I'm new to the current gen consoles, so I'll speak only about GB/TB from my most recent experience. I just got a Xbox One S 500GB console, because the $250 bundle included a few games, a movie and an extra controller.
I downloaded the Halo games, and a few of the Xbox 360 games onto my new console. Now that most of the games are downloaded, I already used up 65% of the hdd. Brand new out of the box, I only had approximately 375-385GB out of the 500 for my own use. So the storage actually goes VERY fast on these things. Had I known this previously, I'd have spent the extra money on a 1TB. But then again, I'm easily inconvenienced, so I don't want to be annoyed with erasing and downloading things back and forth, I'd rather have everything at my disposal when I want it.
So if you don't plan on using it for games very much, 500GB might be okay. But I didn't download very many games, and I'm left with just over 100GB left, and I barely set up the console today.
