new Thread Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

I was thinking like 30 minutes to an hour. We can have some sort of intro in the beginning, like GTZ origin stories, how you found GTZ. Then we can talk about RTT a bit and our game of the month. Then ill have some questions ready for when are done with the intro, RTT and small talk.

(uneducated opinion) A good podcast production with remote people will have good mics at each end, a time sync and everyone recording linear audio into something like Audacity, everyone uploads their streams to someone who can mix them and do some quick EQ for the peaks, then you get a finished product you can distribute after compressing.

This is going to be like the "Merv Griffin" episode of Seinfeld and you get to be the host aka Kramer 😉

I think it would be fun to listen to if not totally bizarre that is 😊 And yes I think Lets play together should have one of the recurring time slots in every episode including talking about maybe why you are suggesting (insert random future game pick here) for game of the month.

It would also be cool to talk about retro rereleases coming to different consoles that people should know about. I mean part of what makes this thread so great is when people are sharing which games are headed where and people like me are usually unaware of.

As far as the podcast, everyone definitely has to record locally in Audacity so the audio isn't bullcrap. Use Auphonic or levelator (or something) to noise gate and normalize the audio because none of you guys are audio engineers. Use good closed headphones that don't bleed out sound and cause echo headaches. Use pop filters and shock mounts. Rig up a sound shield:

image

Don't buy a fudging $100 piece of foam like a moron. I drape acoustic blankets I have laying around over a ladder and keyboard stand. It's professional as fudge. Turn off your AC, dishwasher, washing machine...

I'd be happy to talk shop with you guys but don't want to crowd anyone out. I've been on podcasts with 6 people that were disasters. I'll definitely listen yes

PulseMan is great I REALLY like it! It's not supposed to be Mega Man, it's a Genesis game and it's a lot closer to Sonic than Mega Man and it's better than the first Sonic as far as I'm concerned.

And yeah I have been playing it almost everyday but I'm in no hurry to finish it. Since you know, I actually ENJOY playing it and all.

Also I've been playing it on an arcade stick and it's the first time I've used this controller so I think it controls pretty well. There's a learning curve on this one too so it's really unique and the graphics are gorgeous!

I'm a little curious. Why intentionally exclude Mega Man 5 (Nintendo Entertainment System) and Mega Man 6 (Nintendo Entertainment System) and intentionally include Mega Man 8 -- Anniversary Collector's Edition (PlayStation)? Don't get me wrong; personally, I love 'em all. But, I've been told that the popular vote endorses the former much more than the latter. surprise

He has also said Mega Man 10 isn't very good, I might actually like 10 better than 9 but I haven't played either in awhile. I think sometimes people just get caught up in little differences from each game. Like omg he doesn't have that one move in this game? it's garbage! Throw it out! I've really enjoyed every Mega Man I've played too including MMX but I still think I like the 8 bit style better.

I'm like that with Mortal Kombat too though so I have Zero room to talk. They killed Mileena in MKX and she's my favorite video game character ever and my Main in any MK game she's in. I haven't even bothered playing through the story mode in MKX yet because screw that!

Got my first negative feedback on ebay in years, for a copy of Conker for Xbox. It worked when I tested it a few months ago, the buyer said it doesn't work and I refunded them but they still left a negative a few days later. It was in really bad condition, and I had a bad feeling about selling it but still did and didn't test it again before shipping. Lesson learned there, I've got a big box of games including some expensive titles like copies of Def Jam NY for PS2 and Xbox that both have cracks in the center of the disc and both work, that I've been holding off on selling.

Also I'll let you guys know when there's more interesting stuff up, right now I'm working on bundling up all the common titles that are here I didn't list on the first round and have to go get the rest of the cool crap once I have room in my apartment.

If you refunded the money I don't get why they had to neg you. For all I know that's your main source of income and this person negs you?!? Did they at least send the game back? Because even if it looked bad that doesn't mean it doesn't work AND they saw the pics and ordered it anyways?

You need to get that game back to test again otherwise that person is probably trying to get it for free.

I tried fixing a cracked spindle with Ambroid Pro Weld and fudgeed a working disc, so don't do that! Get these thingies: https://www.rubberdisc.com/product-page/100-hub-pr...

I'm just letting it go it was $20, the disc was in bad condition and I didn't test that far into the game. I offered them $10 to remove the negative but they haven't responded yet.

Was there some sort of Xbox collecting related announcement today? I just sold 4 expensive and not very in demand xbox games that had been sitting for a bit today all to different people.

I got a buyer of my Super Nintendo HDRetrovision cable with some compatibility issues, posting here to see if there are any possible solutions.

