new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Honestly it's kind of unfortunate the way eBay does their fees, I wish it was instant.

But yeah it's close to what you would have netted here on 20 shipped anyway.

I just wish Japan could pace things properly instead of doing a huge rapid exposition dump because the end of the show is coming. Escalating everything for the sake of it. All the Trigger shows have this problem too lol.

Shows from other studios, shows I like even, have this issue as well. It's pretty much one of the worst parts of anime for me. Top 5 for sure.

Spoiler alerts! I don't want to know any of the cool stuff I'm going to see in this game until I'm playing it.

I'm probably going to have to play this one before finishing the other two.

So Tales of Vesperia coming to switch, KHIII looks amazing. Good E3 so far and we haven't even seen sony and nintendo's shows yet.

Not to mention a new trailer for cyberpunk 2077.

When did this start? Did they mention anything about a new Mortal Kombat? I'm hoping a new one will be here next April or May.

You're not going to find a replacement. Find another game that has the stabilizers and just swap the back panels.

Of the games that had them, some (most, all?) games didn't come with two. Here's an awesome screenshot from Youtube of someone opening a Stunt Race FX. It's just for grounding so you only need one. Your issue is probably something else.

Got through first level of Arrow Flash unscathed, but that second level kind of freaks me out with the fast moving space scenery, so I need to practice that a bit. Should probably get this done on next weekend. You guys using rapid fire or do you leave that off? I'm not a huge fan of having to repeatedly hit the shoot button.

Might just need a good cleaning. Looks to be in almost perfect condition otherwise. Could even be the snes, some other games start right up, others don't. The games look to be in great shape.

I was using a junky cheapo USB controller that I paid like 50 cents for so no auto-fire for me. Maybe I could have configured it in the emu but I'm lazy. If I would have had an easy option for it I would have used auto fire.

whats something in an older game that everyone says or thinks is hard that isn't really, or isn't for you?

when were playing tmnt nes as the bonus game a month or two ago I cleared the water level first time, and didn't struggle with it when I was young either, that level was not hard then and its not now. its small, you have plenty of time to get the bombs. other kids always thought I was lying when I said that wasn't hard.

Contra and Ninja Gaiden are oft complained about being super difficult; NG only really had one restrictive reset at the final boss that I found to be terribly challenging (but it is a time waste) and Contra, I just don't get. Very clearable game.

Yeah Contra and Ninja Gaiden weren't as hard.

i was really good at Battletoads, and I found most people found that game impossible to beat, or even get remotely far into.

Honestly most old games aren't as hard as people say now. Especially younger people getting into older games now that are used to easy af new cinema games.

One that goes perhaps in the other direction is Nexzr. It was unreasonably hard for me. I don't know why I struggled with it so much. It was definitely just in my head at one point lol.

The hard parts I can get past (Turbo Tunnels), but that's still a hellish game to complete. I don't think I've managed it yet, but it's just something I need to put time into and get the repetition practiced.

No no Tony, playing mostly RPGs for the last ten years makes your hands lazy, not that I blame you for turning autofire on or anything ..... spending 10 straight minutes spamming the B button is not fun on my damaged arm. But I'm still not going to use my rapid fire even for that button.

If I don't "get good" using arcade sticks I'm not going to be any good when the next Mortal Kombat game drops.

Believe or not they JUST had a tournament for MK9 and Sonic Fox (the best current player on netherrealm fighting games) lost the grand finals to a bunch Kabal dash spam AND with my favorite character Mileena. He's a great Mileena player but he's limited to playing her like everyone else does I would have possibly been able to beat that guy or at least made him switch back to Sonya (A terrible matchup for Mileena but I would have maybe held my own or countered with Sindel who is also decent against Kabal if you're patient)

Either way watching the best player making mistakes I knew the answers for was hard to watch. Mileena has weird timing with her air moves and when you corner Kabal you can't out frame trap him really but back door teleports will eat him alive if you mix up the timing on them. Plus I really like Sonicfox and I think the guy who beat him is a typical flowchart frametrapping nerd (curbolicious) who does the same uninventive crap you always see from online Kabal Sonya and Cage players. I really wanted SonicFox to win that damn tournament yo! Plus he's a freaking Furry! He literally shows up wearing a giant furry hat or helmet. So effin weird but I like him.

Well I don't want to reiterate what I've said before but FOR ME Ninja Gaiden 1 isn't as difficult as Castlevania 1. I want to say it's just the bosses but once you know what you're doing in both games Castlevania is justway more difficult for me. The last two stages in both games start to really ratchet up the difficulty but Castlevania is just harder to avoid certain things on the levels unless of course you use the holy water trick.

