (I usually just played as the vampire in more recent playthroughs. I should give it another shot as Krystal sometime - don't think I ever beat it with her as my main.) Obviously, the visuals don't hold up too well, but that's a non-issue for retro gamers like us.

@Wheels617

Atari Jaguar is awesome btw! There's a few games I love on it.

Nba Jam I've never actually played on Jaguar. But Tempest 2000 is fun, Alien vs. Predator isn't perfect but it's a must have if you own a Jaguar. There are a few games like AVP that aren't complete without controller overlays (AVP is the only one I know of that had 3 individual overlays) and there are some semi rare games that were released years after the Jaguar was discontinued that can be pretty pricey. But it's a good system overall, you might hate some of the games but some you might love and they are almost all original. Originally Rayman came out on the Jaguar and it has a secret mini game that's only in the jaguar version.

My favorite jaguar games are

Alien vs Predator
Ultra Vortek
Doom (lol it's the same as everywhere else probably but I still love this version)
Val d'isere ski and snowboarding
(This is probably a game you won't care about but I always liked it)
Checkered Flag (a lot of people hated this game and I know it's flawed but I love it

Edit: there's more games for sure but I've got to finish going through stuff.

@BloodPuppetX The visuals look pretty solid from what I'm seeing online. I'll burn it off first and decide. My main concern is the gameplay, though it should be recent enough that it's not horribad it could still have old strategy game trappings. Gen IV is pretty hit or miss for me on strategy games. Gen V and up, the gameplay was down pat for the most part.

I love the Jaguar 😊 I love so many different systems and games, usually not the same stuff everybody else is into though 😊

I've been playing games since the 2600 so I'm pretty old school and eclectic.

I'll put it this way, though i didn't like it, it's less like, say, Daisenryaku, and more like a mix up of fire emblem/military madness.

yes I was really just messing with you there. I've never even played the Jaguar, lol...I first played Dark Wizard in the mid 90s, so it was still pretty fresh at the time. Definitely research it before you decide if you want to purchase it. Besides myself, I haven't seen too many people call it their favorite Sega CD game. Of course, there are a lot of SCD games I have never played (Vay, Snatcher, Lunar 2 to name a few). Regardless, it's still a game that I hold in high regard. I got a SCD from bonham2 a few years ago just so I could play it again, lol.

Definitely play the Sega CD version of Lunar 2. It's tl;dr and I've doged about it on this site before probably.

The first Lunar otoh, the Sega CD version is really unpolished so I'd say play the Saturn version if you can handle that or if you need it in English the PS1 version.

^ That was the order I played them in, oddly enough. Probably because I didn't have a Sega CD when I was 6. Weird.

I think both versions are worth playing. It's just if you are going to play one version the Sega CD version of Lunar EB is just a lot better imo. Especially if you care about narrative things and I'm a big reader so I can't help it.

Yeah they really bogged the ps1 version down with a lot of unnecessary junk, i guess so they could justify a remake. Also the music is inferior.

Actually both of these arguments make total sense these days, BUT if I'm not mistaken there is an add on for one of the retron systems that you can play game gear and master system games.

This should be the one. Plus there is at least one Shining Force game on game gear and a couple cute platformers too. Maybe even a Jurassic Park game 😊

Magical Puzzle Popils is an excellent puzzle game that's pretty much a game gear exclusive(unless you're the fool who shelled out 10k for the unreleased turbo version) but really, most game gears just need new caps at worst. /random recommendation

Well I might not bother with an actual game gear system per se but if I had the retron 5 and the game gear adapter that magical puzzle popils is better than columns right? And hopefully WAY deeper yes?

Because I could see myself getting that stuff just for shining force hajya (or whatever it's called) hell I would want a Saturn just for Shining Force 3 but when I had a Saturn it was more expensive used than anything else and I never got that one before I just traded it. Getting back to game gear that would be two games I would want. I'm trying to think what else was on game gear that wasn't pure garbage compared to every other possible version on another system ..... Dammit now I gotta research, because you are right it is cheap enough to collect every game as long as you're cool with cart only.