He's getting a black and white image. This is what the back of his display/TV looks like, there are two:

I find that most people (like myself) dismissed Mega Man 8 simply because they didn't spend more than 10 minutes with it and didn't even figure out the controls properly. Once I did, it's better than Mega Man 7, and from what I've played, it's significantly more game for your buck than most Mega Man installations.

I didn't care for 5 or 6. I felt like MM10's level design was compromised to make room for the Easy Mode, and I didn't like the music in 10 nearly as much as I did in 9.

I got into an argument on Facebook regarding values.

I can accede the point that for $300, if you've already got a PCE, this could POSSIBLY hit the value threshhold by making it not a useless piece of RF output crap, but you can buy a friggin' Duo R for less. Hell, I just bought a Coregrafx with a Super CD-ROM2 drive AND Fighting Street for $250.

Sounds stupid but he doesn't have the red audio cable plugged in instead of the red video cable correct? Also I am really cursing my luck right now, I may have missed a Nintendo GameCube component cable for $30 by a day!! I am 2nd in line, but cant see why first person would drop out. Also I know one was offered for sale recently here, how do people feel about Neo Geo Pocket Color? One is for sale on FB market locally. Console in good shape and Metal Slug 1st mission and crush roller cart onlys.

@Lunar it's really not your fault if it isn't compatible with his tv... However if it's displaying black and white it's likely a problem with them being a moron. If the tv is incompatible it should just not display anything.

There was one being worked on that would work only with an interface unit. I hope this project doesn't kill that.

That's pretty much what it's doing. When they're describing an "ODE" it's not literally like, "Oh you're running a PC Engine emulator!", it's simply instructing the system to read this data as if it were coming from an optical drive from either a Super CD-ROM2 or an IFU set with a CD-ROM2 drive set into it, it's the exact same data it's using as if you had it burned and used the burned copy in a real drive. With this plugged into a PC Engine or a Coregrafx, you have an SD card assembly essentially spoofing the CD drive, Arcade-card equivalent and the back-up RAM included in the Duo/Duo R, as well as giving you composite/RGB output in a similar form factor to the Tennokoe 2. This is the same as the Neo Geo carts they offer, and is essentially the same as Everdrives. It's not an emulation in the way you're thinking of an emulation.

@Gypsy , if I'm thinking of the same project you are, that was one solo guy and he obviously stalled out. These kinds of projects are awful difficult to finish if you're a one-man show, let alone scale for offer.

Well if they would strip it down to work for a duo, not sure how doable that is given the lack of an expansion port and skip all the video out extra stuff, I might be interested. Kind of like the GD-Emu for dreamcast, but hopefully less expensive.

The Duo/R/RX do not have an interface for this sort of thing, you're looking for like, the equivalent of a GD-ROM drive replacement. They're still very expensive (Most solutions like this for Saturn/DC run around $250 I believe) and require substantial modification to get up and running, usually some soldering is required. This thing literally pops on the back of any PCE/Coregrafx. It's pretty handy.

Just... not $300 handy, lol. If you only had a PC Engine (not Coregrafx) this would be a no-brainer at this price, since it replaces both a drive AND an Everdrive, AND upgrades you from RF only to either composite or straight-up RGB.

I'll probably end up getting one, just won't be an early adopter for this. Hopefully it's still in production in a year or two, and hopefully the cost of this stuff goes down or we get some more competition on the scene. For some reason these guys have the worst fudging luck with plastic shell tooling, they're still backfudgeed on the AVS carts.

Yeah. That $30 is also assuming you have a power supply, video cable and a controller. If you have to buy a controller that's another $20 minimum these days. I would think anyone really into old games would have a compatible power supply and av cable. So it's anywhere from $310 to about $370 total depending on your needs. What you get over a $250-ish purchase: RGB, everdrive, arcade card. So it's not completely terrible as PCE/Turbo goes but I won't be rushing out to buy it either and I bet the profit margin is really high.

Well to be fair they've gotta get their R&D back, that ain't exactly free, regardless of the cost of parts. Everdrives are comparatively uncomplicated bits of metal.

Products like these are also marketed toward people who just want to play without having to hunt on ebay or look for trades, and have the disposable cash.

But I wonder how big the market is considering TG16/PCE is relatively obscure? Compared to Nintendo or Sega, let's say.

Smaller, much smaller. I really like the PCE game library but then I really like the Saturn and Dreamcast too. For most 'tards Turbo is something they move on to after they are bored with collecting NES, SNES and Genesis. I have more PCE games than those three consoles COMBINED.

