new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Marble Madness (high score, because I can't even beat the last screen frown )
Contra (shortest time)
Super Mario Bros (shortest time)

I've had one for years the only reason mine is messed up is because I was storing things on our back patio and a raccoon knocked over a ton of boxes one of which had my Jaguar CD player in there. Now the stupid latch won't shut ...... although I'm sure duct tape would probably get it working. 😞

Plus for the record other than the fat 360 systems (I've only ever owned slim 360s) the most unreliable manufacturer I can think of is actually Sony. I had 2 PlayStation systems break everyone I've known who bought fat ps2s all had theirs break and don't even get me started on PS3 😞

But to be fair the psps and the psvitas are probably the best portable systems ever with psps being my favorites. PS1-3 are almost guaranteed to break at some point in my experience.

i had an opposite experience, my ps1 from 95 still works, my fat ps2 worked from day one til well after i got a ps3, launch day version that was backward compatible so i sold the ps2, and that launch day ps3 still works. i baby baby baby my stuff though to a level that bieber would be jealous though. im not saying others don't, but knock on wood ive never had a console fail ever, not in 30+ years since 2600/NES. my brother had a couple of the first 360's RROD on him though, i never got into 360's til the elite's with falcon chips came out though, so if id had one of those maybe.

We took care of our ps1 systems other than playing them all day and night. That might be why they broke so fast. But we bought the first two right after they came out. Within a year.

Those first model 360s fail naturally. The heat separates some crap inside the console I don't remember all the details but it isn't pretty.

Other consoles that absolutely 100% require repair: Turbo/PCE Duo, Super CDROM2, Gamegear, Phillips CDi. These all have fundamental flaws that prevent these consoles on all original parts from working now. There might be some that I missed, and I don't know the details with Jaguars so I can't speak to those. It does seem like a piece of crap though lol.

@BleedingViolet PS1 and PS2 both have crap lasers, if you play them a lot they will wear out. The PS2 I've been using lately is on it's way out.

That sucks 😞

I have a ps2 slim that seems to work great but I've only played Mega Man x 1 on it.

And yeah I've never owned a fat 360, but I thought they worked after their first repairs? Not that you should ever have to expect to have to repair something you just bought. That's effing stupid.

i wouldn't be surprised if that fat ps2 i sold doesn't still work now, id bet it doesn't. i sold it nearly 12 years ago, but it was pretty faithful up until then.

ya the 360's were a design flaw, no matter what you did to those you were in for it, i know my brother had to send those old white ones in at least twice, may have sent more than 2 in. even the replacement rrod'd. that was just terrible design. oddly enough one of the fixes that went around was to get it even hotter and that was supposed to somehow trip something and make it work again, not sure how that was a thing when heat was the reason for the malfunction in the first place lol

i had a cd-i, it wasn't the drawer load Philips but rather the Magnavox with the lid. it was pretty faithful too til i sold it, sometimes wish i hadn't. the power cord on those was rj45 looking cord and the piece that snaps it broke but it still went in and worked.

There is a battery buried under a fake chip in the CDi. Once it dries up that's it until you fix it.

On the game of the month: I am awful at stealth games so looks like another month of Okami and/or Miitopia.

On systems going kaput: only ever had a Saturn and PS1 fail on me. Our big PS2 is probably on its way out too, but one of our church friends gave us a slim... So we should be OK. smile

I'm surprised on the Sega Saturn dying. The only issue I have ever had with a Saturn was the spindle getting pushed down and the cd was too close to read properly.

If you change settings in the CD player that can prevent it from recognizing game discs.

I don't stealth at all in MGS. I tranquilize and murder everyone one by one. I don't want no one sneaking up behind me.

The solder would melt on the 360's, separating chips from the board and also the board would warp...I think. I had two RROD on me, the design was terrible. I still have a fat, the Halo 3 edition, but I don't use it. I was forced to use it for a little while because my original console RROD'd days before Halo 3 launched. I was nervous that the Halo 3 console would die. Luckily MS sent my original back fairly quickly.

The "fix" was to wrap a towel around it after it went RROD (and keep it running) to possibly melt the solder again hoping things would go back into place. The slims are so much better. Even with all of that mess the 360 was a very successful console. Imagine if that design flaw wasn't there? I wonder how much better, it at all, it would have done?

I just have the Neutopia rom and nothing else (other than the OS) on my SD card and the game eventually randomly wigs out. Either a graphical glitch, or I'll warp to the wrong room or the game will just crash.

Try a different rip. Could be the ROM, not all roms are equal. I know the one I used I didn't glitch up to dungeon 3.

Hm. How early was he glitching? Like I said, up to dungeon 3 it was flawless on my IFU. I've never seen an Ever drive produce glitchy gameplay tbh