Definitely better than colums, sure, and practically any other puzzle outside of the tetris's would be deeper than that, but yeah. Never released in america though PAL imports aren't particularly crazy.

Yeah i know, i pretty much bought a saturn just for that too, and shining the holy ark, not so much shining wisdom though hell i got the pseudo thing JUST to play the fan translations on a real saturn, It's great.

Even the manuals are common enough, often you see tons of lots with, like ~10 games and most will have the manuals, it's just the boxes you never see. Sword of Hayja is like ~30 bucks right now, but if you're patient you could probably at least find it in a console/game lot for a decent price.
Recommendations, i guess see if Ninja gaiden is a sane price, not really anything like the console games but it's not bad, and tails adventure is a decent metroid type game.

I might be, why do you not want yours? I wouldn't have cash for a couple weeks even to ship anything honestly.

I also have a game store down the street from me which I would probably trade a bunch of my games to just for a free retron 3 lol. That is, if you're wanting to keep yours. I would only want yours if you were getting rid of it anyways, I do not like pressuring people at all.

Actually I've been working up a list of extra systems to post in a sale thread here for the last couple hours as I do remote work for hte office at the same time, lol.

I've had mine since release, used it about 80 hours, mainly as I didn't have a place to put all the original consoles at that time. Now I've got all my original consoles setup in the living room so I don't need the retron anymore or my Fire Orange N64 or my HiDef NES Top Loader...etc, etc. It's not a pressuring thing at all, just looking to start offloading a bunch of stuff I don't use anymore, systems and games. Just kinda worked out that I was already working on that list of systems (including the Retron 5) for a post here in a bit anyway.

The last time I checked on sword of hajya it was like 15 but maybe that was here on gametz lol. 30 bucks isn't bad anyways. I just gotta stop wasting everything I have on games all the time. It's a sickness. My apartment probably looks like DonLads 😐

Is game gear compatible with foreign game gear games?

I'm not even sure what fan translations you mean. What like the 2 Japanese only shining force 3 games translated into English? Woah. I'm not as up on Saturn and sega cd as you guys are.

Well in that case I'd be interested early next month for sure if no one else makes you a better offer first. And I'm shocked that no one is trying to get your fire orange from you already. I can always throw a bunch of random commons in for you too but most of my retro stuff that's available isn't complete or in perfect shape so money would be easier I'm sure.

Okay that does make sense lol, even as I was playing Ninja Gaiden I saw some mistakes in speech during cutscenes ...... I was like REALLY?

But yeah shining force games always seemed to have plenty of dialogue since there are so many characters you can have.

Now I want to have my Jellyfish and my Jogurt on the same battles 😊

I could do 6-2 no problem once I got the hang of it. On 7-2 I had two spots I'd intentionally die and use as a "checkpoint". No idea how to get past the final few guys without getting hit either. In fact lots of areas in 7-2 I intententionally got hit. Beat it finally though.

I watched a speed run tutorial and some sections, especially with multiple birds, were just ridiculous to pull off. Then I watched my boy Dugongue's 40m "speed run" and he had the real strats on how to get through the game the nice and slow way.

Dankyawww.

I don't think any system has done Sega CD. Closest system to even attempt CD (well, actually no, they flat-out did it with Drac X and Lords of Thunder) was Wii and PCE Super CD.

@DefaultGen their online has always been pretty fudgeed. Still is frankly, trying to do mental gymnastics to figure out whether to sign in with Nintendo Network ID or "Nintendo ID" and which password is associated or being changed when you click change password actually kinda pisses me off.

Ok well fudge everyone involved because SFCD is the far superior experience and people should be able to buy that instead of the Gamegear version of SF Gaiden 2. I mean anyone that really cares can emulate themselves or burn off a cdr but still it sucks when companies make it hard to want to support them.

