new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Well, alright! I'm more than happy to be counted wrong on that one. But, it just begs the question that much more: since its inception of the cartridge-based handheld system way back in 1989, why did Nintendo Entertainment System make all but OOONE of their portable systems region-free? What wrongs did we do to incur the wrath of the region-locked gods?! frown

If Neutopia (NEC TurboGrafx-16) loses by one measly little point, I may go rogue and play it anyway as February's RTT Let's Play Together Game of the Month. winking raspberry

It's a...it's another Zelda clone. But, it's a really good one by Hudson Soft -- the company with the little bee as its mascot -- so, you know it's quality. I just want it to win so more people can check it out and enjoy it. Lord knows everyone -- and I mean EVERYONE -- has played The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo). frown

@Cheap Bastards: Buy Neutopia (NEC TurboGrafx-16) on the PlayStation Network for the same price as a Big Mac meal.

@Lunar: Don't deny your true feelings. You know that The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo) is the better video game of the two. But, you also know that the true heir to next month's RTT Let's Play Together Game of the Month is Neutopia (NEC TurboGrafx-16). Follow your heart. Do what you know is right. love love love

Vote for Zelda 😍

I can't afford to get internet at my house right now so I have no way to even download this game and play it either. Plus pretty much everyone has Zelda and CAN play it. At least you would be able to play it.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo) is an amazing, fantastic, and absolutely incredible video game. It has more than earned its place in the hallowed grounds of GOAT. Nobody's denying that, least of all me. yes

But, in addition to experiencing one particular video game together at the same time, the reason @Lunar started up the RTT Let's Play Together Game of the Month is to open our eyes to things some of us may not have known about. That's where Neutopia (NEC TurboGrafx-16) fits in perfectly. Back in the day, it originally came out on a home console virtually nobody had and, as a result, virtually nobody was able to play it. So, let's fix that: right here and right now, thanks to the power of modern digital services such as on Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Wii U, and PlayStation Network for, literally, the price of a McDonald's Big Mac meal. yes

Again, is The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo) the better video game? Yes. But, at the same time, is Neutopia (NEC TurboGrafx-16) still a really fun video game that more people need to check out for themselves? Yes. It's as simple as that. wink yes

I have. I bought the NEC TurboGrafx-16 card a few years back before retro video game prices started gettin' flat-out stupid. I'd heard it was a Zelda clone and -- since I absolutely love The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo) -- I wanted to give it a shot. I was immediately blown away by how gosh-darn good this game is: the graphics, music, and gameplay are all really, really cool. If you want an idea of what I'm talkin' 'bout, I cannot recommend enough this YouTube review here.

Now, again, my nostalgia is super-high for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo). It's such a good video game, it's not even funny. But, I still argue that Neutopia (NEC TurboGrafx-16) is tailor-made for this kind of thing. Ultimately, I will bow to the will of the collective. But, until that clock reaches midnight, I'll do my best to sway opinion as much as possible. smile

I'm sure you mean what you're saying but it looks like 8 bit Zelda with Dragon Warrior 1 graphics just a little cleaned up.

I would play it but I have no (easy) way to. I'm seriously hoping Zelda is chosen though and not just because I would rather play it but because I definitely want to play it. It's already half way through this month and I haven't even started on the Streets of Rage games yet. Or Shining Force.

But that's for other reasons. Next month should be better.

Well she is actually too hot for Ryan Gosling but I know of zero women in my life who would ever agree with that.

But she is gorgeous and she has a ton of charisma. Plus I am partial to Latinas and Hollywood is not as culturally diverse as the right wing would have you believe lol. She is beautiful no matter what kind of girls you like most though 😍

Fellow anime heads (so like @DiamondDave and @dunno001 ??) I strongly recommend Angel's Egg.

Here is a youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIhKqaNp4Dc

Sadly never released in the US so it's the best you can do for now unless someone ripped the Japanese blu and put in subtitles. Given the tiny amount of dialogue in this highly symbolic movie, it wouldn't be that much of a task. But of course I feel hardly anyone has actually watched this movie unlike something such as Do You Remember Love (which does have a subtitle blu rip).

