new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Ahh I thought you were drawing them, who's drawing them/made the png?

I can help out if need be, but can't give a ETA on availability to do the tasks, and have to demand double vote value for each platform I make GTZ Icons for ;)

18x18 pixel art requires more creativity than I have.

Really? One of the reason I use the AVS is that I can use a Four Score with it, but can't on my Nt. Although no one needs to use a NES Advantage for anything because it's a garbage stick. Also my Power Pad doesn't fully work with an extension cable frown It would be convenient if it did.

Not bad for a CIB repro with brand new battery. $35 shipped each. I don't mind a few repros if the price is cheap enough. SNES repros cost $60 at the LOW end.

I have Langrisser II as well actually, except it's a retail copy.

Back in the days when I used to walk uphill both ways to and from school in a blizzard every day and was all gung ho about games I played through 2-5 all on the Saturn with printed off translation guides that I stapled together.

It's been so long I can't remember specifics. Since you liked the first one I think you'd like them though. I had no real complaints at the time. I believe 3 has a translation patch now.

Yeah cheap repros are great, gba is anyways, wouldn't buy one for a normal game, but a FE romhack for 10 bucks? Sure.

since it was mentioned, I did sell my Jaguar bundle semi-locally through a FB group several months back. Dunno how much they run now but my little bundle went for around 250 after shipping (so about 225). That was CIB though.

I'm holding off. I'll see what it's like when it's a finished product. Right now it doesn't even have sound as far as I can tell. It might be neat to toy around with one day, but I can't even make a good Super Mario Maker level honestly. I'm 100x more interested in the games other people make with it.

Yeah. I dicked around a bit with the NWN toolset back in the day but I could never be bothered to put in all the work required to actually make an adventure.

Yep.

I know nobody gives a crap and think it's sacrilege that the GTX 1080's being used for it, but all my League games are going rather well. I main support so usually I have to drag 4 other people flaming each other kicking and screaming to the finish line but we get it done more often than we don't

I wish I could find my old RPG Maker games. I put a ton of work into one of them. It's probably an unbalanced 3 hour trip through the stock asset caves of doom, but the dialogue might be fun and cringey.

For those interested in its final outcome, this Super NES Classic Edition (Super Nintendo) here actually sold for LESS than its original "Buy It Now" price of USD $85.00. That's right! After placing a bid to intentionally remove it's auction-ending power, this eBay item ended at exactly USD $79.50 and that includes its shipping cost. So, I actually helped someone save five bucks! Long as you spend more time playing the games than you do taking pictures of the games (I'd prefer zero pictures but I'll take what I can get) your hobby's your hobby and your money's your money, do what you will with it.

When that scale tips to the other end of masturbatory photography versus gamesmanship, that's when I get tilted.

This is just stereo sound, though those Magnepans are neat and tricky especially for music. I really don't want to shell out for a 5.1 set-up that is at the level I would want, but maybe some day. That's actually the only reason that guy on eBay was selling that amp (really fantastic vintage amp) is that he needed an amp to drive three speakers and it is only stereo.

Waiting to see if they make the multi-console powerhouse like the Nt Mini. I'll buy in when they have a console that takes original carts and controllers for vintage platforms and doesn't have the stupid aluminum block case. If they want to keep printing money, I imagine they're going to get there eventually.

If you are going to not do the original hardware + original carts anyway, then Super Nintendo Classic is a better choice. It has a great interface and the controllers are superior to the original.

The Gamecube is a BEAST too. A friend of mine back in the day had one that went through a war zone or something. Had to keep the lid in place by having something on top of it. Worked like a champ though.

It's okay I still haven't gotten together anything good to send you yet. I haven't been doing much lately. I've been trying to sleep more because I've been losing track of things I need to take care of. So no worries. There's been a couple of things I've been meaning to send to people here too and I don't even have money for it because I've been forgetting stuff.

Idk about how good gamecubes work over long periods of time I got one that doesn't read discs at all 😞

But it's all good.

