What does everyone think about Quentin Tarantino doing next Star Trek film?

I feels it have to be a joke

Its like having Woody Allen doing Star Wars or Spike Lee doing Harry Potter

I for one think it's great. Star Trek needs someone to give it a kick in the rear.

The movies have been generic action flicks and the show, while enjoyable for some, don't really capture the Star Trek nature that some fans were looking for, the adventure and exploration, it was again focused on the action action action.

Also IIRC it's just his idea/pitch, he's not directing it or anything.

Well it's hard to say then. All of his movies I know anything about that he directed, he also wrote. I just hate his style. Even if he didn't write the Star Trek script, I'm sure his overall direction would make it feel too much like his other films, which I have absolutely no interest in.

I'm interested in what Tarantino can do, was surprised, but I think the franchise could use a curveball at this time. Wasn't thrilled with ST Beyond. Will the writers go new story, or rework a tale from the ST mythology you think?

Rewatched The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The fellowship I can just watch as nauseam. I love it. Probably my favorite flick with the exception of Inception.

The last two are so boring. It took some willpower to sit through it all.

I'm sure he'll have a hand in the script. It was his story that he personally pitched to JJ Abrams that got the movie greenlit in the first place, so this will have Tarantino's fingerprints all over it.

Thankfully. Who knows? We might actually see something original from the Star Trek franchise which hasn't happened in years. The Abrams trilogy (I know he didn't direct Beyond) was decent but it was more-or-less just Star Wars in a Star Trek wrapper. First was good, Into Darkness tried a little too hard with the villain reveal, Beyond was passable. Discovery seems like more of the same when it comes to sci fi prequels. I bet Tarantino will bring it back to the dialogue-ridden roots of the older series but with his own frenetic action style. I'm really looking forward to it.

theJaw

Nah nothing wrong with them, they just didn't feel as Star Trek as the projects that came before it. They were the special effect sci fi adventure romps of the Star Trek universe. Which worked because those movies were outted as an alternate timeline existing with the original one. But Star Trek was always a bit more nuanced than straight up action flicks. Much more philosophical and talky, a lot less fist fighting on top of a speeding space train haha

Yeah, the eyes look horrible, everything else looks pretty good! The anime is a classic and has very good fight sequences. Could turn out cool, I agree. I doubt they fix her character model though, it kinda looks like theyve finished it.

I dig the eyes. Looks like they're purposely big to make her a little unsettling since she's not "completely human" or whatever.

Never saw the anime but that does look pretty neat. Robert Rodriguez is the man, after all.

Stiler

There's no reason to make her CGI while everyone else is real. It's easy to notice she's cgi compared to everyone else and it is just going to make the movie age horribly 10-20 years down the road. It's literally CGI for the sake of being CGI, nothing they couldn't have done using a real person.

In the comics it's not her eyes that make her look "different" it's her body and obvious machine look to certain parts of her. Other character have anime eyes just like she does.

They should have either went FULL cgi for the whole movie or used the real actresses face instead, like they did with Ghost in the Shell and Scarlet.

They can still give her "big eyes" while still using a real persons face, it's not a hard effect to do and has been done in things before. Anyone remember that creepy as hell playstation commercial from the 90's?

Pretty sure that is a real actess with CGI'd eyes/features. They may have animated her entire likeness - but they cast an actress for the role...

image

In the anime, everyone had anime eyes... because it was an anime. In real life, eyes don't look like that. So giving her big eyes will make her look more unnatural - which only aids to the nature of her character as far as I can tell. Now along with her weird limbs, she's even more innately different.

I know zero about the comic, but I can tell from some google images of it that the eyes are only big because it was manga/anime. There's no good reason why they made her look that way in this movie. It looks terrible, unnerving and distracting from what otherwise looks to be an excellent movie. They should have just made it the fudging actress unaltered.

Meh, I don't see the hub bub. Comes off as needless complaints just because it's another strange choice for an anime adaptation. Maybe her eyes only look like that because it was a manga/anime - but the trailer itself alludes to how she isn't completely human and how she innately, as a character trait, comes off unnerving to those around her. The eyes only add to that. No big deal.