Anyway, great film, right up there with Oshii's best stuff. I am now in love with this movie and want to get a Japanese copy in some format.

lol, i had seen my brother play the last of us, so playing it myself knowing pretty much everything hasnt been a priority, so i really havent before, but im playing it now, and its quite good. at first the controls were almost a no, but quickly adjusted and am enjoying it, stayed up way too late last night on it. it suffers from some of the same things that failed to grab me with the first uncharted and so i never played that series again either but i plan on playing all those this year as well. naughty dog is very good at what they do but there is something about the gunplay in this game and uncharted 1 that doesnt feel right to me.

One of the few current gen games I did play. Well, actually I played it on PS3, got the PS4 version when it came out but haven't replayed it since the first time I beat it. Uncharted + Resident Evil with a bit of I Am Legend(the movie) vibe. Love the ending.

Tell me Ellie is not Ellen Page, I heard they made some adjustments to look LESS like Page since there was controversy as Page had her likeness used in another game during that time(Beyond Two Souls)

I put up the good fight. My games were pretty good. But I went 0-4. I went to the local game store and drowned my sorrows in the display case. I got Parappa on PS1 which I haven't played in 20 years. The timing in that game is weird as heck. How do you map 3 syllables to one button press?

Anyone interested in a TurboGrafx 16 turbopad and a Saturn 4mb card? Both look to be in VG condition but I don't have the system to test either, but if you are reputable here I'll take them back if they don't work. I got them both at goodwill outlet different times with nothing else related to either system to be found. Trying to get $50 shipped for both maybe?

Can you try to qualify in multiple states? I know Florida had some qualifying thing today.

For Parappa you almost need the CRT TV, as timing needs to be frame perfect. Which is the downfall of the remastered version on PS4...

Yeah, the top 16 of each state qualify (based on points earned in that state over the year). Trent qualified in like 8 states. I imagine he chose NC because we were the easiest pickings frown He's a super nice guy though.

I played on a CRT with headphones. The visuals are just weird. Parappas head is like 2/3 over the symbol to press at the perfect timing. I'm a bars falling down the screen kind of guy.

I give Ys 3 on genesis a B- overall
First quarter is rough, gets good, then last boss is the worst.

Graphics are flat, but has moments of really cool effects and design. The gameplay is also all over the place with decent level design and variety but aweful hit detection and terrible enemy placement. It's very short and linear I didn't need any info to get through unlike 1+2. Story comes together despite poorly written and conceived.

I am excited to play through IV and neutopia next month, beating both SoR and Ys III this month was awesome, but putting the genny back in favour of the duo makes me happy :)

On that topic. I am thinking of picking up a couple different color joycons. Is anyone interested in just one color on one side? (sort of like pick what you want and split the cost)

PM me or @ me to let me know if you'd be willing to do $40 and what you would want. I have not thought about which ones I'd want to keep. Just that it would be cool to switch out colors.

Got one in a trade, play SMO for a few hours. Bored, sold it. I was more interested in their digital shmups(Psikyo titles)

I guess I'll try it again. Are we expecting a new bundle soon?

Repro saturn/sega cd cases. Yeah I'm totally for it. If I had a large saturn or segaCD collection, would be nice to replace cases with nice minty new ones. This was a good idea on limited run's part.

Man I picked a bad time to send my Duo R to @Lunar lol. Probably going to be skipping out on the official GOTM. I still voted for it though, definitely worthy of people to experience it. I'd just beaten it a couple years ago anyhow. If you're lucky @Lunar that Duo-R might still have my save!

I'll be getting back into the PCE/TG-16 scene eventually, but it'll be of the Super System SD variety. Believe it or not I've not actually beaten ALTTP anyway. So I might play that instead lol.

Well it's like @Lunar has been saying there's a few different places to download it if you want to play it with everyone this month.

But I get why rebuying it feels weird when you were just able to play it right before this month.

Very familiar, but it's not as fun :p
Though the super system SD is emulation after all, just at a hardware level ;)

Likely not the way you're thinking. The hardware's spoofing other hardware operations probably though FPGA; at a base hardware level, your PC Engine's still doing all the heavy lifting, it's just that the instructions the PCE is receiving from the SSD is synthesized instead of being, you know, real. Bottom line, if we're picturing PCE emulation on a PC, and this optical drive replacement, they're doing two very different things in very different ways. This thing isn't so much "emulating" a disc drive as it is replacing it. It's probably streaming data to the PCE imperceptibly similarly to actual hardware, with all the benefits of not having to read from an actual optical drive, so you get fun stuff like decreased or eliminated load delays.