I also found the final boss on Mega Man X to be super cheap. But I still got it finished even though it felt like the game LET me win the last time I played that boss. Other than that it felt like no matter what I was doing I was getting hit without being able to avoid it. I'm sure there's some pattern that I am not aware of to make it easier but I couldn't figure it out.

What's the difference between a PS4 and a PS4 pro? Is it really that big of a deal? I'm only asking in case I ever get one. But yeah I have two OG Xbox ones but I had no interest in trading them in. But I guess if it's that good of a deal. How long is this special deal good for?

Edit: nevermind I just noticed it's only good this week.

Also where the fudge are the Nes classics that were supposed to be restocked? I'm still seeing people selling them with prime on Amazon for $150.00.

PS4 Pro does NOT support 4K Bluray.

What it does is support 4K Games and apps like Netflix. It also supports more detail and higher frame rates.

Xbox One S does have a 4K Bluray player and 4K Netflix but not 4K games. It does do HDR in games and movies.

I was laughing so hard, I put in Skyrim to impress my roommate on his new TV and within ten minutes I was like "So okay, I'm gonna go grab my PC and I'll play some Witcher 3 and GTA5 in 4K instead." and he was like "Nice, fudge this". Even Skyrim stock on PC was better than PS4 Pro overall. Better sharpness, framerate... just better. Sad. I got the PS4 Pro back in my room on my regular TV and honestly couldn't tell you the games looked or played any worse on a slightly smaller display at a "quarter" of the resolution.

Basically PS4 Pro is for when you want to play PS4 on your 4K TV and you don't want it to look like ass like it would if you were just upscaling 1080p (which checkerboard rendering isn't doing anything MUCH more complex or functionally useful than that when it comes down to it). That's it. You get to pay extra for that. Congraturation!

That's pretty salty, you having a bad day?. MS is worth more than Sony, so they know how to make money even If this gen they lost the console battle.

Sony sells more because people care more about exclusive games than disc based movies.

My comment was about hardware costs and I don't think an Xbox one S costs more than marginally if any to make than a PS4 slim.

They don't make money on the hardware from what I understand anyways. as a consumer I prefer the PS4 Pro over the One X because of the games, but I do wish the Pro had a 4K player I had to buy a standalone system just to play 4KBR discs.

Sony charges more because they know they can. It's been this way for as long as I can remember across their brand, not just with video game stuff. It bit them in the ass early with the PS3 but they learned their lesson there and the PS3 became a juggernaut.

This is absolutely 100% correct.

Yeah, game consoles are for consumers who call 30fps a silky solid framerate, first person games with analog sticks, and paying to use their own internet connection. No reason to try to appeal to an enthusiast video market with a product intended for the unsophisticated masses.

positive only in the RTT baby.

You had/have your Tad Youtube show. By sheer numbers, it's probably the most viewed GTZ content, beating out the old podcast, the RTT podcast, and Donlad's Youtube videos where he still talks about GameTZ.

No, they were being 100% truthful. The Classic Mini is the closest corollary, in that it is an emulation box. There's a solid reason they didn't compare it to the Super NT, because at that point they'd be committed to the lie.

I still think the FPGA "hybrid" line is about 95% bullcrap. They may use it to speed up a few things (NGCD load times are pretty good for reasons I cannot explain) If the FPGA actually exists (possible/probable) and functions to assist in console reproduction (highly doubtful) but I guarantee you all the modules give you are controller ports, cart port, and unlocking of an emu core on the base unit. They COULD have given you a non-crapty Retro Freak, but why do that when you can keep selling off pieces at $60 a pop? Rape that fudging nerd wallet.

1. FPGA w/HDMI out
2. Online Store with licensed games for sale (Hopefully a better price structure than Wii Shop since you are selling readily available roms)
3. Built in support for Twitch/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter (Hopefully better than the Switch)
4. Support for Original accessories (at least controllers, we don't need a redesigned garbage controller with no d-pad)

How hard is this?

FPGA is hard. There's a reason only Kevtris has managed to hammer out FPGA stuff.

Instead let's sell an overpriced emulation box that can stream emulation for $250 + $60 per Non-CD system! RPi can do the same for $25? Feh!

It might've been this where they said it's not "pure" FPGA. But since internet retro gamers are in a frenzy where FPGA = THE TRUE EXPERIENCE, I feel like if the consoles were simulated using one, they would be touting that chip like it was 1989 and we just discovered blast processing.

I didn't get the term FPGA Emulation hybrid from nowhere, I know this. It was in the marketing at some point.

It's not "Hybrid emulation", it's emulation, lol.

I'm fine with emulation, I'm not fine with misleading marketing terms painting a misleading picture on what they're doing and why they're charging the prices they are. "Invented" indeed.

If you want to can rip carts onto internal or SD cards if you aren't picky about it being emulation, there is already a product for this.

