The first episode I'm part of is a short personal intro to me, but I'll be in with Johnny and Kat talking more specific video game collecting topics in the weeks to come. It's a well established podcast with dozens of episodes already, so check out the back episodes too. Some topics covered have been rare vs. expensive games, repros, homebrew, and pirates, collecting sets for current systems, and impact of Nintendo's mini consoles on collectors.

Or if none of that collecting stuff interests you, still listen to Johnny's story about his first Super Nintendo, which listens like an audiobook. It's one of my favorite podcasts I've ever heard: Part 1, Part 2.

Been listening most of the day today. Johnny kinda sounds like a younger John Cusack when he's "in script" in his head. And they're both named John, I SMELL CONSPIRACY.

Cool podcast.

Yeah I've been listening off and on to various ones throughout the day. Johnny seems like an overall good dude and has reasonable takes. Even when I disagree with something I can respect that he explained his stance/reasoning.

My favorite thing about Johnny is the voice he uses when he's describing a dumb counter-opinion. Makes my day every time.

Sweet. Me and Johnny have differing opinions on a lot of things based on conversations we've had. I totally agree that N64 is a garbage console for garbage people though.

Yeah. If you collect all the games for it, you'll realize how small and uninteresting the console is as a whole when you stop looking at the same 20 top tier games everyone, including me, loves. SM64 and OOT are my two favorite games ever, but N64 as a whole is still the worst.

Can't even stand the Zeldas on N64 with the very much superior 3DS incarnations out now. Long as you can get around the small screen...

Like, I think my list of games I'd still own an N64 for is Mischief Makers, Super Mario 64, Bomberman Hero and uh, maybe Paper Mario, Quest 64 if I can ever find a working memory card for it... Waverace? Really it honestly

I'm like 50% sure funtastic N64s need a fancier, specific mod from an Australian shop. Swap the motherboard with an early model.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised at all the Nintendo 64 bashing that's been goin' on here. Granted, I didn't own one back in the day 'cause I was all about that import Sega Saturn scene. But, I've definitely come to appreciate the last home video game console that utilized a cartridge format. While I know they're certainly not all winners; it's still got a solid library of very good titles. Here's twenty-five of my favorites:

Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh (Nintendo 64)
Bomberman 64 -- 2001 Japanese Version (Nintendo 64)
Bust-A-Move 2: Arcade Edition (Nintendo 64)
Conker's Bad Fur Day (Nintendo 64)
Dr. Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
Goemon's Great Adventure (Nintendo 64)
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (Nintendo 64)
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Nintendo 64)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)
Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo 64)
Mega Man 64 (Nintendo 64)
Mischief Makers (Nintendo 64)
Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon (Nintendo 64)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Nintendo 64)
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber (Nintendo 64)
Paper Mario (Nintendo 64)
Pokemon Puzzle League (Nintendo 64)
Rampage World Tour (Nintendo 64)
Sin and Punishment (Nintendo 64)
Star Fox 64 (Nintendo 64)
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (Nintendo 64)
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (Nintendo 64)
Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo 64)
Yoshi's Story (Nintendo 64)

Personally, I think that, if the Nintendo 64 had been more of a failure, it would be more loved by our current community. I don't really have more than a hunch to go on that. But, seeing as how some people here get so damn wet over the Sega 32X and the CD-i (Compact Disc Interactive), it just makes me wonder. ?

You can pull out a list of top games for almost any console (sorry 32X). For the really great consoles like PS2 or SNES you can make a list of the top shooters, the top RPGs, top platformers, top fighting games, and top horror games. There are genres on N64 where you couldn't even make a list of 5 games, let alone the top 5 games. You could almost do a top 100 racing games and the console only has 300 games.

I wouldn't want N64 to die in a fire like Dreamcast, it's not that bad, it's pretty lacking compared to most other big consoles though.