Yeah, I know. Same concept that's in some arcade hardware multi-boards (the good ones), and flashcart/everdrives. We're going to definitely need more optical drive emulation solutions in the future. That's why I also have a USB GDROM for my DC, PSIO for my PS1, and on the patreon for professor abrasive!

Hardware level emulation is the future for console preservation in my opinion and I'm a big supporter! That's not to say I'm not doing my damnedest to keep my old consoles healthy though... I should probably give my FDS another play again soon and see if it's still happy >.>

I'd say those are low-mid tier Ghibli. Of course, that said, low Ghibli is still better than a LOT of other series. And that price is fantastic for the singles. I was going to recommend the lovely BR Ghibli boxset, but it's gone OOP, and has become quite scarce. (The only seller with one on Amazon wants over $1000 for it.)

Looking over things, it would appear as though Disney no longer has the license itself. All of the Ghibli films, except for Grave of the Fireflies, are now licensed by GKIDS, and are distributed through Shout Factory.

That's where I'm at. I listed some stuff then pulled it back, I just need to think more. I sold my 3DO stuff. I think I want to sell Rayearth first, then just think about what to sell next. As opposed to just throwing up everything at once. Pick a few things here and there. That's my advice to you. It feels better that way, IMO.

@GreenCard200 I loved it, it would have been my game of the year in a year without persona 5 and nier automata. if you like persona and falcom games its like those two mixed, persona type stuff with action rpg combat. in my top 5 games of 2017, but I love anime/games based in anime high schools lol. not to dissuade you from the vita version if that's what you're wanting but the ps4 version does add some content in the form of an epilogue chapter.

ya this, Saturn is really spotty still and may be forever. processing power isn't the issue anymore that thing was just so overengineered. oYabause or however you spell it runs panzer dragoon and albert odyssey ok but burning rangers is bad. a beast pc can do wonders with ps2 era stuff, but you'll need two or three emu's for Sega Dreamcast to run everything, as there is no one to rule them all there. the ps3 emu has made great strides but is a year away at least id guess, and I haven't heard much news about the 360 one lately. oh and og xbox still for some reason doesn't have one, the scene never did it I think because the machine itself was such a good emu box.

Hm, Saturn is such a great system and Pseudo makes playing things a little bit easier, so I doubt I will ever sell it. I was taking pics of the CIB Sega Saturn system, I took it out, I just put it back in the box. I can't sell it lol. I don't think I will find another one in such condition.

Dreamcast is another keeper for me. I feel like Genesis/Sega CD/32X is ditchable. But I have a hard time convincing myself to get rid of them.

Yeah, they can't all be Princess Mononoke though.

Which begs the question what is the top tier here.

Probably almost everyone could agree on Mononoke, Totoro and Spirited Away. After that there is probably a lot of debate. I'm partial to Porco Rosso, Nausicaa and Kiki's Delivery Service. I think of those for sale at that link Cat Returns is the best.

Edit: Howl's Moving Castle is overrated. Don't @ me.

The new releases might be a better option for someone looking to get these movies. From what I can tell reading reviews they pretty much used the same transfer, kept all extras and in some cases added some mostly small new ones. The big benefit though is these aren't Disney discs. Wow is that always an improvement. You don't get spammed with ads for other movies before you get to the menu.

Shout Factory is a garbage tier company but if they are only distributing, that seems fine.

He really hates the dumpster fire dialog that you get in a lot these moe/highschool JRPGs (obviously Nier is different in setting/theme etc). I remember some of his posts awhile back on it. laughing out loud

lol I can see how the anime high school(persona/xanadu)/academy (cold steel) by day/hero by night thing isn't for everyone, I love it, and as long as they make good games I hope to get more of these kinds of games on the level of persona 5 and Tokyo xanadu, and less like blue reflection, which was not so good. the bar has been set really really high in this sub genre.

xanadu really had a lot of feeling in it, I love a game where the characterization and development makes you care what happens to these fictional people. there is some real tear inducing stuff in this one.

this is the closest a game has ever come to really feeling like im "playing an anime", it even replays the opening anime cinematic between chapters just like you are watching an anime show! so cool!!

side note from ghibli thing, howls is overrated, but not overly terrible.. id rate kiki above it.

ya if you have a really nice CIB I would imagine that is hard to part with, and you really cant emu that system well, so does make sense to keep. the others should be quite doable. I haven't tried any sega cd stuff yet, or wait maybe I have..i'll have to check the Nvidia later

@tonymack21 Blue Reflection is that bad? That is one I was considering trying at some point because of Gust. :/

As for the dialogue, personally I find that I will often end up skipping some. Like in Summon Night 5 there was WAAAAY too much text, I just want to srpg battle damn it. I think I moooostly read it all in Cold Steel, but probably skipped some of the small talk.

