So since in the next few years, (maybe less) Sony and Microsoft will most likely be releasing their next gen consoles. So the question has popped into my head: Will our accounts be able to be carried over to these next - gen consoles? Or will we have to start over with our trophies and achievements?

I am sure this has been discussed many times before, but now with these console's release date's getting closer, I figured I'd bring it up again.

Discuss.

I have no idea but i'm going to say it most likely will carry over, if you look at Playstation or Xbox currently, your user name you use for everything, you sign onto their online sites with you PSN username or Xbox Live username. SO I would be very shocked if your username didn't carry over.

As for trophies and achievements, I don't have the slightest guess.

I personally couldn't care less if the achievements/trophies carried over, but I'm sure there's a lot of people on this site alone that would be furious

I figured that they would most likely bring the PSN ID over since they did that for the vita, but I am not sure about trophies. I just got my PS3 about a month ago and have thought about going trophy hunting, but I don't want to earn a bunch of platinum's this year and see them go to waste if they aren't brought over to the PS4...

See my issue?

My best guess is that they will since they won't want to piss off achievement completionists.

Right, but I am confused about what they will do about the trophies. Will they develop a whole new kind of system for them, and leave the PS3 ones in the dust?

I think my main dilemma is the fact that if I were start trophy hunting now, and the PS4 comes out at the end of this year, what would that net me if they did something with the PS3 trophies? Better question is, when is the PS4 coming out? I am beginning to think that we will see more of a Holiday 2014 release instead of a Holiday 2013 because they just pushed the release date of the GTA V all the way back to mid - September. (Potentially infringing on the PS4 release)

I hope they don't bring them over. I'd love watching the achievement/trophy whores cry. * evil smile *

Personally I would not care either way. I really liked the idea of trophies when they first came out, and the games did offer good trophies for a while. Then the whole system became diluted with people only playing easy games to get trophies. Some games I do not even think you need to finish them to get the trophies. Its really cool to see somebody with 10,000 trophies but then you look at their list and its filled with all the hannah montana and barbie games you can buy. There is no balance to the system, you do not get rewarded for getting platinum on a game like wipeout, and you do not get less rewarded for getting a platinum in hannah montana.

So would I. Achievements/Trophies are useless.

They will absolutely carry over on both consoles. The trophies/achievements are tied to your psn/xbl accounts not the consoles. So as long as they continue to use the current online infrastructure(I dont see why they wouldnt) then they will remain. Not only that but believe it or not the achievement systems provide a lot of incentive for replaying titles and in turn potentially give consumers a reason to hold on to games a little longer than then normally would have.

From Playstation and Microsoft's stand point they have nothing to gain from ditching trophies/achievements, imo.

I'm sure Gamerscore will carry over. What concerns me is wether or not DLC content like Arcade games will carry over. I can understand if the Retail Disc based games wont be compatible, but all that DLC content... it will be a big mistake if they don't allow people to carry that over. It will be really annoying for those like me who have over 200 XBLA/Indy games and the only way I can play them is to keep my 360 plugged in. That in itself might not be so bad if it's not a space issue. But what happens if my 360 gets fudgeed up in a few years when they no longer "fix" or support 360's. When I can't just go to a store and buy a new 360? What then? This is why I think it's really important for them to let us carry over our Digital Content. Let us re-download it onto the new console. If not.. it's going to really suck ass.... (The point of it. Not the console.)

Maybe to you. Lots of people like them for various reasons. I personally like having a "card" where it shows all the games I played and how I did in them. I like being able to see how my friends played a game. If they went through normally or "whore" through it getting every achievement for it. It's neat to see how people play games. It's like a little way we can see something developers have been able to track (online) with how people play games. It also offers a sort of "gaming history" on someone's gamertag. Showing you all the games they played and what games/genres they might like. I think it's a neat feature. It's not all about points and having as many "achievements" you can have you know. There are many reasons and uses for the system.

I'm majorly lacking in my video game trophy knowledge. What do they "net" you now?

Achievements/Trophies are for replay value, as least that is what I think of them.

Not sure about trophies in PSN but don't you get some sort of points back when purchasing something if you're an Xbox Live Rewards member and have reached certain gamerscore thresholds? Granted the %'s are really really low but it's at least something.

I do like to complete games (including achievements/trophies) but I personally don't mind either way if they come back or not next gen or even if they switch to something different (basically starting over). I'm more concerned about being able to carry over the arcade games to the new system.
