new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Same here. I like Q3A, but UT is way more fun.

I only ever played Quake and unreal games on my Dreamcast and OG Xbox. The only shooters I played on pc was way back when I was still a teen, and they were Doom (of course) and Heretic (or Hexen I can't remember which was the original name on pc) maybe wolfenstein 3d at some point. And yes I REALLY liked Heretic (or Hexen whatever) even compared to Doom.

Anyways as far as comparing those two game series I always preferred Unreal. Those were the types of fps games I really liked besides Doom. Anything with a more arcade feel to it is fun. Kinda why the Dreamcast was such a great System.

When Quake III came out I was slightly disappointed. I LOVE Quake single player so it felt too eSports-y before that was even a thing. Not like I didn't buy Team Arena as soon as I could though. Just focused on fast paced deathmatch, the gameplay is outstanding though.

UT99 I always thought was amazing and I've played the crap out of it.

For me UT99 = Quake > UT2K4 > Quake III > Most other video games.

I remember sitting on my grandparents couch unwrapping Unreal Tournament 2003 for Christmas and feeling like the future was now. Little did I know it was going to be utterly obsolete in 2 months to the Unreal Tournament 2004 demo.

What were we talking about money?games? I'm not sure how much money I will have anytime soon though.

I know I haven't gone through all my stuff and listed it like I meant to, I'm still kinda getting over this flu. Or maybe it's not gone idk.

I've gone for one walk in two weeks it was at night and I came home drenched in a fever sweat. It was fun!

Yeah no mod required! Its gotten mixed results on amazon, I think its highly dependent on which revision xbox you have, but I have 3 different ones I can try so we shall see. Supposedly looks a little better than component with a brighter picture.

Yeah it will probably end up similar looking, but I don't have anything else component that I need going to hdmi so its not killing me to have it tied to just the xbox. Also you would have to have a decent xbox component cable already laying around for a converter to make sense, so you would probably be out much more money going that route. This makes sense at the list price but for sure not at the ridiculous ebay scalper prices.

Really? okay I've got a better one for you about ten years or more ago when I used to go to Disneyland all the time with my friends and or girlfriends I rode on the trolley or horse drawn cart with Mick Foley. My friends (one of them loved Mick Foley, but she was really young and shy at the time) I was like omg you guys there's Mick Effin Foley lets go get on it and talk to him.

Anyways he was really nice a gracious about me chatting him up and I told him what a big fan of his my little friend was. He would have talked to her too but she was so shy she couldn't even turn around and look at him. It was a really cool experience. I went into the princess shop at the castle and could not find an autograph book in case we saw him again. Oh well good times nonetheless.

I collected comics and comic trading cards heavily in the 90s during the boom. Over time hobbies other than gaming have had to go, only have he time and money for that and gaming is great hobby because you can do it when you have time as opposed to something like a bowling (which i was actually super good at) league that's not on your time but a set time.

Yeah, just on the US side of things, including Japan at that point is way too much even for me.

And I'm not laughing about the program. It was by the maker. It pulled info from Amazon, but apparently they changed their API, and the maker couldn't be bothered to fix it. Shame, too, because it was so much cheaper than the alternatives I see out there. (I paid $30 for the license, whereas others want to charge me more than that for just one medium.)

Oh I thought you were making a joke about your own tracking of your collection because you had so much stuff you quit bothering.

As for me it's all in my head mostly. Though for books I do have some checklists printed off so I don't get too many duplicates. Still do end up with some though but buying super cheaply usually a quarter or less...

No, I liked it because it prevented me from buying duplicates. And it let me track anything that Amazon sells. (And things they don't, if I enter it manually.) It did my games, anime, manga, art books, CDs... anything I threw at it. (It also told me how rare one of my anime DVDs is- I couldn't find proof online that it even existed!)

This one's got better games than SUGC, but sacrificed Sonic and ...Ecco I think. Steam's the way to go if you've got a PC, that also allows for romhacks.

I track games here but not really DVD or bd at all.

Picked up a couple criterion sets and an anime set at a local store sale during lunch. About $35 cheaper than ebay not too bad.

Was also able to help out my homeboy @tonymack21 with a farcry 5 at a solid price and even trading it to him than a bit less than I got it for cause he is a good guy that does people on tz solids.

This is a port of the current set on Steam, including the all new UI overhaul they did a while ago (with the room and stuff.) It has a few different games... I'm personally hoping we'll get those games as a DLC update on Steam, but I doubt we will.

Edit: The Steam version had Linux and Mac versions, and achievements added. I guess they'll go live on the 29.

There are also rumors that certain games will get removed from sale... but I can't find any info on that.

I like that the trophies for each game range in difficulty from dancing the hula in Toejam and Earl to beating the entire game Streets of Rage 3, which is probably the hardest game in the collection. I was going to make fun of how simple it was to become a "Retro God" until I saw that one. I'd say the title if appropriate if you can beat SoR3.

George Herbert once wrote that "Living well is the best revenge." With that in mind, the best revenge would be to retaliate with a good video game. As far as which one to pick...oh, I don't know...