RetroFreak does this for Famicom, NES(with converter), Genesis/Mega Drive, TG16/PCE, GB/GBC/GBA, SNES/SFC, SGG(with converter), I might be missing a system or two.

Super NT can do this for SNES/SFC games with a simple hack and it's FPGA!

Polymega, I will judge when there is a more detailed report on it.

Ok that makes sense.

I think I would rather just build a small pi machine that emulates my entire retro library since it would be cheaper and smaller than overpay for this thing, but I can see why people would be interested to a certain extent.

To me the whole point is to play original games on original hardware. If I am not doing that I'd rather just emulate it all, but others may not think the same way.

The only region protection is the different pins. I'll have to get an adapter to play NES carts, but I don't foresee wanting one any time soon.

Speaking of which that NES above will also include an NES to Famicom adapter. Same price.

For those wanting Skylanders Imaginators I seen a tweet saying Five Below got some starter sets in. I'll head on over tomorrow to check it out.

edit LMK if anyone wants a set so I can pick it up while I'm there. I don't think they will last long at that price. Probably all gone if they were in store today.

In the tweet I seen Xbox One and PS4 starter sets, the crash adventure pack and enchanted forest pack. Also seen some Animal Crossing amiibo in the pic, but I think $5 is too much for those.

My store has plenty of xbox one, ps4, wii u and xbox 360 starter sets. I'd say 15 of each. They have 20+ crash adventure packs, 5 enchanted forest adventure packs and about 10 different characters. The characters they had only 1 or 2 of each. Not sure if that is all they had since the spot they were in was small, might be more in back.

I seen Wolfgang, pain yata, ember, chopscotch, ambush, blaster Tron, grave clobber, bad ju ju, the girl with water guns

Also seen earth defense force 2025 for 360.

I seen no amiibo at my store.

edit stopped back by on my way home and these are going fast. Half of the xbox one and ps4 starter sets were gone, only 1 enchanted left and almost all singles are gone.

I also seen some of the destiny mega blocks there, mostly the single packs, a few sparrows and a few interceptors.

The DC port plays fine but it buffers every bit of audio. And by that it means that any noise can take up to one second to actually play. The disc drive never stops moving around to read these audio files.

It looks and plays great, but it's a pretty crappily programmed port.

Well, buffered would mean that it's all pre-loaded to play as required; if it's having to search around for audio all the time, it's likely it's NOT buffering audio, you're enjoying the seek times as it goes to play the effect it's looking for.

It's certainly not doing it any favors. Badly burnt ISOs on backups can also have the same effect, where the game's expecting tracks to be in a spot but they're in another spot so it's gotta go looking for it. I did a custom music injection hack of MvC2 once and a couple of the tracks had wonky behavior during saving, notably the menu since that's where... all the saving happens I guess. Good ISOs front-loaded blank space to reduce seek times with such considerations in mind.

Fighting Games

Puzzlers
RPGs (not necessarily jrpgs either)
Arcade Games
Cutesy farming sims

Actually I love all types of games besides most multiplayer fps games. So a top three wouldn't work for me.

I like arcade type games I can jump in and out of easily because certain games, take Gladius (on OG Xbox, PS2 and GameCube) for instance or Morrowind. I will literally play and play and play until I do everything until I have to come back to reality. And because I had to come back there are still things I probably haven't done in Gladius.

I can become obsessed way too easily if a game is good. I know that's the point but, I'm not sure how healthy that is for me. I mean I won over 35,000 ranked matches and lost close to 10,000 I want to say, in one fighting game. That's not even counting ranked tag team matches or unranked tag and regular player matches. It's a little insane. It's probably a good thing MKX wasn't as good as MK9.

Oh and Harvest Moon ❤️

Well, Wiimote tech sucks. On the other hand, this is PC only, looks laggy in the video, and there are zero technical details for your $159 gamble along with a promise to have no further tech details before launch, despite claiming to have a patent.

On the third hand, just get a CRT for light guns.

PS1 version of Lunar 1 is much better than Sega CD imo. But Lunar 2, Sega CD version is better and it's not close. I've been over this too many times to repeat all the details plus it's late. Hell I bet two or three of the times were in this thread or somewhere on TZ lol.

I'll need to replay them both to see what you are talking about. It's been too long, and honestly due for a revisit.

You would have to play them both it's a lot of small things that add up. SCD version tells the story a lot better in subtle ways. Okay I'll get off my bullcrap now.

Still fun though. Mario is like the only SNES crap I care to own. The Galaxy games tried some new crap. Super Mario 3D world was very fun. There are things to do beyond just beating the game if you want a bit of actual challenge too.

I see the 3D ones as a subset of Mario.

All 3D Marios are like Mario 64.

All 2D Marios are like SMB3.

Galaxy is super different than 64. Do you even Sunshine bro?