BR is one of the weaker gust games ive played, its no Ar Tonelico, which I hold in the highest of regards not only as a gust title but in general. it seemed really rushed, and its very bland, persona is so stylish and exciting, and xanadu while being less so than persona (though still very engaging, I mean comparing anything to P5 is hard) while it does recycle some environments in dungeons with palate swaps, at least they swapped them, BR uses the same 4 dungeon enviros, though it is explained why in game. the characters don't match up to persona or TX really, its like anime high school game lite. there must be something special about being a second year in a Japanese academy, as most things ive noticed seem to choose this. you aren't the little first year, but you aren't the big bad third year, I think this is so you can have some characters to look up to and some to look up to you, BR cast you as a first year, though it does make sense in the context of the story. though it doesn't make much difference in this game I guess, not sure why I mentioned it lol.

something about persona and TX compels you to play, you "feel" it, BR doesn't have that element, which I was surprised because I love gust. you'd have really had to have already played all the really really good rpgs out there to recommend this one, as persona and TX do this so much better. even as a magical girl thing it lacks some of the charm of a sailor moon type thing which seems like they kinda wanted to capture that a little but somehow miss. if I heard a voice or music track from persona or xanadu I feel like I would instantly recognize it, I don't think I could do that with BR. I mean hate to say such things as bland and forgettable about a gust title, as I love them, but I guess they cant all be ar tonelico.

I don't think ive ever skipped any text, I may have paid less attention to certain things at times, or with characters im not as interested in, but the characterization and narrative is what I love about this stuff so I usually try and pay attention though in some things it gets a little heavy I understand where you are coming from.

I'm generally okay with palette swapping. Somehow I finished Time & Eternity, LOL. Just 4 dungeon styles is kind of rough though.

I feel you on a game either compelling you to play or not. I just didn't feel it with Nier Automata so I dropped it. I know everyone seems to love it but I couldn't get into it.

Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura. love Tsubasa is another cool one too. I like Clamp a lot in general, I even have Clamp School Detectives on dvd.

ya nier automata really takes off later in the game, most of the way through path b I was pretty into it, though 9s was my least fav, and path C is amazing. that one contains my fav character of the bunch.

ya that, SM, CS and Tsubasa have something about them the BR just didn't have that feel, I know it was made on a smaller budget than p5 and tx but gust is usually better. I mean, if you finished time and eternity, which I will do one of these days,(actually have a lot of ps3 rpgs I need to play) you could make it through, but the ps4 really has some good rpgs with more coming, so its hard to recommend over so many others.

I almost started another gust game this weekend after finishing the last of us, nights of azure, been wanting to get on that for a while, but after playing some rpgs and knowing ill be into kingdom come deliverance soon I started assassins creed black flag since I want to get caught up on that series too and that's how far behind on that one I am lol, and a little rpg break, I like to mix something different in after a couple of long ones, and im resolved to watch more anime this year too, maybe binge a series inbetween long games too, really want to watch ancient magus bride. im waiting for word on ps4 cold steel before opening my ps3 copies, but I want to play them so bad.

One of the only systems I was really thinking of putting up in the steals thread was my dreamcast but not because I don't want it, just because they are desirable.

I would have turned right around and bought another one if someone had claimed mine though. I've had my Dreamcast for almost as long as I've been a member here and this is my second one only.

My Saturn on the other hand ..... I did not hold onto. I would have if I had gotten a copy of Shining Force 3 however.

As far as 32X I've always kind of wanted one just for Kolibri but doom would probably be fun and there's a couple of others that look fun. I do love cart based systems whenever possible.

Even sports games are fine as long as you vouch for them. Idk why but dreamcast had some of the most fun arcade type games I've seen on almost any system. Even titles that were on ps1 ps2 and n64 didn't seem as fun as the DC versions.

there are far more expert dreamcasters here than I, but i liked sonic adventure 1 and 2 well enough, skies of arcadia, grandia 2, crazy taxi, jet set radio, the 2k or 2k1 sports games i remember liking ok

I think part of what helped me get through T&E is that it was short and the game play felt very rhythmic.

