new Thread Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is brand:::PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Mega Man X

HD film content looks really damn good on CRTs. I'd have to spend a crap ton of money on an LCD to get well, still not as good black levels. I watched the Cowboy Bebop brand:::Blu-Ray that made its way around from DD to Lunar to myself on that LaCie Electron 22blue IV I got awhile back and it was just fantastic. Been watching 08 MS Team on it too.

LCDs are not without their benefits though and I would love to get a quality 4k OLED if they get cheaper.

This is another surprise. I wonder if it's a widespread thing, people just haven't beaten their favorite games...

List one game that you consider one of your favorite games of all time that you HAVEN'T beaten.

Also, I think the stark realization is sinking in...I no longer enjoy playing JRPGs...

I used to play for the storyline...but now I feel like I'd rather just play anything that doesn't make me fall asleep.

Most stories are hackneyed plots with nothing behind it. Combat is mostly repetitive grinding that artificially extends play time. Dialogue is empty shell of what the writers think a player of 10-15 year old would...probably enjoy.

Am I wrong? Am I being too dark and negative here?

@tonymack21 help me! Do I just stop playing older RPGs and play WIII and P5 instead?

If you haven't played Koudelka yet you should. I think it would be different enough for you to enjoy ..... Somewhat. There is the dungeon crawling/grinding but the enemies are unique and grotesque. Also it's a very adult themed game. It's not meant for kids. But this is only if you haven't played it enough to know you did or didn't like it already.

It's not that the games are any less good (although sometimes it can be) it's just getting older and more jaded is bound to happen. Sometimes the escapism and fantasy of it just start to disappear. Also real life starts to take away from enjoying the little things as well. I would say just come back to these games when you start to miss them. I can go for weeks without playing certain games and jump right back in without missing a beat. Months in the case of Tony Hawk games. Years in the case of classic Nes platformers and other classics. Sometimes all it takes is a break.

You can't be wrong about how you feel. I don't think I'll ever be tired of jRPGs. And I hope I don't because I have so many on my play list. Take a break for a few months. And think of one of the best jRPGs out there that you have yet to play. And play that game next. If you only have taste for the best of the best. Look at the bright side, you'll have a much smaller back log but still get to enjoy the best RPGs ever made!

Can't think of anything. When I really like something I hunker down and beat it. Nexzr took awhile though and if this question was asked at a different time that would have been my answer.

Video game plots are 99% for 12 year olds. When the characters are likeable I consider it a win. I feel similarly about most anime, lol.

Persona 5 seems like the best JRPG in awhile so def try that and if you don't like it never touch a JRPG again.

Maybe I just need to replay Lunars to restore my faith with JRPGs.

Or maybe it's the portable RPGs that are breaking me down.

In the past month or so I tried: Avalon Code, My World My Way, Stranger of Sword City...all are different in their own way.

This year I tried replaying a few older hits like Vanguard Bandits and Arc the Lad(I still want to try to replay this) and didn't really want to continue after a few hours.

@Lunar you really can't go wrong with the Lunars. I played through Lunar EB on Sega CD somewhat recently and loved it. Also Arc 2 within the last few years, really liked that one. I don't play a ton of JRPGs anymore. Mostly for the reasons you brought up earlier but sometimes I do get into one like Trails of Cold Steel for w/e reason.

@Lunar just look at my collection and wanted list for good RPGs to play smiley:::smile

Or just play one of the best of all time if you haven't played it in a long long time. Chrono Trigger, Lunar, Phantasy Star IV, FInal Fantasy VI, Earthbound, Shadow Hearts Covenant.

Another issue with RPGs is the length. I was replaying Chrono Trigger couple years ago on Vita, and after like 15 hours, I lost interest for like a few months. It's hard to jump back after that.

I really want to finish an RPG I haven't beaten before, that's prob a good goal to finish before the end of the year.

Fudging crap, Facebook. Someone posts up Wind Waker GC for $24, I'm like "I'm interested in buying." last night. This morning he's like "I'm available today?" I'm like "Cool, let's meet up in the middle either here, or I can go as far east as here, just need to hop on a bus and hit up an ATM at either spot and I'm good"

25 minutes later he's like "Oh you can drive somewhere?"

If that's as clear as you can be and as much attention as you can pay to the conversation I'll just skip this one

He said he might be able to drive to me, so I gave him one more shot, gave him a nearby meet-up where I can hit up an ATM and can do the deal and told him to give me an hour notice since he went dead when I asked if that was okay.

