Thread Description Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.
Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.
Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!
Old Topic Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.
We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates. There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room. I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them. There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is . I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).
No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Yeah I beat it yesterday afternoon but I guess it would have been night time in New York. Or early evening.
I started working on Streets of Rage 3 last night too. But I only got through stage 3 and had already used a couple of continues and realized I would not be able to beat it AND Streets of Rage 2 before midnight my time.
> Did anyone walk away enjoing SoR more than SoR2 like I did?
There are a few things I liked better about it actually. It had a more old school feel which I do really like. Some of the stages looked really good like the muscle beach was cool with the waves washing up. Maybe not better than the amusement park stage from SOR 2 but the games are different enough that there's reason enough to play both.
I wasn't too into the music but then again I'm into old school punk rock mostly with alternative rock mixed in. That was actually one of the things I thought all of us on RTT could do together this year too, is create our own music and share it here. Maybe have competitions or something and use specific games that have music creators to use to make the music. Maybe not but it could be fun and get people excited about doing stuff here.
Mario paint has a music maker in it for instance. But there are many more advanced (and thus usually way more complicated and/or frustrating) music generator games out there on various systems.
Anyways I played SOR 2 twice before January so it's harder to compare the two games side by side right now since my memory is already fuzzy on it.
So this VGA cable from Polish cable make thefoo83 (ebay username) is pretty good. Right now he is working on some more with a switch to trick games that will work in VGA but are not technically compatible. Very good solution for under $30 shipped.
I compared directly to the box I'm sending to DD. It's close, at least on the CRT monitor I tested on. Certainly close enough for me.
I work in telepresence and have customer complaining about motion handling today. They don't have enough bandwidth for high-resolution, 60fps video and they're complaining about crappy their $100k+ system looks in motion. I go to work, tell people 30fps is bullcrap, come home, go on forums to spread the word that 30fps is bullcrap. High framerates are my life.
> By the way that new God of War game, 30fps on PS4 "Pro" for a first party flagship
> game lolol. So cinematic.
I've always been of the feeling that I would rather put that extra HP into higher res textures and more graphical effects over frame rate. 30fps is perfectly fine for an action adventure non competitive style game.

eBay, 350.00 for just the system. The guy got it in Jan but it broke, he sent it for repairs and wants to send it direct to me just the system once he gets it back from Microsoft. It will still have almost a year warranty so I am cool.

It's totally fine to send them in a mailer. It's just that some people (particularly large eBay/Amazon stores) don't exactly use common sense when shipping stuff. Plus it's super low value so if it gets damaged it's w/e to them.
Someone bought a $130 sealed DS game last night and I'm contemplating sending it in a box. Not because I think the case would break but because they might dog about it. This buyer buys seemingly hundreds of sealed games a month and sometimes leaves negs or positive feedbacks with negative comments. I wonder what his seller account is

That crossed my mind and its possible, but I think he's just very particular about the condition of the plastic wrap. He was asking what deals I could make him on other games and asking specific questions about the condition of the shrink wrap. Its probably gonna be a headache that ends up with him returning the game because the shrink wrap has scuffs on it and leaving a negative commented positive that I call ebay and get removed.
> Lol Twin Galaxies, the MySpace of competitive gaming.
I really liked MySpace, it was the original social media account I had. It was my original "place for friends" some of those friends however had some pretty weird ulterior motives. Some of which were of course very welcome 😉
Definitely harder. Tougher AI, the handling is squirrelier and it's easier to crash. The framerate is worse, but the Hornet and menus look like the arcade this time and the music is all original unlike the screwed up versions in CCE. Man, I wish we just got a physical arcade port instead of all these wonky versions I think I prefer this one just because the car graphics and music are so much more nostalgic.
Anyone wanna buy wireless N64 controllers? I just found one at a thrift store with no receiver, and have another one with a receiver already, it may take me a couple weeks to find it in whichever junk box its in, but i will if there's interest. Doc's wireless N64 controllers.
Also common systems like PS2, Xbox, N64, PS3, Wii,360 Genesis, NES, GB GBA etc, if anyone needs any relatively easy to find game system I've been hoarding them and probably have multiples of it. Gonna work on listing those on ebay soon.
> man, too bad you can't get the JVC controller in USB form
I gotta set up the gen/cd emu on my new computer but I can't wait to try it out. Well made replication controllers like the wireless 8bitdo SNES classic controller and this hyperkin G6 definitely add to the experience. This has been really fun streamlining my collection. I just want to play a few scd and gen games with an authentic feel. I don't really "need" $300 and $100 games sitting on my shelf. It will be nice to finally play Snatcher without spending $500. .
I'm kinda half way now. Emulate where an authentic feeling controller is available. Keep what is not easily emulated. Still going to hang on to and . And just due to the PSOne and LCD screen I have ready to play in my computer desk drawer. Plus has so many RPGs I love it's worth it to me to have the system.
> Hyperkin? HyperCRAP is more like it. Something something diarrhea fountain.
Eh, not everything they make is crap. The g6 has a 4 star rating on amazon and I've gotten it in and it has a nice weight and feel to it. Extremely close to the original. I can't even really tell a difference when holding it.
I'm sure the controller is fine/usable though. I just use a random USB logitech controller for my old emulation and it's totally fine. I probably paid like 50 cents for it I don't even remember but I know I'm a cheapass.