My personal PS4 anticipating list: Yakuza 6, RDR 2, Shenmue 3.

Shenmue is really more of a curiosity if I'm being honest. I want to see how they balance trying to appease old fans while also trying to make an actual good modern game. This intrigues me a lot.

Nights of Azure is pretty MEH imo, but if you play it lmk what you think.

I decided to wait for PS4 Cold Steel to play the 2nd one after they announced it.

I think I'm going to play some NSMB U tonight. @DefaultGen will be proud.

yes

I'm not a fan of funimation either for that reason plus their somewhat dodgy releases.

With Ranma (Viz release) I was able to chapter skip the one ad on there to go right to the menu at least. When I'm paying good money for a premium format, it shouldn't be a more obnoxious experience than downloading and watching rips from the internet, lol.

In the sense that physical media is a fad sure. As with any format it depends a bit on the transfer but in general bluray is great. I've seen Cowboy Bebop on dvd and bluray now, and just wow. Same with Seven Samurai, just no comparison.

I am lezy and need to find a pre-patched version of the Nightwolve Ys IV. I might just send him a PM on PCEFX and ask him if he can link me to a patched up ISO. I am looking forward to checking IV out as I have 0 experience or knoweldge of it. I&II I've seen a bunch and tried to play the first segment of a bunch in the past, and III I've played quite a bit on SNES but not all the way through. I am a IV virgin however, so this is going to be mind blowing I'm sure ;)

Neutopia is pretty cool how it just cuts your money in half when you die so you can run through and figure out where you need to go and spend all your money frivously until you make a "run for it". It reminds me of darksouls like that, as when you die you warp back to the save point with items in hand you collected, loosing currency (instead of exp, thankfully) only. Very forgiving at the begining - I remember it getting higher stakes later. If I gave any tip it would be GET THE FIRE WAND ASAP. First things first, go grab that, and then use it the rest of the game ;)

ya i get the feeling NoA isn't gonna be top tier but i'll give it a go sometime i have both of them ready to go.

lol sounds like around here, its why i never even bother to look. i don't understand how people can pay so much for electronics and treat them the way they do, my NES from freaking 1987 still works.
edit: well it did about 10 years ago the last time it was hooked up, been in a box in closet for a long time

@Gypsy I did not get into Wii and DS one but I am sure they are good. I did play the DS one. I think it was a combination of things. Excitement about playing on the tablet screen, and a nice bump in graphical quality. It just looked and felt perfect. Loved the level design and the variety of the levels. They got everything just right in it. And I hope to see more.

I struggle to think of anything I hate of more. We need more games with the setting/dialogue quality of Dark Souls/Bloodborne, etc. They're almost nonexistent.

"Hunters have told me about the church. About the gods, and their love. But... do the gods love their creations? I am a doll, created by you humans. Would you ever think to love me? Of course... I do love you. Isn't that how you've made me?"

But okay I guess we'll get more games where the main character blabbers on about how they want to be a hero or I fight for my friends. I'll admit I enjoyed games about 12 year olds when I was 12 years old.

Yeah, the 3DO is on my attack list, along with CD-i, 32X, import N64, Game Gear, and possibly Saturn, Sega CD, and Intellivision. I prolly should try to trim this list some, too...

(In retrospect, I didn't realize how heavy Sega it was. Strange, especially since I was a Nintendo kid...)

I am an advocate for trimming, feels good man. Once I get confirmation of an N64 classic that is hackable I will probably move the SNES and N64 stuff. The genny for me is unique in that you can play it portable OFFICIALLY. I have so many new games with me lovin the switch, and then still having quite a backlog even if I just look at my DS, PSP, 3DS, PS1, PS2.

Of course I just bought a 3D projector with an 100" screen. Another passion of mine. I'm trying to decide where I want to spend my free time. Just do what you love. If you have enough time for all those games, then more power to ya. If not, like me. I'm trading some of one vice for another (large movie screen). I def need to play some of those absolute favorites of mine I never beat yet, like Earthbound, Shining Force III, etc. I've knocked many of them off, but still a bunch to go!

