So I was watching America's Funniest Videos with the kiddies last night, and I've always wondered: Why do the WORST videos ALWAYS win the $10,000 grand prize?? As soon as I see the video the first time, I immediate know it's the winner. And they are NEVER funny!!

If they worked it out as a Youtube Free Show with maybe ad placements the show probably could get a lot more reach.

Sometimes he even does "the Carlton" dance. Only half the people there even know what that is.

lol the Carlton dance will always be classic, but it got pretty annoying when a certain demographic finally discovered what that was in like 2012 or whenever he was on Dancing with the Stars. Hey, that dance has been FIRE since the 90s. Fudging hipsters.

I felt the same way when I saw it on Sunday.

I used to watch AF(H)V every week, but it lost its appeal after a few years. There were and are so many copycats, with each one trying to outdo the other in the presentation. In an hour long show, there was probably only about 10 minutes of video and the rest was filler.

The first criteria for winning the top prize on AFV is to have a child in the video.

I believe that often because there are three choices, the votes can be split fairly evenly between the two funniest videos and then the third video is the winner. For example: If 100 votes are cast, A can get 30, B can get 30, and C can get 40. C likely would not win against A or B individually, but wins because 2 of the 3 three choices are evenly matched.

You've hit on the reason I stopped watching the show years ago: the stupid videos always win. For a while, one of the top 3 videos was ALWAYS a kid pulling someone's pants down. Like Tony said, having a child is an express ticket to winning. For a while, pets also helped, but the kids eventually edged them out also.

Precocious children that say something profound or tongue in cheek likely win above all else.

Regardless of the humor in a video, AFV voters were incredibly sympathetic toward children. A high percentage of the kid videos that won were simply kids being kids. They sang off key, got the words to a song wrong, acted up during a play, made a move something that highlighted their poor coordiation, etc.

I often found myself asking the question, "why was this being recorded?" Particularly n the pre-digital days, one had to make a serious effort to get out the video camera to record something and there was no simply way to share it with family and friends. Did they really think they were going to watch their DIY project or tree removal in the future - or share it with family and friends?

My girls love watching AFV. I'd go so far as to say it's one of their favorite shows. In my opinion, they should just do away with the competition aspect. Then again, I guess it's been on the air since the early 90s. Perhaps it's a "if it's not broke, don't fix it" type of situation. I remember watching it with my parents when people had to submit videos on VHS.

The only host that I ever liked on there was Tom Bergeron. Everyone else always annoyed the piss out of me. When the show first came out, we used to mute the tv so we could watch it without having to listen to Bob Saget.

I think if you are successful in getting a video on the show, they give you a shiny new t-shirt.