5 hours, don't sell me short man. All I'm sayin is if I want to play the real carts I'd rather do it on the real SNES. Better get ready cause I'm gonna be talkin about the NES classic and N64 classic a bunch too.

Please don't call those atrocities fan localizations. The creators want nothing to do with that cart selling bullcrap.
Noid

If it was never commercially produced over here to begin with, it can't be a reproduction. For example, a pirated cartridge of EarthBound (Super Nintendo) can be called a reproduction 'cause it legitimately received an English production run here in the USA. But, a pirated cartridge of Seiken Densetsu 3 (Super Famicom) with a fan-made English translation patch can't be called a reproduction 'cause it never received an English production run here in the USA.

Right now, I'm not saying I agree or disagree with this practice. But, I am saying I disagree with its classification. Reproductions can deceive potential buyers while fan localizations can deceive only ill-informed potential buyers.

You thought about this subject way too much. It's a repro because they went out of their way to design the stupid thing to look as close to a real SNES cart as possible. Whereas a bootleg is usually just chinese bootleggers not giving a fudge.

I'm not too sure what that mental breakdown, or the associated selfie is about, but i'll just say this and be done with it. The only reason i picked up any of those to begin with is because GBA flash carts are/were just garbage. I ended up wasting far more money in buying what amounted to a USB killer for my GBA, a Compact flash card, and ultimately the replacement parts to a SP-101 than it did to just buy a few ~$10 bootlegs of my favorite romhacks on ebay and be done with it.

Big difference between the NT and the NT mini, the NT is just a repurposed NES internals IIRC. The NT mini is a impressive FPGA , that you can play ROMs from other systems.

IMHO The AVS is the perfect blend of the the NT mini and original hardware. It also does have scoreboard capabilities, if you jump through a couple hoops.

lol, you definitely hit a point depending on the age of your kids when you cant marathon games like you used to, eventually they get older and don't need you every second and start playing games themselves and with their friends then you start being able to get some more time in or they are then old enough to play with you.

unless you can find a girl as into games and anime as you are, its a tough balance, most women perceive it as you are ignoring them as they have no interest, but on that rare occasion a unicorn presents itself If you're lucky enough to rope it you can have the best of both worlds. I don't date non geeks anymore, I know I wont be happy so why bother, and consequently don't date much due to that lol. most girls my age didn't grow up into all that stuff, so they aren't into it now, they may like the mcu because its the cool thing to like but they don't really know anything about it. so a girl even half as geeky as myself at 36 is a tall order.

my brothers and i's ex wives both thought we would just stop gaming and that he wouldn't watch football anymore just because we got married, that we would want to rearrange the furniture every weekend or something. they were all excited because we didn't hunt at all and I didn't fish much, maybe every now and then, so they were like all right they wont be gone all the time as that's what women around here complain about, their men never being home due to these hobbies, so I was just like hey ya im playing this game but im home. there is a line where you are neglecting your mate but its also unrealistic for someone to expect someone to give up the thing they love the most too. in my case I gave up fishing, softball, poker night, and kept the games, but its never enough for some. just goes back to the make sure the person they are now is good enough even If they stay just like that. my mom made sure dad didn't hunt, and was willing to give up basketball, she didn't want someone who was gonna wanna go off all the time, and he made sure she could cook, he literally gave her a pound of hamburger meat and said turn this into food. and they've been together 36+ years lol.

I feel you on the constant interruptions @Lunar, pause/suspend is a modern marvel for us parents. I think it does eventually get better with kids, but it takes awhile till they aren't so dependent. I put my newer systems upstairs where I am most of the time so I can play those games the most, which consequently have pause/suspend, xbone and ps4. Everything else is downstairs which feels like a treat whenever I can spend any amount of time down there without having to keep a watchful eye that something isn't going to get broken.

It likely won't. It's a 1080p 15 inch $200 monitor. It's a ripoff. I'd never buy it new and I might, MIGHT pay $70 for it used.

