new Thread Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

I never understood the hate for GH/RB. Ok, I kind of get it, since it was adopted by non-gamers and got super popular, but at its core it's just a rhythm game, which is a genre I really enjoy. Plus I get to sing. I see no downside here.

I chalk instrument-based music and rhythm video games right up there with motion controls and virtual reality. I'm sure they're fun distractions and all. But, they just branch off too far from the primal video game experience. Give me a television (or monitor or handheld), give me a controller (or keyboard 'n' mouse or handheld), and let me, more or less, interact with this thing the same way I've been doin' since the '80s. Honestly, it's not that I hate the other stuff; it's just that I don't like it as much as the real deal. smile

So it's the peripherals, I can understand that. They're actually an enormous hassle. I've had mountains more fun with RB than with any of the other flash in the pan fads though.

Man, rhythm games are just about as pure a gaming experience as you can get. See note, press button. The difficulty ramps up as far as you need it to and there's always a harder chart for you to strive to beat. Movie-games like Uncharted 4 are the ones branching off that primal video game experience.

Give a music 'n' rhythm video game that I can play with a Super Nintendo controller and we'll talk. 'Til then, it's just more of a gimmick than anything else. If I want to play the guitar, then I'll go to my bedroom and break out my actual guitar. To me, it's like playing a video game where the control setup is the steering wheel and dashboard to a mundane '91 Honda Accord. I mean, sure, it can be done; but, what's the point?! surprise

I dunno...maybe this particular genre just escapes me 'cause I've never had any real aspirations to be a rock 'n' roll god. cool smile

I like playing the drums in RB. It improves my rhythm.

Anyway, yea plastic instruments are cumbersome but they can be fun, especially if you get the full band playing.

Practicing on real instruments is so tedious winking raspberry

It's ok, you can admit you're too good for Rock Band, and that Rock Band fans are inferior. It's all good, it won't take away from my enjoyment.

I think you're missing the point of the guitar. It's not to actually simulate playing the guitar, they're entirely different and incompatible things. If anything playing Rock Band guitar is closer to playing the piano, since you're pressing down on buttons with both hands. But turn that guitar into a controller with large buttons and you get Beatmania (or Pop'n Music or whatever is your preference), which is highly respected and takes insane skill. You really seem to be hung up on the crap peripheral.

Also I won't let anyone crap on rhythm games because PaRappa the Rapper.

I think you may've hit the proverbial nail on its proverbial head. I love PaRappa the Rapper (PlayStation) because it's a challenging, fun, and whimsical video game. I also love Katamari Damacy (PlayStation 2) because it's a challenging, fun, and whimsical video game. While they're both very different genres, neither of 'em use awkward, exaggerated, or expensive peripherals: just a plain 'ol controller. Granted, the latter incorporates an analog function; but, that's definitely a more natural evolution of the primal video game controller. cool grin

Yeah! I played the heck outta Samba de Amigo (Dreamcast) back in the day and it looks very similar to the one pictured above. Sure, there was the option to play it using those freakin' maracas with the goofy mat and sensor perimeter combo. But, I had just as much fun, if not more, playing it with a stock Sega Dreamcast controller. I may very well be in the minority; but -- damn it all! -- when it comes to controllers, "Keep it simple, stupid!" raspberry

Asian English releases are a wonderful thing. I never thought we'd see any non-OG title (like V) in English.

For those unfamiliar, these have mecha from lots of various anime in them making them a licensing nightmare in the US.

Yeah lol. I played through EF. Completely different from an actual SRW game though.

That other game is made by the same company but a different series. SRW games are full blown strategy games. Turn based combat on a grid, buy parts and upgrades for your mechs in between missions, the works.

I personally play actual electric guitar and I have been for 20+ years so I'm not a big fan of the guitar hero guitars but at the same time I personally love anything that gets casual people into music, especially rock. But I absolutely love Dance Dance revolution and any and almost all Kinect games because they are fun and they get people interested in video games that don't want to JUST sit there. It's all about having fun at the end of the day really, there's a lot of kids that would talk trash if they played a 2600 today too so it's all the same thing really.
