new Thread Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Wait, have you not ever finished Castlevania on the Nes? Actually I've already noticed two other people mention they hadn't ..... 😞

Which reminds me there was an arcade version of Castlevania totally different from the Nes version much like Ninja Gaiden and how it was also totally different. Has anyone played the arcade version of Castlevania? I was wondering what people's thoughts were of this game? I barely remember it but I remember thinking this is nothing like the home version either. Maybe someone knows of an emulation somewhere of it?

I'm in that list. I got pretty far once but never finished it up I don't think. CV1-3 I haven't done a full clear on, and if I did 3 it was with states so the crap don't count

11:32.

Donanghue either can't beat it or isn't in the top 101, so that doesn't bode well for bad players like me. Actually it looks like all his "runs" might be gone? frown

Not all of Dugongue's runs are gone, but some are? Not not actually sure what happened there.

Kmac is the god of NES Castlevania. He's all but retired from speedrunning, but he come back whenever some beats this record and crush it and go back into retirement.

11:32 is probably not beatable by anyone here, the game is actually physically shorter than ninja Gaiden but it's also got some serious luck involved to not just die or get trapped in a bosses hit pattern.

I guess the cool thing about playing these two games back to back for us is that they play similarly in a lot of ways. The main drawback from Castlevania however is the fact that in the first one the jumping mechanics will literally screw you over because it controls very stiff and once you jump there is no fancy moving around in the air and controlling it like ninja Gaiden or super Mario. Once you commit to the jump you're locked in as your final answer. Even if some random enemy spawns at the exact wrong moment you're screwed.

Still this game is easier than the first adventure island to beat (unless you can keep your weapons in adventure island in the later levels without EVER dying then it's kinda easy).

I think a half hour is probably doable guys but even if more than one of us can finish in under an hour I'd say that's a pretty serious accomplishment.

Wow thats not as bad as I thought, what's the 101 ranked players speedrun time?

Also again I'm not going to watch that video until I finish it on my own, unlike ninja Gaiden I had some of the more important tips still in my mind like exactly which weapons are best against which bosses.

Also 10 minutes just against Dracula?!? He's not even the hardest boss he's almost a freebie compared to the hardest boss but I guess with the right sub weapon (and enough hearts saved up) even that boss will fall quickly.

There's this guy on YouTube who has a literal mountain of original arcade 'boards. I'm always so impressed when I see some of the pieces in his collection. Anyhow, he's got a video of himself playing the Castlevania arcade game, Haunted Castle (Arcade), shown here. Now, this actually isn't the first Castlevania title to be released in the arcades. Technically, that honor goes to Castlevania ( Nintendo PlayChoice-10), shown here. smile

Holy guacamole nice sir! Thank you for those videos, I remember play choice 10 which was an amazing and forward thinking idea. If you couldn't afford it at home yet they wanted you to get a taste of it in the arcade so you would need it at home. And the other original Castlevania in the arcade had some decent graphics but damn if it doesn't totally remind me of Altered Beast and Rastan as well the way it plays there.

Nice!

Beating the game from start to finish as quickly as possible is basically how I understand it myself.

There are (I believe) self imposed rules and even official rules to this as well and I think it varies by game but I'm not a professional speed runner myself I just like classic games and am fairly interested in these games again now that I know about this.

I haven't watched a professional speed run start to finish either mostly because I like discovering strategies on my own now, but even knowing these strategies won't help you with the learning curve on certain classics you still have to play very proficiently to pass a game like ninja Gaiden or Castlevania.

Why aren't you playing the original nes version? You know you're going to give yourself a heart attack trying to beat it without a real controller right?

Also you know that's the wrong weapon right? Unless you're only referring to the the small medusas then I guess it's okay.

Nah, I just wailed on her with holy water, worked better than the clock because I just held up and spammed attack. Had the III mark so it was using up almost no hearts. Didn't move an inch, fight was over almost immediately.

Why am I not playing on a Nintendo? Well, uhm. I'm not home.

"Professional" speedrunning isn't really a thing as such. Basically just beat the game as fast as you can without cheating. There are communities around certain games, they usually have a discord server, and speedrun.com is a good resource as well. I can answer specific questions around NES speedrunning since I've been around it for a few years now.

Well same here but I still think you got me beat by a lot since you play your owned games to pass them more than I ever do. Some games I still have yet to even play ..... But I did recently get a copy of resident evil operation raccoon city for 360 again and I'll be damned if I don't give it a real shot this time. Lol hopefully it's AS terrible as people say.

It used to help me want to play games when there were achievements for 360 but now that I haven't even ponied up money to get internet at the casa achievements aren't even link able on my 360 and Xbox One and there's a ton of achievements you have to play online to get.

I guess I needed incentives to play again lol. Maybe I'm not a true gamer anymore.

I didn't mean to imply people were getting paid to speed run more like they take it seriously. And are capable of times that are only possible if you literally "work" at it.

I do have some questions are there any speed runs for the mini games in Work time fun for the psp that you know of? Like I may have mentioned before it's pretty obscure but I may have a title in that game that I may be the only American player to have ever gotten. So maybe there is an alternate community for this game too? Idk it's a reach I know but that one mini game I may be one of the best in the world at idk.

I have another question what's the next big speed run project you want to take on besides Castlevania and are there any games you feel you have a legitimate shot to rank number one at speed running in?

I don't know that I've ever heard of a speedrun of WTF. You might want to ask the speedrun subreddit (warning: it's a little cancer-y in there) or the speedrun.com forums. It's not listed as a game in speedrun.com so who knows.

I don't know if I'm actually going to grind for a good time in Castlevania, it's a really tough game speed-wise, but after I get a time I'm happy with in Barbie, I'm going to go for sub-10 in Barbie Game Girl, because I'm a man of my word. Then I have to go back to Mario Tennis GBC because someone found a new strat and I want to try it. After that it'll probably be Crystal Warriors for the Game Gear. Of all those, Mario Tennis is probably the one I have best shot at for record.

It's easy to get caught up with the competition of speedrunning. I dont think i enjoy attempting to speed run though.

Too much time commitment and repetition, once finished I like to move to the next game, there is always a huge back log to get through.

I like the idea of thead-wide "local" speedrunning. I didn't ever make the "cut" for Ninja Gaiden which I may run again but it does take some dedication and setting time aside to do it, NG was kind of a boredom thing. Honestly I'm probably just going to focus on finishing Castlevania and maybe we can compare finish times, and if some competition springs up from that, that's fine.

Thanks for all the good advice sir!

And yeah I think you may have a serious shot at some of those games, I know they probably aren't as high profile so there's less of a chance that people have grinded them out as much.

And yeah I keep getting advice about checking Reddit and I plan to but the format isn't to my liking. Also if by cancer-y you mean trump supporters I would literally not be able to deal, but if it's just run of the mill internet nerds trash talking me I could probably hang.

It's definitely the latter, you're fine. Some people take getting world records WAY too seriously.

That SNES fighting game homebrew dropped in price again to $20 Prime shipped. It seems like they vastly overestimated the market for SNES games. Most homebrew sell in the 10s. I wonder if they printed 1000s.

It might be steadily decreasing in price until someone actually buys them. I'm in at $10... which should take a week at this rate.

I've got a question that I've been thinking about for awhile now. Has any home video game console, released exclusively in and for Japan, ever been considered a commercial success? The best I can come up with off the top of my head is the Sharp X68000 (X68000), as seen here. But, I don't really know how many were sold or if it was even considered a commercial success at the time. frown