I LOVE 2D Mario it's the GOAT so I don't care if those are all the same. Even if there are quite different 2D titles.

Yo, I love collecting crap and looking for secrets, but I thought the whole get 100% stars or whatever coins, got old. So in the newer 2D Marios, I ended up rushing through the levels as fast as I can. And eventually, just not wanting to play anymore.

How do you even like platform games. I WISH all 3D Marios were like 64 since the level-cubes are my favorite format. Although I like the Galaxy games more than Odyssey so level design wins out either way.

Mario games are like 4/10 challenge for the levels and 6/10 challenge for the coins. Gotta get those coins, especially early on when the levels are simple to run through.

Also you'd like New Super Luigi U, it's all short, tough levels. The timer starts at 100 every time.

Beat these: Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Power Blade, Bucky O'Hare, Shadow of the Ninja, Shatterhand, Rockin' Kats, Chip n' Dale, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, Batman, Contra.

You probably already have more than half of them, but come back and tell me you want to play Super Mario Bros. instead.

Lunar's brain is expanding rapidly. The fireball is a small part of Mario, whereas all of Contra is shooting. It's a shooter/platform hybrid (run and gun) that's much closer to a shooter in core gameplay. Is Metal Slug also a platformer? image

My Arrow Flash just came in yesterday, it's not a horrible game.

My wife saw me play the first level, said "my turn" and grabbed the Genesis controller. Got 90% of the way thru the first level before game over. Said "fudge this I'm done" and handed it back to me.

Then I got to the 2nd level, she grabbed the controller again, said "my turn" and died fast when those guys started shooting those blue laser things, said "fudge this game" and left. It was about time for me to go to sleep anyways.

Will beat it this week.

Are you guys recording the moment you beat it, or just posting here "I beat it" or what's the norm?

You can just say you beat it, take a pic, w/e really. It's on the honor system basically. Since I was playing on emu I just took a screenshot.

If you think it's not bad, my rebuttal would be you likely haven't played many shooters of that era. It's passable. It's like eating bad tasting food to survive.

Well I said it wasn't horrible, I only played the 1st level though too. To be honest I wasn't really that into shooters as a kid, I found them kind of boring and redundant, i like things with better gameplay or RPG type elements, so you are probably right about not playing a whole lot of shooters of the era too.

That said Arrow Flash was a solid choice for GOTM because it's so easy. I think that is part of why it's going to be one of the most cleared GOTM titles. In this vein, if we want another easy shooter at some point, I know quite a few. Otoh if we want to punish and test @DefaultGen we could vote for something like Rayxanber 2 or Kyuukyoku Tiger (both loops).

It's pretty okay. Super overpriced but slick.

I'm pissed, I hoped that Kevtris would do what he did with the Analogue NT and release other system cores for the FPGA so I could get my FPGA Genesis on but it looks like either he got smart or Analogue was like "Alright, fudgeo, you're screwing yourself out of potential market advancement down the line, get smart".

Those are the Contra guys. These are Ralf Jones and Clark Steel / Still.

One of the best shmups on the SNES imo. Yeah the US price in particular is super retardo but for free, it's no regrets at all playing it.

Being one of the best shooters on SNES is like being one of the best RPGs on N64.

Galactic Attack was like the perfect difficulty for me, although that means it's on the easy range of shooters. It's probably comparable to something like Ikaruga? I haven't played Ikaruga in a while but I remember liking it so much because the difficulty wasn't really in the gameplay but in chaining combos, despite the fact that it got a reputation for being this super hard game because it doesn't play itself.

We don't need more shooters because we're picking Policenauts though, remember?

Ikaruga has kind of a weird/bad rap among some shooter player circles. It's a good game, but kind of puzzly for a shooter which is I think part of it. It's definitely a good game.

Heh, I'll keep voting for Policenauts. We need someone to stuff the ballot.

Ending screenshot preferred. But you can just say you beat it and we will believe you. Not like there is any incentive in cheating.

Just post a pic of the credits or ending screen. Or you can stream it too. @sharif is probably our most consistent streamer. You can check out RTT members' channels by checking the Who's On list.

Hey I'm out sick from work so I'm going to stream some Arrow Flash.

https://www.twitch.tv/defaultgen

We've all talked a big game about how easy this is. Apparently Gypsy no-deathed it on his first attempt. So I'm going to 1cc it.

love to all my loyal fans. Thank you for telling me to turn the sound on after the stream.

@Lunar now I want both my TJ+E icon and Arrow Flash 1cc icon.

Oh yeah, @sharif Lords of Thunder is a totally beatable game. I beat the Sega CD version the first time I played it.

I had to move (twice) because I have the pea shooter. Since you can shoot the big "sun" bullets, it seems feasible that if you're powered up you may not have to move at all to beat him and his entire one phase.