Much more fun to use the guncon. Also easier, at least it was for me.
Going to go start Neutopia now. wife has the flu, house on lockdown lol
Working on paying for MKR, but wondering if anyone has a nice boxed NES games package or such i can look into?
Also going to go on a retro gaming run next month when my bonus comes, if anyone lives near northern kentucky maybe we can meet up and go shopping, grab a bite to eat and come back to the house for some gaming??
> Going to go start Neutopia now. wife has the flu, house on lockdown lol
Let me know if you find the Rainbow Drop. I'm pretty sure the hunt for the Rainbow Drop is taking me longer than the rest of the game combined so far. Other than this, the NPCs have really spelled out exactly what to do.
Edit: Found it right next to where I learned about it... I backtracked through the rest of the entire game, arghh.
> I did manage to go out a little while ago and free shining force 1 from the jail

I miss having a HPB close enough to go to regularly.
I just bought a bunch of blu-rays with @DefaultGen 's money. Waffled around a bit, canceled some stuff but settled on more Ranma (almost done now, also thanks to @DiamondDave for very fair values on OAV/movie set and set 6 LE) and some ARRRRRRNOLD movies (I almost have all his pre-governor films on blu now. Sometimes, you just wanna watch some crap, lol.
Ok @diamonddave and our other emulators. Can you help me get my gen6 button pad working with RetroArch? I love retroarch because you can have box pics, and it can act as a central hub for all of your different systems. But retroarch's default input mapping is for a 4 button with 2 analogs controller. How do I program a 6 button genesis pad into retroarch?
> Spoiler alert Neutopia does NOT give the flu! Hehe
It better not 😉 It'll be hard enough to find without that added hardship!
Oh and btw I don't even read the whole thing when somebody starts talking about games I've never played and starts talking strategies. I got to rainbow drop before I was like "oh hell no! Shaddap you!"
> @ErickRPG, don't fall into the pit traps of emulation, by the time you tweak all

Eh I don't agree. I've already started Earthbound on the SNES classic. I'm just going to use Kega Fusion instead of RetroArch for genesis/segacd. There are just a few games I absolutely want to play. This is just about being able to play them on a authentic feeling 6 button controller so I can sell the few games I own.
> If not in a rush to sell, why not play those games on original hardware then sell
Why play em on the cart if I'm gonna sell the cart? Main thing is I'm moving toward playing newer games and I just wanted to make sure I could get this controller working before I sold my SCD stuff. Doesn't matter. I'm using kega fusion and I already have a genesis and scd rom set of my favorite games I downloaded years ago. I already got the 6 button controller working.
main thing is owning all of those games made me feel like I HAD to play them. Streamlining my collection to just the newer stuff, which there is already enough to keep me busy for years. Makes me feel like I can play what I WANT to play. Instead of HAVE to play. That is the reason. I mean I can play Snatcher and Keio and Crusader of Centy now. Which are all super expensive, but I want to play them.
If you have no qualms about emulating, then CDRing them shouldn't be out of the question. You could just burn some CDs and play Snatcher and Keio. Crusader of Centy is a fraction of a price in the form of a Everdrive.
I'm not against emulation at all, just seems counter-productive to me that you get rid of original hardware to play emulation, and buying new controllers for it etc.
Not really counter productive when you consider the hardware and games I own will bring me in $1000+. I mean if you are at the point you are burning CDRs then it doesn't matter either way does it. Remember I can't sell on Ebay like you all, it's not easy to sell $300+ games outside of Ebay. So this saves me all the stress of dealing with adding something that expensive to the collection.
I'm just trying to get my collection down to a more emotionally managable number. I think I'd still be at around 10+ systems even after my new "purge".
> Yeah maybe I'll play the super expensive stuff on the emulator, the rest on original
> hardware. I just need to stop thinking just because I own a game means I have to
> play it.
Sorry if I came across as antagonistic, not my intention at all. I feel like I have been there that's why I am saying this. To an certain extent, I am still dealing with an acute form of [whatever this condition is].
[whatever this condition is] - the feeling of having to play everything you own before getting rid of it.
Like I have spent an exorbitant amount of time before, tweaking around emulators, I'd hit a road block, find a solution(usually hours of research forums online), I'd test different controllers etc.
I spent so much time on it and didn't get to play games at all. By the time I got everything set, I was burnt out.
With easy systems like Saturn(Pseudo Saturn) and Sega CD(CDR ready playable), I would just play the games you want, if too expensive, trying burning CDRs. And emulation can always be a back up way to play.
PS2 and PS1 are also easy, I have a modded PSone with LCD(same as you), also have a modded PS2 and Japanese PS2 for the random games. Prob gonna get a PS2 LCD at some point.
By modded you mean modded to play burns? The LCD is super hard to mod I hear. Aren't PS2 LCD's super rare? I searched and barely found any.
I like my set up for PSOne, I like my setup for SNES. (I think SNES classic is great because I can play the fan translated RPGs in English, so it's everything all in one small box, nice a workable with a pretty interface). Just not sure where I'm heading with the gen/scd route.
That first response sums up all hat I'm saying. Prove it, but he will not because he is scum. Although I would not go as to threaten his family (if that indeed is true) he deserves every amount of crap he is getting. Provide proof, simple, clear your cheating ass name.
The A+ answer was Pop'n Twinbee but Detana and Yahho would have got a passing grade. First Twinbee is kinda trash, esp on Famicom. I'd play it if it gets voted for, but I'd hope not. If we vote for an NES shooter it should be Zanac.
> Yeah zanac or sms alest would be a fun challenge.
Aleste 2 hyyyype.