But yes, if he doesn't message me in 15 minutes saying "OK, BE THERE IN 10" I'll take you up on that, definitely. I'll just have you sit on it for half a month and mail it out mid-November (I can still pay soon as I get RVM paid up, working on that now actually). Thanks, @Gypsy !

if you arent enjoying the old ones, then WIII and P5 are what you need. they both start a little slow, so give them time to take off. but once they do.. wow. P5 is definitely one of the better JRPGS in years, it does so many things that all jrpgs need to start doing. it has a button to heal outside of combat, without going into menus. it has a fast forward button to speed up combat if all you are going to do just basic attacks for the next couple turns.

i find it a harder to go back to the older ones now too, there are a few that are so good i can still play them. shadow hearts, FF7-10, dragon quest 8, radiata stories are a couple that come to mind.

repetitive combat is definitely a thing in the older games, but it never really gets old in the witcher especially, as you need to employ different abilities and strategies for different monsters.

for the witcher definitely definitely definitely watch the lore series on Shoddycast on youtube and then Treesicles the story you never knew. great primers for what happened in the old games and you can then enjoy witcher 3 so much more.

tokyo xanadu ex+ is another im looking forward to at the first of december, its Falcom's take on persona from what it looks like, so that should be good.

Dragon Quest 11 looks really good too.

also check out the Trails in sky/trails of cold steel stuff, i havent played them all myself yet but ive heard they are great and put the world building and writing of other games to shame. trails in the sky 1 and 2 are on psp (so that means shield ...) and trails 3rd is on pc. cold steel id wait apparetly there are ps4 ports coming to go along with part 3 of that one on ps4.

lol, i dont know i would even consider something cheating if all it does is save grinding time, as thats something you COULD do on your own. aint got time for that anymore though.

what grinding in games has done for me is made me start accepting i will just be playing the main quest and most side missions in games and not beating the optional stuff in some games like superbosses etc that you have to be maxed or close to have a prayer. dragon quest 8 for example i got to darksteel dragon and that was it. that one is as much RNG luck as anything but you get the picture

i also think about replaying the mass effect trilogy someday, and someday i probably will, but ive already done that three times and dont know i'll ever have time again lol.

Some more recent ones I've enjoyed are Luminous Arc, Bravely Default (not finished) and Child of Light. The grinding doesn't bother me most of the time but there are some games that just do it wrong. As long as I'm not over or under powered moving through the story, I'm generally good. Story is important, although not absolute, this is where I think most JRPGs fail, at least for what I'm looking for in games I'll stick with to the end.

I'm actually playing Dragon Warrior 1 this week for fun, grinding for gold and experience and even enjoying the simple Nes gameplay. It's fun since I DONT know where everything is anymore or have it easy. Maybe I just need a challenge to get any satisfaction from passing games idk.

You totally should play it again. I'm not sure which town Tantegel is I'm only on level 10 right now trying to grind some gold for some better armor so I can win against better enemies. Tangetel is the starting castle, I always try to use that as a landmark. I could also say south of Garinham (where you'll prolly buy the large shield from), or north of Hauksness (the ruined town) if that helps. I will also always refer to the NES names of things- the town is Cantlin, not Mercado like the GB remake.

I may go through it again on the Famicom, just so I can mess with the password system...

For those not wanting to emulate, this is like a $14 shipped SFC cart. The MMX collection on PS2 is around that same price sealed too. Definitely an affordable game this month.

Yeah games like Ninja Gaiden Black, Blinx, Forza, KOTOR, and Fuzion Frenzy will be playable on Xbox One if you have the original disc. It doesn't actually play the disc. It downloads the game and uses the disc as verification. I've gotten a whole bunch of messages about them in the past week, so I'm guessing it just went live.

Putting this out there for this group first ... I may have unexpectedly overspent a bit on trying to knock off TurboGrafx games from my wanted list this weekend, so that I can buy the overpriced Turbografx game that I was actually planning on getting.

image

Saiyuki: Journey West - D/M/C - GS stickers on case + manual
Hoshigami - D/M/C - Case has some cracks
Blaster Master: Blasting Again - D/M/C
Thousand Arms - D/M/C (+ lenticular card)
Alundra - D/C - disc has a smallish "P" on it
Alundra 2 - D/M/C - GS stickers on case + manual
Arc the Lad Collection - D/C (no extras)

I know PS1 games arent super hot right now ... but I bet they will be in about 18 months. Let me know if you're interested in anything here ... I have loose prices in mind, and more pics if you're interested.

https://kotaku.com/gamestop-offering-unlimited-6-m...

so gamestop is putting out a rental program, kinda like gamefly in a way in that there is no time limit, for 60 for 6 months you can take any in stock game home, keep it as long as you want, and bring it back anytime and take anything else. at the end of the six months you get to take any preowned game to keep just like you bought it, and then you pay another 60 bucks. powerup members only as thats how they track who has what, and its in their best interest for you not to bring it back as you already gave them 60 bucks anyway.

if you could play a lot of games in that amount of time this could actually be kinda cool i guess? i barely finish a game a month i feel like, so i wouldnt see myself doing this but i think a lot of people will do it.

ill look again, im pretty sure i saw you pay 60 every six months and get unlimited rentals and at the end of the six months you get a game, making the 60 essentially a deposit. they gotta have a way to keep getting money from you.