I do know that PCE CD used to be problematic for emulation, dunno if it still is or not.

I dunno. Is the Metroid (Nintendo Entertainment System) variant any more or less expensive than the original? The same goes for the cartridges with both "five screw" and "three screw" variations. I know people like to rag on how expensive retro video games are. But, c'mon! winking raspberry

My Game Gear is my favorite childhood video game story. All my friends had Game Boys. Game Boy was the crap. For my birthday my parents got me a Game Boy and Kirby's Dream Land (Kirby's Adventure was one of my favorite NES games!). I was thrilled for about 3 minutes. They saw it was black and white and said "Wait, the store had one that was in color!". Despite my "Noooooo!" they thought I was just a kid who wanted what was in front of him. They returned my Game Boy and bought me a Game Gear. I still hate Game Gear to this day.

No one was hating the system really but try playing mortal Kombat on game gear or a few other games that are just ..... Terrible when they were actually decent on other systems and it will frustrate you too. There is some pure unadulterated garbage that came out for it and I can't think of any reason why those games were so terrible compared to every other version other than they just wanted to cash in on the licenses without making a proper game gear port.

Those two topics don't link together because I do NOT regret starting a Jaguar collection. laughing out loud

I probably have 10-15 games now. Half are boxed. I don't have any shocking things to say about my favourite games ... Tempest is by far my most played game. I love that game so much I bought Nuon to play 3000 (haven't found a copy yet).

Lol c'mon now, there are other fun games on jaguar just because that one has a ton of replay value because of its arcade game nature.

My most played is either the cd graphics function on the jaguar CD player which I used to just turn off the lights in the room and listen to music or more likely Ultra Vortek, so even though I've had and sold tempest 2000 and Ultra Vortek and Doom and Alien vs Predator at least once and got them all again later I spent an insane amount of time figuring out all the finishing moves and specials in that game. I figured out everything on my own except one special move one stage fatality and of course those poopality finishing moves 😖 Yeah this was before I knew about gamefaqs though.

So yeah Ultra Vortek or Virtual Light Machine is my most played on jaguar nothing else even comes close.

I'm actually glad to hear that. Did you ever get any of the post production songbird games? I've always wanted Towers 2 on jaguar myself but it's maybe 100 dollars (last I checked anyways) just for that one game so if you were to get a whole complete collection it could get pricey.

I still need Trevor Mcfur in crescent Galaxy, I've never seen it played but the screen shots are really attractive and if it looks that good in action I think I would love it. Every once in awhile I like a good side scrolling shooter.

Since we were talking about GCVideo the other day, I wanted to get an update out to those who were interested in that Plug N Play option from ZeldaXPro. The connector in the 2.0 version is still loose and can move around enough to short out your console. The adapter can move around so that the 12V line with touch an adjacent pin frying both the adapter and your console. This has been confirmed on facebook and multiple other forums. It doesn't have to move much or even be slightly off when you insert it into the port, just a heads up.

So Gunbird 2 is on iOS and Android. I love that more shmups are releasing on mobile, they are perfect for a quickie.

Not to mention how much they cost on retro systems.

One other surprising twist is that the controls are actually REALLY precise and accurate!

I know..I was just thinking this..I don't mind them making those special edition for the people that like them but when there is extra in game stuff in those I don't like that.

I'm not big buying physical copies of after-market games but Towers 2 would be one I wouldn't mind having in my collection.

Trevor Mcfur in Crescent Galaxy ... I actually like this game but I can understand if most do not. In a way I feel like the game made sure it was prime for screen shots in magazines. It's definitely not your traditional schump.

AvP is another one I'd recommend for the sake interest (but it hasn't aged great).

Does anyone here have an original Analogue Nt? @sharif ? Family Feud consistently crashes right at the beginning when you enter your name in. King of the Ring used to crash similar-ishly but a firmware update I did last night fixed that. FF still crashes. I always thought my Nt was just semi-broken and I'm curious if it's just a bug. Let me know if you can test it out.