Backlog... yeah, I call that insurance against an all-digital gaming market. I've said that will be the moment I get out of new gaming. Actually, my making the wrong choice way back (N64 instead of PS1) coupled with my lackluster experience with RPGs (Quest 64, FF7, etc, coming off of things like FF6 and CT) did a good job of pushing me away from most modern games at the time. I started drifting back late in the PS2 era, only to be held back by consoles starting to have the same problem PC games had 10 years prior: a need to patch buggy/incomplete games. It was one of the things I always said consoles were better for- you get a game, and that's it. You get it right, or it goes down in history as a bad game.

Right now, I'm pretty deep in gaming, but because of my limited resources, it means my other hobby, anime, has taken a pretty hard hit. Last year, for the first time in over 10 years, my Got Anime? membership had lapsed, and I didn't feel an immediate urge to renew it. (I think I've placed 1 order with RightStuf in the last 6 months, as opposed to getting multiple boxes weekly from them.) I'm sure as time goes on, I'll naturally swing back toward anime, but for now, games take my cash.

Oh, but regarding trimming? I don't mean I'm selling/dumping games for the systems. That list was just the systems that I consider myself to be actively collecting with the intent of a complete library being my goal. 32X and GG are surprisingly close. SCD and Saturn, with the derpy price on games, are candidates for dropping. But I like collecting the things I would've enjoyed as a kid, but didn't experience. And after Virtual Boy, I took a look at whale games to rule out things like NES and TG16. (If I did collect them, I know I'd want a Stadium Events and Magical Chase eventually. If an MC falls into my lap for $50, then I'll consider it.) Systems with large numbers of games are also being ruled out after I looked at what 300 N64 games looks like. (1500 PS2 games? Not a chance!) Every time I seem to finish a system, I evaluate what I want to collect. Then again, other oddball systems are waiting outside that list to fight for my collecting. (NGPC, game.com, Odyssey2, A7800, and Nuon all are contenders. I'm really coming to the conclusion I like systems with few games.) But I still can't bring myself to things like the Jaguar or N-Gage. My next full-on experiment may be a Pippin...

EDIT: Nope, Pippin's out. Systems starting around $300, and the games are scarce as can be, most commanding at least $100 each.

I see. You are much more of a collector than I am. I still have my collector tendencies though (must be MINT!). But I'm trying to streamline my shelves as far as giving me the gaming experiences I want. I feel better with something more managable. I just want that authentic experience. So as long as SNES classic gives me that authentic experience. I do not mind not having a $100+ RPGs on my shelf. But I think if I had just ONE hobby, and a bit more money. I'd just keep all of those games on my shelf! Make sure you play that Star Control II soon! It's a beauty and deserves to be played!!!! cool smile

Yeah vita remote play is kinda cool for like a tech demo, but you need some uber speed wifi to make it even remotely close to like playing on your console, although for P5 being a turn based rpg maybe it wouldn't be that horrible. Any kind of racing game though stay far away.

Hmm. As someone who stick in and around the house (pollinator garden outside, games and theater inside) I guess it allows me to experience adventures. I guess it's kind of like reading, escaping into another world. Reading or experiencing a story. Movies can add beautiful soundtracks that make the story hit you in the feels even more so. So an RPG is a movie you can control. As it has the dialogue, the music, but you also control where the main character and party goes. Um also, I like the big special magic attacks and summon spells. I feel like by the end of the game, I've earned this much cooler looking special team that has all these flashy screen filling devistating magical attacks. All the while being rewarded with a story and characters I can empathize with.

RPGs or JRPGs? Because I have no answer for JRPGs. Playing through Witcher 2 again was such a breeze, just everything about the gameplay experience is better to me than a JRPG. Not to mention a much more interesting game world and it's shorter than a lot of JRPGs.

Those points are valid and I would totally agree with them maybe 10 years ago. I guess my lifestyle has changed so it's hard to keep up with JRPGs. They have been good as sleep aid when I needed it.
I think for me right now, the only thing keeping me playing older RPGs is nostalgia, that's why it's difficult for me to play an RPG I've never played before, because I'm burnt out before the intro movie ends.

It used to be, I'd be proud to finish the game, my characters are super strong, and I know the good specials by heart. And we have a save icon to remind us and prove that we have finished the journey. But now, if it's a cartridge, you beat it, unless you save it for eternity, the cart will be traded to someone or sold on eBay. If it's disc, it's saved on a cloud somewhere, and I will most likely never revisit the save again even if I start the game over, I'd want a fresh start.