Hey, now! My love for the Sega Saturn needs no defense. Of course I know that Bust-A-Move 3 (Saturn) is -- hands down -- a better video game than Bust-A-Move 2: Arcade Edition (Nintendo 64). But, that doesn't mean the Nintendo 64 port is a bad game. Just because apple cider is better than apple juice doesn't mean that apple juice is bad; it just means there's something else out there that's similar and superior to it. smile

I only remember mostly playing Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi at a friend's house. I've since played like half the good Dreamcast games on PS1, Gamecube, Xbox, PC, PSP, iOS, arcade, or 360 and wonder why anyone would go back to that controller as their preferred way of playing those games.

Shenmue II is strictly worse on Xbox. I'd argue for others but it would be pointless. I like the controller and you hate it. I certainly have way more hours on Dreamcast than N64.

I can make a Top 5 for pretty much every genre except for Puzzler on Dreamcast, that was a good ole system, but the problem is trying to extend it to Top 10. I think Playstation, PS2, NES, SNES, Genesis and PC Engine are about the only ones I could make extensive lists that expand the "You want this" list any further than 25 spaces without having to admit that I'm fudging some or all of the lists. Honestly most of the systems new and old are chock full of absolute crap. PC has the benefits of existing forever so I'll skip that one

Puzzle is great too though, I could easily make a top 5. Mr. Driller, Puyo Puyo Fever, Puyo Puyo 4, Puzzle Bobble 4, Chu Chu Rocket. Honestly I could keep going too, but I really like puzzle games. I'm not delusional enough to compare the library to PS1/2, SNES, Genesis or PCE but I think I could get to 10 in some genres. Fighters and shooters easily (these are THE reason I've never purged out Dreamcast completely even bitd). Not really RPG of course, especially if you only play US released games, there is next to nothing of any quality there except Skies and Lodoss War. Then there are some sweet goofy games like Jet Set and Napple Tale.

And I mean, @DefaultGen is right, you can play a lot of the library elsewhere. I can't argue that. I'll take VGA and the Dreamcast controller for most of them. And as for fighters, my stick is already compatible with Dreamcast so I can't see ever switching those.

Completely agree that all consoles are full of crap games, there is a LOT of crap out there.

I used to be very concerned with playing the best versions of games and games you can only play on certain consoles. Since everything on Dreamcast is a port or got ported elsewhere, it snowballed out of control into a semi-irrational hate of Dreamcast that I still have today.

I don't really like fighting games. I respect them for the precision and skill involved, they're just not my jam. That makes it easy to almost totally ignore Neo Geo too. Beat 'em ups, on the other hand, are a total dumpster genre, to give an example of a genre that is terrible vs. one I just don't play.

@DefaultGen, NG showed up on your top 3? Was last month the first time you've beaten it? Or were you just downplaying your expertise?

Last month was the first time I actually beat it. Contra is the only game I could really think of that might compete with it in a top 3. I thought NG was incredible. Basically the perfect action game.

Nice. Since I played NG2 in my childhood, I have more nostalgia for it than NG1, but they are almost the same game. Shadow clones were just so cool to me back then.

Episode #74 is up on meaningless marketing words used in online sales. We go over words like rare, mint, authentic, and as-is used by adults in pet and smoke free homes across the country.

I'll have to listen to why you think "Authentic" is bad, considering the last two NES Classics I've purchased have been fake as crap. That's precisely the word I'll be using to sell my next (hopefully actual!) system.

I think authentic is good, Johnny disagreed. The type of person to use the word authentic probably knows what he's doing, and knows that the people buying his games will just file claims if they're fake. It's like how "ships in a box" signals to me that this seller isn't clueless about how the damn world works.

I use random keywords to fill up the rest of the Name field. RARE, SHMUP, WORKING DESIGNS, CAPCOM, ULTRA RARE!

Authentic is good, Genuine, OEM. I always make sure my Sega CD and Saturn listings say they will be properly shipped in a box.

I also split my condition ratings when it comes to $100+ games, Game/Manual/Case, and I detail specifically where the defects are.

Though lately I've been lazy and just list everything as good and tell them to check the damn pics.

@DefaultGen Yeah, nothing bothers me more as a PC collector than when contents in the game box are rattling around loose.

I can't believe anyone has the time to list anything as anyone else. I only bother for forums because forum people are picky. Ebay people are just crazy. They'll buy without looking at pictures or description, so why go through the effort?