Ive gotten into NEC PC Engine real late and am having to slowly build up a physical collection. Its very small compared to my genesis collection though. I enjoy the turbo everdrive/ mega ed for getting to test drive before I buy though. I think that has kept my physical collection lower than it otherwise would be since a lot of games play worse than I imagine them too. Had some fun trying out Trouble Shooter on Genesis with the Mega ED last night.

I used to have a lot more Genesis games but I've been purging down to Sonic and Shining Force only more or less. I do have some low level filler that is close to unsellable remaining. I don't think I've ever had more than 10 NES or SNES games that I would consider in my collection at any given point. I have had more than that in my possession due to the acquisition of large lots. An everdrive for Genesis is something I'd like to get at some point. I don't think I have enough interest in NES/SNES to get one for either of those systems.

I got into PCE fairly late too. Older stuff where I built up a large collection early/cheap was PS1/PS2/Xbox/Dreamcast. I long since cashed out of PS1 (lol mistake) and only have my favourites now.

Lol you don't say. I still like reading them though. I had someone super stoked that I sent an item in a box recently. I've really been trying to avoid bubble mailers unless it's a single dvd case or small jewel case only. DOING THE LORDS WORK.

GTZ is just a smaller more savvy market. Alot of my things sell for up to twice as much on eBay as my asking here. Nothing wrong with that, just GTZ peeps are more selective.

Prob list that Derby Saturn for like $500 or something on eBay, it'll prob sell.

Heh, I don't think I've sold anything for double. I do like trying to give deals here. I just ended up buying the anime anyway (bank account is flush atm) and held out longer than I thought I would. I still only listed the one game too, I'm just not sure how much I care to try and dump most of this rapidly. I would really like this and some other PlayStation 2 gone eventually (I really went deep buying bad PS2 games) but maybe I should just wait as interest in the kind of titles I have up is very low. Gotta wait until they are top retro (or really I'd just sell them to the first interested person here).

The one thing I'm really on the fence about listing on eBay in general is the very rough Lunar SSSC I have up. I took the worst bits of the copy I got from you and my old copy. I actually have a really nice copy now but the one I'm selling is not pleasant hence the price basically being game + case only price.

Really it was only like 4 broken things right? And I got a game fixed. Considering the bulk and that you didn't test anything (can't blame you given the values) it wasn't too bad. Plus you did the right thing so it's all good.

A store wouldn't even take it for free? Lolzors. To be fair, who the hell wants to play PS1 games multiplayer. Then even if you do, you might as well just do it on PS2 with a PS2 multi-tap.

I have...like exactly 1 PCE game left. 3 TG CD games...of which I am keeping. I'm imagining it's one of those you are looking for.

Sega Saturn MSX Collection...$70.

Attention Hoarders:

Sometimes a quick Wikipedia read will let you know if you actually like the game you've been hoarding for the past 10 years but haven't actually ever played it.

Case in point: Tales of the Worlds: Radiant Mythology...offline MMO? No thanks.

Counterpoint: I am going to keep and play through Star Ocean 1 and 2 for PSP as well as Valkyrie Profile Lenneth.

Is there an English patch for Saturn Snatcher? The Sega CD version was officially localized so I didn't think anyone went to the trouble.

Subtract $25 from any of these listings shipped and they're yours instead. Honor system on shipping charges! Also I'm pretty sure the PS2's a 250gb, will confirm when I fire it up. I'll take $60 off if you want two of them!

Such an enabler DG! Thank god I just read the Power of Now, no more hoarding and endless backlog...the present moment is the only and real moment. All I need is 1 or 2 games and the rest is expendable.

"Make the Now the primary focus of your life."

The future is not real, just a projection created by your mind(ego)!

Let's be serious and talk gaming and psychology for a second.

Every single time I tried to collect games, it ends up being too much and I end up purging.

It's always a 2-year cycle, give or take a few months.

Why is that?

I think it has alot to do with the sheer amount of items and cost involved. Games are constantly releasing and you never get ahead.

Embracing emulation and digital, and tightening my focus on what I want to play and keep has helped me alot.

Digital is also part of the problem though. It's not as evident since it's intangible.

I think the main problem is this future your mind has painted for you:

One day in the distant future, you will play or have played all of these games you have accumulated.

But if you think about it, it's impossible.

Even if you had all the time in the world and no worries for finances, locked yourself in a cave and played all of these games 24/7, you still won't be able to finish before you die.

