Video people: I'm dumb when it comes to cables. Is this a DVI to VGA cable?

And if it is, can anyone show me where I might be able to get this in a length of like 50 feet?

I need a really long cable to hook my laptop up to a digital projector that I want to mount to a ceiling.

Thanks for the help!

Yup, VGA to DVI

Just buy an adapter for one of the ends.

Also, just to make sure before you buy... Does your laptop ONLY have a VGA out? A lot of newer ones have a digital output (usually HDMI or DisplayPort or something).

If your laptop has a digital output too, you'd generally be better off to use that instead of the VGA. yes

No, this is a really old 12" powerbook. I've been using the above cable since I got the projector, but I want to mount the projector to my ceiling, run the cable across the ceiling and down the wall to where I can plug in the laptop. Both are really old and this is the only input (well, I'm using an adapter on the mac end) they have.

What sort of adapter are you using at the Powerbook side to convert to VGA?

Is this a PowerBook G4?

It's a Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter going from my G4 powerbook 12" into the cable, and then that cable plugs into the projector (the projector ONLY has the DVI input).

Do they make like a 50 foot version of the cable I posted the image to?

Can I get this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&lo...

and this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&lo...

and be okay?

Yes, those would likely work.

However, what I would do would be to stay digital for the better connection. So, instead of doing Mini-DVI to VGA first, why not just get a 50ft DVI cable and a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter?

What you are trying to do does this:

Digital (from laptop) -> Analog (using Mini-DVI to VGA adapter) -> (cable run with analog signal) -> Digital (using VGA to DVI adapter) -> Digital (Projector)

That's kinda worse case. (It could be not quite as bad if it is actually doing just Digital to Analog once and then staying that way through the DVI since DVI supports both.)

But if you just get a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter and then a 50-ft DVI cable, you'll be doing this:

Digital (from laptop) -> still Digital (using Mini-DVI to DVI adapter) -> (cable run - still digital) -> Digital (Projector)

Stays digital for the full path.

Also, doing a quick search online, it looks like the G4 came with a Mini-DV to DVI adapter (just like it comes with the VGA adapter). So, maybe you even already have one lying around somewhere?

I bought the laptop used long long ago so it didn't come with any adapters.

It isn't important for me to get optimal out of this rig - I usually use it just to show keynote during my workshops, and I want this long cable because I'm going to be photographing a band and want to project an image on them and the backdrop.

I went with the ones I linked though Amazon, but if you wouldn't mind linking me to what you recommend, if this layout doesn't work come Wednesday, I can return and try your option.

You should be good then. yes

If you want to look into it later, let me know. I'd have to do a little research to double-check the PowerBook G4's Mini-DV output. It must have analog since you're doing VGA, but a quick search showed digital-only DVI (DVI-D) adapters instead of DVI-I. So, I'll look into it more if you decide you want to go that route. But, for what you're doing, you should be good with VGA. yes

Okay @John I need your input again.

The picture I'm attaching to this shows the adapter that just arrived on top, and the existing dongle that I'm using currently pictured below. It isn't the same size. What is the original version called, if what I ordered (DVI-I 24+5 Male to VGA HD15 Female Adapter) isn't the right piece?

So the bottom is a DVI 30+5 pin? And what I ordered above was a 25+5 pin?

Do they make a DVI 30+5 pin to VGA female adapter? Can anyone link me to one?

Oh crap! What the fudge??

I am sorry. I overlooked that in the first photo. I assumed it was DVI, but it isn't. It's actually called an M1-DA (EVC) connector. I've never actually seen one used in real life. (Pretty much just an InFocus projector thing from what I'm finding online.)

It looks almost like a DVI connector except with 2 extra rows of pins. It's a different beast though. Again, sorry for not noticing this earlier.

EDIT: See next post.

All that being said, I think that this adapter would work to use instead of the VGA to DVI.

Perfect! I actually just ordered that.

Thank you!

Ha ha, so now I have the projector mounted up to the ceiling and I just discovered it's a model that doesn't flip the image upside down! Ha ha ha ha!

Still okay, as I'm mainly doing this to shoot an image over a band in the studio, so I think it'll be okay.

Just ... funny.

Just have them play upside down, problem solved.

Hahahah.

I can just flip the file upside down.

Not a problem, really.
