Summary

The first 3D entry of the Metroid series and possibly the greatest first-person shooter ever.

Description

After being announced by Nintendo that Metroid Prime was going to be in the First-Person Adventure format, opposed to the traditional Side Scrolling, many people were skepticle. Upon release, those fears turned into anticipation as the famous bounty hunter's first quest in almost eight years was about to unfold. Now, Samus Aran must traverse the mysterious planet Tallon IV in an attempt to end the deadly experiments of the Space Pirates and finally take vengeance on them for what they'd done to her in the past.

Story: The Space Pirates are interstellar nomads highly advance in weaponry and space travel. As they learned the weaponry potential of the Metroid creatures, they built massive research labs on planet Zebes to study them. Orphaned by these terrifying pirates, Samus Aran was taken in by the bird-like race, the Chozo, and donned a power suit which she used to raid planet Zebes and destroy everything she saw. After her valiant effort, the Space Pirates immediately started rebuilding and resuscitating the highly advanced life forms Mother Brain, Ridley and Kraid while other Pirates searched for other planets with vast energy resources. It didn't take long before they discovered Tallon IV, unaware that Samus had tracked their location to the planet's low orbit. As they continued their unholy experiments, Samus sped toward Tallon IV, preparing to wipe them out once and for all...

Sound: Although no dialogue is spoken in the game, the effects and music immerse you in the game world. With some classic Metroid tunes mixed with brand new ones, Metroid Prime does not disappoint in this regard. The sound effects are very impressive, with the sound of your missles exploding, the terrifying howls of the monstrous foes, and even the bloodcurdling scream of Samus as she dies all being very life-like. The sound effects and the musical score definitely have something to do with this game being so damn good.

Gameplay: Though I've only played a handful of current gen FPS's, Metroid Prime has to have the most awkward feel to it than any other shooters. In most other FPS's, the design team harnessed the use of the second analog stick to perfection, while only one of the sticks is used in Prime. However, I can see why they did what they did. Because of all of the abilities you must obtain, and the lack of enough buttons, the C Stick cannot be simply for control, for it must be used for necessary ability configurations.

Analong Stick= Move Samus forward/ turn character
Directional Buttons= Switch visors
C Stick= Switch weapons
A Button= Shoot (hold A to charge shot)
B Button= Jump
Y Button= Shoot Missle (while in charge shot mode, fires Super Missles)
X Button= Morph Ball
Z Button= Open map
L Button= Scan/Strafe/Lock on
R Button= Manual Aim

As you can see, every button is used in the game, therefore leaving nothing for the "traditional feel" configuration of other First-Person Shooters.

Graphics: Simply put, the visuals in this game are remarkable! Anyone who's ever thought Nintendo games must have the look for only little kids, you'd be dead wrong. Everything from the ground itself, to the enemy models are some of the best graphics I've ever seen in any FPS, no, in gaming! The graphics are easily one of the most impressive things about Metroid Prime. Zoomers, Metroids, Ridley (the kick-ass dragon), and dozens of other memorable enemies, bigger and badder than ever before, are all trying to bar Samus' quest to destroy the malicious Space Pirates and bring peace back to the galaxy.

Near perfection in almost every field, Metroid Prime is definitely worth the $6.00 - $7.00 you'd pay at Gamestop for a used copy. If you own a Gamecube, turn off your computer and go buy this game. You will not be sorry. I promise you that.