There are many reasons one is attached to physical items. I don't want to discuss philosophy here more than to say that. Take a good hard look at how much time you have, consider what games you CAN get to. And even if it's several years away. Don't keep more than what you actually have time for. As you know I started doing this a while ago and I find that a smaller more streamlined collection of top games and personal favorites is even more fun to look at.

Actually the most reasonable explanation is also the most obvious. Space constraints. Space in big cities (like New York) is at a premium. I'm out in the desert in outskirts of Los Angeles county now and have a 2 bedroom apartment to myself. And it's super cheap.

I actually need more shelving options because if I had it set up properly I could have everything super clean and neat and it suddenly wouldn't seem like too much stuff. Lunar on the other hand needs more space and he doesn't want to overcrowd his family with too much gaming stuff. I totally get his dilemma. My ex fiancé had huge problems with all the "stuff" we had and no room for anything. We lived together in a two bedroom slightly smaller than this with more furniture and an extra bathroom that took away more storage space. It's a very similar layout but with two extra walk in closets and one less bathroom with slightly larger bedrooms.

Plus I'm living alone now so I can buy all the random junk I want but not store it properly. It's starting to make me a little crazy.

Pay attention to how much money you slingin' at once. I wasn't paying attention and I bought a PS4 for $400 and probably about $300 in games without even noticing.

Then next paycheck threw $350 at a Super CD-ROM2/Everdrive setup.

Collecting wise, I like having the games I really enjoy or want to play at some point right here for when (if) the time comes. I don't want to have to go out searching for something to buy when I feel the need to play. Most of my collection now are games I really enjoy or ones I think I would like to play at some point. Granted, it's much bigger than it needs to be as I'll probably never finish it but I'd rather have it and not play it than vise-versa. So, I guess for me, it's a matter of just having it handy and knowing it's there when I'm ready. The flip side is that I don't "need" any of these things, but I enjoy them although I regularly feel the need to "pair it down" even more and never get around to it. End goal for me will be when I finally have a place to display my collection, that's probably when I'll determine what the final "selection to keep" will be for me.

Tastes change, feelings change, priorities change, this is life and if you enjoy keeping them around or shuffling them out, the goal is having fun with it however you choose to do it.

This is why I generally hold on to anime/movies. There are always exceptions like if something is really bad or recently just shooting back 08th MS Team to @DiamondDave but in general I like just keeping stuff, because I will watch it again. Especially movies.

This was my modus operandi as well. Though I feel like I tend to go overboard and end up not playing anything.
2017 is actually a good year for me. I played more games than I did the previous 5 years combined prob.
Game of the month kicked started alot of Nintendo games for me that I am thinking about doing a full "beat every Nintendo game" series.

I am experiencing all 3 of these right now, I had so many systems hooked up all at once and can play any game at my disposal, I ended up not playing at all.
Now I just have a few systems hooked up, I've been playing alot more.

Yes but I have no internet here yet so mine will probably end up sucking too once I finally lay off the auctions and get the spectrum here.

Does it stay warm out there during winter though? I'm not a big fan of high humidity but it gets really cold here. Even without snow. It's crazy.

Word. This year I also realized I like playing more than collecting. Also realized I like platformers more than shooters. Don't buy new gen games unless you gonna play right away. And lastly, it ain't easy being @ErickRPG. Even with me being only 8(maybe 8.5) on the ErickEPG scale, I already feel like its too much work.

Well I have been mostly focusing on retro myself since being older I can actually find more of the games I couldn't afford when I was a kid. They are usually way cheaper too!

I don't play them right away of course but I really get to enjoy them when I do finally get to them. Especially every lets play together game so far.

I'm maybe in the minority here but I've really liked every game we've played so far. I just keep thinking people haven't given each game a fair chance is all.

Not slowing down. I haven't gotten tired of beating RPGs yet. I guess I'm making up for years of being depressed and getting really far in so many games but never getting to the actual end.

Yea I definitely need to watch out for my spending. Though I've been pretty good at not buying lately.

When I sell crap on my shelf, it surprises me how much I have already invested that's not being played.

I still have a few top shelf games that I am too stubborn to let go but time might convince me.

Every first episode is the same. Mysterious boy finds way into Gundam, no one stops him because of course not. HOLY CRAP HE'S AN ACE PILOT.

Did you watch the series or the oav? It's the oav getting released. I'll form an opinion on it when I watch it but I definitely want to try it out.

First episode of the series, it was during the whole DirecTV webcasting debut, decided to check it out since it was coming up on Adult Swim. Finished it and I was like "Are yoU SURE I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS SHOW"

Model 1 or model 2 genesis? Also do you have Saturn hooked up with scart? model 1 or model 2 as well? My model 1 acts perfectly with her cable. All 3 of my model 2 saturns get some audio noise when using her scart cable. I believe the determining factor for me will be the 32x output as I believe it wont matter that my base unit is a model 1 since it still has to go through the 32x.

