Summary

Jak & Daxter return to the action with a new world, new abilities, and a darker tone. Think you're ready?

Description

From the multi-award winning creators of Crash Bandicoot came Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, a game that surprised millions with it's crisp visuals, slick controls, and surprising difficulty. Now, with a deeper storyline and a darker mood, Jak & Daxter return to the action with guns blazing in the sequel to one of Naught Dog's greatest successes. Here comes Jak II.

Story "At the end of their last adventure, Jak & Daxter saved the world from the clutches of the evil Gol and Maia. Discovering the large and mysterious Precursor Rift Gate at the Dark Eco Silo where the epic battle took place, Jak, Daxter, Samos the Sage, and his daughter Keira have been busy reassembling the Gate at Samos' Hut in Sandover Village. Their actions unknowingly set off a chain of events that will shape their destinies. The Rift Gate opened, catapulting the group into the gritty, dangerous metropolis known as Haven City. Separated from one another, Jak is thrown into prison and forced to endure two torturous years of Dark Eco experiments at the hand of Baron Praxis, the ruler of Haven City. Meanwhile, Daxter has spent the last two years trying to free Jak from the bowels of the Baron's prison fortress. When he finally finds Jak, Daxter discovers that his friend has been changed forever. Upon their escape, the two become embroiled in a quest for revenge against the Baron, to find a way to get back home, and ultimately, fulfill the prophecy that will reveal the true heir to the throne of Haven City. A new chapter begins..."

Gameplay Just like the original game, Jak II has a fun and responsive control scheme. In fact, this game is a lot like a kid-friendly Grand Theft Auto title. It has all the elements of the GTA series. Huge, open world, the ability to commandeer civilian vehicles (or car'Jak'ing as I like to call it). Even the Krimzon Guards (the Baron's army) act as the police of Haven City. And to add to the GTA like experience, to progress, Jak & Daxter must do a slew of odd-jobs for the people of the city. Missions come in all different sorts and difficulties. Some challenges have shooting down prison transports and taking the captives to a remote safehouse all when the "police" are chasing, shooting, and ramming you with their gun bikes, while another has you escorting a dynamite team through the sewers while defending them from wave after wave of monsters. Jak II has very easy to learn controls and even a surprising amount of variety of moves to pull off without the complication of some other games.

Graphics To put it as simply as I can, this game has about the graphics you'd expect from an almost 4 year old PS2 title. Given the cartoonish style of the series, Jak II's graphics actually aren't too bad. Some of these images I've posted really don't do this title justice, so don't think these are all the game has to offer graphics wise.

Sound Back, and annoying as ever, Daxter, and the rest of the cast do a excellent job in the voice-over department and, this time around, Jak is no longer the mute he was in the original game. Music wise, don't expect this title to have the tracks you'll be humming later. While the music wasn't bad, I still didn't think it was nearly as good as the soundtrack in the Ratchet & Clank games.

With unbridled freedom, dozens of different missions to accomplish, and a new arsenal of weapons and gadgets (the jet board and mech suit), you'll have a blast shooting up the streets of Haven City. Even though this particular title doesn't have extremely high replay value, don't let it discourage you from picking up this great game ($20.00 new isn't to bad).

Travel to a future alive with drama, conflict and surprises. Friendship. Betrayal. Love. Revenge. Think you're ready?! Think again. You WILL finally know Jak!