PowerPass lets you choose a game from GameStop's preowned library, take it home then swap it for something else when you're done. There's no limit on the number of games you can play during the six months, though you can only be renting one at a time.

It's a solid deal, but the best part might be that when the six months are up, you get to choose a preowned game to keep.

The program is available only to PowerUp Rewards members (so that the game they've got can be tracked), and you can only choose from games on the shelf in a physical store, not from the company's online catalogue. And they do mean any preowned game: there won't be any restrictions or limited pools to choose from.

The program starts November 19.

@Dashey - can you confirm?

i can see someone forgetting about it and then taking it back three days after the six months and being mad when they tell them they bought it lol

Digital is hurting them for sure. I saw on a game news channel I watch said that 2/3 of current gen game sales are digital. I have noticed their prices being alot better too, they are probably having to. What they were doing wasn't going to be sustainable in the climate gaming is in.

I think many brick and mortar stores are going to be in real trouble over the next couple years not just gs, but stores like this that seek your extra money and not necessity are being outdone by Amazon and others online.. and people are getting more and more comfortable buying online.

I'm not delusional digital is where we are headed. However that current gen comment probably includes PC. article writers do other stuff to skew the numbers in the direction they want as well.

The only time I go into a Gamestop is when they are having a crazy sale. I'd bet I'm not alone in that. I doubt they have many loyal customers.

that's possible, maybe I can find that video again but they put vids everyday and its from several months ago so I may not can that's a lot of vids lol. it very well may include steam and if so ya it will throw the numbers.
I do feel its where we are headed, but until console sales get stronger online we may still see physical as retailers need incentive to sell systems, and that is games and accessories. unless they start setting msrp to allow retailers to make money on them, which traditionally they don't. I guess they could sell those download cards,i guess we will see. PS5 will probably still have discs or high density cards but id wager PS6 doesn't have any physical media. same for whatever comes after X1 and its successor, even though they say they aren't doing "generations" anymore they will at some point have to do something totally new to keep up. I think what they mean by that is a future commitment to backward compatibility more than they don't intend to ever make another console.

def, if they could meet or beat online prices id def buy more there, but why would I give them 54.99 for a used game I can get here for 35 or less? all they need is a couple of people tracking ebay sold listings and they could keep their costs more competitive and they could win back a lot of more price savvy gamers id wager.

GameStop wants to be the savvy game shop but when you try to sell used game for $54.99....how do you even do the sales pitch?

"Hey! You want this brand new game for full price of $59.99 OR....you can buy the same game used and abused, without the case for $54.99!"

They also prey on the casual gamers and clueless parents with too much money.

absolutely, every time im in there which is pretty rare anymore, its a weird kid trying to buy a mature game and then the parent having to come in and ok it, or them trying to trade a game and clueless parent has to come in with their Drivers License, or clueless parent with half the name of the game someone wants, or a casual who has no idea they are overpaying greatly for the convenience of not waiting 2 days for amazon to ship it. for awhile this was probably enough to make money, but im wondering if that must be changing with all this new stuff and them actually dropping some prices after awhile. I was in their a couple weeks ago looking at the 4 for 20 sale and I actually saw some prices that weren't that unreasonable on some older stuff like ps3 and early ps4 type stuff.

with the game rental thing they must be banking on a lot of people getting in on that, the good stuff will be taken and they must think the number of users will make up for the lost sales when the only copies of that game are out on rental. that and possibly they like it so much they come back in with it and want to buy it, but the majority of gamestop regulars I would think aren't collectors? they are about playing and turning it over for something else, so who knows. my brother for instance only ever has 4 or 5 games at a time, once he's finished something he never keeps anything hardly save for a couple of his faves like the witcher. im surprised he buys as much digital as he does but he likes the convenience of that.

I use GameStop when they have retarded trade in deal promotions, like so retarded that some trade in value exceed their for sale price. Then I buy hardware from them without guilt.

I also shop their retro games once in a while, especially if they have a B2G1 promo.

Honestly I think this is great news. If people are dumb enough to sign up for essentially Gamefly (that you also have to pay $15/year on TOP of monthly fees to participate in) and their shelves are reduced to Madden Madden Madden and Call of Duty: Last Year's Edition, they should lose a lot of casual customers as they downgrade from a joke of a game store to a facade of a game store. ya, I hope the games as a service fad will pass. I hate seeing so many studios I used to like being reduced to loot box pushers or closed down by the corporate machine. at least Rockstar has said they are still committed to big single player experiences, and hopefully the success of horizon and other games recently have shown them we don't just want MP games, though ghost recon and destiny 2 at the top of the years sales charts don't help that lol. I did like ghost recon though.