No AVP on the jaguar has pretty poor frames but I still love it. In a still shot it also looks great though.

Plus it's like a great game so it's almost worth the frustrating graphical weirdness. That would be such a fun game to play if they cleaned it up and rereleased it digitally.

One game I never got to play was the Atari Karts but I have heard it's not very good. I'm still optimistic though. The only game I was like wtf when I played it was club drive I think? Maybe air cars? idk what it was called was really pretty aimless and I honestly had no idea what the point of it was. Another game that was really weird was flip out! I didn't hate it but it was really a shallow puzzle game. I would still buy both of them again and try them again though I didn't give that weird driving game much of a chance. But if I were going to ever get a whole collection going those would be two of the first on my list since they are (or were) fairly cheap. And a complete kasumi ninja would be nice as well.

A set of Doom master floppies is up on Ebay, apparently legit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/322658896676

John Romero sold a plain old, disc only copy of Doom II for $3000 earlier this year. No doubt this is going to go higher. Moneybags PC collectors are starting to rival high end console guys for things like Ultima and Doom.

@Gypsy are you exaggerating about the 100 pics? What game is it? Is it buy it now? Is it complete? Also if you are going to take 100 pics anyways ..... Maybe send them to me too?!?

Lol jk but EBay is just nonsense sometimes. Both of those are perfect examples of why I never even bothered with it, I've wanted to at times but not bad enough for all that.

He has a Twilight Zone pinball machine in his feedback so you know he's a cool dude. His story is that he bought them on Ebay for $1000 in 2000 from a guy who made Doom strategy guide. I don't think he'd stake the reputation of his website (MajorGeeks) on a counterfeit item for a couple thousand bucks. People in the big box PC Facebook group are waiting to see if John Romero can provide any info though.

For the lulz, most of their message.

-the back and sides of the slipcover
-the back, sides and top of the red "Genesis" box
-the back of the manual
-close-up shots of the front and back of the cartridge
-close-up shot of the top of the cartridge label

Also, is there any writing or tears on anything?

Just completely not worth my time for $20 shipped (or less if they were gonna send an offer).

I think they must be either gifting it adding it to their forever collection OR most likely they know someone who has been looking for a pretty minty copy of this game and they're going to resell it for 100 bucks.

There are games I would like complete and minty that I would pay more for that most people wouldn't even want. I'm not a true collector though, so usually I just want to actually play a game and keep it for memories and maybe play again later.

You know what might be better than the systems (especially since sega Nintendo Atari and Sony have so many different systems) in the title the actual game maker companies with their older logos, of course Sega, Nintendo and Capcom. Konami, Snk, Data East, Tecmo and the list goes on Midway. There's so many.

Plus you guys always talk about Working Designs and a few others and I know at least one person besides me would want Hal, and I would want Hudson soft. Maybe that would be a nice change for awhile. And it wouldn't be so bad because you could still have Nintendo and Sega right there in front of everything else.

I don't have a fancy streaming setup but I timed myself playing through Ninja Gaiden for a second time and it took 53:10. This game is fudging phenomenal man. It's my favorite NES game that doesn't start with "Super Mario Bros". I can't believe I've never given it a serious shot before. Two things to come of this: I'm officially a better NG player than Dugongue and now I can say "I can beat Ninja Gaiden" rather than "I have beaten Ninja Gaiden". Cool.

And you are right this isn't perfect at all but it's so good and so ambitious for its time I've always loved this game too. I actually paid 15 dollars for this in an auction knowing no one would outbid me for it. I'm glad you guys started talking about it too otherwise I wouldn't have tried to get my nes working again to play it.

Also my phone lags a ton on the speed run site what exactly is Dugongues time on Ninja Gaiden? I wanna see if everyone on this board that has Ninja Gaiden can beat his time too. I feel like a troll even posting that last sentence lol.

