new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

I feel like RayForce (Layer Section/Galactic Attack*) needs to be in the mix here. It's the right mix of top tier while also being affordable. Anyone that likes shooters needs to play it, imo. Now, what do we run up against it in the vote? Are we dead set on doing a shmup or do we want a different genre for voting purposes. We should probably wait a bit longer before doing the poll, so just some stuff to think about.

*So stupid that this game has three official names.

Maybe there should be a scaling where those who finish the game gets a bigger weight.

Finished the game 1.5
Started the game 1.0
Nada .5

Yea, it's early enough in the month so we can let it stew. Shmup vs Platformer?

I don't know which is a better versus. Genre or system, or mix of both.

This means I gotta track down who played and who didn't.

Increase in voting power needs to be a pro-active action, the player needs to tell RTT they beat it.

Starting the game is easy lol, finishing is the hard part.

I think we should definitely rock some gen 5 action after the recent choices. Good to mix it up.

Also @DefaultGen is sometimes done with the game the first day of the month and will use online tips or strategies to do it. Some of us actually take our time with these games and finish them all on our own.

If PS1 vs Saturn, i feel like PS1 wins hands down as PS1 is just more accessible (playable on PS1/2/3 and PSN on most of the popular titles)

Lunar 2, Arc the Lad II, Vanguard Bandits, Metal Gear Solid, Symphony of the Night.

Pretty stock picks mostly. VB likely isn't able to show up on anyone else's list though. I'm a sucker for strategy games AND mecha.

Okay this is actually much closer to the true stock list. Just replace 8 with 7 probably.

I'm not big on FF at all though.

Okay going by @Dashey s list

Since I love Resident Evil and Tomb Raider way better than their first sequels

1. Tenchu 2
2. Suikoden (1 or 2 I have both copies digital on psp)
3. Wu-tang shaolin style (fudge that's such a good game!!!)
4. Tomb Raider 1
5. Resident Evil 1

The next two (three?) are just for fun

6. Koudelka
7. Deception 2 or 3 (I love killing evil people with that little girl)

I'm sure I'm forgetting a million awesome games but I was seriously hoping we could play a brand new retro shooter (at least new for me anyways) if Resident Evil is put up against a shooter I doubt a shooter will win though.

hmm, Silent Hill vs. Resident Evil

I feel like we have had this convo, but it was not actual vote for GotM

We could pit SotN up against something equally captivating and huge.... what could it be?!

Actually that's another easy part, I thought the end boss was way cheaper. Plus the first time you meet the twins is kinda cake because you can still special them to death. It's more about proper timing on that standing back kick.

I actually liked playing against the twins even when I couldn't call for backup lol.

Wouldn't disagree with you on this, I was just talking about the broader, widely held opinion with FF7. Personally I didn't care for 7 much at all.

Any list that doesn't include PaRappa The Rapper is objectively wrong.

I just played Parappa and it didn't even make my "I sure can't think of a great 5th game" spot in my list.

That just means you're objectively wrong.

blasphemy @Dashey lol. 8 is really good though.

FF7
FF8
FF9
Tekken 3
Metal Gear Solid

hard not to bump mgs off for xenogears or suikoden 2. I love sotn also, but I cant bump one of those FF's or tekken 3, on any given day any of these three might switch out with mgs, maybe.

Not liking vintage Konami means you probably shouldn't be playing old games tbqh.

I was definitely not forgetting the blandest, easiest (albeit longest more or less which makes it harder to finish since you might fall asleep) game in the Castlevania franchise.

But if that were put up I would still play it. It's still Castlevania which to me means it's better than almost any other games in any other series but I still would be sitting there daydreaming I was playing a more challenging and fun Castlevania lol.

Like I seriously beat Castlevania 1, maybe two or three times in a loop one day. Since I wanted to beat "hard" mode and see if it got harder again. It did not.

I also beat Ninja Gaiden two or three times. Mostly because it helps my sharpen my timing on other games. And because it's such a fun game!

Arc II is kinda massive though. It even has a full game prologue (Arc 1, which is like a 10-13 hour game). But it's like, the right kind of massive and hits all the right notes for me. I played through it recently long after I quit playing/loving JRPGs as much. It really brought me back and had me by the balls.

I played through Silent Hill half a dozen times in the 90s and always got bored when playing through RE1 frown

Old RE games suck. I'd say don't @ me but you can @ the fudge out of me on this one. Hate that tank control bullcrap.

The series got way better with 4 and I'd play 5 over any original style title!!!

I have to strongly disagree. In my opinion, 6 leveled the plane off in the greatness. 7 had the pilot thrust the stick all the way forward (for those who don't know, that is a sharp downward), telling the passengers to look at the pretty graphics! 8 was the pilot breaking the stick off in the forward position, saying, no, look, as the plane crashed into the ground. 9 tried pulling the stick back, only to have 10 crash it back down. And the FF series never got back off the ground, though they keep trying to fix the plane..

Wtf? I HAVE TO vote Silent Hill by default against RE2 just because the first (and coincidentally also Code Veronica and probably RE3 which I never got to finish so I can't really confirm that theory) is SO much better than it.

Also any tomb raider (even 2) gets my vote over anything else basically. Lara Croft is just one of the best main characters ever! And the physics while climbing way high up on tomb raider games actually induce my vertigo so there is that. It's kinda cool despite getting dizzy from playing a video game.

RE5, the most underrated RE by the "TRUE FANS" who only want crapty tank control RE. I think it did OK critically because it was at the height of third person shooter everything.

Also why the hell has no one else brought up ANY Twisted Metal or even Wipeout games?

Those two series are so much fun!