Yah no, they just had giant chain whips flying out of their arms and mechanical body parts all over the place. But let's choose to get miffed about the eyes because THOSE are the most outlandish things in this trailer.... yes

I wonder if that's something that could be explained in movie? I mean since she's the main character? I'd say that's pretty likely. I just don't think the eyes are nearly that bad and the complaints, to me, just come off as more anti-anime adaptation geek outrage. "Well I'm going to ignore that the movie seems to clearly establish a world where weird looking androids exist - but I'm going to crap on the easiest target from the minute long trailer because I'm on the internet!!" Just doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I'm going to see this in theaters just to spite these complaints and even hope the eyes are BIGGER theatrically. Ha!

Now if they Asian'd up her eyes like Cloud Atlas just to draw attention to it being an anime, that'd be crapty.

Well, considering most humans tend to focus on the face and especially the eyes when looking at other living beings, yeah it's a bit distracting to have them look bizarre. It's like superman's lip in Justice League.
theJaw
GameTZ Subscriber Triple Gold Good Trader Secret Santa
* 9-Dec(#38)
I mean, Superman is supposed to have an innately human-looking face and it looks like they stretched out his upper lip. An android, who is having her first live action adaptation with this movie, doesn't necessarily have to. It'd be possible to build great big robot eyes. Obviously if she were a human character and they stylized her like that, I'd get the complaining. I understand the uncanny valley situation here, but again, I feel like that off putting vibe was an intentional effect. As it stands, to me personally, the eye thing just comes off as an overreaction. Just my opinion, I accept you have yours. Don't see the movie in that case homeboy.

If they really don't explain it being for any plausible reason, I'll be right there on the "fudge those eyes" bandwagon. I just don't find it as distracting I suppose, I think it makes the character unique looking.

Going to try something here. I imagine lots of folks in this thread who actively watch movies have seen a bunch of Christmas movies. I'm going to throw out Christmas movie titles and give my number rating, but if you've seen any, do the same haha. I'm interested how some of these are regarded here on the TZ.

These are all on my Christmas Movie Scale. I give Jingle All the Way a 7/10 here - it is not a 7/10 movie. The Christmas blinders help everything.

Elf - 10/10 (One of the most perfect Christmas movies)

Jingle All the Way - 7/10

Miracle on 34th Street (90s) - 6.5/10

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas - 7/10

A Charlie Brown Christmas - 10/10

The Nightmare Before Christmas - 8/10

A Christmas Story - 8/10

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) - 6.5/10

The Santa Clause - 6.5/10

The Polar Express - 7.5/10

Is it considered hipster to be a Del Toro fan? haha, I just think he makes great movies. Admittedly Pacific Rim gave me a migraine so I had to opt out and haven't revisited it yet, but I dig just about anything he's involved with. I'll always appreciate him for bringing one of my favorite superheroes not only to the big screen, but to my general attention in the first place, with his Hellboy movies. And Pan's Labyrinth is one of my absolute favorites and may very well be my favorite foreign language movie. That movie is just such a trip.

I know they used a real actress, my point is that they should have had her actually play the role and not went with a CGI face instead.

Take a look at Alicia Vikander in Ex-Machina or ScarJo in Ghost in the Shell, both movies made them obvious androids but still had real actors for the faces.

The problem with having her face be CGI is that it looks out of place, especially up-close when you easily know its cgi. This has nothing to do about making her an "android" or not, in real life an android isn't going to look like "cgi" because they are a physical thing. So having her face be CGI and saying it's because she's an android and it's meant to make her look more un-natural doesn't really make sense in that context.

In the comics she has obvious metal parts on her body and even her face, why not use this? It wouldn't be an eyesore and would make her look more in line with all the other characters and androids.

Are you talking about the new one or the one from the 90's? (Starring Charlie Sheen).

Both were great sci fi movies. The newer Arrival was a good slow burn movie and that soundtrack was great.

I am so mad at you.

@Stiler thanks for actually clearing some things from the comic up - knowing there were less divisive routes that could have been taken based off the source material makes the outrage a little more clear to me.