Dugongue has 1h 10m 50s. My goal for today was under 2 hours, The easiest time saver for me now would be not getting sent back to 6-1 so many times. I died on Jaquio #3, which I could have definitely avoided. I don't mind looking up strategies for ridiculous sections, I spent my childhood buried in Nintendo Power. There's one group of enemies I won't name that seems super technical and impossible and the mostly-ideal strategy is to just hold the d-pad, take two hits, and walk through them. I definitely would have never figured that one out on my own. The "hard part" of 6-2 is a piece of cake when you know how to do it too. But by all means, bash your head against the wall smile

I couldn't even read that paragraph sir! I don't mind figuring it out on my own honestly. But yeah I keep going back to 6-1 too but I've been playing it very casually since I really almost don't want it to end. I know you know that feeling in a game. Also I've been doing other stuff in between anyways. So I get out of the zone a little.

But you are right the platforming is totally comparable to super Mario bros on Nes but the slippery controls on the first SMB makes ninja Gaiden more fun by far. I wish castlevania played this tight but I guess that's part of its charm too. Hard as hell because you're character doesn't move fast enough ..... At least with jumps.

Man you guys would hate the original Hudsons Adventure Island, if you think this is a challenge. I still love that game and I beat it a million years ago but I don't know if I could today. The perfect timing on the jumps if you have no weapon will give you an ulcer lol.

It probably is but I try to avoid paying retail for games where I know they will really drop. Unless I feel the game needs my support, and this one definitely doesn't. It helps make up for games I want to buy that basically don't drop in price like the English language SRW games on PS4.

Do people stream RPGs? I feel like they are boring enough as is with all their slow ass starts...and level grinding.

On the other hand, outside of retro shooters and platformers, I think horror games should be pretty awesome to stream.

Uh yeah I already told you about Buddhas quest on the psp game WTF work time fun. That is a nonstop never ending fight though. It's a mini rpg though. It can be beat in under an hour if you know your stats though. And get a super lucky run.

You have to defeat 100 Buddha dolls on one life bar. My record is over 200 I know I did it once and I think I did it twice.

So it's only slow and boring because my friend and I stopped during the live videos to talk about stats and when we played the Japanese version I needed his help translating the items. So that one we slowed down a lot too. But there was no actual talking during the videos it's just the game music and sound effects. I'll bet Dugongue has no speed run time on that game.

Also if you're serious about streaming an rpg may I suggest something that is challenging for most people?

Say either Genesis Shining Force game? I think people would be more engaged if it's something they have a hard time beating in the real. There's so many strategies you can use in that game and the fighting graphics are some of my personal favorites from any RPGs other that say Gladius on Xbox lol. I just love that Danaerys looking badass barbarian girl in Gladius ..... Oh Ursula 😍

I think besides the Disgaea 5 LE that I got before I had a system, Yakuza 0 is the most I've acquired a PS4 game at because I knew I was gonna play it. Those SRW games are gonna be rough.

I'd just want JP21 scart cables for everything. I've been debating ordering an XRGB-3 from Micomsoft for a little bit now. Seems like 2/2plus don't end for that much less on eBay compared to what I would gain with the XRGB-3, and of course it has the straight line doubling mode (my main planned use for now) which means it is essentially those models as well.

I purchased my Retron 5 near the beginning, probably the first batch considering how tightly it gripped the NES carts. The thing has it's issues sure, but it's not a piece of junk in my opinion. It's meant to be a device of convenience for the masses, not a replacement for those looking for an authentic experience of the real consoles. For me, I used it to save space in our living room and offer a way the whole family could play retro games together. Loved that it supported the original controllers. Loved that it supports save dumps to and from the original cart. Love the translation pack applications. Loved that it worked on over HDMI.

Sure, the pixels aren't perfect, the color is washed out, sound isn't the greatest, etc. Those weren't why I bought it, I have the original consoles for that. There are many types of customers out there and this type of device is for those wanting an easy way to play old games, it does that just fine. The best way for a person to enjoy retro gaming is the way that works for them, plain and simple. Retron, Retro Freak, original console, RetroPi, PC emulation, NT Mini, NES Classic, Steam, digital emulation on newer consoles, etc. It's just like anything else in life, as long as it works for your needs then that's all that matters. The retroarch code in the Retron is a whole 'nother beast of an issue with me though.