Sorry to be so Debbie Downer on the subject of RPGs, but I think I am pretty much burnt out and nostalgia alone isn't enough for me to play(finish) most of these RPGs since they are 30+ hours of committment.

Don't be, not everyone loves the same things. You have a family, and children. I don't. RPGs are my little adventures I go on looking through a window. You are on your own little adventure. Priorities and goals change when you have a child. Nothing you say will take away my love for RPGs, so don't worry about it.

I just hooked up dreamcast to OSSC, will be playing the games I own and see if they can hold my interest, if not I think I will have more games on the way here.

My X'Eye I got from @Snatcher will be a keeper for me for a while. It works great and no issues on the CD department even with CDRs.

CDX was too fickle for me, I'd be afraid of discs, especially CDRs will just eventually fudge it up.

Damn, this would be too low but probably close to right. I'd want it to come closer than this to funding an X'Eye if I am going to sell it though. So maybe just list high on eBay, and bundle in some crap games and a Sonic set.

Without a DVDO, sound is kinda tricky if you want it to go through a soundbar or sound system. Luckily, the one I have have plenty of connections(3.5mm, RCA, optical, coaxial).

3.5mm is going through the OSSC, Dreamcast's VGA cable going into the soundbar directly via RCA, optical going through whichever modern system I am playing, coaxial is...unused currently.

Yeah that's the GTZ price I was giving you. I sold a similar setup for about $150 to fund my MKR purchase from you. I included a model 2 genny though and that also included a Japanese 3d Saturn pad and SOR3 cart only though. So reference that lightly. yes for the x' eye though, mine is currently on crt duty. Paid about $270 shipped sometime last year and it came with a few crap genny games and 2-3 crap Sega CD games. It did include the original ac, rf and 3 button pad though.

Nothing crazy left, I have a few games like Shenmue 1 and 2, Skies, Grandia, Lodoss that I want to play through before deciding to dump or not.

Also some are just too cheap to dump like Smash Pack, Blue Stinger.

I do have some imports, including a Typing of the Dead w/Japanese keyboard, one of those fancy see through ones, boxed.

RPG's as long as I can remember have brought me great joy. It takes my mind off of my disability, I got to be the lead and name the various characters after friends or ladies I was sweet on at the time hehe. As I have gotten older a good story keeps my attention although getting older has me working with my kids and not Witcher 3 or Divinity. Also I believe at least in my scenario a good quest has my kids wanting to help me, such as last night the kids cheering me on as I was playing dice with Gaspar and my son asking me this morning if I got the Opal to recruit a character (Dad I have a good feeling you are going to get it this time.....). As cornball as it may sound i look forward to trips with them to dusty stores looking for treasures and continuing to make memories. They do struggle to see how i can play on one game for so long (They are all into Fortnite at the moment)

@Lunar if you ever look to get rid of Skies of Arcadia let me know

yes this, jrpgs are really hitting a resurgence right now with some great titles.

I love them and still play them because I love narrative and characters and seeing them develop, and the good ones do this. I like anime so much for these reasons too. I really like the ones that feel like playing an anime like P5 and TX. I do find it harder to go back to some of the older ones, I find these modern ones like persona 5 are better designed than some of those older ones, but some stand up like radiata stories, FFX, DQ8, skies of arcadia etc. i'll always love those. they have a charm about them.

there are some really good ones coming as well, grandblue fantasy re: link looks amazing, Platinum is helping with that one. edge of eternity looks good, lost soul aside, smt5, ni no kuni 2, there are def some good jrpgs coming soon, P5 really is a perception changer, and hopefully its going to kickstart a new golden age in the way that FF7 did.

Really? I always waited for the sales at RS, with GA I would get 46% off on most anime. Amazon was always the exception for a fluke sale at 50%, and even then, the titles were usually more restricted. Then there's the ~40% off manga too- something that Amazon used to do, but hadn't come close last I checked.

Yeah Amazon has been cheaper on most of my recent purchases. The Lupin movies were barely better through RS but I also don't pay for GA.

So, with NEC PC Engine Duo-R back in my possession, I'm gonna start listing the RGB IFU on eBay.

I will give a window here for anyone wanting a crack at it.

It will not include a controller, I need the controller currently.

RGB nodded IFU Briefcase with lid, OEM PS, PCE white system, CDR2 system, Jp21 scart cable, system card 3.0 CIC.
Remember, you'll need a controller. Looking at around $300.
I'll post some pics and a more detailed post later