I only have 1 import N64 game: Super Smash Bros. And it's staying with its Smash Brethren in my collection. Never really got into import N64; I got SSB because someone here was willing to trade it and I'm too cheap to spring for a physical US version.

I told benstylus I really wanted that Fantasia for my nephew. In that condition for 17 no way I was going to wait. I lost Castle of Illusion waiting too long ..... twice.

I did look over his collection though for the next round and I'm pretty sure I won't be jumping on anything right away this next round unless there are hidden surprises 😉 Or insane starting prices.

Does it have the same problem as the first game? Specifically...

How the first half of the first game was great, but when it became running through everything again and again just to fight stronger bosses, it lost me fast. I never did bother to finish it...

I know that what I'm about to share is vintage video game heresy of the highest order. But, I don't really like Toe Jam & Earl (Genesis). I played it back it the day when it was originally released for the Sega Sega Genesis 'cause my friend down the street had it. But, try as I might, I just couldn't get into it. Despite its nice graphics and sound, the gameplay was just sooo slowly paced. While I'll still follow the herd off this ledge, I'm a little worried that y'all've kept your rose-colored glasses on for this one. frown

It's basically just demand and desire. A game like Jurassic park operation Genesis on OG Xbox is a game I would pay the stupid current asking prices for but when it came out I didn't realize how good it was so I was more obsessed with going to Disneyland with my homegirls. But if I ever get ahead of all the bullcrap going on in my life and have extra money I'd buy it for way too much now.

Other games like certain overpriced ps2 games I don't get though at all. Haunting Ground is a game for PS2 that I do totally understand though. That game looks great to me.

Speaking of spending too much on games, I'm thinking of picking up the Taiko no Tatsujin Switch game and a drum controller. Hoping to get them at a somewhat reasonable (for imports) price, so please help me keep an eye out (difficulty: no Play-Asia. They can fudge right off.).

1) Their customer service stinks. It took an act of (insert minor deity here) to buy a PSN card simply because I forgot my password.

2) They latch on to certain trends and use that as an excuse to overcharge (recent examples: Pokmon 2DS, Famicom Mini).

3) Failure to keep their 18+ listings separate from the rest of the site. Their search doesn't even give an option to hide those listings like Right Stuf. If I'm searching for Kirby, it stands to reason that I'm not likely to be interested in the latest in resin-figure-shirt-removal technology.

4) Their social media team has a history of rudeness and pandering to the lowest common denominator. (I guess that explains #3.)

Any questions?

Well recycling as much as you can is sometimes a reward in itself.

The world needs our help people. The best way to help is sharing as much positive information on not only
How to recycle, but what items are biodegradable in the first place, as possible. There are people making paper out of elephant droppings (no, I'm not joking) in another country. I'm not the best example of being not wasteful, but lately I've been hoarding jars and bottles to put out by the dumpster so the people that recycle don't have to work as hard to get my recyclables. I'm turning into my gramma more or less now I guess. Which reminds me I gotta really start cleaning some of these jars.

I get why going to a recycling center sucks. I always feel kinda ripped off knowing how much these people are making off other people's hard work, I try to think about how much worse I would feel thinking about these plastic soda bottles ending up in the dump or somewhere else. And it's hard to be okay with it knowing that's directly my fault, and because I didn't recycle it they have to create more bottles and it is no Bueno. Doing the right thing makes up for that sting of getting ripped off.

6 weeks sound really damn awful. Was this actually for a serious crime? I know court cases can be reaaaaally drawn out but a lot of that occurs before it gets to the point of having a jury.

I wanted to do this last week but I figured I'd wait because of Memorial Day.

I'm actually holding this earlier than I wanted because I need to have the money by the 22nd - the date of my Passport renewal appointment - because sometimes folks take a little bit longer than I'd like to pay off their auctions. It should give me enough time to ship everything off, too. I won't have a passport for a couple of weeks and US Customs will not like me taking a lot of crap across the border without my passport. :P

Good luck with that, @longhornsk57. Apparently, in the secondary market, vintage video games are valued by their weight in gold. It sucks, too, 'cause this actually looks like a really cool title. frown

So how likely do you guys think a gameboy classic from Nintendo is? How likely is an Nintendo 64 Classic to be officially unveiled by Nintendo at E3?

N64 classic 100%, maybe not at E3 but it's comin'. Either that or they're releasing an "N64 compilation" for Switch.

I wish they would do a cool Game Boy classic handheld. Just jam half the library on that sucker and SHIP IT.

Idk Nintendo likes to keep things under wraps sometimes when they know how huge it's going to be. They still have yet to rerelease the Nes classic. I'm assuming it will be the exact same Nes games as before but something tells me they might do something to bump it up to their $80.00 price point.

Also I love a few N64 games most notably is Diddy Kong Racing but even for just that one game plus maybe 5 common randoms it's worth it. That game is everything on N64 if it's not there that will be sad for sure but there are many others.

I'd say there's a 75% chance it's at E3. There are rumors that there will be footage of the next Mortal Kombat game at E3 I cannot wait for the next MK game.

Mileena better be back!

I love DKR as well. Def have a small handful of ultra most fav of all time on the N64. If it's like SNES classic you can just hack it and put the entire library on it, lol. Also they announced the NES restock is June something. I think it's late June like June 23 or something like that.