I'll find out. If not, i can always return. The reason I like GameStop is that, I almost never have to spend "real" money out of pocket for crap.

I bought the Shield TV the same way and it wasn't even on sale when I bought it.

Between points and trade credit, I'm like a millionaire at GS. I can get anything I want!

The monitor pros are the ones who put the word "game" on a cheap display and sold it for over $200, lol. I can see the appeal of those Xbox briefcase setups if I was a pro wrestler always on the road though. (But even then, for the insane bulk, I'd just use a gaming laptop).

I don't play enough N64 to warrant it...buying wise. If I could convince someone to trade it that's a different story. Also RGB modded N64s are $100ish, so that's a different route you can go.

It's probably the worst video game movie I've ever seen, and I saw Doom in theaters. It's just some random guy who goes around buying Nintendo games and checking them off. There's no prices, history, or even real personality. It's just 90 minutes of a guy blowing like $30,000. The majority of NES Youtube videos are more entertaining IMO, even the "Guy holds up pickups in front of a shelf of games" shows.

Umm... eww? That's definitely not worth $100. I'll also throw out there as a reminder: MSRP of the original Game Boy was $89.99 at release. And it came with a game, headphones, and other various cables. Almost 30 years later, we get this thing for more money with less extra stuff and lower quality. Yeah... no thanks.

They probably spent a lot of effort sourcing a blurry, low contrast, correct aspect ratio screen for the purists, then they threw it into an emulator console with metal case, rechargable battery, and nothing else "authentic" about it and made a product for nobody.

They should've made a GB Boy Colour with a correct aspect ratio screen. Sell it for $50. It would sell gangbusters.

Ever since my wife stole my MacBook Air, I have been using a Surface Pro 4(i5/8GB/256GB), but I find myself not using it much at all.

Most of the time, I need a laptop with proper keyboard. While the SP4 keyboard is pretty darn good, keeping a super expensive laptop is such a waste.

So I may have a huge trade coming up, I will post the spoils once it's confirmed.

For tablet, I am mainly using ASUS ZenPad 10.1, it's a cheap iPad. I mostly use it to read PDFs, books, and some light browsing so I am quite happy with it.

Mostly an iPad Air 2 here. Like others, I prefer Windows, but my only tablet options there are too small (~7 inch screen) or too expensive (hello, Surface). I refuse to use anything Android, so those are out. And that left me with... this. I do have a relatively old laptop when I need to do something on that, like play on Steam. But it's usually just shut down, like it is now.

I have Ipod Touch 6th gen. Mostly for listening to music in my pocket when I make my rounds. I was gonna emulate on it but since I pretty much have every system I've ever wanted, I don't need it for much any more. But some of the apps are handy.

I bought a new PC recently, I-7, not sure the ram but I know I added some more and it's pretty decent plus spent about $150 on a decent graphics card. I got it for Wow and I was able to have everything on max and furthest drawing distance with no slowdown. So it did it's job. Currently not playing wow. I tend to play a bit at the start of a new exp pack and a bit at the end of each exp pack.

Starcraft, you can see the ebb and flow of battles. Counterstrike, you can see one bad ass jerk in a 1v4 cap four people with a pistol with four shots. Overwatch, everyone's humping the objective, there's bubbles everywhere and eventually one team gets caught with their pants down often enough and lose the game.

Nah. At least I haven't heard of it, I call people sexually charged terms frequently when appropriate and the worst I get is a "lol" or four "reported" lines in chat, but I think it's all in fun because I've never been reprimanded.

And you actually can't be successfully reported for playing a character in a map or manner that isn't in line with the meta. It's your money, as long as you're not literally keeping your teammates from playing the game there's no reason to punish.

I'm not even sure what the hell you're talking about here. Is overwatch some sort of quiddich cup of video games and esports or something. Because that doesn't make much sense to me either.