Yeah all the "Ray" games are pretty good tbh. Underrated series from Taito.
Mars Matrix is excellent but I will also throw the Giga Wing games out there as well as Border Down. Those are the 4 really great ones that are still locked to Dreamcast. Everything else, and I love the Dreamcast, someone should get on other consoles unless they just really love the Dreamcast.
Seems like the shmup genre is wide open and there are many different styles to like.
I probably mentioned this a few times already in this thread but I'm a Psikyo guy, anything by them is
Just bought Strikers 1945 II from eShop, I hope they keep pumping out these. They need to come out with a screen stand that can turn tate, shouldn't be too hard to engineer one that takes after one of those car mounts that attach to the windshield.
If anyone is looking for a short, free game to play, Streemerz is freaking awesome and it only takes a half hour or so. I'd heard of it but never played it because the stupid name (it's a reimagined mash up of a broken Action 52 game and Bionic Commando). It's got infinite/fast lives like Super Meat Boy, so it won't roadblock you if you just want to play it once.
Also, is anyone here an expert when it comes to game hacks? I'm in need of help with translating a ps1 game. Basically, the audio and text file is stuck in a .dat format and I'm looking for the best way to extract and import it back.
Just throwing this out there, but I think our game of the month should be something that's not stupidly expensive. So I vote for Detana Twinbee, Life Force, or Legend of the Mystical Ninja (I know the last one isn't a shmup, but I don't care).
I personally like having a longer game of the month, since it means people will be playing it (and thus discussing) longer. A shmup could a bonus or high score game, since I doubt anyone is playing through both Neutopia and Zelda ALTTP just for this thread

I've really wanted to. I'll get my ass kicked, use escape wings and like, the dog won't heal!
WHY WON'T THE dog HEAL? I'm not paying no 200 gd gold for a potion, outta here with that nonsense. I didn't think it was possible for a game to be stingier on life up drops than LTTP, but Neutopia's breaking records
You only need to remember 3 people caves: the two closest bomb and potion shops in the first sphere (because I'm not dealing with those overpriced late game shops) and wherever the nearest medic fangirl is, or just go back to mom. There's nothing to do with gold in the game except buy more health potions, so I didn't have a big issue. I got some sweaty palms if I was about to die to a boss thinking about grinding my health potion fund back up though.
I didn't play Elemental Gearbolt, @Gypsy. I'm waiting until my girlfriend wants to play with me. I did play Spriggan. Lots of the weapon seems to suck. Green Green Green or Green Green Yellow are the only super effective ones I really like. If you have random orbs you're pretty screwed.
Analogue hinted that their next project is Sega related. I hope they remake the Genesis, a console that already works, has RGB and component cables already available, and costs like $25. Paying $200 for a Genesis is basically as ridiculous as paying $500 for an NES.

