I've been thinking about grabbing one of these lately. Anyone have one that can say for sure if it comes in handy or do you barely use it and is it a waste of plastic. Thoughts about this would be appreciated.

I love mine. I use it more than my bank's debit card actually, since my bank account is connected to Paypal.
You get like 1% of what you spend back each month. Doesn't sound like much, but it's better than getting nothing at all from my bank card
Also, it's great if you have a lot of Paypal money in your account that you'd like to spend right away in a store or get money from ATM machine

I have one and rarely use it because I don't commonly keep funds in my PayPal account. If you regularly maintain a balance, its great, but it doesn't fund from your backup source if you make a purchase for more than the balance of your PayPal account. Ex: I tried to use $50 worth of PayPal funds off the PayPal debit card on a $100 item thinking it would pull from my checking account the rest of the funds (like a typical online PayPal-funded purchase would do), but it just declined.

For me, it's useless. The only real reason is to have immediate access to money in the PayPal account, but I'm never cutting it so close that PayPal is literally my only source of money.

I think there might be an ATM charge if you use it like that, but for buying stuff in stores I have never paid any fees (and actually have gotten money as I mentioned earlier)

Well then that settles it.

Unless someone comes along and disproves everything that you've just stated than I'm getting one.

Also, what masterqueef said is false. I've purchased a lot of items that have been over the funds I have in Paypal (most of the time I don't have any funds at all) and it just takes backup funds from your bank account

I've had one for years, it's great. I have my Paypal account linked to my checking account so I always use the PP card instead of the bank card because of the 1.5% cash back. Cash back is given as a lump sum at the end of the month; psychologically, I prefer it this way as it works out to a free dinner/movie/game/whatever. No fees save ATM fees which are charged by the ATM and not Paypal.

And yes, guncrazy is right in saying that masterchief is wrong: I usually have $0.00 in my PP account and it always deducts from my checking.

Maybe chief doesn't have his account linked to his checking. Odd that he's the only one that has had this problem, unless both accounts were empty.

Definitely worth it. As I recall it takes a few days to transfer to and from bank accounts, with the debit card it's instant withdrawals. But don't lose it, I lost two and after the second one they flat out refused to send another one then promptly closed my account for no reason several weeks later. I had over 3 bucks on there and now it's lost.

Damn, just logged into PayPal Debit Card and the page said "we noticed you didn't have a backup source for your PayPal debit card, would you like to add one"?

For once, I actually thank Guncrazy90 for the heads up, I will def be utilizing this thing a lot more now.

Think about websites that don't use paypal (amazon, for instance), you can spend your paypal by using the card just like a debit card. I like it for that reason. But I also like it for the reason others have stated too.

A couple people have said you get a certain percentage of what you spend back. How does funds come in, are they just added to your Paypal balance and you get an e-mail notification?

No cost. The benefits are that you no longer have a price cap for transactions and your account can now draw from a backup fund

I do this also -- and have for years with no problems. I've never gotten cash out at an ATM or anything though -- I just use it as a credit card when I want it to come out of my PayPal.

I also have PayPal Buyer's Credit linked as my backup funding source. So, if I charge beyond what I have as a balance, it just pulls it from Buyer's Credit and I pay it back later. * yes *

I like it. Theres no reason not to have one, really.

You can load money onto your account now with Greendot money packs also, using it like a pre-paid debit card if you like. Its better than Greendots actually pre-paid card, which I have also.

I was just getting ready to do this and I looked up the Card Agreement and it says #

PayPal Debit Card Fees.
ATM Withdrawal US $ 1.00 (Plus any amounts charged by the ATM owner.)
Signature Withdrawal $ 3.00 if a signature is required.
Non-US ATM Transaction (Using an ATM machine that is not in the US) 1% This fee will apply even if the transaction does not require a currency conversion.
Non-US Debit Card Usage (Making a purchase from a seller that is not in the US) 1% This fee will apply even if the transaction does not require a currency conversion.
Exchange Rate & Fee The currency exchange rate is determined by PayPal based on the current market price and includes a 2.5% Fee. This Fee only applies when PayPal performs the currency conversion.

If you use an ATM that is not a Maestro/Cirrus ATM, you may be charged a fee by the operator of the machine and/or by any network used.

It says there is a charge if you use the ATM and if you need a signature. Are you guys sure there's no fees or are you using the "student Card"?

I don't know when you would need to provide a signature for withdrawal, I would assume this only applies to people who are trying to get cash from their Paypal account maybe?

You can do that with any debit card, but most places only let you withdraw a certain amount. I found that Fry's Grocery has no limit if you click other amount.

I've had a Paypal card for a couple years now and there's several reasons I like it.

1. When you don't have money in your balance it will deny the charge, unlike some banks that will let you and charge you out the ass.

2. All the money it costs is $1 every time you use it at an ATM.

3. It's tons more convenient than waiting for a paypal bank transfer or echeck.

I've had it for a year or so. I have my funding for it set as Paypal Balance with backup funding set as Bank Account. I use it on a shopping trip the other week and instead of taking it from my paypal balance it decided to take everything from my bank account. Because of Paypals error I now have $300 in overdraft fees in my bank account and they're blaming me even though they said I do have my funding set up correctly.

They can't decline an EFT. My bank declines when I use my bank card but when it's a third party doing an EFT they reject it and still charge the overdraft fee. Which is crap because according to the banks website the overdraft fee is a bank "service" charge for them covering your charge. But my bank rejects it and sends it back to Paypal who then tries to take it out again and again and again.

I'm hoping this is about a specific bank, because I've been charged 5 overdraft fees in two weeks...worst part is I wasn't even overdrafted when they did.

Your bank may not charge overdraft fees when you attempt to use your debit card, which is how the regulations are written, but and Electronic Funds Transfer from a third party will. A failed EFT is the same as a bad check. You still get the $35 fee. The new laws that were wrote state that banks can no longer allow you to purposely overdraft your account by using your debit card. It has nothing to do with checks or EFT. Read the actual law before you spew crap.

Link so you can actually be informed

"With the new rules, consumers will be unable to withdraw money from ATMs if they have no funds and they haven't opted into the protection.

The rules don't cover overdraft protection for checks or recurring ATM payments, however"

Because you're spewing misinformation that could get someone else in trouble.

READ AGAIN

They only did away with overdrafts fees for your DEBIT CARD. Go ahead and write me a check for $10,000 and see if they don't add an overdraft charge to your account. Than use your Paypal Debit card with no money in your account and see if you incur an overdraft fee for a fail EFT. I guarantee you will. How do I know this? I bank with Wachovia...who is owned by WELLS FARGO.

 * yes * I do it all the time. You can change the amount PayPal will pull from your backup funding. (You can also use a CC as a back up funding source) The max is $500.00 a day I believe.

Yes, the cash back is adjustable -- and is currently at 1%.

I used to do their Money Markey thing too when the rate was at like 4.5%. Once it got down to like 0.5%, I pulled out of it -- since it could have easily gone negative and I would LOSE money just by having it sit in my balance. heh.