But it really boils down to how distracted you are by the CGI. I don't think it looks all that bad - the eyes are the only things that look super out of place. The rest of her face just looks shiny - like metal. Like an android. It personally doesn't bother me as bad, so I should be fine.

But I was joking when I said I'd see it in the theater, I'm not overly interested in the first place haha

That's real badass though. Glad to see you liked it. So that's a 9.5 for Last Jedi, what did you give Force Awakens for comparison?

That makes me really happy that ENIX has seen it and likes it that much. I've been pretty afraid of being pretty disappointed. So, now I'm excited again. smile yes

Since he liked it, it makes me concerned it'll be worse than Episode 1-3.

Pretty sure I gave it a 9/10 and said it rivaled RotJ in terms of goodness. After seeing it a few more times, I step that back a bit and say it's just below RotJ but still a 9/10 for me. I'm reluctant to give TLJ a 10/10 because I like to watch "wow" movies twice before making a final judgment like that but it's up there. Guess it all depends on if you're a prequel apologist or not. Even with fanedits, I found the prequels a little better than tolerable at best, theatricals were ass. I realize some people thought TFA and Rogue One were nostalgic crap and love the prequels, and some people think the prequels were good and the OT was meh. Where I'm coming from is OT is god, newest 3 (includes R1) so far have been solid gold, and prequels maybe take bronze if you get the right fanedit.

And with reviews coming out I log out of Facebook.... Two years ago some random comments on an NFL Page ruined stuff from The Force Awakens.

And so far I haven't seen one trailer for The Last Jedi.

So will prequel apologists like or dislike this one? I heard that Rian Johnson alludes to the prequels a bit more in this one than TFA did.

Well, I imagine since you enjoy it, prequel apologists will likely be less-likely to enjoy it?

I don't hope anyone dislikes their time watching the movie but I am not a fan of the prequels, as most know. Like you, I can tolerate them. I do enjoy them when I watch the "Fall of the Jedi
" series by fan editor Q2 though, but we've talked about that. As far as theatricals go, I'm not big into the prequels at all.

I won't comment on any film details. Prefer to keep it fresh for others. I'm just giving an idea of where I come from. If you liked Rogue One or TFA or the OT you should be good here, no doubt. I honestly can't gauge what kind of human would like the prequels over the OT or the new ones so I can't really comment on if a prequel lover/apologist would love this or anything to be honest. winking raspberry

@ENIX, I do have one question about the movie, and it shouldn't be spoilery.

How much screentime do those annoying looking penguin things called Porgs get? Because they've been pushing toys for those like crazy.

I dug it a lot when I first saw it but upon re-watches, it doesn't hold up quiiite as well as first watch. I still enjoy it, and it's the best prequel of them all easily, but I think every main saga movie beats it out.

Still was a fine movie, competently made and fun to get into the SW universe away from the primary story for a bit.

I won't address screen time, but I will say that I wouldn't worry about the porgs. They're not this trilogy's ewoks or jarjar if thats what you're worried about.

Yeah, I was concerned about that. I don't mind cutesy mascot things but the way they're pushing them in toys worried me. Thanks. yes

Well, Star Wars has always been about marketing and pushing collectibles and crap. I mean, what other movie has figures for fudging characters just standing in the background?

image

When it comes to Star Wars, I think it's less about how cutesy something looks and more about how well it fits into the scheme of things, and how much it interferes (or not) with the rest of the film around it...and in all honesty, after not seeing RotJ for a while and remembering Ewoks being annoying and stupid, turns out they're not even that. And the flip side of that, as badass as Acklay was, it wasn't enough to make Episode 2 better even if there was more of it.

That's what I thought about Baby Groot. There were parts that I felt he was just scripted to be merchandise.

Another possibility is that they are going to really hammer people over the head with the "I'm just an android ... longing to be a person"-type storyline; her constant longing to be a real person and loved (you see a brief glimpse of that when she says something to the normal dude about not being real (or something).

Having these giant, expressive, doe-eyes will really help accentuate that longing.

Perhaps it's being done simply to manipulate the audience. Because people can't relate to a robot. Her eyes will help bridge that connection with the viewer.

Punisher is so far my favorite of the Netflix Marvel shows. I lost interest in all the other ones as they started going down hill fast.
