What are your thoughts on the semi-high end laptop market today? is it worth having a touch tablet/laptop now that the speeds have been updated, response rates have improved drastically?

I've been debating on the Surface Pro and MBP (MacBook Pro w/ or w/o touch bar) for a while... however, while they are great pieces of machinery, they are always being upgraded every 6 months or so (some sooner).

What do you all think about buying a new laptop (especially now for MBP since a refresh is due by Feb/March)? I'm pretty sure I made this post not too long ago (and still haven't purchased one... lol)

Also, I was considering opening up a Best Buy Card to make my purchase, anyone opposed or think this is a good idea? any other websites that may have better deals when making a large purchase? Thanks in advance #dragonlordfrodo

8th generation Intel stuff just came out, which is MASSIVE. It's the first time U-series CPUs have been quad-core. I'd hold off another month or so to make sure whatever you want has an 8th-gen processor.

I own a 2016 Macbook Pro 13" (the one without the touch bar) and adore the living hell out of it, but it depends on what you plan to do with your laptop.

If you're looking to do a little light gaming, get something with an 8th-gen CPU and an NVIDIA MX150 (it'll be a month or two before those are prevalent combinations, but they've been announced).

I plan on getting steam eventually, do some light gaming... but I need my PC to have HDMI / SD Card slots... the 8th gen CPU / Vid card would be super helpful. I was going to get the 2017 MBP 13'' w/ the tb, but I'm not sure I really need it.

Any laptop recommendations with that CPU/GPU combo?

Not sure, regarding the MX150 + 8th gen right now. It's brand new (ie. the processors were announced this week), so it might be a good idea to wait a couple weeks.

Touch bar has no real benefit honestly. The processor is roughly the same in the non-touch bar, but the battery life in the non-TB is better (bigger battery + less power draw). They increased the TDP in the low-end model, so the boost clocks can be held for longer.

Interesting, I'll prob give it until october / early Nov and see what comes of some of these computers... I wouldn't mind the compatibility / ease of use of a tablet w/ removeable keyboard. Coffee Lake is one of the newer processors right? I havent been keeping up much lately

8th gen is super ambiguous. It sounds to me like it's Kaby Lake+ (so generation 7.5 if you will). Coffee Lake is yet to come.

i5-8520U benchmarks are looking good. Quad i5s in ultraportables make eGPUs even more tempting.

I have the high end gen 1 surface book and have been quite happy with it minus display issues due to the high dpi. Can be partially resolved, just annoying. It's all for work and runs decent sql workloads and plays Diablo and overwatch good enough.

There are a lot of high end lappies coming this fall. You might want to check out the ones with 4k display resolution. ^^

Definitely the i5 is on my mind, is it required still to have 4-6 GB of ram these days? I know it helps, but is it necessary (gaming)

I wouldn't be caught dead with a laptop that had less than 8GB RAM. If you're springing for an i5, 8GB will pretty much be standard.

Also 4k on a laptop is dumb. It murders battery life.

Eh, I'd say 95%+ of general consumers don't need 8gb.

While I don't necessarily disagree, the issue is that pretty much every thin & light laptop has soldered RAM now. What you get when you buy it is what you're stuck with. So if you keep the laptop for a couple years, that might change a bit.

Personally I like Apple and Lenovo. Skinny units with long battery life. I'm not gaming though, except classic emulation on Mac via openemu. I'm actually working on setting up a MacMini as a openemu system for a tv.

Ramwise I always make 8GB minimum. When it comes to Macs it's 16gb. Macs aren't ram hogs but extra ram is almost as big of a boost as CPU. PCs are different as in there's a discrete difference between CPU and ram upgrades.

I'm planning on replacing my current iMac with a 27" iMac this holiday so I can get user replaceable ram again and install more then 16gb.

Check out apple store online refurbished. They're decent since systems technically pass thru quality control twice. Same warranty as new. Packaged like new. You could probably find a 2017 MacBook for $300 off retail.
