Summary

Too much of a good thing isn't always a good thing.

Description

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey consists of three different but connected stories. It begins with prehistoric man and ends in 2001 with the space odyssey. These stories revolve around mysterious monoliths found on both earth and the moon that point towards Jupiter.

A movie that contains so little dialogue, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, depends on other various theatrical effects to tell their story. This movie uses both an emotionally stirring score and outstanding visuals to tell the story. This movie has one of the best scores I have ever heard, and it never falters. Whenever the music begins to play, the viewer knows exactly what they are expected to feel. Exciting visuals open the movie, with everything from the landscapes on the Earth, the moon and Jupiter to the vastness of space and the elaborate space stations looking outstanding. When the movie ends, leaves the viewer wondering what exactly was it that they just saw.

However, as with all things there are cons. The problem with this movie is that there is too much of a good thing. Although the score and the visuals are outstanding, they tend to become repetitive at different points in the movie. An example of this would be during a scene where you are watching a circular space station rotating in the vastness of space while listening to classical music for about 15 minutes. This caused me to fall asleep twice while watching the movie. When the movie is good, the movie is good; but as I said, it tends to get old quick.

As repetitive as this movie tends to become, I believe that everyone should watch it at least once. Even if you do not like the movie in the end, you will never forget the score or the visuals.