Honestly, if I had a place to put a 2nd setup for gaming in my house, I'd never have sold my Retron.

I think it's a weird in between of actual consoles and emulating on a computer. The one thing it has over actual emulation is that it's idiot proof and actually setting up emulators is far from that. And even for someone smart enough, the Retron5 is more convenient. So that's going to be a pretty big deal for a lot of people. It's obviously sold well enough and just not for me.

I also still think how they got started is shady, but I would assume they fixed those legal issues since nothing ever really came of that and it's still being sold. I don't actually know or care enough to look into it, since I wouldn't be buying one anyway. However @FrictionPin if you have relevant and current information on that, I'd be interested enough to read it.

Apparently breaking is what the included controller does. But hey it does at least have slots for real controllers.

Sucks that the build quality on these is so low for $150. Cart slots shouldn't stop working that quickly. Did you buy it new?

My retron 5 broke within 3 months. I bought it new from eBay. Since it was still under warranty(I think 1 year), Hyperkin sent me a "refurbished" one which was really "new", but I sold it not long after getting it. Didn't want to endure the eventual breakdown again.

You know, I was thinking about that when i wrote my post earlier. Not sure I ever really did hear the actual "resolution" to that whole mess, although it may not have been public information if it indeed was handled legally. Regardless, either nothing happened officially or they reached some sort of agreement as the thing is still being sold at retail. I honestly find it impossible to believe that techs with enough knowledge to create the thing didn't understand (or care) to check the open source licensing text.

One of the benefits of being a company like Hyperkin is when you're grifting crap that isn't yours to make a profit, you don't really bother to read the fine print when you snag something. If it's out there and it's free, well, free game.

I would expect, like most retail outlets, since no one operating a GNU operation has the legal team to force a C&D/bring up a lawsuit, it's much more likely that Hyperkin gave anyone objecting the middle finger and carried on, as they will continue to do in the future. Honestly this was a huge step forward for them, as stealing emulators is much less costly than having to hack together crapty cloneware.

Their care and attention to detail is obvious simply in the elegant six-month lifespans of the majority of their cartridge slots.

Nintendo Wii with component already looks great with GC games. Unless you MUST play GBA/GB/GBC games on your GC, I don't think it's worth the effort.

If they would control the Wii menu I would be set but GC controllers do not. Once you get the Homebrew channel you are all set though as they do work there. I am currently playing Metroid Prime using this method and it works very well. But I already had purchased a modded Gamecube before i knew much about this. I will probably mess around with the Game Cube and if it is too cumbersome I will just put it on ebay or here.

If you have a wii with the homebrew channel you can use Nintendont to play it. It has support for the triforce arcade board.

You can play the first two games on a Wii or Wii U with Nintendont. They're crappy games though. Simple tracks and extreme rubber band AI. I have no idea what possesses anyone to actually own those games because I think they're zero fun to play over and over, compared to the console games anyway.

I bought a Component cable back in the day for like 50 bucks and I thought that was high. Now the things are almost 300 bucks. It is easier to buy a modded gamecube with hdmi then spend that kind of money.

I was away during his stint and never really got the pleasure but Donlad PM'ed me a couple weeks ago. Telling me to help him (not asking) with posting images and links on his bio page I believe. Only reason I knew the name was because someone linked me to his first post when I returned telling me what I'd missed. That's what my SL told me but I can't confirm it. I don't know how she got that since she's at the hospital.

I told myself I was not going to get into buying anime again, its a hole I just cant go down, but that is one Id be tempted on I love it so much. much easier to consume anime without buying it now that hulu/crunchyroll/online services have such a nice selection.

ive started fairy tail and really like it, very naruto but with magic.
