new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Yeah but that's so bulky. Those are so 2017.

Or PVMs or old line doublers. I only paid like $15 for my Saturn scart and it was from retro access. Got in before the cable price boom I guess.

I've got my systems all planned out. I'm ditching the bulky upscalers and going with emu boxes and components. SNES classic, NES classic, N64 classic. Gen/SCD Polymega, TurboCD Polymega. PS1 LCD, PS2/Cube/Xbox component, DC Akura VGA, Saturn component. Everything else is portable or HDMI. Polymega is also a backup for N64 if N64 classic never comes out. I'm all set. Now to continue the backlog.

HDMI is great though. Better than futzing around with scart. It will be a great day when everything pre-PS1 has an FPGA kevtris console.

whats the advantage to something like that over just emu'ing that pre ps1 stuff? are the visuals on anything pre ps1 that much better?

The companies have to actually want to do it. I doubt we'll ever see a sega genesis one.

For me it's more of a complete experience. Let me use OG controllers or build a controller just like the original. And give me a spazzy IU that can have box pics or game pics instead of just selecting text to play a game. I'd rather play it on my TVs that have insane PQ than my IPS computer monitor.

retroarch and gamesome front ends can supposedly do the box art but ive never bothered to download them, one day I may. gamesome is cool but a little cumbersome feeling to me, retroarch is a little more user friendly, but there are def improvements they could make. I may just be more used to it, gamesome is supposed to be nice once you get it going. I play most of it on my shield so I can play on my big tv, or stream it through the shield from the pc depending on the game, you can add anything to steam and play through it, its pretty cool, link up a dual shock 4 or xbox controller to your shield and away you go If you don't like the stock shield controller, which the 2015 isn't spectacular the newer one is nicer.

Not having to tinker with settings and being able to play from real carts. So I don't think anything you care about @tonymack21 also I just think they are cool.

@ErickRPG Well you can set up emulators on wii or just hook up a PC to your tv (not sure about snazzy UIs though). Also there are controller adapters for everything to pc. It's a great time to be into old games, so many options.

Dealing with retroarch is atrocious and requires a neckbeard*.

*No offense to any neckbeards in the RTT

I thought Retroarch would be dead simple since everyone seems to use it but there's like a 10 minute Youtube tutorial to set up anything. No wonder there is a community dedicated to fudging with setting up emulators and noodling with them rather than just playing the games.

ETA PRIME and Simply Austin are both great channels for setups. I admit I do at times spend more time messing around with a lot of emulators and seeing what it can do rather than just playing at times, but I think its pretty interesting in a way. I would change a lot of things about retroarch to more resemble gamesome but with easier setup and something more akin to the NES/SNES classic homepage.

Complete experience (playing) would be as simple as original hardware and original software. On a CRT if you don't upscale or have a PVM. OG controller would be a given.

Upscalers don't have to be huge, ie. xRGB mini or OSSC (Line Quintupler!) And scart is the way to go.

Retro games don't need 1000000000:1 contrast or 10 billion colors, because you know they are 8 bit and 16 bit consoles with limited color palettes.

I don't have a problem with emulation and occasionally use it myself but man, you have strayed far from the path young padawan.

Needing a mint game to have the complete experience is your downfall vice I think.

Nope, I agree, it's a fudging mess. Even when I got it, I hated it.

@Lunar OSSC is like, tiny right?

I wouldn't want to go above 27'' or so for 240p content. I use a 27'' Sony CRT for local multiplayer, it's pushing it on the really old stuff but it also has to be big enough for split screen of PS2/GCN games. So it's as close to the sweet spot as I'm getting for what I use it for.

My arm is broken-ish I haven't been able to do certain things left handed yet. Although I am actually pretty good at writing (and drawing badly) left handed considering I only just started within the last year. And I've only even bothered writing left handed maybe 10-20 times altogether?!?

So I haven't shaved lately ..... 😞

It has been. Pain isn't a big deal to me usually but I have lost a lot of range of motion in my right arm. That is not cool.

Well it's not true I need a mint game any more because I plan to emulate many of the past systems. The thing with OSSC you still need a scart switch if you plan on having more than one system. And I had this thick male to male scart (to send the switcher signal to the OSSC. It was just a bunch of clutter. That's why I'm going with a single cord solution from now on.

Don't you need a component switch if you plan to connect more than 1 system?

I think hooking up one system at a time solves the clutter and focus problem.

I also didn't like the fact of the OSSC needing to have another controller and it wasn't an auto smart switcher like the DVDO was. So I had to fiddle around with an extra controller each time I wanted to play. DVDO is nice but then you need a manual audio switcher. Just too much bulk and clutter for my tastes.

Can you play Sega CD roms on the Retron 5? I know it has a port for genesis controllers.

The amount of fudging around you need to do in order to make the Retron5 do anything remotely useful is not worth the time invested in doing so. Abandon it. You will get Kega Fusion up and running on your PC in a fraction of the time.

No no no, you still need the actual cart to play. And I LOVE retron one but there were a couple minor glitches on two of the games I played a lot on it.

They were minor to me but they might make someone who spends a ton of money on perfect video setups angry.

In Ninja Gaiden 1 when you first turn the system on the screen is all scrambled/glitches out. Once you press reset it's fine. Everything looks and plays perfect but it does this every time I've played on retron 1.

In Adventure Island 2 in the snow level of 4-2 or 4-3 or something the screen literally rolls on you as you're playing it. It's the only stage that happens with and the only game it's happened on BUT there are problems with certain games.

Thanks I'll stick to my Nintendo classic systems. Still on the look out for something that can accept an OG genesis controller with a nice GUI.