I would like to get some Guncons yes. I have a PS1/Saturn combo that works fine but I'd like to get the Namco one for PS1 and a PS2 gun (presuming this matters and I can't just use a PS1 guncon for everything).
I was looking into getting that 8bitdo stick in hopes it was similar to the those capcom fightsticks that I am super familiar with, and I could mod out the stock buttons and stick, but now I am wondering if they're not as similar in shape and innards.

I think you can mod the 8 bit do stick, but I didn't want to.
This may be a good a time as any to unveil my new fightstick. For the cost of a Virtura Pro Saturn joystick, this is built like a tank and can be played almost anything. All sanwa buttons and Brooks Universal Fight Board. I think the only modification I would do is the gate and possibly put a plexi on it to make it look like a candy cab.
> Is that your stick Lunar? 17 buttons (and 2 cables?) per player? That's close to
> the MAMEest thing I've ever seen.
As I said it has a universal Brook board in it so it should play most things. It has a db25 port for Supergun and with an adaptor can do db15 controls (neo geo) and with the USB a interface it can do most modern system.
It probably could do a game if I wanted to, but it's milled steel and weighs like 25 lbs.
Thanks, I might just buy a single player version. Any of you arcade stick lovers can you recommend me a good single player one for hooking up to PC (maybe USB i guess?). I don't really need 8 buttons maybe 4-6 buttons + 1p, enter coin etc. .
what is the budget on this? I bought stick a few months back and found it in my research this is a product that you get what you pay for, the hori rap 4 kai was 150, and I really like it, it feels good and hori is about the only thing most serious stick players recommend that's not sanwa. for another 50 I could have went qanba obsidian but wasn't ready to commit 200 at the time not sure I was gonna like it. I was going mostly for fighting games though in my thinking.
ok, just wondering so might know what to recommend, I shopped them pretty heavy just a few weeks ago, but was mostly looking at stuff like the rap 4, qanba obsidian, dragon etc, mostly plastic casings, I didn't really look at any metal ones. this rap 4 is durable so far, and has pads on the bottom to keep from sliding in your lap or on a desk, and more could always be added.
Alot of serious players like the te2. I couldn't find them at that price when I was shopping for sticks, but if you can get a good condition one at 120 they are really good.. I don't like the square body's that much though so I'm glad I got the hori with the more comfortable shape to rest the wrist... I might've dealt with it though had I found a good condition one for 120 lol
You could just skip the mediums or hards and remap. I think you can remap, right?
I don't think I've ever found any use in going between soft, medium and hard attacks, usually I either want to deck someone or I want to jab them, and just go between hard and mediums depending on the character I'm fighting
Do you think the Japanese Post Office has legitimately raised their international rates to a near-obscene level or is this just the old tried 'n' true method of the eBay seller looking to squeeze a few extra bills on the back end like a dog?
> Wow...I would've just canceled the translucent pre-orders and asked them what other
> one they'd prefer at that rate >.>
But then they're stuck with a bunch of translucent Super NTs.
The fact that those sold out first during the initial preorder (and they STILL haven't updated their pictures, mind you, so they're still advertising something the customer won't be getting!) should explain how powerfully those pics advertised that model. Even the black looks better, but honestly the stickers they put on the controllers to match the systems seem pretty dicked in general.
If I were getting one, I'd stick to SFC or SNES, honestly. But you should throw all four out and save $150. Get a SNES, or an SNES Classic. It's not FPGA, but it's also not grossly overpriced.
> Do you think the Japanese Post Office has legitimately raised their international

Untracked you can still ship a single game out of Japan for like $3. Some super lightweight method, I've used it before for single cheap games from sellers that charge exact shipping. Yamatoku used to ship untracked (SAL I think) but they had a lot of scammers out there that said packages never arrived. So now everything has to be sent registered air, which even when I started heavily importing was about $9 for a single game. Over the course of 12 or so years an increase to around $14 isn't too surprising, though they might be rounding up a little, I'd have to ask one of the facebook sellers.
@gypsy its been forever since we traded, lets make something happen dood. DD that Super Cdrom 2 is back tomorrow from getting refurbed and rgb modded :) Its coming with a Core II and matching controller, I can barely contain the excitement.

I read on some forums they do shill bidding (can't confirm) but I wouldn't be surprised if they made money off of shipping. Their feedback has people complaining about being banned for complaining about it.
ebay has gotten so crooked, I almost always just use BIN if its something I am having trouble getting here or on amazon for a good price. I rarely bid on auctions anymore. I need to get into these ebay bucks you guys talk about though
Feh! Those eBay Bucks are small potatoes. What's the best incentive they've ever done on those: a measly ten percent of your total purchase? The real deal are those eBay Flash Sales where you get fifteen bucks off a seventy-five dollar purchase. That's a twenty percent discount right there! Boom!!