Even if they don't I would just hack it and put a crap ton of games on it myself. I would love that, since I tend to bust out my handhelds more often than turning on my consoles.

It would be cool to have a Goldeneye and Perfect Dark box and 4 new controllers to tote around when hanging out with old friends. Since Goldeneye and PD won't be on it, who cares.

Yeah GoldenEye was the best 4 player experience ever.

I dunno something about playing the original carts vs these classic systems I still prefer the feel of original hardware.

I think my pt was pretty split between Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.

I'm...not opposed to playing on emus when I need to but I am close to original hardware only. It's part of the experience for me. Hell I also don't really even like watching movies/shows digitally or on a PC. It doesn't really make any logical sense. I think many people have switched to digital movies.

We are living in a great time for people that like to play vintage games, not so much collecting though. CD burning drives are dirt cheap, optical drive replacements, everdrives, basically perfect emulation etc...

I think the big appeal of the pi is tinkering or dicking around with it. That or for people that don't have easy access to buying old computers for cheap. The big issue with pi is it is more expensive than it looks, I got one for a friend who loves emus and the costs just pile on because you need a case, a power supply etc...

I could have got him a much more powerful old tower for less. CL/fb marketplace is littered with old towers.

The games don't do much for me, too primitive, and I didn't have fun when I tried any. Not huge on NES era either, but have played and enjoyed games on that console and others in that gen. Once it gets to PCE and then GEN/SNES that's really my wheelhouse for vintage gaming.

I think I just missed the boat for caring about Atari. If I were say 5+ years older, it might be different.

Yeah I hear that. How old are you?

For me it's nostalgia and if I've got some friends over and we've had some spirits as it were it's fun to play those games and try to get anywhere with them, but for actual gaming fun purposes they're definitely lacking.

30.

In general I really dislike cryptic old games. I can enjoy a good adventure/vn type game but when it's supposed to be an action game and you have to read the manual that's just not for me. As far as old party/multiplayer games, I'd rather get up to at least gen 4 for that, preferably even newer.

Yeah it varies.

I've got the Wii U set up with 8 controllers for Runbow and Smash, and the switch with 4 controllers for MK8D and ARMs, and we even play the Jack box party pack games on PS4.

but sometimes it's fun to try your luck at an old crazy wtf game. It's basically like Mario party where like let's grab this random Atari missile game and see who can score highest with only 3 tries etc.

How relevant is the condition? It's a hot seller here at a high margin, but sometimes we get ones with beat labels etc and sell them cheap - I can look in the overstock/trade piles to see

That should be a photo of the 3 games I have here. Figuring $50 for the 3? Delivered in the U.S. That's just a little more than Kirby costs alone. Or $40 for Kirby + Final Fight works. I looked for a Link to the Past with a beat label, but if we had one we did sell it already. I found a Mario world with half the label missing though - only 10 bucks!

I might've been looking for some Wii U sets ultra cheap for giggles, but only if it's like $4 bargain bin.

Were there any lego starter sets cheap for 360?

I would assume the same price, I would need to ask a worker to open the case to check what all is in there as they were all thrown in there. I think I seen Wii U, Switch , PS4 and Xbox One of Imaginators. For dimensions I only seen PS3. They had other random stuff on clearance as well like most Wii U games marked down to $20-$30 (Too much now, but maybe later they will get more). Wii U lego city was $10.

One other option is wait for the last few days of TRU closing. They still had a few sets at 50% off, which is too much, but if it goes 80-90 and they are there it would be a good deal. My TRU had almost no Dimensions since the closing was announced, so I assume they got shipped back or something. They had every character just after Christmas, and tons of them. So no idea where they all went. They have maybe 5 different characters and those are the once that have been on clearance for like a year.

Imaginators at my TRU are 60% and almost totally gone now frown I was hoping to pick some up when they hit 80%. So I just picked up some crystals for $4 a piece.

Games are 50% off but nothing left worth the asking price. The games left would need to hit 80% off to be a deal since they are marking everything up to original MSRP. For example Nioh for $60 is still overpriced with 50% off.

East-coast friends:

Please read this Twitter post from graphic designer Brady Hartel. He had his collection stolen, and is looking for any helpful info:

I know we would be devastated (or at least hopping mad) if this happened to us, so I think we should try to help if we can.

When a guy split off from another game store locally back in 2005 I remember he took most of the good stock in the split. When he opened his own store he had 5 copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga lol. Anyway he is a very shrewd businessman he is also now the number one MTG seller in Lawrence and they deal with anything nerd now basically. I haven't been in there in forever because the prices suck (last I knew) but for awesome stock, it's a paradise.

Well the somewhat good news is if he is correct about it being sold off that makes if a lot easier. Most criminals are pretty stupid so quite possible everything was dumped in one place. I've seen that happen locally. If they were a bit smarter it is going to be more difficult.

Wow thank you for all the info 😊

What are imaginators?

I guess I just found my first Bing or swagbucks search of the day!

Reached out to them. We won't see that stuff in the store but I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to off it at a convention sometime soon.
