new Thread Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is brand:::PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

This is another surprise. I wonder if it's a widespread thing, people just haven't beaten their favorite games...

List one game that you consider one of your favorite games of all time that you HAVEN'T beaten.

Also, I think the stark realization is sinking in...I no longer enjoy playing JRPGs...

I used to play for the storyline...but now I feel like I'd rather just play anything that doesn't make me fall asleep.

Most stories are hackneyed plots with nothing behind it. Combat is mostly repetitive grinding that artificially extends play time. Dialogue is empty shell of what the writers think a player of 10-15 year old would...probably enjoy.

Am I wrong? Am I being too dark and negative here?

@tonymack21 help me! Do I just stop playing older RPGs and play WIII and P5 instead?

If you haven't played Koudelka yet you should. I think it would be different enough for you to enjoy ..... Somewhat. There is the dungeon crawling/grinding but the enemies are unique and grotesque. Also it's a very adult themed game. It's not meant for kids. But this is only if you haven't played it enough to know you did or didn't like it already.

It's not that the games are any less good (although sometimes it can be) it's just getting older and more jaded is bound to happen. Sometimes the escapism and fantasy of it just start to disappear. Also real life starts to take away from enjoying the little things as well. I would say just come back to these games when you start to miss them. I can go for weeks without playing certain games and jump right back in without missing a beat. Months in the case of Tony Hawk games. Years in the case of classic Nes platformers and other classics. Sometimes all it takes is a break.

Earthbound is another one for me. Other legendary gems like Xenogears, probably a few more I could list.

You can't be wrong about how you feel. I don't think I'll ever be tired of jRPGs. And I hope I don't because I have so many on my play list. Take a break for a few months. And think of one of the best jRPGs out there that you have yet to play. And play that game next. If you only have taste for the best of the best. Look at the bright side, you'll have a much smaller back log but still get to enjoy the best RPGs ever made!

Can't think of anything. When I really like something I hunker down and beat it. Nexzr took awhile though and if this question was asked at a different time that would have been my answer.

Video game plots are 99% for 12 year olds. When the characters are likeable I consider it a win. I feel similarly about most anime, lol.

Persona 5 seems like the best JRPG in awhile so def try that and if you don't like it never touch a JRPG again.

Maybe I just need to replay Lunars to restore my faith with JRPGs.

Or maybe it's the portable RPGs that are breaking me down.

In the past month or so I tried: Avalon Code, My World My Way, Stranger of Sword City...all are different in their own way.

This year I tried replaying a few older hits like Vanguard Bandits and Arc the Lad(I still want to try to replay this) and didn't really want to continue after a few hours.

@Lunar you really can't go wrong with the Lunars. I played through Lunar EB on Sega CD somewhat recently and loved it. Also Arc 2 within the last few years, really liked that one. I don't play a ton of JRPGs anymore. Mostly for the reasons you brought up earlier but sometimes I do get into one like Trails of Cold Steel for w/e reason.

@Lunar just look at my collection and wanted list for good RPGs to play smiley:::smile

Or just play one of the best of all time if you haven't played it in a long long time. Chrono Trigger, Lunar, Phantasy Star IV, FInal Fantasy VI, Earthbound, Shadow Hearts Covenant.

Lunar

Another issue with RPGs is the length. I was replaying Chrono Trigger couple years ago on Vita, and after like 15 hours, I lost interest for like a few months. It's hard to jump back after that.

I really want to finish an RPG I haven't beaten before, that's prob a good goal to finish before the end of the year.

Fudging crap, Facebook. Someone posts up Wind Waker GC for $24, I'm like "I'm interested in buying." last night. This morning he's like "I'm available today?" I'm like "Cool, let's meet up in the middle either here, or I can go as far east as here, just need to hop on a bus and hit up an ATM at either spot and I'm good"

25 minutes later he's like "Oh you can drive somewhere?"

If that's as clear as you can be and as much attention as you can pay to the conversation I'll just skip this one

Supposedly they're a resident at IU Health, so he can't be completely tardo, right?

He said he might be able to drive to me, so I gave him one more shot, gave him a nearby meet-up where I can hit up an ATM and can do the deal and told him to give me an hour notice since he went dead when I asked if that was okay.

But yes, if he doesn't message me in 15 minutes saying "OK, BE THERE IN 10" I'll take you up on that, definitely. I'll just have you sit on it for half a month and mail it out mid-November (I can still pay soon as I get RVM paid up, working on that now actually). Thanks, @Gypsy !

if you arent enjoying the old ones, then WIII and P5 are what you need. they both start a little slow, so give them time to take off. but once they do.. wow. P5 is definitely one of the better JRPGS in years, it does so many things that all jrpgs need to start doing. it has a button to heal outside of combat, without going into menus. it has a fast forward button to speed up combat if all you are going to do just basic attacks for the next couple turns.

i find it a harder to go back to the older ones now too, there are a few that are so good i can still play them. shadow hearts, FF7-10, dragon quest 8, radiata stories are a couple that come to mind.

repetitive combat is definitely a thing in the older games, but it never really gets old in the witcher especially, as you need to employ different abilities and strategies for different monsters.

for the witcher definitely definitely definitely watch the lore series on Shoddycast on youtube and then Treesicles the story you never knew. great primers for what happened in the old games and you can then enjoy witcher 3 so much more.

tokyo xanadu ex+ is another im looking forward to at the first of december, its Falcom's take on persona from what it looks like, so that should be good.

Dragon Quest 11 looks really good too.

also check out the Trails in sky/trails of cold steel stuff, i havent played them all myself yet but ive heard they are great and put the world building and writing of other games to shame. trails in the sky 1 and 2 are on psp (so that means shield ...) and trails 3rd is on pc. cold steel id wait apparetly there are ps4 ports coming to go along with part 3 of that one on ps4.

I don't think I've played through a DQ game w/o experience modifier cheats, so this will be a new experience. laughing out loud

lol, i dont know i would even consider something cheating if all it does is save grinding time, as thats something you COULD do on your own. aint got time for that anymore though.

what grinding in games has done for me is made me start accepting i will just be playing the main quest and most side missions in games and not beating the optional stuff in some games like superbosses etc that you have to be maxed or close to have a prayer. dragon quest 8 for example i got to darksteel dragon and that was it. that one is as much RNG luck as anything but you get the picture

i also think about replaying the mass effect trilogy someday, and someday i probably will, but ive already done that three times and dont know i'll ever have time again lol.

I think Miitopia is a nice light-hearted game for people burned out on more "serious" RPGs. But YMMV because not everyone likes Miis.

@tonymack21 I've only played them once and it was awhile ago. I wish Andromeda was good. :(

i wish it was a lot better for sure, it doesnt live up to the shepherd trilogy, which was gonna be a tall order. ive heard the patches help a lot, i'll go back to it eventually. my disappointment of the year for sure.