Maybe I just got a bum cable for my Saturn from her then, its supposed to by good with either model, but since all 3 of my model 2's act the same I am inclined to think its something with the cable. @Lunar what are you using for a scart cable from your model 2 Sega Saturn??

I actually just encountered a problem with Saturn last night, I get some minor video noise, just some flickering lines but it was annoying. At first I thought it was the OSSC, I tried YPbPr and same issue persisted. After connecting OSSC directly to TV via HDMI, the noise was gone.

I'll have to mess around with the DVDO some more to determine the exact cause, never had issues woth Saturn before. As far as where I got the cable, I will have to check my records.

I'm starting to wonder if I really need the DVDO, OSSC is more than competent on its own.

@Gypsy will always be the father of DVDO to me.

Last night while I was watching @sharif play Pulse Man, I was messing around to see what's the best way to play PS1 games, I have a PSOne with Sony LCD, PS2 via SCART to OSSC, and OLED Vita. I think LCD has the weakest colors. Vita is really good if you're ok with a smaller screen. OSSC looks damn good, but blowing up PS1 pixels isn't the best idea.

ErickRPG
GameTZ Subscriber Triple Gold Good Trader Global Trader - willing to trade internationally

I chose PSOne with LCD screen as the best way to play my official physical media. If I wasn't stuck to physical I'd say Vita or PSP is the absolute best way. I did beat Legend of Dragoon and FFVIII on my PSPgo and they both looked amazing.

PSOne screen has terrible black levels and you have to almost be straight on to it to get a decent picture, but the games do look nice on a smaller screen. I plan to beat my dozen or so PSOne RPGs on the LCD combo. I'm playing FFVII on it right now and it looks good small. You almost don't even see the pixelization on a small screen like that and it actually kinda looks kinda sharp.

LOL.

Actually I mentioned to @Lunar before that the main reasons to keep it around to combo are PSP and compatibility. OSSC still has wild compatibility issues due to the off spec it sometimes outputs to, the DVDO will output to anything. Especially the ones with RGBHV out.

I had a surprising find today. Was at the book store at lunch to try and use some credit (I always have credit here, people basically and sometimes literally give away books at garage sales) and they actually had some anime in. So I grabbed Michiko and Hatchin for $5 out of pocket (always have to spend a little bit even when using credit because business).

Not at all, but keep in mind I have very good near vision and I have the PSOne on a shelf and sit on a comfortable recliner and sort of lean in comfortably. So I am pretty close to the screen. Maybe 2-3 feet.

I mean you aren't going to lean back fully and use the LCD screen like a television. Sort of have to sit up with the LCD screen on the desk in front of you. Then it's perfectly fine. I really prefer the way PSOne games look on a smaller screen.

If I didn't care as much about physical I'd just say emulate it on retroarch on either ipod/iphone or android phones and either one of these comfortable controllers for either. PSOne games would look really sharp on a phone. I have both by the way, but I abandoned emulation a couple years ago except for MAME games.

@ErickRPG how are you setup for scart on your Sega Saturn? Model 1 or 2? Cable bought from? I am thinking I may need to go to a scart with rca audio breakout for my Saturn if I cant figure out the audio hum :( I could continue to use my model 1, but its CIB and I don't wanna wear it out any more than I have to, unlike most I prefer the Model 1 look to the Model 2.

Model 2s are a lot fussier for w/e reason. Model 1s generally look MARGINALLY better. It's not something you'd notice unless you are staring at a direct comparison on a high quality display.

It does look good, but I am not generally a fan of randomly generated levels...

Bleh, didn't realize it was randomly generated. Craft a game worth playing! Procedural generation is lazy. It will be the best Mega Drive with Crisis in its name though. I heard Coffee Crisis was terrible. But Coffee Crisis is a beat 'em up so of course it's terrible.

Insinuating MMX4 isn't the culmination of the X series' greatest heights

MMX1 is super good, one of the greatest games created imo, but MMX4 perfects the mechanics and gives you the best Zero gameplay to date... Bit more talking than I'd like but it's not MMX5 or 6. And thank Christ it's not any of the PS2 games, but you'll see more on that next year it looks like. I'll roll back this suggestion, if everyone agrees to pick up the X collection or installments, whatever they're doing, we can hold off until next year to play X4, but I think it needs to be played.

If THAT were true, I'd love MM5 and 6 and 10 and MMX5-8!