I think I passed either Mega Man 9 or 10 on 360 probably 10 but I forgot exact names and numbers on things sometimes. But the original Mega Man Nes style of games for sure.

I really did like them though. I might have Mega Man Collection on og Xbox. If it was working without me worrying about the messed up power cable catching on fire I might try some Mega Man 2 I used to see stuff in Nintendo power and that one always seemed to have the best stages and bosses.

Mega Man X1-3 all use passwords on SNES. (Save States are of course available for their Virtual Console/compilation counterparts. Mega Man X Collection uses the PS1 version of MMX3).

I'd consider finding all Heart Tanks, Sub Tanks, and weapon/armor upgrades (including the Easter eggs) before defeating the final boss as 100% completion. I have only been able to do this in the original MMX.

It looked like pooooop. Classic case of 3D graphics making a game look worse. I know little else about it though.

Okay, I'll share a bit more. The game drives me insane with the sounds/voices. He says his little catch phrases WAY TOO MUCH. There are hard games that are fun and then there are games that are just frustrating enough to make you not want to play them. M9 is the latter for sure. The stages are long and I think quite boring. The story is told in cutscenes but also in game, so when you start a stage with story crap going on and then die....yep, you get to hear it all again while restarting the level...over....and over.....and over.....sigh. It's not completely bad but certainly is a game I just cannot play. There are other minor issues and things that work against it but those are the main reasons I won't be playing it again.

As a kickstarter backer of that crap, Mighty mega man nine held ALOT of promises, got millions to make those promises, and failed to fulfill them in spectacular ways. Also the game itself sucks.

Gotta blame the backers on this one. Keiji Inafune shows up on the promo videos and every anime dork started throwing their cummies at the computer monitor, ready to unload their life savings to fund another "Almost Mega Man" game, fundamentally misunderstanding that, other than drawing some nice pictures, Inafune had very.... VERY little to do with the successes of Mega Man/X. Kamiya warned us!

I had to stop off at the library to return stuff and ended up checking out a pile of movies. Almost all foreign titles. The first one I watched was excellent, posted about it in the movie thread. The Rules of the Game. I think I'm going to watch the other older titles first and then move on to the newer stuff (one of the newer titles being from 92 lol).

I had air heads set aside in case any uncostumed teenagers came to our door. But all just normal kids. It's more about attracting anyone to our house than denying unmotivated d-bags. Neither of my cheap ass GTZ-esque neighbors were giving out candy. There are a couple richy rich neighborhoods in my town. I imagine the smart kids all just went to those.

Most of the kids around here go downtown or to the larger subdivisions, so we rarely have trick-or-treaters. We went to our church Halloween party instead. I was dressed as Ash from Pokémon. A few kids wanted to hug the Pikachu plush I had with me (and one did). Couldn't blame them... the Pokémon Center store plush are super soft and great for stress relief. Afterwards, we went and got more of the Halloween Hi-Chew that we gave out because Hi-Chew is one of the best Japanese candies out there and it's nice to see it available pretty much anywhere. smiley:::cool smile

Living in the wilderness has its perks sometimes.* I never even had anyone approach the house, lol. I would imagine all events here were done and churches, maybe a school or the "community building". I don't have children so I didn't look into it.

*So nothing EVER happens out here but last week just two miles from my house there was a double murder + suicide. Older guy just snapped.

This probably isn't that far off.

Also I can't verify for this recent murder, but the last time he was out in my area to check out something he was in fact wearing a Hawaiian shirt and flip flops. Someone attempted to run against him two elections back (2014 I want to say) and brought up stuff like that during the campaign too. They also mentioned wanting to actively patrol, be more serious etc... They got like 4% of the vote, because lol.

wooow, especially in small places people are about that status quo. our town didn't grow or get anything new in it for years until some of the very old money got older and couldn't stay in office anymore. we had the same sheriff for a like a hundred years too. sadly getting more chain stuff and super walmart etc has shut down a lot of our mom and pop stuff over the last 20 years, we had 7 grocery stores in a small town of less than 20k til the great walmart super center genocide of 94. only 2 survived, Brookshires and piggly wiggly and pig only for the virtue of being on the far side of town, but it would eventually fall. we have mostly retained a smallish town feel though we've grown a lot. getting a chili's and a lowes about 15 years ago was something we never thought would happen 20-25 years ago, and now we have a starbucks, so its the beginning of the end probably :( they are probably going to make us a 5A school district soon. unthought of 20 years ago.

Funny, Team17 announced today they're bringing physical copy of Overcooked to the Switch in the UK along with a couple other games.

Very happy Nicalis got Wonder Boy though. I'm really looking forward to what they'll do for the Launch edition goodies. Loving that we'll almost certainly get a manual with it.