Blizzard wants it to be, everyone throwing literally hundreds of millions of dollars at the league to start up franchises also wants it to be. It'll probably fizzle out once they realize not only do non-gamers not give a fudge about Overwatch as an e-Sport, but honestly probably Overwatch fans don't either. They want curated FPS highlights, not macro views of objectives being arm wrestled for by two equally matched and boring team compositions.

Likewise on the paid bit. But my money is spoken for until I get @ErickRPG paid off. I think this year's resolution is to put more focus on games toward complete collection sets. So I'm cutting back on things like 360 and TG pew-pews. (Not selling, just... not really looking to buy.)

Does Ys III suck? I just got to the volcano area, and it is getting better. I am playing it on Genesis, maybe I should switch to PCE, but the gameplay is very weird and stiff, the translation/story is odd, and the graphics are spotty. It definitely seems like a step down from Ys I & II on NEC TurboGrafx-16.

I think it edges out PCE a bit, but it's always been a different beast than Ys Book 1/2 were. They were working on the attack mechanics here, and further developed them in Ys 4. It's in a weird transitory position in the Ys series.

They do. RGB/Comp is insanely crisp on them too.

Honestly any VGA CRT monitor composite looks really nice as well outputting at 640 x 480. Of course it's not as simple to hook up. And I will also add, I tried Saturn via a high quality SVideo cable and RGB on the same monitor, it was extremely hard to tell the difference. VGA CRT is my preferred method of hooking up now, but I'm not a member of the scanline cult like @DefaultGen (lol jk DG hates scanlines).

PCE composite is still the best composite. True story one time Arkhan at a convention had a PCE hooked up to a Commodore monitor via composite and some dorkos thought it was RGB.

It really is super crisp. I had my first Doucheindance Special Duo R hooked up out in the living room to my roommate's television and I just sorta blinked. I thought his TV was the champ, but then I hooked a Genesis up to it and it looked like absolute dogcrap so I shrugged and turned it off.

Instead? I just want to see the original designs through to see what people were going through to form their onions of the series; those pcefx dudes are so ravenous about it and I've always had a curiosity about that unpronounceable series. My goal is to play through them in order this year, then check out some remakes if possible. Probably here or here. Pinball can be streamed but it requires some fancy camera rigs with a bunch of cameras on every game (usually playfield, display, and player). Last years was streamed but the location moved this year and I didn't see anything about a stream frown The states that matter more than North Carolina like NY probably will have streams. Competitive pinball is super rough to watch live though. The average stream is like 8 hours long and major tournaments last multiple days.

If it's patched with the translation in the ROM file and not using a separate patch file to apply it, should work fine in SNES Classic emulator unless it's one of the unsupported titles. Otherwise you'll need to have Retroarch extensions

Trip to the national championships for #1 mostly. Bragging rights for everyone who doesn't really have a shot at that. The prize pool is only a few hundred bucks total like any other pinball tournament.

I got a big chrome ball 2 years ago. I was #3 in the state, but won the side tournament (or maybe some other big tournament with the same trophies) so I got one of the giant balls too.

RGB-fam I need your help. Is there anything that outputs analog and HDMI video simultaneously? Resolution doesn't matter. Maybe it's possible with a Raspberry Pi. I want to do some Framemeister input lag testing on the HDMI input compared to a CRT. It's easy to do when you start with analog video, since you can split the video to both the CRT and Framemeister. It's harder to the do when you're starting with digital video though, so I need something that outputs both.

I think it might be possible with an Xbox 360 but something that ran 240p Test Suite would be soooo much better.

Oh man do I love my area CL/FB groups...

This is a perfectly working modded Nintendo 3DS

later in the listing...

The bumpers sometime work and the shell and circle pad work but are scratched up, i don't have the time to fix this up but if you were to invest about 20 bucks into it you could find parts online and easily make this look great.

So let me get this right, the Super NT comes with the system and hookups. And you have to buy your own controllers AND you can now buy an adaptor to convert the signal BACK to analog? At this rate why not charge the $450 that the NT mini was and give people what they want?
