Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PlayStation)

Summary

A strange RPG set in a modern day high school setting with loads of charm. A side story to the Shin Megami Tensai series.

Description

Where to begin? This game picks up where the original left off. You still use the tarot card system. Make friends with monsters instead of fighting them, and they give you tarot cards, which will help you build up your characters in the velvet room.

You choose personae (or they choose you) to take on demons that are taking over the world! You are Maya, a journalist who is trying to solve the Joker murders. You get help from your best friend, a police officer, a computer hacker/lawyer, and a mysterious young boy.

The game has good replay value, too. At one point you pick an NPC. If you spread a rumor that he is male, then you get a male NPC. If you spread a rumor that she is female, then you get an additional female NPC. Speaking of rumors, if you spread a rumor through a detective agency, they become real..

The monsters in Persona are something you would find in astrology, but the makers added their own flavor. If you played the Shin Megami Tensai games or Revelations: Persona, this will all be very familiar.

The music is nothing epic, but it is solid mood music.

This is an RPG that will actually make you think. Anyone can relate to the game, because the main characters are all high school students, and we were all in high school once.

You may have trouble tracking down a copy of this game, and you certainly aren't getting mine. Find one on eBay for $25-$30, and you won't be sorry.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • A very involving game, a thinking man's RPG
  • Some of the better voice acting you will find in a USA game
  • "Different" and "refreshing"
  • a complex monster system, where you make friends with the monsters
  • Maintains a pathos quality, yet optimistic
  • Set in modern day instead of medival times
  • Tough subquests

Cons

  • The card system can be frustrating for some folks
  • Too many people have never heard of this game
  • Some of the Japanese "humor" is lost on an American audience
